Brave staff from Sutherlands in Howick bared almost all to join in the Dare Devil run which was held on Friday 8th November, to raise awareness of men’s cancers.

Local lads run to raise cancer awareness

October was a bumper month for foreign visitors to Howick

with 2 648 overseas tourists admiring the waterfall from the viewing platform.

The total number of visitors recorded by Friends of the Falls volunteers was 10 249, which was slightly down on the Octo-ber fi gures last year. The busiest day was Saturday 5th October with 921 visitors, including tour groups in four coaches.

Foreign countries supply-ing the most tourists were Germany (732), Holland (728), England (290) and Belgium (176). In addition to the main groups, there were visitors from Austria, Canada, India, Mozambique, Poland, Reunion, South Korea, Spain, Switzer-land, Sweden, Australia and the USA.

South African visitors during October totalled 7 601, including school groups from Ladysmith, Estcourt, Matatiele, Durban, Underberg, Tugela Ferry, Port Shepstone and Gauteng.

The Gorge Walk leading to the base of the waterfall has

been temporarily closed due to its overgrown state but a major clean-up has been scheduled for 16th November. The trail will be opened again from 19th November and a tourism trainee

will be available as a guide.Six interns who were recent-

ly interviewed by the Howick-uMngeni Community Tourism Organisation (HUCTO) will soon be welcoming visitors

to the falls and working in the uMngeni Experience tourism information offi ce, which is now open seven days a week.

MUNICIPAL Notice No 26/2013 states that representatives of the

municipality will be visiting properties - “to identify and verify which households have outstanding title deeds”

Unless this notice only refers to properties acquired through the state this process seems very questionable for the following reasons:

1. The required information could be obtained from the Deeds Offi ce at minimal cost.

2. The council’s valuers must have access to all property descriptions together with title deed numbers

3. The cost of deploying staff for this exercise could be better spent, eg fi xing roads?

4. How will the staff doing the rounds ascertain whether the occupant/owner has valid title deeds?

I don’t believe that any prop-erty owner is obliged to provide this information to a total stranger whose motives are best described as opaque.

The council should inform the public what the real motive for this survey is? Failing this the action will be an exercise in futil-ity with the resultant wasted costs.

A. L. Norman

An exercise in futility

I AM all for giving credit where credit is due but forgive me for being somewhat

sceptical when I read Ted Smith’s congratulations to the Municipality for tackling the pothole problem. I sincerely hope the hard working team in Wear Ave has done a better job than the people who frequently fi ll in the potholes in Mare, Gush and Drew Avenues. Where we live, after a couple of weeks the holes are back with revenge leaving the road looking like a lace doily.

The maintenance in these roads is totally inadequate and simply does not stand up to the wear and tear of traffi c use. I suppose it is one way to get rich. Keep fi lling the same potholes! Get even richer if the maintenance company also owns a car repair and tyre company! If Wear Ave wears well, this is an appeal to the Municipality to send the same maintenance team (make sure the lady is included!) to our part of the village.

Sheila Berry

Road looks like a lace doily!

THE Howick-uMngeni Community Tourism Organisation (HUCTO)

is delighted to announce that the Information Offi ce at Howick Falls is now open every day, including Sundays and Mondays. HUCTO has secured some funding from the uMngeni Municipality and so extra staff can be employed to assist visitors and tourists.

Please call in to see us at the Info Offi ce – we have stocks of the new Midlands Meander brochure and will try to answer as many questions as possible.

The offi ce is still a bit bare as we have no furniture. We need a table and one or two chairs – and more brochures from HUCTO

members, please. We will then improve the

garden and, on 16 November, HUCTO and MEDA (Midlands Economic Development Agency) will join forces to do a major clean-up around the Falls area, especially the Gorge Walk and Bush Golf site.

Our sincere thanks to the staff at the uMngeni Municipality for their assistance with funding. We can assure you and the people of Howick that HUCTO will do its very best to attract more tourists, visitors and coaches to Howick and the Midlands, thus boosting the local economy.

Lorraine Bryant, HUCTO Secretary

Tourist Info Office now open daily

THE Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa (PRISA) is to establish

a regional chapter in the KZN Midlands when several Midlands businessmen and women will meet in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday, 19th November, at 5:00pm. to offi cially form the new chapter.

Durban has an active Public Relations chapter of PRISA, and practitioners across the coun-try are serviced by the organiza-tion’s Head Offi ce in Johannes-burg. Throughout the year numer-ous seminars, lectures and confer-ences are presented by PRISA in major cities PRISA also endorses several training programmes for students entering the profession.

Local membership becomes a global membership because members are automatically recog-nised by the Global Alliance for Public Relations & Communica-tion Management.

The Pietermaritzburg meeting will be addressed by John Tungay on “The value of Public Relations

in Marketing.” After preparing the fi rst memoranda for the SABC to introduce television in South Africa in 1960, John Tungay co-founded the Natal branch of the Public Relations Institute in 1962 while he was National Public Relations Manager of Lever Brothers. He still operates as a Chartered Public Relations Practitioner of PRISA.

Since those formative years Tungay received the Marketing Award of the Year from the SA Institute of Marketing Manage-ment in 1976 and more recently an honorary doctorate in literature for his contribution to coordi-nated public relations and product marketing in Europe and South Africa.

Membership of PRISA is likely to be of particular interest to persons involved in journalism and market research. Those who wish to attend the inaugural meet-ing of PRISA in Pietermaritzburg, are requested to contact Shanna Moreno on 033-330 4940 or John Tungay on 082 739 9087.

Public Relations Insitute to establish Midlands branch

John Tungay who will address the meeting on “The value of Public

Relations in Marketing.”

WE thank Dick and Betty Pedlar for arranging the

Annual East Griqualand “Get Together” Dinner at the Fern Hill Hotel.

It was wonderful to be able to get together and remem-ber those days…ah…those days…when we were younger, sprightlier, full of energy and ready to meet anything the future might have in store.

It was most rejuvenating to share our past experiences and current circumstances with each other. Many old friend-ships were renewed and new ones started.

Thank you too, to Fern Hill Hotel and Staff, the dinner was superb as was the service.

Once again thank you Dick and Betty and we cannot wait for next year.

FAIRFIELD Dairy, based in Howick, was once again awarded a PMR Africa Golden Arrow in their

Kwazulu-Natal Provincial Survey of Leaders and Achievers. This Awards Breakfast is held on an annual basis and features many well known businesses in Kwazulu-Natal winning similar awards in their categories. Fairfi eld Dairy has won this award several years running and it is awarded to “Companies and institutions doing most in their sectors over the past 12 months to stimulate the economic growth and development of the Kwazulu-Natal Province.” This is now the fourth time in succession that Fairfi eld Dairy has won this award.

This award comes on the back of recent infrastructural development at Fairfi eld Dairy which saw their operations combined into one facility in Howick at their factory alongside the N3 Highway. This amalgamation has allowed Fairfi eld Dairy to grow due to the increased effi -ciency of the operations, as well as the team, which is over 300 strong.

Fairfi eld Dairy is proud to have been awarded the PMR Golden Arrow once again and would like to thank all those who continuously support them and make it possible to receive this recognition.

some 1100 youth from Southern Africa at an International Youth Conference held at the Bahá’i National Centre in Johannesburg in September.

The participants from uMngeni and other parts are all active participants in the world-wide community building programme sponsored by the Bahá’i Faith. The Johannesburg conference was one of 114 such conferences, all following the same programme, being held all over the world between July and October this year.

The aim of the conference is to help the youth make plans for a life of service dedi-cated to the betterment of the world. The youth studied together and discussed what capacities and values they would need to be able to pursue a career and at the same time contribute to the material and spiri-tual transformation of the world – starting with their own neighbourhoods.

One of the key pathways of service was to be trained as a ‘junior youth animator’. These animators work with older children (11-14 years ole) to help them navigate the diffi cult transitions that occur during that period of life and to support them in making healthy, moral and safe choices about life, study and relationships.

THE Bonitas Radox Golden Gate Challenge celebrated its 3rd

birthday this year, with 250 excited runners lining up to the start on Friday 25th October.

Day 1 of the race saw runners tackle the legendary Ribbok Trail – 27km’s of seri-ous trail running! The Little Serengeti, one of the magical hidden corners of Golden Gate National Park, treated runners to herds of animals and spectacular views of the park. Day 3 of the challenge offered participants a breath-taking sunrise bathing the National Parks rock forma-tions in shades of red, orange

and yellow.This spectacular scenery

is home to one of Southern Africa’s few remaining popu-lations of Bearded Vulture, a critically endangered bird of high altitude landscapes. The conservation of Golden Gate National Park is criti-cal in forming a continuous protected area corridor along the length the Drakensberg/Maluti Mountain range. This in turn provides safe and suit-able habitat and food for this endangered bird.

Overall Tracy Zunckel took 1st place in the Long Distance Ladies race, with Trish Bahl-mann in 2nd and Helen Squir-rel-Armstrong in 3rd place.

Matt Kretzmann won the 3rd Stage, but overall Eric Ngubane still took the race title - leading with just over a minute. Matt Kretzmann took 2nd place with Gerhard Fouche taking honours in 3rd place.

The funds raised from this event are vital for the conser-vation of the Bearded Vulture, amongst others such as the threatened Cape Vulture. SANParks and their dedicated Honorary Offi cers need all the assistance that they can get in ensuring the ongoing protec-tion of this beautiful reserve and the conservation of sever-al different species.
