    especting all possible choices you

might have made, we are here tooer you something new, a new

concept of recent origin, its essenceprimeval the concept of the village.

For where can we take the best rest fromthe city but in what is totally opposite tothe city?

Rrhythm of nature, of the changes ofseasons, the transformation of days into

nights, the rhythm of heartbeats the oneand true natural order of things.

Leaning upon the river banks, lined-up inthe endless plain, scattered upon moun-tain valleys and peaks, robed in forest,

plum orchards and vineyards, the villagesof Serbia exude tranquility.Immersed in nature in the first instants of

light intoxication we feel we need not doanything. Only observe. Whatever

surrounds us will exert curative eects.

topped-o with hospitality already withthe first contact within the boundaries of

hospitality is not the result of drilling, training, of learning, of what has beenexpected. It is hearty, simple and natural.Of the kind used to welcome dear guests, relatives. Traditionally a grain of salt and abite of cake bread are a part of it, and aspring-water, just to wash o the roaddust; if, however, you decide to experi-ment, you can have a choice of home-madebrandy, double-stilled brandy, brandieswith plant aromas added, wine from thebarrel or fruit-juice extractedfrom the fruits picked up in theneighboring orchards. Some hosts will welcome youwith the fruit preserve made ofdierent fruits, following thetradition of a particular region,

with honey and water and, inany case, with warmth andsmiles.

From Vojvodina in thenorth, all over thewestern, central, eastern and southern

    Serbia, the villagehouseholds furnish

    their guest-rooms inaccordance with the

    tradition of theirregion. Most often,

this is a small journeyto earlier times when

life was not lived in unison, instandardized patterns, but was follow-ing a specific feeling for beauty, for

warmth, tucked-in and comfortable.Made by hand, most often, not by amachine. Surrounded by a multitude ofdetails reminding one of those times, you will sleep on downy pillows inwooden beds, in painted rooms with aquince or two upon the cabinet, or a

rooms like these guarantee is a sound

discoveries you will make while stayingin the village.

closest to the smells we know. Varicol-ored first of all, crossbred into specialssorts, with samples from the gardens oftheir relatives, planted in flower-pots,

in old pots and pans (blue colors withwhite spots dominating), the smells

of the village flowers reach thelast nook and cranny of the

village garden. Here, flowerslive their lives with theirhosts in a special harmony, atevery corner, and have ratherpersonal names, like beautifulKata, handsome Jova, a little

earring. In the village, mornings, noons, eveningsand nights smell dierent.

    colors and completelydierent sounds.

    SOUNDS

Rooster is one of the mostfrequently used symbols of the village.Frankly, he is impossible to exclude so, whatyou are left with is to wake up slowly andstart toward the morning. In the village you

will hear the creaking of the sweep, mostoften in Vojvodina; all over Serbia this is thecreaking of the well winch while the ropeand the tin bucket on its end descend into

the chicken-coop, the place where the hensproudly announce that they have laid anegg, the barking of the dog, most often aspotty mongrel rejoicing in the presence ofhis master, the crackling of the fire started

for heat or for preparing a meal are only

symphonies of the crickets, the frogs fromthe neighboring pond or stream are usuallyevening performances.

    TASTES

It is a known fact that many village house-holds used to live their quite ordinary livesbuying from the shops only their share of

salt, coee and sugar. In other words, everything else they needed they producedthemselves, as they are doing now in theso-called cottage industry. From meal tomeal, the cuisines dier from region toregion, from tradition to tradition.

What they have in common aresound home-made ingredients, unhurried preparation of themeals and enchanting tastes.

cake bread from umadija, and cracklingsand fritters, cheese pies, corn breads, pumpkin pies, beans and stued dried

peppers, wedding-style sauerkrauts, roastsand grills, prosciutto and kajmak, cottageand fatty cheeses, are the tastes of thevillages of Serbia. Traditional recipes bring toyour dinner table the food that is pure art, oered with the seasoning one can never andnowhere buy the love that the hostessesprepare their dishes with.

    ART

Village is the most direct and the mostreliable guardian of tradition. What charac-terizes the Serb people and other peoplesliving in Serbia, in the form of character andart is originally kept in the village becausethe village is our point of origin.

Most often self-taught, the art of thevillage is amazing. Like a painting,

woodcutting, like music, like a drawing,

a dance, embroidery, weave, almostforgotten craft, that art gladdens one,

relieves and renews. It is a fireworks colors

and sounds, but dance, first of all. A dream

    fosters legends, traditions, myths, beliefs.

However, there is a special art which gives

of living. Only a piece of the art is enough

to feed our souls, separate what is impor-tant from what is not, to established the

desired tranquility and oer the balance to

our city lives.Should one accept this challenge?

One of the best ways of reaching the level of

such a love are the Vojvodina salai. Slightlyremoved from the rest of the world, they

attract us by their special charm of times past, preserving and fostering tradition and all

    characteristics of Vojvodina.

they are scattered upon the plain, on the river

banks, or near the lakes, all over Vojvodina. Assome of them have existed for two hundred

years, with the passage of time they havebecome museums of a special way of life. In

them, a multitude of objects has been gathered

and preserved, objects that people have madeuse of in the fields, in the house, in the

backyard. Special patina and the beauty of theold iron, hemp, picture frames, photographs,

loom, laces, then coaches, plowshares or

harnesses decorate the salai. Brick furnacesthat are even today used as heat sources in

some of the salai, pregnant with heat,

fragrant yellow quinces on them, or jars of

fruit preserve with compulsory round lemonring stuck upon the glass, and the eiderdown

one goes to sleep under with the falling of thenight are just an added spice to this heat.

    THE THRONE CITY

As early as 50,000 years ago, man usedto live in these parts. Right there, onFruka Gora, the Romans erected thetown of Sirmium (Sremska Mitrovicatoday), one of the four throne cities of theRoman Empire.

    THE NORTHERN MOUNT ATHOS

Fruka Gora is also a place of intensespiritual charge created by the presence of16 orthodox monasteries known by theircharacteristic architecture, rich treasur-ies, libraries and frescoes some of which,

like Privina Glava, date back to the 12thcentury. Among the best known FrukaGora monasteries are Kruedol, Ravanica,Grgeteg, Staro Hopovo, Novo Hopovo,Kazak.... Also, Fruka Gora enjoys thestatus of a national park.

What can one find on the menu of the

traditional Vojvodina cuisine? For the firstcourse you can expect homemade ham,

a bicycle or learn to ride a horse, tonavigate in a boat or bump along in a

coach, to bathe, water ski or go sledging on

the ice-covered lake. You might decide totest your skills in some of the old crafts or

folk art. You can keep silent, sing, listen,

laugh loudly and contentedly, exchangepleasantries with the host....What you definitely cannot do is not fall in

    love with Vojvodina.

    UNUSUAL VOJVODINA

In addition to the usual, expected museums, ofthe kind big cities have, Vojvodina boasts of a

Bread Museum in the Srem village of Peinci, the Tobacco Museum in Teleka, the village notfar from Sombor, the Bee-Keeping Museum ofthe ivanovi family from Sremski Karlovci are only some of those. When the Silk DamaskTextile Shop from Bezdan, the only one inEurope, is added to this collection, or thePastry Shop of the Janovi family fromSombor, the Collection of folk costumes of the

ON THE WINE CARD OF THE TITANICpeople in Austria and Hungary were not

brought without a crate of Bermet or some

the value of the Karlovac Bermet, highlyappreciated, particularly at the court in

During the reign of Austria-Hungary, Karlovci

once she tried Bermet, asked about theorigins of the beautiful wine and, learning of

its origins, decided to free the Fruka Goramales from the obligation to go to war and

umadija is a spiritual and cultural centerof Serbia. It was umadija that gave

Serbia everything that is characteristic ofSerbia its mark, its seal, its graft. Here, one listens to the trumpet, at the gatheringspeople dance the kolo, here the cold days aremade warmer by "the tea of umadija", hotbrandy, and the youth at the village gather-

ings pass the time listening to the stories ofthe Serb heroes and voivodes, of famousbattles and great victories. It may be that, because of such a strong historical heritage, every stone from this region has a story totell. A special type of stone marker arewayside gravestones addressing the wayfar-ers and informing him of the history of theregion or a famous place while some ofthem only asks him to stop, to rest, catch

breadth. Near Topola, in the village ofBournja, in the style of the traditionalwayside gravestones a unique stone obeliskhas been erected and the verses of a poemby Vasko Popa inscribed: "If your feet arekissing the ground, come. If they are

Wines from the valley, from the royal cellaron Oplenac, brandies from aak, Kraljevoand Aranelovac are the drops of the juiceof history turned to tradition.

small and great rivers flow, like ZapadnaMorava, Studenica, Ibar, Grua. Numerousnatural wells with unusually cold anddrinkable water, with tested medicinal

    THE LILAC VALLEY

When the Serbian king Uro I Nemanji

married the French princess Helen of Anjou,to show his welcome, he issued an order to

have all soers of lilac known at the time to beplanted along the whole course of the Ibar

river that she had to pass through. It is

probable that the bride, Helen of Anjou, hadnot seen her husband to be before, but his

wedding welcome was such as to bind her

her suite had to cover was accompanied withthe scent of lilacs. With a single royal gesture

that turned the Serb warriors, for a while at

least, into the gardeners, the king earned forSerbia more than he had taken with all the

    previously waged wars.

survived the most dicult times thanks to

joint eorts of relatives, neighbors and

friends. It is this type of tradition that isthe basis of the Rajac Mowing when, accompanied by original folk songs,

toward the midsummer, the fields on the

mountain sides are mowed. At the foot ofRajac, in the vicinity of Ljig, there is

    GUA THE EXOTIC NATURE

    OF THE SERBIAN TRUMPET

Today, Gua is an international capital of the

trumpet, the place that positive vibrationscome from, spontaneity and joy, also contained

in the declaration of the best known trumpet

player of all times, Miles Davis, "I didn't knowit was possible to play trumpet this way!" In

August every year, when the Festival banner israised and when more than 200 trumpet

players together start playing the hymn of theFestival "Sa Ovara i Kablara", those present

get the feeling that the mountains themselves

rises and, after the traditional first toast, a

    merry-making unrivaled anywhere in the

region will start and will continue for a number

for music, for trumpets in particular, is almosttwo centuries old. Ever since the reign of prince

Milo Obrenovi who, in 1831, ordered thefoundation of the first military orchestra, the

sound of the trumpet that lifts the soul and

warms the body is an unavoidable ingredient ofthe festivities. In Gua, nobody can resist its

    magic.

Permeated with the spirit of authentic folklore, the Dragaevo Festival of the Trumpet Playershelped the name of Serbia become known all

over the world by its rich and unique tradition,

by the known, good music, supreme entertain-ment and sincere hospitality.
