THE run up to the ‘Stories of Change’ exhibition will be happening in Howick

over the next few months and through the exciting partnership of the Howick uMngeni Museum (HuM) and the Midlands Meander Education Project it encourages teachers and learners to explore their local history and discover the magic of history in their own neighbourhood.

This year’s exhibition theme is “1914 and 2014”. Schools are invited to explore the changes that have happened in the past 100 years in a variety of different areas. Information packs and entry forms will be available from 28 February at the Howick uMngeni Museum near the Howick Falls. Teachers and learners are welcome to visit the museum and explore local history, learning and knowledge and make connec-tions for their own exhibition. At 2pm on Wednesday 5 March 2014 there will be an afternoon workshop hosted at the museum to enable teachers and learners to understand how museums work, how exhibitions are put together and how to exhibit their work. Please register and book for this workshop when picking up the information pack.

During May 2014 museums all around the world will be work-ing with their local communities

to show how “Museum collec-tions make connections.” The ‘Stories of Change’ exhibition will be opening on Friday 16 May to co-incidence with Inter-national Museum Day. Visitors to the museum for the follow-ing three weeks will be able to vote for their favourite school’s project. After the success of last year’s ‘Stories of Change’ exhibi-tion which brought lots of colour and creativity to the museum as well as increased local and visi-tor interest, this year’s exhibition should be even more fascinating and informative.

For further information on entering the exhibition please call into the Howick uMngeni Muse-um. For information on the work of the Midlands Meander Associa-tion Education Project please visit the MMAEP facebook page or www.mmaep.co.za

THE Umgeni Water Marathon, set to take place at the Midmar Dam Resort

outside Howick on Sunday 16 March, will be celebrating its 17th annual running in conjunction with National Water Week.

Corporate Stakeholder Manag-er for Umgeni Water, Shami Harichunder, stated that he was delighted that Umgeni Water is able to support this exciting marketing venture for yet another year, especially seeing as 2014 is also Umgeni Water’s 40th anni-versary of being able to deliver safe and refreshing drinking water to 6,1 million consumers.

The event is organized jointly, on behalf of Umgeni Water, by Collegians Harriers and Howick Athletic Club, and incorporates 4 races, namely a 42,2km marathon run, which serves as a Comrades Marathon and Two Oceans Mara-thon qualifying event, a 32km run, a 15km run and a 15km walk.

The 42,2km and 32km runs, which start at 06h00, will be limited to a total of 1000 entrants. These are pre-entry events only and close on Sunday 9 March.

Pre-entries may be done online at www.collegiansharriers.co.za.

The 15km run and 15km walk, which

start at 06h30, will be limited to the fi rst 500 entrants. Online entries for these two events also close on Sunday 9 March, but manual entries will again be taken on Saturday 15 March, when registration for all events takes

place, from 13h00 to 17h00 at the Midmar Dam Resort, provided that the 500 limit has not been reached. Only entries received by Sunday 9 March will receive a free T-shirt.

The race entry fee will be R160.00 for the 42,2km and 32 km events, with a temporary license fee of R30.00 for non-club members, and R100.00 for the 15km run or walk, with a tempo-rary license fee of R20.00 for non-club members.

Armour for life These are my number ones. The blazer and tie I wear each day at Michaelhouse. To you they might seem like simple clothing and adornment. But they are much more than that. Though they are light, they carry weight. The weight of integrity. The weight of humility, compassion, courage and understanding. They are my identity and armour. They give me the courage to learn, to discover and to embrace the opportunities that life will present to me. And when I leave my school, I will continue to wear them inside of me. My number ones might appear as a simple blazer and tie – but they are the makings of a man.

Boys today. Men of principle tomorrow.

THE next meeting of Howick Art Society (HARTS) will be on 3rd March at the Lions

Hall, uMngeni Reserve. In the morning at 9:00am

there will be a Figure Drawing Workshop. The workshop will be presented by Morey Comrie and Natalie Fossey. Morey was past

Chairman of MACS and a founder of the Marks groups. Natalie has a Fine Arts Degree and currently lectures in art at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Both have exhib-ited extensively nationally and internationally. They will bring along a model to pose and both will give constructive suggestions and

help to people attending the workshop. The cost will only be R30 for members and R50 for non-members. There is no better way of co-ordinating the brain, eye and hand than with fi gure studies. Come along and take advantage of this oppor-tunity. HARTS is subsidizing the cost. Please bring drawing paper and preferred drawing medium. The workshop will end with tea at 12:00midday.

At 1:30pm we will have

our normal HARTS meeting. Liz Speight will share her extensive knowledge on different aspects of drawing. This will be followed by tea and a critique by Pat Caldwell. For more information contact Anna on 084 573 1784.

HARTS ended 2013 with two good exhibitions - one at Fair-ways and the other at our annual Christmas Party. HARTS theme for the club’s year-end exhibition was ‘Window’. There was really such a variety of interpretation of this theme; it is a real eye opener. This exhibition is now on show at Amber Glen and is open to the public. So come and have a browse, Liz Speight will be at the exhibition for a ‘walkabout’ and to answer questions from 2:30pm on 1 March. For more information contact Jo on 033-239 4237.

SFISO ESIHLE Lower primary school in Mpophomeni has

benefi tted from a generous donation from uMgungundlovu district municipality, who last week handed over school uniforms to more than 50 pupils. The district municipality’s Deputy Mayor, Thandiwe Fucwana Zungu said the uniform campaign started last year, when they donated to more than four schools across different local municipalities within the district.

“This year we have decided to assist about eight schools. That’s why we have earmarked

this

school,” said Zungu, who was accompanied by some of the district ward councillors. Zungu also called for the parents to support their children in their schools, adding that they should work closely with the munici-pality.

School Principal Dudu Ndlovu Ngcobo thanked the municipality on its gesture, saying the school faces challeng-es of poverty. “We are lost for words to express our gratitude as this will go a long way in assist-ing our pupils,” she said.

Ward Councillor Thandekile Nxele urged the municipality to cast the net wider in its bid to reach out to needy schools. “Most of the schools in Mpoph-omeni are beset with problems where most pupils do not have uniforms. My wish is for the municipality to extend its assis-tance to more local schools,” said Nxele.

HANG on to your seats – the fi rst Durban Land, Sea and Air Festival

coming to the Durban beachfront on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd March promises some adrenaline accelerating, non-stop land, sea and air action for all. And it’s free to the public!

The festival’s main attraction is the never-before-seen-in-South-Africa Sky Grand Prix of Aerobatics where the best South African and international pilots will perform heady aerial moves and races over the ocean to see who are the fi nest and fastest pilots. The planes will race, twist, turn and be pushed to the extreme as they blitz through multi-storey pylons placed on the beachfront piers to complete a fl awless aero-batic routine. A ranking system using the National Championships score and a regional contest was conducted to choose the South African participants. So far the top six confi rmed South African pilots are Nigel Hopkins, Patrick Davidson, Mark Hensman, Barrie

Eales, Bertus Du Preez and John-nie Smith. The last four positions will be fi lled after the fi nal contest in Parys on the 2nd March.

Festival-goers will also be treated to a variety of displays

by the SA Navy and enforcement services as well as other water sport competitions. These include the navy brass band and a subma-rine demonstration. Live music, air-themed movies and other land

activities will keep the crowds going well into the night.

Festival organiser, Brian Emmenis from Capital Sounds, says, “We have been planning the festival since mid-2013 and are

very excited to bring this event to Durban. Nowhere else in the country are people able to watch so many exhilarating displays over and in the sea. The Sky Grand Prix of Aerobatics alone will feature world champion pilots who compete against each other regularly on the world aerobatic circuit. It’s going to be electric!”

The free, three-day festival is proudly brought to the city by eThekwini Municipality and the KwaZulu-Natal government. “Due to the beachfront’s easy access and the fact that the festi-val is free, this event will provide the opportunity for all members of the community to experience the thrills and exciting action that makes it unique. We look forward to welcoming the international participants and all the visitors to our beautiful city, and we are confi dent that this will be another exceptional and exciting event experience in Durban,” says Vivi-enne Holden, senior event manag-er at eThekwini Municipality’s Event Offi ce.

A TEAM of enthusiastic WESSA staff in KZN supported paddlers on the

fi rst day of the 2014 Dusi Canoe Marathon, offering splashes of cold water, refreshments and snacks to paddlers as they passed the WESSA refreshment station. WESSA’s involvement in this event aims to raise awareness about the importance of fresh water and the state of our rivers

in South Africa. WESSA has a Memorandum of Understanding with Canoeing SA to ensure wise stewardship of surface waters across the country.

WESSA would like to thank the following local businesses in the Midlands for their generous support during this event:

Ebrahim from Howick Meat Centre for some scrumptious boerewors and beef patties and

Stanley Ward from Natalia Market Agents in PMB Fresh Produce Market for donating some mouth-watering watermelon and bananas for paddlers. Last but not least, thanks to Tracey Allwood from Chester Farm in Ixopo for donating 50kg bags of potatoes as a famous snack for the paddlers.
