The Economic Development Commission of Floridas Space Coast will honor the top educator who has planted the seeds of successful business management in the minds of future entrepreneurs, from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23 at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complexs new Shuttle Atlantis Exhibit.

The Thomas E. Gamble Excellence in Education for Economic Development award is named for the former president of Brevard Community College, since renamed Eastern Florida State College, who died unexpectedly of cancer in 2006 after seven years on the job. The college has always been a beacon for business and community development, and many of its business and entrepreneurial programs were planned, launched or expanded on Gambles watch.

EFSC was awarded a $1.54 million federal grant Sept. 19 that will be used to help launch its three new bachelors degree programs in information technologies next year. The money comes from $474.5 million in funds to colleges and universities nationwide in a U.S. Department of Labor effort to develop and expand innovative training programs in growing industries and strengthen partnerships with employers.

Education and economic development go hand-in-hand, and Tom Gamble understood that, said EDC president Lynda Weatherman. More importantly, he allowed that notion to guide some of the ground-breaking program development he undertook at the institution now known as Eastern Florida State College.

    Pat Fuller, Ed.D., of Suntree

is one of the nominees. The long-time business and economics professor was tapped to develop and head up the Business Entrepreneurship Program with business philanthropist Bernie Simpkins from 2008 to 2009. Out of the gate, the program won the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship out of 800 programs in the country.

It is the job of schools to prepare students to enter the workforce, said Fuller, himself an entrepreneur as a former magazine publisher. What better way to prepare them than to teach them every possible aspect and scenario of business ownership as an entrepreneur.

During the past few years of economic recession, many students launched their own businesses because they could not find a post in todays job market, Fuller said. He and Simpkins work to inspire students and community members alike through the programs speaker series featuring successful entrepreneurs, among them local business superstar Carol Craig of Craig Technologies, S. Truett Cathy of fast-food giant Chick-fil-A, restaurateur and legendary Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula and the light-hearted cookie king Wally Amos of Famous Amos.

They turned a negative into a positive and, instead of taking a job, they found themselves in a position to create jobs for others, Fuller said, noting that more than 80 percent of the countrys employers are small businesses and calling them the backbone of the U.S. economy.

Information Fuller supplied from the entrepreneur program gave EFSC an edge

in winning the Department of Labor grant, according to grant development staff.

Launching and expanding local business is essential, Weatherman said. While we put a lot of effort into attracting new businesses to the Space Coast, our work in strengthening and fostering local businesses is also a vital, if less publicized, part of (the EDCs) mission. In addition to learning the identity of the winning educator first hand, the annual meeting will be an opportunity to network with 300 top decision makers from across Brevard County and get an up close and private experience of the Shuttle Atlantis Exhibit, Weatherman said.

For more information or to register by Oct. 18 at a cost of $55 per person, or $60 afterward, go to SpaceCoastEDC.org and click on EDC Events, or call 321-638-2000. Seating is limited and a sellout is expected. VV

Holiday parade a sign of Viera events to comeBY LINDA WIggINS

Viera residents may already have noticed a growing number of signature events in the works for their town, and towns near and far will know of them soon. The biggest on the horizon by far is the Nov. 30 Light Up Viera Parade and Holiday Pops Concert. It is timed for the Thanksgiving peak holiday shopping weekend, set for the Saturday after Black Friday.

The efforts are the sole focus of a new marketing executive under contract by the Viera Company, the arm of A. Duda & Sons that is turning the former farmland of the areas founding fathers into new communities within the town.

This is purely a marketing effort. We have 14,000 acres still to develop and we want people to experience everything Viera has to offer, said Joane Dowd, whose official position is event architect. She is the former CEO and owner of a marketing and promotion company that included A. Duda & Sons and their subsidiaries as clients, along with major companies worldwide.

Dowds events serve a two-prong purpose. The main goal is to market the town of Viera, with its focus on lifestyle amenities and close-knit community feel, to consumers in other parts of the county, region and country. We want to bring people from the outside to experience Viera, Dowd said. The events are a marketing tool that benefits everybody.

Thus, the second aspect of the signature events campaign is to have more opportunities for residents to have fun together.

Word of mouth is the best form of advertising, Dowd added.

The Viera Fall Festival & Oktoberfest will span Friday through Sunday, Oct. 25 to 27 and include an authentic German Hoffbrauhaus tent and music, along with arts and crafts, pumpkin carving, Halloween costume contest, hayrides and carnival rides of a large fall festival.

The holiday parade is expected to bring in thousands of visitors to line the route from Breslay Avenue around Tavistock

VIERA VOICE Linda WigginsBefore a large backdrop of the town center oak tree at holiday time, event architect Joane Dowd shows Audrey, Judy and Simon Diaz how to use special 3-D glasses that will be used to view the Light Up Viera Parade.

VIERA VOICE PhotoProfessional illuminated floats will be featured, as well as hand-made floats and decorated cars.

Drive, along Viera Boulevard and down Stadium Parkway.Santa and his reindeer will invite parade watchers to tag along and enter Space Coast Stadium for a pops concert by the full Brevard Symphony Orchestra, performing on a custom-built, covered stage.

Teams of 25 persons each will work the Wickham Road and Fiske Bolulevard exits off I-95, handing out maps that tell people where to park along the route and sending participants to float staging areas. Calvary Chapel of Viera is a major sponsor and will assign 200 volunteers to work

the parade and cancel its 5:30 p.m. evening service to provide parking.

Companies can sponsor a float for $2,500 that will include lighting, their corporate signage and banners, choice of float, delivery to the staging area, a professional driver, all insurance needed and 40 wristbands for VIP seating at the concert. Participation options are available at Viera.com/Light up Viera; click Participation Application for details. All parade attendees will be able to come to the Viera Discovery Center the entire month of November to

pick up their free Holoplex 3-D glasses. The lenses are designed to enhance colors, producing tiny twinkling reindeer that dance around the parades points of light.Dowd, who has lived and worked in Spain, the United Arab Emirates and other spots across the globe, has relocated from her Orlando-area home to Brevard.

Im very excited about all the possibilities, and Im enjoying everyone here, Dowd said. Ill be working hard so everyone looks to Viera for great events.

For more information on events, call 321-255-4500, ext. 4880. VV

Many people think firefighters and paramedics face the greatest danger tackling burning buildings to rescue endangered victims, but theyd be wrong. The thing that sends the biggest chills down spines and adrenaline through the veins of Brevard Countys domestic warriors?: Rescues on Interstate 95, according to Brevard County Fire Rescue Station 47s Sgt. Pam Rudnicki.

The East Viera team is frequently dispatched to I-95 because of its proximity to the interstate, Murrell Road

just 1/10 of a mile east of the Wickham Road exit, the station just a stones throw north of Wickham on the east side of the street. You have to position yourself on one shoulder or the other of the busy interstate. You get one shot at it because there will be no reverse with the big unit. Cars are whizzing by, and then they slow down, often to take a look at what is going on, Rudnicki said. This causes secondary accidents, frequently right before our eyes. Our team is at great risk.

Rudnicki and others from Station 47 weigh in on the toughest, scariest parts of the job that start once they get the call.

To start with, note the fact that their uniforms are so dark blue they appear black. Add the Florida sun and humidity to the fire and smoke of their frequent foe, and youve got a recipe for heat stroke, or at least extreme discomfort.

How do firefighters stay cool in the Florida heat?

It doesnt happen. Once you give up on the idea, its not too bad, said Station 47s Steve Racca.

VIERA VOICE Linda WigginsBCFR Lt. Pam Rudnicki performs a high-elevation rescue that requires inverting upside down from above before attaching a safety harness to a victim, then carrying the victim down once right side up.

VIERA VOICE Linda WigginsThe Jaws of Life can get heavy after hoisting the heavy tool for

long periods of time required for an extraction of a victim from a vehicle

crash, according to Viera BCFR Station 47 rookie Justin Foster.

High elevation rescues will become more frequent with the addition of high-rise buildings on the Viera/Suntree horizon, from office towers in Suntree to the Viera Hospital, and more tall medical plazas to follow.

A 100-foot ladder truck will be added to Station 80 in Suntree by the end of the year. Station 48 hosts a 75-foot ladder truck. All three stations must respond as needed to beachside rescues involving elevated-bucket trucks, and

Moms lean in to soldier on

    BY LINDA WIggINS

There is always one more thing to do, one more thing that comes between tending to children with special needs and the calm it takes to regain sanity.

So say a handful of moms who carve out precious time to meet faithfully at a local Viera restaurant for breakfast each Thursday to share joys, sorrows, information, resources and above all, hope.

Its a chance to get together and have some me time, said Sandy Reid, who along with mom Arwyn Holmes coincidentally pulls double duty as official helpers for others in their shoes. They are members of a resource team at Space Coast Early Steps Childrens Medical Services, a nonprofit provider of services for young children with special needs on behalf of the Florida Department of Health.

Some of the moms have adopted children with known birth challenges such as fetal alcohol syndrome or maternal drug addiction, most are within the exploding mushroom

cloud of autism spectrum disorder, others meet the challenges that come with developmental delays, and nearly all deal with the learning disabilities and behavioral disorders that may accompany their childrens special needs.

The moms agreed on mantra at a recent breakfast: When you are a mom, especially when you are a working mom, its tough to get the time to be by yourself or with friends to unwind from the tension of raising a family in todays world. But when you have one or more children with special needs, its practically unheard of.

So much more of your time and energy, your emotions, is spent on caring for your child or improving your skills or their skills at coping, Holmes added. There is one thing that sets this me time apart from the prospect of say as unattainable as it may be a manicure and pedicure day at the spa.

This is a time we can all look forward to, block off our busy schedule for, because not only are we bonding over a shared challenge in our lives, but we can also feel

like we are doing something productive to learn more about how to address our childrens needs so we dont have to feel guilty about doing it, Reid said, adding emphasis on that vital last aspect.

They uncover shared experiences that could one day go down in the annals of discovery toward prevention or cure, such as the high incidence among their children of the common four: asthma, allergies, eczema and ADHD, the increasingly common attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder that is a challenge to fitting in at school or a future workplace, or forming positive relationships overall.

After gives me hope, the next most common term the moms gave for the groups effect is lifesaver.

I live for this, Pat Jarrell Shortt said, slowly shaking her head back and forth in earnest. I really do.

While the Viera moms group is not officially open to the public, for a special invitation, for suggestions on how to form one or for any other resource, call Reid at 321-409-2136, ext. 209, or go to cms-kids.com. VV

Family Promise of Brevard will host its second annual golf scramble at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 at Indian River Colony Club in Viera. The success of the event is critical with this months launch of the program, according to executive director Tara Pagliarini.

Family Promise is a network of congregations that host up to four homeless families for one week each quarter. The families sleep in temporary dorms in church facilities. During the day, their children attend schools and adults look for work and

improve life skills toward independence at a day center at Grace Fellowship Church in Rockledge.

This is the time of the greatest need for funds because we now have our doors open and are serving families, she added.

Three of 13 host churches are in the Viera/Suntree area, with another three as support churches contributing funds and volunteers to the three churches: Suntree United Methodist, Faith Viera Lutheran and Advent Lutheran.

In its 10th year as a member of the General Florida Federation of Womens Clubs, the Viera Womans Club membership continues to grow.

According to VWC president Karen Terry, Last year, we had about 60 members. Now, we have 86, with eight new applicants, Terry said.

Members of the community service organization volunteered more than 10,000 hours to a variety of projects in 2012.

I tell our members to choose or renew their passions, learn new things and have fun doing it, Terry said. We have a lot of fun. Socializing is a big part, but weve all made new friends and have discovered diversity in different projects we can work with. Having been a teacher for 30 years, education is near and dear to my heart, but I am also very fond of the Canine Companions project.

Other VWC projects target Brevard Zoo, conservation efforts, Hacienda Girls Ranch, Devereux Therapeutic Group Home, The Haven for Children, Operation Smile, Brevard Schools Foundation, the Childrens Hunger Project and projects for veterans.

We recently helped set up a library in Viera Manor, the assisted living facility for veterans, Terry said.

The Womans Club continues to secure book and magazine donations for this ongoing project.

The club also works with a local elementary school to maintain a vegetable garden and with other organizations to recycle eyeglasses, pop tops and printer cartridges, in

addition to constructing oyster mats and keeping the median on Murrell Rd. litter-free. Musically-inclined members formed the Viera Singers and visit nursing homes. The club takes special pride in its scholarship program for Viera High School seniors and members of the Viera Womans Club Juniorettes.

The club sponsors community events throughout the year to help fund their projects. The next event will be a Bunco party at Heritage Isle Oct. 30, but the clubs signature event, the Snow Ball, will take place on at 5 p.m. Dec. 8 at Holiday Inn Viera. Tickets for this dinner/dance are $40 per person and all proceeds will benefit the many charities sponsored by Viera Womans Club. Last years Snow Ball generated more than $12,000. This years event includes the Bling Auction, where attendees may purchase a special jewelry box and hope to find an emerald and diamond ring or other trinkets inside.

For more information about joining Viera Womans Club, or to make a donation or to purchase tickets, call 321-751-6984 or visit gfwcvierawomansclub.com. VV

Anyone who has taken a trip to Disney World knows the cost for a family of four can surge into the multiple hundreds of dollars.

Suntree United Methodist Church will dangle a four-person Park Hopper package valued at $516 to entice shoppers to its indoor 26th annual Christmas Bazaar from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov 2.

Part of our mission is to help families in our community, and this will allow a family to bond over an activity that will make lifetime memories, doing something they may see other families enjoy, but that may be out of reach for them, said SUMC member and volunteer Nancy Short, chairing the event for the third straight year.

The bazaar is also a cost-effective way to shop for the holidays, with popular stops such as the Book Nook, Unique Boutique, Attic Treasures and Silent Auction. Auction selections are brand-new items and services donated by 50 local vendors that are good as gifts for others, or for ones own family to enjoy restaurants and entertainment, often at a fraction of the regular cost. The crown jewel of the event is the art and crafts

showcase, featuring 35 of the best local artists offering a variety of one-of- a-kind works.

The popular annual fest is billed as a chance to shop for a cause, Short said, with all proceeds going to charities and church missions. This year, the event will benefit a new project coming on line called Family Promise of Brevard, which will use SUMC and other churches as temporary housing for homeless families seeking independence. Church volunteers will serve meals, entertain children and

otherwise encourage family members along their path toward maturing in the ways of Christ, Short said.

Other bazaar features and fundraisers include a free car wash by the SUMC youth group, free photos with Santa Claus for use in Christmas greeting cards, barbecue luncheon at a reasonable fixed price and Kiddie Korner with cookie decorating and face painting.

For more information, call the front office of the church, located at 7400 N. Wickham Rd. in Suntree, at 321-242-2585. VV

What more should be done to keep the Nationals at Space Coast Stadium?

    Photos by Bob Parente

Emily MaccaroneIts a two-way street. The Nationals

have to embrace the Brevard community, do more for us. We, on the other hand, have to remember that we have to support them. We need to remember that we have

baseball stadium that offers our all all-American pastime cheaper than

going to the movies on a Friday night.

    John Leep

First, I would have them increase the number and types of family

nights. Also, the parking needs to be fixed. That field gets everything

so dirty. The last thing is more marketing/advertising to include

    the Orlando area.

Shawn RayCoach and General Manager of

the Space Coast HurricanesAs with any sport, you need to get butts in seats. The Nationals need

to have more community involvement so they can get more local support for better

    attendance.

    yourVoiceRobert Salazar

To keep the Nationals here in Brevard, fans need to go to the

games in full force and show the team and organization that we are 100 percent behind them.

Mellissa DominguesTo keep the Nationals here, we have to promote them more, like put up a sign for the stadium or a billboard on I-95. They also need to increase their exposure, other than the bad press

they are receiving now, so more people will go to the games.

Pedro Mendoza has seen a lot of wildlife over the past 26 years while working the sod flats at the Duda ranch west of Viera.

Hes about to see a lot more.Ranch operations have

begun letting grasses mature at the perimeters of the fields and in areas where sandhill

cranes and other rare objects of ornithology are spotted nesting.

There is a lot of wildlife to begin with, said Mendoza, superintendent of the 900-acre sod farm. Many varieties of grasses grow in the fields and are sold to builders and others with the need for mass quantities of sod. The most popular is the hardy St. Augustine that surrounds many Florida homes, businesses and public facilities.

Leaving areas to grow tall attracts more wildlife of all kinds, both the foraging kinds and the soaring birds that everyone loves to see.

Bald eagles float above the fields, while the even more elusive crested caracara work the grasses below.

All species have a place to call their own on the farm, which acts as an open space buffer between residential communities and the permanent ranching operations and preserves that protect the watershed into the St. Johns River. The waterway

is the main source of water for Brevard County.

According to sod farm manager Chris Leffler, the move is more than just a nice way of doing business. It is a means to an end.

It is in everyones interest that we work to protect the environment because we need it to be healthy for ourselves, Leffler said.

The welcome mat for wildlife is congruent with the operations farther to the west, at the end of Wickham Road. Hundreds of acres of lakes, preserved wetlands and buffer areas give treated water and runoff a place to process, filter and renew before making its way to the rivers and underground aquifers. The area, now known as the Viera Wetlands, has become an attraction to resident and migratory birds of a growing number of species. The flora and fauna feed each other and the result is a better habitat for humanity, Leffler said.

We take care of them, they take care of us. VV

Some games are simply more special than others, and not just because of what is at stake for the winner and loser.

The Viera High School volleyball team will host Space Coast at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10 in the seventh annual Pink Game. Proceeds will help support breast cancer research.

In addition to ticket sales, there will be concessions that will feature pink items such

as cookies, lemonade and cupcakes among other things. There will also be a Drawing for Chance, a serve-a-thon and prize giveaways, including gift baskets, dinner gift certificates and an iPad mini.

Donations from the game will be made to Dig Pink, a national foundation for high school volleyball teams across the country to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research. So far, the Hawks have raised more

    than $20,000.This years game, which

takes place during spirit week at VHS, will have special meaning for Viera coach Sarah Spinner and her father, Robert Spinner, who is principal at Space Coast.

The Pink Game is very special to our community, administration, students and me personally, especially this year with my Aunt Judy (Lachenbacher) passing in January, Sarah Spinner said. VV

It may be an old saying, but when it comes to the Holy Trinity boys cross country team, it certainly seems to hold true.

We didnt rebuild, Tigers coach Doug Butler said. We reloaded.

While only three runners returned from last years team, which won its second straight Class 1A state championship, Holy Trinity boasts a roster that features three of the top four ranked freshmen in the state among all classes.

The Holy Trinity girls, meanwhile, has a two-time champion of its own in junior Julie Wollrath, who will be going for her third consecutive individual Class 1 championship. On top of that, the girls are ranked second in the state and will be looking to overtake last years top team, Oak Hall.

Our team is really good this year and I think we have a chance at winning state, Wollrath said. The Tigers state title hopes have been bolstered

by the return of Shelby and Sydney Smith, who ran for Holy Trinity as seventh graders and are now back after spending two years in Michigan.

Melia Storum, a junior transfer from Cocoa Beach, should also have a big impact, along with freshman Samantha Folio and seventh-grader Marie Groppel.

This potentially could be the best girls team Ive ever had, Butler said. Were really, really strong this year. The problem is Oak Hall has the best team theyve ever had, too.

Wollrath, meanwhile, admits winning a third straight state title is on her mind, but she also knows shes going to have to earn it.

I feel like I always have a lot of competition, she said. There are always a couple of girls I know that are really good and Ill have to work hard to beat.

Andrew Cacciatore, Holy Trinitys No. 1 boys runner this season, is the No. 2

ranked junior in the state in all classes (No. 1 in Class 1A) and would like to follow in the footsteps of last years top runner, Alex Brown, who won the individual as well as team championship.

Trevor Kattenberg is the top-ranked freshman in the state, while his twin brother, Egan, is ranked No. 3 in the state among ninth graders. Michael Wilson is ranked No. 4. Sophomore Daniel Cronin, meanwhile, has been running well and should make the Tigers even better.

The Tigers are certainly much younger than last years team, which featured four seniors, but there is no doubt where the bar is set for the states top-ranked program.

I think theres a lot of motivation, Cacciatore said. We have three returners this year from last years state championship team. We know what its like to win state and well push the other guys. VV

The Viera High boys and girls golf teams have a few things in common this season: Theyre both blessed with deep, talented rosters and theyve both got legitimate shots to contend for the Class 3A state championship.

We have high expectations, said Viera girls No. 1 player Michelle Hawkins.

As if girls coach Greg Fords team wasnt deep enough, the Hawks strength has been augmented by the arrival of Hawkins (from Thailand) and No. 2 player Taylor Rajeski, who transferred to Viera after playing for state champion Lake Mary last season.

Not only have they already formed a strong friendship, but Hawkins and Rajeski have made a seamless transition into the Hawks program.

I love it, Rajeski said. The team is very loving and the coach is awesome. I love the coach. Were all very hard

working. Thats what makes it work.

Joining Hawkins and Rajeski on Vieras talented roster are freshman Sam Brimhall, senior Sam Dahl, junior Kaycee Gray, sophomore Katie Arnott, sophomore Katie Goodman and senior Carli Ford.

Ford believes Viera, Dr. Phillips and Venice will all be top contenders for the state title this year.

I think well have a shot, but again, anything can happen, Ford said. Well give it our best.

Vieras boys, meanwhile, have an 18 team roster full of players capable of shooting under 80. That can make for some competitive practices.

My practices might be more stressful than the matches, coach Paul Bentley said. These kids are trying to fight for their position, trying to fight to get into the match.

Three-year veteran Alex Liles is at the top of the ladder and can drive the ball well

over 300 yards. The Hawks have also been strengthened by the addition of junior Nico Gagliardi, a transfer from Titusville. Sophomore Ryan Rozic and freshman Tyler Greek are blossoming into top flight players.

The remainder of the lineup can vary with the top contenders consisting of sophomore Mitchell Albright, senior Kevin Keller, sophomore Tyler Solnay or sophomore Kyle Desceno.

We have high expectations, Bentley said. We expect to win the Cape Coast Conference tournament and we expect to give Vero Beach a run for their money at the district (tournament).

If the Hawks can get hot at the right time, Bentley believes anything is possible with this team.

I feel like if we play our best golf, we can win everything, he said. VV

and coaches and that receiving the award was a big moment for the school.I think it speaks to the volume of where we were last year, Hickey said. We won the all-sports trophy,

and then to come back and win something like that, demonstrates that youre not only winning on the field, but youre winning with good character and good sportsmanship.

Its all a big package that is good for us.

Needless to say, this is kind of award the Hawks would like to see become a yearly tradition. VV

The odds of Holy Trinity reaching its first state golf tournament would certainly appear to be stacked in the Tigers favor. Not only does the boys team feature three players senior Kerry Sweeney, senior Matt Allison and eighth-grader Calvin Sierotacapable of shooting par for 18 holes, but both the district and regional tournaments will be held at Suntree Country Club, Holy Trinitys home course. That makes a difference of us moving on, Allison said. The Tigers would have likely made it to the Class 1A state tournament last year were it not for one troublesome hole at the regionals, where the team was a combined 9-over par. That kind of trouble is less likely to happen on Holy Trinitys home course. In fact, Tigers coach Ron Benfield estimates being on familiar territory could mean a two-stroke difference for his players, who are hoping to have a team score of 300 come regionals (thats an average of 75 for the top four players over 18 holes). In addition to Sweeney, Allison and Sierota, the Tigers are also expecting big things from senior Trey Ville and sophomore Mitchell Kara this season.Sweeney, who won the regional tournament last year,

is eager to take another crack at the state finals.I want a ring this time, he said. While the boys team has a trip to the state tournament on its mind, the girls team is also looking forward to a strong season that should see the Tigers competing for the district title against the likes of Edgewood, Melbourne Central Catholic and West Shore. The girls are led by two seniors, Mary Lewis and
