It would behoove one, as a Catholic, to take time to

read and reflect upon the section of the Catholic Cate-

chism that addresses “Authorities in Civil Society” (2234

– 2257). Interestingly the Catechism divides the discus-

sion of the 10 Commandments under the categories of

Jesus: love of God and love of neighbor. Such a divi-

sion follows the biblical understanding of justice which

is about living in right relationship.

Critical to the Church fulfilling her mission to the

world is the role laypersons are called to play in the

public forum The Bishops of Vatican II in the Decree

on the Apostolate of Lay People (Apostolicam Actuosi-

tatem) state: “The characteristic of the lay state being a

life led in the midst of the world and of secular affairs,

laypersons are called by God to make their apostolate a

leaven in the world” (#2).

Unfortunately, for various reasons this understanding

of the mission of the laity to the world has been diluted

and muddied. For decades the point of Catholic edu-

cation from the local parish school through university

was to prepare men and women to go into the world

and to be a “leaven in the world” for justice. Catholic

colleges and universities required students to study

both theology and philosophy. Over the past 35 years

little by little such requirements were dropped.

Back in the 1930’s and 40’s not only Catholic students

but even longshoremen would gather to discuss Rerum

Novarum and other social encyclicals of the Church.

Dorothy Day and her Catholic Worker movement were

in their heyday. The movie “On the Water Front” was

inspired by the work of a Jesuit priest with longshore-

men. Catholic lay men and women played important

roles in the labor movement, as well as other areas of

social reform.

A quick glance at the issues of our times impacting the

sanctity of human life and the family, questions of war

and other forms of violence, poverty, etc. call for moral

and ethical solutions that serve the common good.

Such issues also place a moral demand upon Catholics

to witness to gospel values in the marketplace that af-

firm the dignity of all human beings.

In his pastoral, On the Coming of the New Millennium,

Pope John Paul II laments the fact that all too many

Catholics do not know or appreciate the social teaching

of the Church. The sad consequence is that many

Catholics take an indifferent attitude toward politics.

As the Pope knew all too well from personal experience

– the loss of many Jewish childhood friends in the con-

centration camps - many suffer when Christians and

Catholics do not speak up.

Es de nuestra incumbencia como Católicos, dedicar

tiempo para leer y reflexionar sobre la sección de

Catecismo Católico que trata sobre las “Autoridades en

la Sociedad Civil (2234 – 2257). Es interesante como el

Catecismo divide la discusión de los 10 Mandamientos

bajo las categorías de Jesus: amor de Dios y Amor por

el prójimo. Dicha división sigue el entendimiento

bíblico de la justicia, que es vivir en correcta relación .

Para que la Iglesia cumpla con esa misión en el mundo,

es crítica la participación de personas laicas en el fórum

público. Los Obispos del Vaticano II, en el Grado de

Apostolado de la Gente Láica (Apostolicam Actusitatem)

declaran: “Pero siendo propio del estado de los laicos el

vivir en medio del mundo y de los negocios temporales,

ellos son llamados por Dios para que, fervientes en el

espíritu cristiano, ejerzan su apostolado en el mundo a

manera de fermento” (#2)

Desafortunadamente, por varias razones, este

entendimiento de la misión de los laicos para el mundo

ha sido diluido y enlodado. Por décadas, la meta de la

educación Católica de la escuela parroquial local hasta

la universidad ha sido preparar a hombres y mujeres

para entrar en el mundo y ser una “levadura para el

mismo” y por la justicia. Los colegios y universidades

Católicos exigían que los alumnos estudiaran tanto

teología como filosofía. Durante los pasados 35 años,

poco a poco esos requisitos han ido perdiendo

importancia.

Durante los años 1930 y 1940, no solo estudiantes

Católicos, sino incluso personas comunes y corrientes se

reunían para discutir el Rerum Novarum y otras

encíclicas de la Iglesia. Dorothy Day y su movimiento

denominado Trabajador Católico, era famoso en su

época. La película “En el Puerto” fue inspirada por el

trabajo de un sacerdote Jesuita con los trabajadores de

las plataformas en medio del océano. Los hombres y

mujeres Católicos laicos han jugado un papel muy

importante en la labor del movimiento, igual que otras

áreas de la reforma social.

Un vistazo rápido a los asuntos de nuestros tiempos que

impactan la santidad de la vida humana y de la familia,

referentes a la guerra y otras formas de violencia,

pobreza, etc., apelan a la moral y a las soluciones éticas

para que sirvan al bien común. Esos asuntos también

hacen una demanda moral sobre los Católicos, para

testificar el Evangelio y sus valores en el mercado, que

afirman la dignidad de todos los seres humanos.

En su pastoral, En la Llegada del Nuevo Milenio, el

Papa Juan Pablo II lamenta el hecho de que muchos de

los Católicos no conocen o no aprecian las enseñanzas

sociales de la Iglesia. Las tristes consecuencias son, que

muchos de ellos adoptan una actitud indiferente ante la

política.

Como el Papa bien lo sabía, por sus experiencias

personales –la pérdida de muchos amigos Judíos de su

infancia en los campos de concentración– demasiados

son los que sufren por el silencio de los Cristianos y los

Católicos.

Declaración Unida de los Ministerios de Respeto a la Vida y Justicia y

Paz sobre el Reporte de Histerectomías y Otros Abusos en el Centro de

Detención de Inmigración en el estado de Georgia

Los Ministerios de Justicia y Paz; y Respeto a la Vida en la Oficina de Dignidad Humana, apo-

ya fuertemente las investigaciones en el Centro de Detención del Condado de Irwin, una facili-

dad del Servicio de Inmigración en el estado de Georgia. Una queja en la Oficina del Inspector

General de alguien que ventiló el reporte aterrador testimonial de inmigrantes en el centro,

incluyendo histerectomías realizadas a mujeres inmigrantes detenidas sin su consentimiento.

Esto alega que algunas mujeres recibieron el procedimiento en un alarmante numero sin que

les explicaran el procedimiento. Una de las detenidas declaró que “pareciera que están experi-

mentando con nuestros cuerpos.” También hacemos un llamado inmediato para que revoquen

la licencia medica a esa centro de detención y a agencias afiliadas.

Esas alegaciones representan una afrenta absoluta a la dignidad humana y una clara violación

a los derechos humanos. El ministerio de Justicia y Paz consistentemente aboga en contra de la

construcción y operaciones de prisiones privadas. Continuamente carecen de una apropiada

observación de que posiblemente acciones de maldad permitidas como estas que se mencionan.

La Iglesia Católica alrededor del mundo sirve como un abogado para inmigrantes, documenta-

dos o indocumentados, para que reciban el trato apropiado por parte de los gobiernos que sos-

tienen su dignidad humada como personas hechas a imagen y semejanza de Dios.

El ministerio de Respeto a la Vida nos enseña que las histerectomías violan la ley natural y el

diseño de Dios para las mujeres cuando se hace para restringir la procreación. Una histerec-

tomía forzada viola profundamente la dignidad humana y no puede ser llamada de otra mane-

ra que maldad. Si las alegaciones se comprueban como verdaderas, estaremos enlutando el re-

galo potencial de la vida perdida debido a los procedimientos.

La Oficina para la Dignidad Humana estará actualizando nuestras redes en cuanto nos llegue

mas información y aumenten las oportunidades para actuar. Por favor oremos para que la ver-

dad salga a la luz y que tomemos acción, de tal manera que el abuso que se ha reportado ahora

nunca vuelva a suceder.

Back-to-school September is such a stressful

time for families. Add the reality of COVID-19—

with parents trying to work from home, kids’

schedules often up in the air—and it gets all the

messier. Even if you don’t have children at

home, you probably know people who do and

are stressing. How can we all find balance?

Honor the sabbath in whatever way you are

able, by hitting the pause button—even for a

few hours. “Human life has a rhythm of work

and rest,” says the Catechism of the Catholic

Church. “The institution of the Lord’s Day helps

everyone enjoy adequate rest and leisure to cul-

tivate their familial, cultural, social, and religious

lives.” Plan ahead for this coming Sunday.
