COURTENAY — A solar hot water system is the latest energy-saving initiative at Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School, but it’s really only the tip of the iceberg.

Students, staff, School District 71 staff and MLA Don McRae recently unveiled four large solar panels on the school’s roof.

“I’ve been in education over 30 years. In my time in this racket, I don’t

know that I’ve ever been in a time where I’m seeing so many students and staff as engaged as they are about our facility, concern about energy, concern about our environment, and it is really cool to see,” said principal Bill Village. “What we’re here for today is another addition to something we’ve already got started in this school, a number of initiatives from staff and students around energy reduction. I think this is a wonderful fi rst

step, but it’s certainly not the last one.”

A couple of years ago, Isfeld installed solar panels on the south-facing wall of its gymnasium, and Village hopes the district will look at wind power for the school in the future.

Village is excited to incorporate the solar hot water system into the school’s science and math curriculum.

“It’s just not a piece of machinery up on the roof that the school district is hoping we save some money

from,” he said. “This is already becoming part and parcel of the educational component, which is more important. We’re very thankful that it’s here and we’re going to make good use of it. It’s going to be an alive part of our education here.”

This project is part of the school district’s focus on reducing greenhouse gases (GHG), explained Fred McGregor, the manager of energy conservation.

The solar hot water system was designed and constructed by local company Terratek Energy Solutions Inc.

“Bill mentioned the educational component and it also shows students that this is part of the new green economy, the idea that this sort of technology will become more prominent as time goes by, and it will provide jobs, it will provide incentives of money in the future because this is really the future of energy, not so much making energy but conserving energy,” said McGregor.

Funding was provided by the provincial government through the Public Sector Energy Conservation Agreement fund and Fortis Inc. (formerly Terasen Gas).

McRae cut the green ribbon to offi cially unveil the solar panels.

“The thing is what I think the younger generation does get is about conservation and about basically not using resources to the degree we can,” he said. “Canada is a very, very rich country compared to pretty much everywhere else in the world, and yes, we can afford to some degree to waste some resources, but it is absolutely essential that we don’t.”

While at Isfeld, McGregor presented a cheque for $771 to the school’s Environment Club.

The money comes from the district’s Energy Reduction Incentive Program.

“We measure the consumption of each school in the district, and if they saved electricity, we give

them half the savings back,” he said.

Isfeld earned the money through its Lights Out Lunch. Every Friday, Environment Club members go around the school turning out lights.

“It’s actually amazing that it’s really a self-sustaining cycle,” said club member Megan Lawrence, 15. “We do projects like this, and we get money for it, and we get money for our projects. It’s really cool.”

The next step for the Environment

Club is to create a community garden.

They already have compost bins, and the club is planning to build raised beds with fruits and vegetables.

“I think it’s so amazing it was just two of us who said we want to make a garden, and a year later, it’s materializing, and it’s something that’s involving the whole school,” said Lawrence. “There’s a lack of kids getting their hands dirty, so we’re hoping they’ll get excited. We’re excited.”

Lawrence and

fellow Environment Club members Kayla Swing, 15, and Emily Peterson, 16, believe teenagers are more interested in the environment than they used to be.

“It’s making a contribution to the world,” said Swing.

Peterson thinks the girls’ enthusiasm for the projects they are working on through the Environment Club comes from not being like the teenagers who are busy texting and using Facebook.

“It comes from wanting to set an

example that not all teenagers are like that,” she said. “People think teenagers can’t

do much and they don’t care, but I feel like we’re actually helping.”

Join the City of Campbell River and School District 72 on tonight at the Tidemark Theatre to celebrate Earth Week with Run for One Planet speakers Matt Hill and Stephanie Tait.

The duo ran across Canada and around the perimeter of the United States in one year to inspire environmental

action, one step at a time. Matt Hill and Stephanie Tait were the fi rst people to run around the continent of North America. They completed their journey in 2009, covering 11,000 miles with 420 marathons, burning more than three million calories, wearing out 30 pairs of Asics running shoes and raising more than $130,000 for their

Legacy Fund for Kids. The international speakers have shared their amazing story with more than 35,000 young leaders to promote positive environmental change.

The evening will also feature the winning fi lm and art piece entries from the Going for Green contest sponsored by School District 72,

Stephanie Tait and Matt Hill, with the 30 pairs of running shoes they wore out as the fi rst people to run across Canada and around the perimeter of the United States in one year, will tell their story Run for One Planet as part of Earth Week on April 20 at the Tidemark Theatre in Campbell River.

North Island College’s Global Learning Initiative will present an evening of fi lm, speakers, and opportunities focusing on Local and Overseas Volunteering Thursday, March 24 at 7 pm in the Stan Hagen Theatre at NIC’s Comox Valley campus.

Empowering Youth – Eco-Leadership

Across Africa, a fi lm by award winning, local director Ed Carswell highlights 18 African organizations that partnered with Canada World Youth to deliver the African- Canada Eco-Leadership Program. Carswell has travelled extensively in developing countries and in this fi lm you will meet eco-leaders in Senegal,

Burkina Faso, Kenya, Mozambique, and South Africa.

Jodie Rayner, a third-year nursing student at North Island College, will share stories and experiences from the summer of 2010 which she spent volunteering at Iris Ministries in Mozambique, Africa. Iris Ministries is a non-government, non-profi t organization with many programs, one being medical clinics in rural and remote African villages. Together with two registered nurses, Jodie provided free, basic healthcare to any and all village community members in need. David Moore from Africa Community Technical Services (ACTS) will also speak and there will be volunteerism displays where guests can learn more about how and where individuals have and can become involved.

In 2009, NIC nursing students and faculty travelled to Uganda, Nepal, and Mozambique as part of NIC’s Global Learning Initiative. Students and faculty will be returning to Nepal in May 2011. The intent of the project is to facilitate a greater understanding of global health issues, by learning about social and health practices in foreign settings.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and admission is by donation to NIC Global Learning. For further information, contact Beth Turner at 250-334-5000 ext. 4267 or visit www.nic.bc.ca.

The City of Campbell River Recreation and Culture Department and the Communities in Bloom Committee are pleased to be teaming up with Richard Barry to offer a program on xeriscaping at the end of April.

Xeriscaping refers to gardening in ways that reduce or eliminate the need for supplemental irrigation or landscaping with water conservation in mind.

Richard Barry has 27 years of landscaping experience in both commercial and

residential design and he is passionate about installing drought tolerant, low maintenance landscaping.

In the xeriscape program, Richard will share his knowledge of the seven principles of a beautiful garden, including: Planning and design; Soil analysis; Appropriate plant

selection; Practical turf areas; Effi cient irrigation; Use of mulches; Appropriate maintenance.

Participants should bring a notebook and pen to this class.

The program takes place at the Community Centre, 401-11th Ave on Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to noon. The cost $15.

Space is limited, and people can register for this informative program at either the Sportsplex or the Community Centre.

ALERT BAY - There has been a lot of hammering going on at the government dock, and structures are taking shape.

The fi ve large wooden pole structures are called Awakwes by the ‘Namgis First Nation.

Historically, Awakwes were used as meeting places for chiefs. The building of the Awakwes is part of the ‘Namgis First Nation Waterfront Improvement Project in Alert Bay.

The Awakwes are not only historical in nature, they also will beautify the waterfront of the ‘Namgis Reserve.

Once the initial Awakwe structures are completed, they will be barged over to the ‘Namgis Reserve where the brackets will be welded onto the galvanized plates on

top of the columns. Two of the

Awakwes will be placed along the new boardwalk and the remaining three will be standing between the end of the boardwalk and the U’mista Cultural Centre.

After installation, benches will be put into place and then a roof made of cedar shakes will be added.

The red cedar was milled by Stevie Beans; the fl oor timbers have been pressure treated.

An opening ceremony is expected to take place once the Awakwes are in position to celebrate the completion of the waterfront improvement.

The Awakwes are being constructed by local Alert Bay contractors Dave Lesie and Neil Langille along with Les Harris, Richard Smith Jr. and Henry Scow.

“Community input

was important to this project” said Wayne

Cook. “Several community

meetings were held at the council hall

before building took place.”

MidWeek / April 20, 2011 11

There will always be collectors of ‘things’; people who collect simply because they either can, or are compelled to do so.

With a Royal Wedding in the offi ng I have been inundated with people asking me what kinds of wedding souvenirs will make good investments for the future. The short answer is none; none at all!

Looking at the overall industry of Royal Commemorative-ware throughout the last 120 years or so we fi nd that after taking infl ation into account very few souvenir items have done little more than hold their value at best.

At worst many are completely valueless. The only people who really make any serious money out of commemorative items are the retailers and manufacturers.

As with any items which are specifi cally made to commemorate or celebrate an event we usually fi nd that many hundreds of thousands are produced.

Mass production of such promotional goods means that the items can be produced for little money so it follows that their eventual value will refl ect those minimal costs.

Even items from otherwise ‘quality’ producers such as Royal Doulton, Worcester, Tiffany and the like tend to have little more value than similar products which do not carry portraits or wording celebrating an event.

Yes, there are, and always will be, collectors of Royal Memorabilia, sporting events and even rock concerts.

But as regards to buying commemorative goods of any kind for an investment your odds

of picking a winner are few and far apart. The collector’s market is far smaller than one would imagine and very few items

will ever command a premium from discerning amongst them.

As for the current hullabaloo, according to ‘insider information’ I am informed

that the new Princess is to be formally addressed as Catherine rather than the somewhat diminutive and juvenile Kate.

Because the name change has presented the couple and the House of Windsor itself with a previously unforeseen potential for embarrassment, the Palace has done their best to ensure that producers of commemorative-wares show the Royal Cypher as ‘C.W.’ rather than the less than fl attering ‘W.C.’

Getting the initials the wrong way around could give a whole new meaning to the time honoured expression of being ‘on the throne’.

Over this last week I have been asked to appraise a vast variety of ‘collector’ pieces and have been sent pictures of such Royal items such as glass tumblers with rather cheap and nasty transfer prints commemorating a coronation, earthenware mugs depicting Charles and Diana’s wedding and dog-eared copies of magazines and newspaper cuttings showing a multitude of other assorted and not so memorable Royal events.

None of which, now the event has passed, has any real value in either a fi nancial nor aesthetic way.

Let’s face it, the meaning of the word ‘souvenir’ is ‘a memory’. Few of us ever get the opportunity to be actually involved in a Royal wedding, coronation, Silver

Jubilee or any other such event so why is there a somewhat hysterical mass need to buy items commemorating an occasion to which we have no involvement in whatsoever?

On so many occasions in the past I have visited homes where the owner has amassed an outstanding number of commemorative items, most of which have become dust encrusted and are rarely looked at; let alone ever used.

As interesting as such collections may at fi rst appear, they eventually become nought but a waste of both space and money.

Often the ‘collectors’ themselves have no actual memory of the event which was commemorated.

For example, where were you and what were you doing when Princess Alexandria got married, or when Queen Victoria celebrated her Jubilee year?

The memory of an event is just that, a fl eeting recollection that something once happened.

Surrounding oneself with commemorative-wares does not make us part of the event, it does not make us a ‘Royal’ or a part of the ‘inner circle’ it makes us just another clueless consumer of clutter. So before rushing out to buy a piece of Royal memorabilia think carefully – you may just be fl ushing your money down the W.C.

When you live in a city like Campbell River, it just seems natural to fi nd something to do in or on the water. There are boats of every kind out there and, now that spring has arrived, you may have seen some long slim dragon boats in the estuary by the Tyee Spit.

If you’ve wondered what dragon boating is all about, you will soon have an opportunity to fi nd out. On Saturday the BraveHearts

Dragon Boat Team will be having an “Open Boat” and membership drive at Dick Murphy Park. The club is accepting new members, male or female, 19 years of age or older. Both cancer survivors and supporter members are welcome to join. Rain or shine, the boat will be leaving the dock between 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. after a mini-ceremony to “awaken the dragon” so get there early to be part

of the fun.Dragon boating

originated in China over 2000 years ago but was fi rst introduced in Canada at Expo 86 in Vancouver. The BraveHearts Dragon Boat Team is operated under the non-profi t group, The North Island Dragon Boat Society, and is Canada’s fi rst co-ed dragon boat team whose membership is open to survivors of all types of cancer. They are also accepting

“supporter” members to join their boat crew. So, if you are a man or woman of adult age, are a cancer survivor, or would like to help offer your support by paddling as an associate member, the team would like to meet you.

If you are interested in joining this fun team, come to the Tyee Spit at noon on April 23 to fi nd out more and be outfi tted to board the dragon boat at 1 p.m.

Are you willing to ride the dragon?

Do you enjoy spending time with children or youth?

Consider becoming a KidStart mentor.

KidStart is a John Howard Society of North Island mentoring program that connects vulnerable kids ages 6-18 with positive adult role models. Kids and their mentors

spend over three hours per week together, having fun and celebrating success.

Sherry Stewart is a KidStart mentor. A self-described “early retiree with lots of time and energy,” Stewart was looking for a way to volunteer.

“I’m one of those people who believe life’s got to be about more than just yourself. I was seeking a volunteer position that I would look forward to doing,” Stewart said.

Stewart enjoys relating to others. As a mom, she found herself informally mentoring several kids over the years. A year ago she discovered the KidStart program and

was matched with a 10-year-old girl.

“We have a lot of fun together. We like to go to coffee shops, pet stores, and the beach, and we planted up a container at the garden centre. She’s very social and loves to chat with people,” said Stewart.

KidStart mentors involve children and youth in recreational activities that build self-confi dence. Stewart makes a point of observing positive qualities in her mentee and mentioning them to her.

Robin Lloyd wanted to make a difference in kids’ lives. He fi gured being a KidStart mentor would be a good way to do it.

Lloyd was matched with a nine-year-old boy just under one year ago.

“He told me that his eight-year-old brother would enjoy KidStart too, so I became a mentor to him as well,” Lloyd said.

Lloyd enjoyed mentoring the two boys so much he asked Comox Valley KidStart Coordinator Wendy Thurlborn if there was another boy needing a mentor. Soon he was matched with a third boy who is nine years old.

Quality one-to-one time for Lloyd and his mentees can include playing squash, hiking, swimming, feeding the birds, and making campfi res on the

beach.“It takes some of

my time, but I enjoy it. I look forward to the activities. It’s good exercise for me too!” Robin said.

As well, Lloyd’s desire to make a difference seems to be paying off.

“Their parents report that since the boys have been in KidStart, they are

getting better marks in school and fi nding it easier to make friends.”

KidStart welcomes community contributions. If you have three or more hours a week to spare and would like to volunteer, consider becoming a KidStart mentor. If you’d like to make a donation or can provide a discount on recreational

activities, get in touch. Interested in

signing up as a regular supporter? Ask us about the KidStart Champion Sponsorship Program.

To fi nd out more, call JHSNI at 250-286-0611 in Campbell River or 250-898-4842 in Courtenay. Visit thems online at www.jhsni.bc.ca/volunteer.html

Campbell River Fishing Guides Association member Laurel Gareau is seen above helping out with their yearly chinook net pen project. According to their chairman, Harry MacDonald, approximately 240,000 baby chinook salmon arrived by truck from the Quinsam Hatchery. These small salmon are fl ushed through 300 feet of fl exible pipe from the truck to the guides’ net pen which is located on “H” dock at the Discovery Harbour Marina. They will be fed twice a day by volunteers for about three weeks and then released. This group has been doing this for many years now with the hopes that some of them will return as mature adults and create better Chinook fi shing in our local area for the recreational anglers. Those that do not get caught by the commercial fl eet and anglers will of course make their way up the Campbell and Quinsam rivers to spawn. MacDonald thanked the Quinsam Hatchery workers, volunteers and Way West Water Taxi for the use of their quad.
