The VEF is collaborating with New Life Christian Church, a VEF church plant, along with Passion4Planting to plant an ethnically diverse church in the Northwest neighborhood of Washington, DC. The goal of this ethnic project is to reach primarily second generation Latinos. Second generation Latinos (known as 2.0s) were typically born in the States to parents who immigrated from Spanish speaking countries in Central and South America. An Urban Institute study of the District of Columbia revealed that neighborhoods with significant Latino populations are mostly clustered in the Columbia Heights area of the District. Demographics indicate that well over one third of the population in this region are of Latino descent. Prior to Restore Church’s launch just three years ago there was no presence of the Christian Church and Church of Christ inside the Capital Beltway. This new ethnic project will give us our second and counting! Additional funding partners are being gathered to help fully resource the project. Ethnic ICOM Project Announced for Columbia Heights in Washington, DC The VEF is happy to announce the ICOM church plant to be based in Washington DC in the Columbia Heights area, near the National Zoo.

A recent VEF church plant, Restore Christian Church in Silver Spring, launched in October 2012 and is just a couple of subway stops north on the Red Line. Prior to Restore Church’s launch just three years ago there

was no presence of the Christian Church and Church of Christ inside the

Capital Beltway. This new ethnic project will give us our second and counting! Additional funding partners are being gathered to help fully resource the project.

Lead Planter, Joel Pazmino, was born and raised in Guayaquil,

Ecuador. Joel’s father left his job in the banking field to plant a church

there when Joel was 17 years old. Later, Joel’s father came to the U.S. to plant another church for Spanish speaking “Latino 1.0s” in the Baltimore area.

Joel and his wife, Meghan, already reside in Columbia Heights. He will commute to New

Life Christian Church in Chantilly, VA over the next year as part of his residency with Passion4Planting and a cohort of four other church planters preparing to plant new churches throughout the region. Meghan, a teacher, will be teaching this Fall at Ross Elementary School, just four blocks from DuPont Circle in Washington, DC.

Joel recently served as Director of Spiritual Formation and Community Life at Centerpoint Church in Annapolis, MD where he and Meghan met. Joel holds a B.S. in International Business from Strayer University and completed coursework for his M.Div. from Bethel Seminary. Joel and

Register Your Entire Church for ICOM 2015 in Three Easy Steps!

COLUMBIA HEIGHTS CHURCH PLANT, CONT...

Page 2

One of the great features of ICOM coming to Richmond this Fall is their family friendly registration. It’s just $50 (individual registration is usually $25/person).

Even better, a church can pre-register their ENTIRE CHURCH for a low fee based on their average Sunday at-tendance.

Here’s how to do it in 3 easy steps:

1) Go online to www.theicom.com and click on the “Regis-ter” icon.

2) Choose the “Church-Wide Registration” option, enter your church’s information, and pay.

3) You will receive an e-mail confirmation that contains a link for you to share with your congregation so they can enter their own badge information before the conference. (Individuals from your church will still need to register individually using your church’s special code provided in the link.)

Pricing is pretty simple: just $150 for churches under 100; $250 for churches between 100 and 250, and so on. Amounts are listed on the church-wide registration page.

Note: The SICOM Teen Convention has a separate registra-tion with a fee of $40 per teen to help cover the expense of their hands-on ministry experience led by the Engage Team from CIY.

We hope to see you and a great number of your church members at ICOM in Richmond October 29 - Nov. 1!

Meghan successfully completed a Church Planter Assessment Center in November, 2014. For the past 18 months, Joel has been a participant in the DC church planter’s coaching group led by Brett Andrews, the lead guy at New Life Christian Church.

Joel loves to run. He is naturally a huge soccer fan, supporting F.C. Barcelona and more locally, DC United. He’s also an avid Baltimore Ravens fan. Meghan graduated from the University of Maryland and is a big Terrapins fan. She loves cooking, baking and gardening, They have a three-year old goldfish called “The Captain” who never stops eating.

To support Joel and Meghan as they prepare to plant a church in the heart of DC, e-mail them at [email protected]. You can also like their Facebook page and follow their progress at:

COLLeGE MINISTRIES OF Virginia: Where are your students headed?

Page 3

Bob Russell, longtime senior minister at Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, KY, was invited to speak at Christian Student Fellowship at the University of Kentucky. After his experience at CSF (UK), Bob wrote the following in his March 25, 2012 blog:

“My heart is often grieved over what happens to church kids when they go off to state universities. We lose so many to the secular worldview and the carnal temptations that are ever-present on campus. But that brief experience at CSF illustrated for me the importance of campus ministries. The church needs to have a vibrant presence on campus to constantly remind our kids that it’s vitally important they understand and follow God’s will during the college years because so many life-altering decisions are made during that time.”

Bob Russell perfectly illustrates the need for campus ministries on every college and university campus. College Ministries of Virginia aims to plant and cultivate vibrant campus ministries throughout the commonwealth of Virginia. Ten years ago, there was only one independent Christian Church/Church of Christ campus ministry in Virginia, Christ’s Church at Virginia Tech (led by Steve Wilkin). Today we have three (soon to be four) campus ministries in our commonwealth.

Josh Smith, Executive Director

Landon Elliott, VCU Kristina Cavanaugh, VCU

Chris McCarthy, ODU

Justin May, JMU

College Ministries of Virginia (CMOV) is excited to announce the hiring of Chris McCarthy to their staff as the Lead Campus Minister at Old Dominion University. Chris replaces Dave Van Buskirk, who served with them for four years and has moved to First Christian Church in Chester, WV as the Senior Minister. Chris, a Mid Atlantic Christian University (MACU) grad, comes CMOV after serving at MACU, Northampton Church of Christ.

Along with Chris, CMOV is also thrilled to share that they have hired Justin May to plant a new campus ministry at James Madison University in the Fall of 2015. Justin is a Johnson University grad who was serving at Chilhowie Christian Church. They can’t wait to see what God is going to do through these men to impact the lives of students on their respective campuses.

They are joining the ministry of Christian Student Fellowship at VCU, led by Landon Elliott and Kristina Cavanaugh. CSF has existed on Virginia Commonwealth University’s campus for the past 11 years and has many established ministries and small groups.

If you know of a student (current or new) at one of the campuses where CMOV has ministries (JMU, ODU, VCU or VT), please e-mail Josh Smith, executive campus minister at [email protected] with name(s) and any contact info (cell, e-mail, fb). The campus minister at that location will make contact with those students to invite them to be part of their faith community.

LOCAL YOUTH CONFERENCE welcomes renowned worship leaderJohn Mark McMillan, writer of “How He Loves” and “Future/Past,” joins SICOM students and college students attending ICOM for one amazing show, Saturday night, October 31st.

Following the Saturday night main sessions for ICOM & SICOM, John Mark will be performing a full show with his band! You won’t want to miss this amazing show! Admission is covered with SICOM registration, and a limited number of free passes will be available to college students at the ICOM information desk during conference.

Look for full SICOM registration packets coming to your church in the next few weeks!

For the first time the VEF is hosting an event specifically to challenge, equip and encourage our youth lead-ers in the Virginia region! The many challenges of youth ministry are well known: tight budgets, high expecta-tions, and a changing culture often at odds with the values of young dis-ciples. It’s easy to get overwhelmed leading in this kind of environment.

However, we know how crucial these formative years are for establishing and developing your teenagers’ life-long faith. That’s why the VEF creat-ed this one-day annual seminar, “The Art of Youth Ministry,” where your youth staff will be strengthened and encouraged while learning and fel-lowshipping with other youth leaders.

Nationally-known youth speaker Mark DeVries, President of Ministry Architects and author of the book Sustainable Youth Ministry, will lead.

The Art of Youth Ministry will take place on Tuesday, January 12th from 9:30am-3:30pm at Fairmount Christian Church in Mechanicsville, VA. The $35 registration covers the cost of the seminar, materials, and lunch. Your youth leaders won’t want to miss this inaugural event just for them! It’s an easy way for your church to invest in your most important leaders.

Golf Outing proceeds to benefit Memorial scholarshipThe proceeds of the Harry E. Tucker Golf Outing go to benefit the Marion Harris Young Leaders Scholarship. Your generosity helps us continue to find and develop our future church leaders.

Marion Harris was the Director of the VEF for nearly 20 years (from 1987 until 2004). He was loved across the Commonwealth for his winsome humor and warm spirit, a friend of preachers. Marion was known to ‘take a risk’ on young leaders he believed in, their biggest advocate and cheerleader.

The Marion Harris Young Leaders Scholarship was created in Marion’s memory to help VEF church plants hire an intern who shows great promise as a future leader for Virginia’s churches. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of demonstrated leadership, character and academics.

Fusion Groups: Following Jesus’ Example In LeadershipA new wind is blowing across the VEF landscape these days - the Fusion Group wind. This fall as many as 200 ministers will begin gathering monthly in 30 Fusion Groups, and we will continue to start new groups month-ly. Like Jesus’ early peer learning community, these groups will have three over-riding goals: 1) To offer prac-tical peer learning, 2) To provide authentic pastoral care to each other, 3) To produce prayer-empowered leaders.

Reggie McNeal, in his book Revolution in Leadership, describes a key element in Jesus’ strategy to develop and sustain leaders. He says, “With the whole world to save, Jesus decided to create a learning community.” While Jesus ministered to thousands, he gathered a small group around him in the first Christian peer learning community.

Could it be that Jesus knew something about leaders that we’ve missed today? And could it be that Satan knows something about leaders that he desperately wants us to overlook?

Growing up in a solid church under the leadership of a very capable minister was a blessing. But I must admit I developed a very skewed view of ministers. To me, min-isters were people with inexhaustible energy, capable of answering every question, ready to meet any challenge and solve any problem. While I never actually saw any ministers change from their street clothes into Super-Man outfits, in my mind as a little boy I was quite sure they could when needed.

But after almost 40 years in ministry and after spending a

life-time rubbing shoulders with ministers, can I tell you a secret, just between you and me? Your minister may not want you to know this secret and I’m certain Satan doesn’t want you to hear it, but here it is: Ministers are only people, just like you! There! The secret’s out. Min-isters don’t have all the answers, they are often lonely and hurting, and they regularly struggle under the load of trying to pursue Kingdom growth in their God-given context and calling.

If you are in ministry and would like to become part of a Fusion Group, contact me at [email protected]. Please join me in praying regularly for your church leaders and encour-age them to join a Fusion Group soon.

The VEF receives a rebate from your Amazon purchases when you enter the Amazon homepage through the VEF’s link. Here’s how:

• Navigate to our website, www.vef.cc

It’s that simple. Our rebate percentage actually grows as the number of people using it grows. We currently receive about $500 each year in rebates. We’d love to see that number in the $1000’s.
