Earl and Ruth Anne Haubner felt called to a new ministry in the Amazon Region of Brazil in 1995. ICOM 2015: New Church in The Amazon The VEF is partnering with churches around the Commonwealth to plant 7 new churches across the globe as an outreach of the International Conference on Missions coming to Richmond next October (see the map on page 3).

The South American site, Monte Oliveira, was chosen in collaboration with Earl Haubner, of the Central Brazil Mission. Earl and his wife, Ruth Anne, celebrated their 45th year in Brazil this summer! The Haubners started the Novo Horizonte Church in March 1974. From that church, over 50 churches have been planted and an estimated 40,000 individuals baptized into Christ.

a new church in the village.”

The new ICOM church will be planted in Monte Oliveira, a village that is a 20-hour boat ride down the Amazon River from Manaus, the capital city of the region.

The Haubners were informed by a native missionary working in the region that the Monte Oliveira people are very aloof and do not like strangers visiting or even approaching their village, especially missionaries. However, a visit to the CBM medical boat by a few villagers from Monte Oliveira helped establish trust. After being treated for some of their health problems, they invited Earl and Ruth Anne to bring their medical boat to the village to assist all who live there.

During the first visit to Monte Oliveira, a 15-year old girl came on the boat with

her baby boy. He was six months old but weighed only eight pounds. The young mother could not feed her child; in fact, there was very little food for anyone in the entire village. The river was low, and there weren’t any fish for families to catch and eat. Ruth Anne made some formula for the teen mother to give the baby and taught her how to best feed the little boy. Now, after four years, he is thriving.

This village is now asking CBM to build a church for them. Funds given for the ICOM 2015 church planting vision will help start this church along with six others around the globe.

VEF to begin a Renaissance in Harrisonburg, VA in spring 2015The VEF’s next new church is set to launch in Harrisonburg on March 1st. Renaissance Church takes its name from the city’s downtown revitalization campaign that has transformed this college town into an exciting place to live and work.

Harrisonburg, home to 50,000 residents and James Madison University, has doubled in size over the past 30 years. Downtown Harrisonburg is a dramatically different place today than it was just a decade ago. Since 2004, this “Virginia Main Street Community” has become “one of the best small towns” in the United States. The excitement and momentum of the town’s renaissance are seen in the numerous awards that Harrisonburg has received in 2014: the Fastest Growing City in Virginia, the Best Place to Be a Millennial, the #7 Most Caring Small City in America, the 8th Most Exciting Place in Virginia and curiously the Top U.S. Town for Romance!

Renaissance Church is led by Jonathan Goss and the team he’s gathering to launch this new work. Jonathan is a graduate of Johnson University who comes to Virginia after serving at the Maple View Church of Christ in Bluefield, WV. and helping to start two new works during his 8 years with Harvester Christian Church in St. Charles, MO.

Jonathan and his wife, Susan, have been married for 20 years and have three great kids, Meredith (14), Caleb (12), and Jenna (8). Jonathan and Susan attended an intensive church planting assessment center in Atlanta in October and received a glowing

report from the assessment team for their readiness to plant a new church.

Renaissance is supported by a quality management team composed of Larry Veach (Chair) from New Life Christian Church in Winchester, Todd Collier from Valley Church of Christ in Harrisonburg, Todd Brown and Stacey Burkholder from Blue Ridge Church of Christ in Fishersville, David Merhle from Wentzville Christian Church (MO), and Tim Cole from the VEF who also serves as Jonathan’s coach. The VEF received a funding grant along with Project Management for this project from Passion4Planting, the national church planting ministry within New Life Christian Church, one of the VEF’s first plants in Chantilly, VA.

Forefront Church in Virginia Beach recently occupied their first building after being portable for 17 years (see article on page 6). Forefront generously donated their extra large trailer loaded with equipment to Renaissance Church. There’s no better way to re-purpose Kingdom gear.

Please watch for further updates about Renaissance in upcoming issues of the VEF Quarterly as well as on the VEF’s FaceBook page. For more information about Renaissance Church, check out www.therenchurch.com.

Your Fall Kingdom Equation $20 twice a year donations will help fund this new church. To join Kingdom Equation go to www.kingdomequation.com.

World-wide Church P lanting in 2015

Journey Christian Church opened on October 26th in New Martinsville, WV. Minister Scott Chambers has come back to his home town after many years of ministry in the Midwest.

Over the summer the VEF came alongside this project already underway by providing a management team, coaching, accounting and branding services. A modest amount of funding and equipment remaining from a previous project in West Virginia was re-directed to help them with start up expenses.

Journey launched in a renovated storefront on the main street through this river town of

6,000. Thirty-eight were in attendance on opening day, while week two saw even more guests arrive.

Please be praying for this new church and its outreach to their community. This is the first new Christian Church in the region in more than 50 years.

A PermanenT Location for Forefront

A New Venue for Venture

Forefront Christian Church in Virginia Beach, VA moved to a permanent location on September 7 after 16 years as a portable church in Virginia Beach. In those years they baptized over 1200 people. Since the move a second service has been added and attendance has grown by 38%. Plans include a third service to begin in January and an additional evening service later in 2015 along with a building expansion on their 4.5 acres in the heart of Virginia Beach.

For an in-depth look at their design process, visit www.tinyurl.com/ForefrontArticle

Rumors had flown about a new YMCA being built in Danville since Venture Christian Church signed their very first lease with the Y in April of 2012. While the rumors were true, the actual building process took much longer than anticipated (as it always does). However, on September 14th, 2014, Venture Christian Church moved into its new church home: a brand new, state-of-the-art YMCA complex on the banks of the Dan River, overlooking the growing downtown district.

Eric Hash, lead planter, moved to Danville in 2011, wholly passionate about the promise he saw just beneath the surface of the city, which was recovering from economic crisis. He immediately dug into the community, coaching soccer and jumping in to organize the city’s yearly River District Festival. Last year he was even voted Danville’s favorite preacher by the local, city-wide magazine and they put him on the cover of the “Best of Danville” issue.

This new Y is the symbol of Danville’s new growth and hope for the future, and Venture Christian Church is in the heart of the action. The Y asked the church to run a fitness-minded coffee shop, at which Y-goers can purchase healthy smoothies, energy bars, or a quick shot of caffeine. Now Eric’s wife, Kim, runs the coffeeshop on weekdays and the church can use the coffee facilities to caffeinate guests and regular attenders on Sunday mornings. It’s called the Venture Cafe, and they’ve branded it to reflect the vibe of the church: a signature bright green and dynamic V-shaped logo. (They even use the same “Land of a Thousand Hills” coffee roasters they always have, which is a ministry out of Rwanda, Africa.) It’s a great opportunity to meet people in the community and spark conversations about the church that meets there on Sunday mornings.

Page 6

Forefront’s permanent space allows them new flexibility and creativity.

Venture Cafe is a ministry space on Sunday morning and an outreach space every other day of the week.

QuarterlyA New Director, The Same DirectionWe are pleased to announce that Tim Cole was installed as the VEF’s Executive Director at the Fall meeting of the Board of Directors. Tim has served the VEF as the Director of Church Planting for the past 12 years. During that time, the VEF has helped to plant 20 new projects around the Commonwealth and beyond.

Tim and his family moved to Virginia in 1997 to help start Forefront Christian Church in Virginia Beach. For the past 9 years, Tim has also been the planter and Senior Minister of Velocity Christian Church in Richmond.

Dave Hileman continues to serve full-time with the VEF as the Associate Director. The last 11 years saw unprecedented expansion of programs and services to Virginia’s 240+ Christian Churches and Churches of Christ. Dave will continue to develop and present ideas to promote church health for effective ministry.

Tim and Dave have worked together for 17 years serving Virginia churches making this transition from one Director to the next nearly seamless. All of our staff and volunteer officers and directors continue to guide the VEF to strategically live out its stated mission, “Pursuing Kingdom Growth” throughout the Commonwealth and beyond.
