COMOX — The École Robb Road Elementary teaching team uses the power of social learning to engage all students and deepen learning experiences.
Julia McCoid is a learning assistance teacher at École Robb Road Elementary, where Al Johnson is a vice-principal and teacher.
They share the teaching of a very
dynamic and energetic Grade 5 class.
McCoid found her students’ unique dynamism was quite a natural disposition.
“I have tested these students and they are mostly kinesthetic intelligence learners,” she stated.
McCoid is referring to Howard Gardner’s (now widely-known) theories on intelligence, where he describes people’s tendencies to prefer one or more types of intelligence.
Gardner describes
intelligence preferences such as logical/mathematical intelligence — where a student learns best using sequential, logical reasoning — and interpersonal intelligence, in which the student might best fi gure things out by talking them through.
Gardner describes several types of intelligence, but the one that McCoid refers to is a tendency to gravitate toward movement as a form of processing information and personal expression.
And in observing this Grade 5 class in action, there is indeed a preference for movement.
Traditionally, a group of kinesthetic students might have been deemed troublesome by old-fashioned standards. A student’s continual tapping of a pencil or inability to concentrate while sitting still might have been viewed as problematic to a traditional, lecturing teacher.
But, an understanding of the

student’s needs and making adaptations for what works for the students can generate a focused energy that can be quite awe-inspiring, as witnessed one Wednesday in Johnson and McCoid’s classroom.
This teaching team chose to use the school district’s Google Apps service to help students work collaboratively and create learning scenarios that provide more relevance to real-world skills.
In attempting to generate more interest in a subject matter that can be quite dry, such as the reasons for the formation of British Columbia, McCoid chose to have students collaborate on their research, using shared online documents, where students add to each other’s knowledge in an organic and dynamic manner.
Johnson wanted to take the students to the next step toward real-world collaboration, with the co-publication of material to an online Wiki. Here, students work in teams to generate presentations that are published to the class website.
Both teachers look for ways to generate interest and relevance to Ministry of Education-mandated learning outcomes that can sometimes seem dry and disconnected from the students’ lives.
These teachers’ plans required that the students have
specifi c, and sometimes complex, technical skills. But, how do you teach a group of students the skills they need when their preferred intelligence types and learning styles do not fi t a traditional lecture/practice format?
Not only do differing learning styles and intelligence preferences make a one-size-fi ts-all approach ineffectual, but each student learns at his or her own pace, so the odds of the teacher not going too slowly or too fast for the students is slim.
The key: Don’t teach them at all.
A massive, six-year study was completed in 2009 by Project Tomorrow (www.tomorrow.org), which involved the “largest collection of authentic, unfi ltered” stakeholder
participation in any known similar study, with the involvement of 1.85 million K-12 students in more than 23,000 schools and including 26,312 parents and 38,642 teachers.
The study report revealed three “essential elements” for effective, 21st-century education:
• socially-based learning helps students process and personalize their learning
• un-tethered learning allows students to not have to rely solely on teachers for information, and
• digitally-rich learning enables students to access and process material in a variety of ways, as well as driving productivity.
These are the very
tenants that McCoid and Johnson embodied when they chose to not teach their students the skills they would require. Instead, they generated teams of students in their computer lab, made the team members responsible for each other and provided a list of the skills they would need to demonstrate to complete the projects.
The students worked together to “fi gure things out” and questioned each other and taught each other.
These skills seem far more relevant to real-world scenarios than focusing on remembering facts.
The result was nothing short of fantastic.
The focused energy
in the room was not only palpable, it was overwhelming. If you did not observe what each student was doing and watch their focused attention, you might have thought that you were witnessing a party.
A list of skills that might have taken several classes to teach and practice was worked through in just 75 minutes. The teachers moved around the room observing and questioning.
“The room is full of energy, but you can see that every student is focused and engaged,” remarked Johnson. “I love seeing students helping each other, teaching each other. Very cool.”
“They love working together like this,” agreed McCoid. “Look at them moving, so excited. And they are learning so much.”

Golfer’s elbow is pain and infl ammation on the inner side of your elbow, where the tendons of your forearm muscles attach to the bony bump on the inside of your elbow.
Golfer’s elbow, or medial epicondylitis, is similar to its counterpart, tennis elbow.
The primary differences between these conditions are the location of the pain and the activity that leads to injury.
Golfers elbow occurs on the inside of the elbow, not the outside.
However, both conditions are caused by overuse of the muscles and tendons of the forearm.
This leads to tendonitis, or aggravation of the tendon where it attaches to the bone.
The pain of golfer’s elbow is usually at
the elbow joint on the inside of the arm; a shooting sensation down the forearm is also common while gripping objects.
Golfers elbow can be caused by a single violent action, or more commonly by repetitive strain injury.
This is where an action is performed repeatedly and pain gradually develops.
No one is immune from these injuries, but they are most common at the beginning of the golf season, or when the offending activity is increased in intensity or duration.
Golf is one common cause of these symptoms, but many other sport- and work-related activities can cause the same problem.
Many activities can lead to golfer’s elbow,
including golfi ng: Gripping or swinging the clubs incorrectly can take a toll on your muscles and tendons.
Racquet sports: Excessive topspin can hurt your elbow. Using a racket that’s too small, heavy or tightly strung also can lead to injury.
Throwing sports: Improper pitching technique in baseball or softball can be another culprit.
Other daily activities such as painting, raking, hammering, chopping wood, typing and other repetitive wrist, hand or arm movements can result in golfer’s elbow as well.
There are some things you can do to prevent golfers elbow.
Doing some wrist and forearm
strengthening before you start your chosen sport or activity can help to increase the strength of the muscles and reduce the stress on the attachment points of the tendon.
If you start to have trouble with pain in your elbow get your technique assessed by a coach to ensure that you are not putting too much stress through your elbow.
It’s also important to know when to rest. At the fi rst sign of elbow pain, take a break.
Often, a bit of rest at the right time is all that is needed to reduce the symptoms and get back to your sport.
Treatments for golfers elbow include: exercises to re-strengthen the forearm muscles, anti-infl ammatory medications, cortisone shots, and rest.
Often, taking a
rest from whatever activity is causing the problem, changing technique slightly and doing some exercise to rehabilitate the problem will be enough to reduce the symptoms in your elbow.
If you think that you may be getting a golfer’s or tennis elbow, get it checked early, so that it doesn’t turn into a long term condition which is diffi cult to fi x.

Mainstream Canada is the fi rst salmon farming company in Canada to be certifi ed under a new third-party standard which ensures that sustainable management of aquaculture includes First Nations values and interests.
An independent audit in March determined that Mainstream Canada’s practices at their Clayoquot Sound sites within the traditional territory of the Ahousaht First Nation meet the requirements of the Aboriginal Principles for Sustainable Aquaculture (APSA)
standard, established by the Aboriginal Aquaculture
Association (AAA).“APSA is a First
Nations-driven initiative that will ensure that aquaculture is carried out in a manner that respects First Nations culture, values and ensures protection of First Nations aquatic resources,” said Richard Harry, President of the AAA. “It is a positive approach to all issues: social, environmental and economic.
“This is the fi rst step forward to a nationally recognized aboriginal inclusive certifi cation program.”
Recognizing that
sustainable aquaculture development had the potential to play a major role in the diversifi cation and strengthening of the local and regional economies of First Nations the AAA was established in 2003.
The Association provides guidance and advice with respect to susta aquaculture development to First Nations and works with government and industry on issues related to the management and regulation of aquaculture that impact First Nations.
The APSA standard
requires First Nations and the applicant to work together and develop a local sustainability plan to ensure the aquaculture operations in their area are conducted in accordance with the principles in this standard and refl ect the specifi c values and interest of the local First Nation.
The Ahousaht First Nation has a population of approximately 2,000 people and is located on Flores Island in Clayoquot Sound.

“Our attitude towards salmon farming is one of continual improvement and we are grateful to be able to work with Ahousaht and the
AAA to achieve this high APSA standard,” said Laurie Jensen, Mainstream Canada’s Communications and Corporate Sustainability Manager.
“We look forward to using this certifi cation to work with Ahousaht to make the partnership even better and we recognize that it will be an important tool in the development of new partnerships with First Nations communities.”

PORT McNEILL — The local Communities in Bloom Society devoted a day to sweeping Scotch broom from its town.
But the effort will take a lot more than one day.
“A mature plant can produce 20,000 to 30,000 seeds, and each seed remains viable for 80 years,” said Mike DesRochers, a silvaculture expert with the Ministry of Forests in Port McNeill. “Without using herbicides, the best treatment is to go back every year the rest of our lives and cut it.”
Communities in Bloom organizer
Sharon Barratt was pleased her volunteer
crew was able to pile three large dump-truck loads of the invasive plant to be hauled for composting at 7 Mile Landfi ll.
The society, now
in its fourth year in Port McNeill, needed
a project to fulfi ll its environmental action requirement before provincial judges descend on the town in July to grade its activities.
With the broom taking over the vacant hillside between Pioneer Hill Drive and Campbell Way — the main road linking the town to Highway 19, they did not have far to look.
“That’s been neglected,” Barratt said of the proliferation of broom on the hill, which was cleared of alders four years ago when the Town hoped to make it more attractive to potential developers. “We’ve had a few volunteers from various groups who have tried to address it, but it’s a very big problem.”
The plant was introduced to southern Vancouver Island about a century ago, and quickly began spreading northward.
It can be found in large volumes along Highway 19 between Courtenay and Campbell River and recently expanded its territory to Port McNeill, both on the hill in town and along the highway just north of the Campbell Way intersection, where a water line was installed several years ago.
“They exchanged the alder for the broom,” DesRochers said of the lot-clearing that led to the invasion in town. “How it gets from the South to the North Island is primarily human. Wherever there’s soil disturbance, it’ll take hold. Anywhere they’re
putting in hydro lines or working on rights-of-way, you’ll see it spring up.”
As a forester, DesRochers is concerned about the possible long-term problems the broom and other invasive species like Japanese knotweed and Himalayan knotweed pose to the North Island’s forests and streams.
“The broom likes sun, but it’s somewhat shade-tolerant,” he said. “It’s a bit of a concern in areas where we’ve harvested and replanted small trees. We’re hoping our young trees can grow fast enough to overtop them.”
The worst way to remove broom, DesRochers said, is to pull the plant’s roots, since that creates the very soil disturbance that allows it to thrive and spread. Barratt’s volunteer crew used hand pruners, hand saws and one power saw to cut the plants just above the ground and below the lowest side shoot or branch.
Barratt said the crew consisted of 12 volunteers, and following its work day a substantial stand of the plants remained undisturbed.
“The number of volunteers we got was more than I expected but fewer than I hoped for,” said Barratt.
