Analytical Week in Copenhagen favoured by excellent timing

The organizing committee, chaired by Steen Kold-Christensen from FOSS and driven by show secretary Sanne Bastholm was extremely lucky with the timing of the annual event, as Copenhagen presented itself at its absolutely best – beautiful weather, the sun shining on the spectacular buildings of very mixed architecture and a boat trip on the waterways allowed us to see the harbor and nearby islands, i.e. Paper Island with hundreds of Copenhageners enjoying the new Street Food concept.

Symposiums on chemometrics and food authenticity

On Sunday the Danish Chemometric Society hosted a minisymposium showcasing Danish chemometrics research and how the methods are used to test for authenticity of dairy and food in general. Scandinavia is one of the main centers for the development of chemometrics – with the result that chemometric methods are being used intensively at universities and within the industry. This pre-conference event attracted many students - next generation Analytical Week participants and fitted with the wishes of the younger generation very well – see later in this paper.

The grand midweek symposium this year highlighted the value of collaboration in defending the food chain against food adulteration.

Claus Heggum, see photo to the right introduced the theme of adulteration by aid of the unfortunate example of detection of melamine in Chinese baby milk powders.

A of range of initiatives, from new tracking and tracing approaches to a European food fraud network and the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration´s flying squad were presented, giving an encouraging picture of how the food sector is mobilizing to safeguard food authenticity.

Exhibition

Like last year most novelties centered around detection of medical residues – tests have been redesigned to fit specific purposes and many companies offer costumized test kits. e.g. AIM and Unisensor

The 2 „no-so-new“ newcomers Analytic Trust and Chemometec presented their respective products: A softwareplatform for remote monitoring, calibration and control of lab instruments and high performance somatic cell counters for labs with small analytic capacity needs. Both have already been introduced to the market and are now able to present reference installations, which doubtlessly will be scrutinized by potential new users.

Along with their own well established products, Bentley Instruments also presented a range of partner products i.e. laboratory robots from New Zealand-based Intellitec. Amyloid A –detection kit checking for subclinical mastitis, to reduce blanket therapy from TriDelta and other milk testing kits from Randox.

This year Raudzsus Electronics had joined forces with Delta Instruments demonstrating their equipment for sample preparation in combination with Delta Instruments in a mutual booth attracting lots of attention.

FOSS displayed their DairyScan, a cost-effective NIR-based analyser for smaller cheese factories, which together with Milkoscan Mars could provide these factories with a mini laboratory. The MilkoScan Mars is able check liquid milk for attempts of adulteration and freezing point on top of the basic parameters such as fat , protein, lactose and total solids by the use of FTIR technology. The NIR-based DairyScan will analyse fat and moisture in cheese.

“New measuring units and standardization” - main themes in this year’s IDF/ISO work.

Overall headlines for the finished and current projects in 2015/16 are definitely: “New measuring units and standardization”.

The recently adopted Standard no. ISO/IDF 19344/232 applies new units “Active Flouresesent Units “ and “Non Active Flourescence Units”for Flow Cytometric(FC) counting of bacteria in starter cultures. Furthermore 2 Action Teams work on conversion of FC-units back to the classic CFU´s within centralized raw milk testing.

Recording of milk Somatic Cells is also subject to updating. The project on Reference System for Somatic Cell Counting

(RSSCC) important to promote analytical equivalence, is proceeding in its working program. Thanks to the fruitful collaboration with the EU/JRC/IRMM RSSCC is supporting the realization of a primary reference material for somatic cell it is putting the building blocks to create a New international Neutral Body (NeuBo) where the organizations and companies involved in the dairy sector will be represented. This organization will have has main task to coordinate the activities of the RSSCC. To create a database and to use the data to characterize the primary reference material using a modern statistical model and to support the dairy analytical sector to be traceable in its measurements for a worldwide trust. Target audiences are laboratories, providers of reference materials and proficiency test services, regulatory supervisors, governmental and non-governmental organizations, i.e. all stakeholders of the dairy food chain dealing with (raw) milk analysis and analytical methods. The scope of RSSCC and of the NeuBo could be extended to other parameters as fat, protein, lactose,as well bacterial counting, ‘multivariate’ parameters in milk and milk products.

Another topic to provide equivalence is spectrum standardization. A paper will be published in the IDF bulletin to inform the instrument user on the key steps that influence the spectrum absorbance and the quality assurance action for the new parameters as fatty acids profile and others.

Personally we considered total bacteria recording as THE most interesting and groundbreaking topic of the Action teams. Many different recording strategies were explained and viewpoints exchanged thus enabling a much better understanding why countries – even within EU, have chosen different approaches to counting of total bacteria in raw milk.

An ambitious activity plan was adopted, which in less than one year will produce an IDF Bulleting plus a Fact Sheet to explain this complex topic to non-experts in order to support the current discussions in e.g. EU.

More detailed information on individual projects may be obtained joining the action teams, which are open to nationals from IDF-member countries or contact the authors.

Future Analytical Weeks

Ideas for development of Analytical Weeks – e.g. activities like the technical workshop on food fraud and presentations of the work done by universities and other scientists were brought forward by the younger participants. Furthermore streamlining of IDF- work procedures and knowledge share among Action Team leaders were suggested to create a more motivated working environment. In line with this, Sandra Casani made an extremely engaging and encouraging description of how she managed to make several experts cooperate on development of a standard in 3 years by intensive project management.
