Wednesdays this fall will be some of this and some of that, some familiar and some new, but all with a single focus.

We’re calling it Sanctuary.

Pause with us. Take a breath. Slow down your week and stop by. Eat a meal, have a conversation, renew, turn off the technology, and just pause . . . reconnect with Christ. Practice His presence with us.

Sanctuary is a mid-week oasis, a reset button on life—they’re hard to come by these days. We have something for everyone in the family, a spot just for you to do what you need to connect with Christ. Everything is optional, you choose. It’s a sanctuary.

Second SessionsAdult Wednesday Evening 4-week sessions +GaPs

What is a GaP?GaPs are for everyone. We’ll come together as a group to share, listen, learn, explore and pause every fifth week. It’ll let us be in community together before we begin again with our next round of Sessions.

GaP 1.0 (Aug. 20)Reconnect with 2BC with Jason EdwardsWe’ll spend a little time together, catching up from all the summer activities and happenings. Jason will answer a few questions and share some ministry updates. We’ll give you a little better understanding of this new mid-week format and fall program plans.

Sessions 1.0(Aug. 27, Sept. 3, 10, 17)

Yoga with Kathy Benavidez Room 611In our busy lives, we sometimes overlook how important it is to find time for stillness and mindfulness. If you appreciate the “Practicing the Presence of God” moment in worship or are looking for more sabbath, this may be a good class for you. This God-centered practice is designed to strengthen us: mind, body, and spirit. We will focus on breathing and basic yoga poses. No previous yoga experience is

renewWe’ll start with a GaP!

We’ve restructured our adult offerings into the new Second Sessions. These sessions are in blocks of four-week offerings with a “GaP” (Gather and Pause) week in between, where we’ll all get together for one special session before we begin again. Here is a sneak peek at the first two GaP and Session blocks.

required. All ages, body types, and fitness levels welcome. Please join us in comfortable clothes, no jeans and, if possible, bring a yoga mat.

Psalms with Sherry McGlaughlin Room 308During this series on the Psalms, we will explore theological responses to the character of God the Psalms portray, examine our own emotional engagement with the Psalms, and practice praying the Psalms in ways that deepen, challenge, and give voice to our faith.

Parenting Kiddos with Gwen Phillips | Room 304-305This four-week session is designed for parents of young children (preschool-elementary). We’ll discuss raising children grounded in Biblical principles. We’ll share strategies for focusing on relevance and grace at each stage of your child’s journey. The goal of this session is really just to help parents take ownership of the spiritual leadership in your home. It takes a village!

Send | Remix with Mike Lassiter Room 505We’ve had an amazing summer of SEND INIATIVE trips, and we will be sharing each one this fall in what we are calling SEND | REMIX. Each team will spend a Wednesday session sharing photos,

experiences, and insights about their journeys and their encounters while on mission this summer.

Schedule: Aug. 27: Nepal Sept. 3: Thailand Sept. 10: South Dakota Sept. 17: Slovakia.

Coffee & Conversation (Weekly social session) Social Room 117For those who want to just join us for a time of fellowship and relaxing after our Second Servings meal, the Social Room will be open each week for a time just to unwind and connect with your friends and faith family here at Second Baptist Church. liberty Fall festival | September 26–28

About 25,000 people attend the Liberty Fall Festival each year. Previously we have participated by allowing our 2BC parking lot to be used for handicap parking Friday and Saturday, and we supply drivers for a 2BC Courtesy Shuttle golf cart for those needing a ride to the festival or to their vehicle. This has been extremely helpful for many people. So, this year we need drivers again in two hour slots for the shuttle Friday from 12:00–6:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.

Connections a five-week class designed for new members and those who are new to our congregation. Join Greg Duncan from 9:45–10:45 a.m. each Sunday in Room 301.

Not only will you explore more about who 2BC is as a faith community and how you as an individual can best connect, but you’ll be able to examine your own giftedness and perhaps discover new opportunities for personal growth and ministry while at Second Baptist.

Second Baptist Church

Welcome!

I’m so glad you’ve decided to take our 2BC Connections class. At Second Baptist, we believe that God has called us to live out our faith in the context of Christian community. We also believe that God has gifted each one of us for a special role within the Christian community. Our prayer is that as you move through this Connections class, you will gain greater understanding of what makes our community unique, as well as what makes your calling distinct.

Your very presence in this class is a symbol of your interest in Second Baptist Church, and that is exciting. I would love for this class to serve as our opportunity to welcome you more deeply into the life of our fellowship. Even more, I hope these weeks will serve as a vehicle for you to move more deeply into your relationship with Christ as you strive to know him more clearly, to love him more dearly, and to follow him more nearly.

Grace and Peace,

Jason EdwardsPastor

Knowing that the end of the “Catalyst year” (actually, it has been TWO years since we began) is October 31 is critically important for the full success of the Catalyst initiative.

The Catalyst journey the dedicated members of this church committed to almost two years ago has seen many accomplishments because of the selfless sacrificial giving by so many members. We have watched—or participated in—numerous successful SEND projects in the Kansas City area, in other parts of the United States, and onto other continents because of the funds committed to the Catalyst initiative. We have also seen and benefitted from needed improvements to the church facility.

Unfortunately, some of the planned activities have been put on hold because not all the pledged amounts have been fulfilled, in spite of a

robust beginning during the 4th quarter of 2012. It would be easy to assume that we have until the end of the year (December 31) to fulfill those commitments just as we do for most of the charitable contributions we make. But for the Catalyst program, the “end of the year” is October 31.

Here are some of the Catalyst initiatives “on hold”:

• Rehabbing the chapel and pre-school entrances that are leaking and need aesthetic improvements• College room renovation to accommodate an expanding student ministry by knocking out small classrooms which are now being used as storage plus the cost of painting and carpeting.• Wiring and mounting of new cameras in the Sanctuary. The cameras are already purchased but will not be usable without this feature.• Upgrading of the Sanctuary projector and screens

• New wireless microphones and assistive listening packs for the Sanctuary• Possible failure to complete the repayment of the Renovation Loan, a big item we had hoped to pay off completely by this fall.

Everything possible is being done to avoid reducing the SEND money. If that must be cut, we will have some huge deficits in student ministry trips and other outreach trips that had already been committed.

The real message in all this is that if you are one of those waiting for a time closer to the end of the year to fulfill your Catalyst commitment, please make your fulfillment early enough to allow a successful Oct. 31 conclusion of the Catalyst program. Let’s finish strong! Thank you.

12 The Loop | Fall 2014

Spending four weeks in Bridger, South Dakota with Byron and Toni Buffalo, people from the community, and church mission teams who share a commitment to the Lakota, was a joy. And meeting and understanding the hearts of those who are opposing the Keystone XL pipeline was an enriching experience.

Byron and Toni have been working hard lately. They are speaking and traveling to explain to others how intentional partnering, incorporating ongoing relationship that must constantly be maintained, has enabled them to help accomplish their vision for the Lakota people in and around the little community of Bridger. They are tired, but grateful after hosting six mission teams, representing about 80 people from eight churches, and making each team feel special and wanted. They took a real chance about eleven years ago in this more traditional isolated area of the Cheyenne River Reservation when they invited these mission teams from white churches to come and share the journey with them and the Lakota people that chose to allow the relationships.

The groups who have committed to building relationship with the people of the Bridger area all understand the importance of long-term engagement, with all the setbacks and victories along the way. These people have decided to listen first, and then act if appropriate. They are thinking creatively about long-term sustainable community development. They understand that with this type of relationship, you can be unashamedly Christian. This kind of patient relationship made room for the people in the community to ask for a Bible study and a men’s group. They understand that the alternate, quick-attempt to evangelize without any real knowledge of who you are sharing with, might have risked reopening hundred-year old wounds left when Christian zeal led over common sense and prayerful engagement.

I enjoyed the unencumbered time with people who would come to the church to visit, invite me to join them in their home, or ride with me to daily destinations. Some are still cautious and don’t totally embrace or understand

our presence each year. Some know they can count us as people who will do anything within our power and our self-imposed boundries to help, but the vast majority know they are accepted for who they are and are friendly. In the ten years we have been going to Bridger, including the month of June this year, I have personally been asked only six times for money. And when asked, it is usually to trade something for $10 or $15. It is enjoyable to preserve dignity and provide for people on the basis of our relationships.

The protest of the Keystone XL Pipeline, which potentially puts tens of thousands of grazing acres in

jeopardy, would cross the Oglala aquifer (the largest aquifer in the United States) and 30+ rivers, has been the focus of many Lakota and ranchers. While the Lakota themselves are divided about the building of the pipeline, many have resolved that no one listens to them anyway. No one listens when they talk about the sacredness of the earth and the connection of all things, when they share their deep fear that something bad will happen to this part of the country, an area so highly sacred to the Lakota people.

Even with this deep-seated fear—and to some degree resentment—toward the government and their own tribal leaders for allowing economics to drive decisions, they continually state they will protest the Lakota way, which is through prayer and education and nothing more. What a testimony that is to the personal agendas of others joining the protest.

All of this, I hope, will continue to influence my personal thinking on missions and, as Mission Pastor, inform the very best way for Second Baptist to engage people with the Jesus-life-and-story by protecting dignity and not trampling over culture or personal choice.

The final two weeks of my sabatical were used to build a new, expanded paver patio and retaining wall at our home here in Liberty. This provided some good physical exercise and thinking time and has already afforded a place for my family to eat together this summer and even enjoy the fire pit.

August 17 is the official beginning of our new year in Bible Study, missions, and music for the preschool/children’s ministry! Our theme for the new year is LIVE OUT LOUD. God has given us the gift of life that will never end. Our children’s choir introduced this thought to us back in the spring as they presented the musical, God of this City. From the song, “Live Out Loud”, the children sang: And if God’s love is burning in our hearts, we’re gonna glow. There’s just no way to keep it in. This is life we’ve been given, made to be lived out…so Live out loud!

My hope for this year is that our children will want to “wake the neighbors, get the word out, crank up the music, climb a mountain and shout. This is life we’ve been given, made to be lived out.”

On Sunday, August 17, pre-K through fifth grade will be welcomed by their new leaders in their new classrooms. At 10:15 a..m., we will all meet together in the chapel for a special time together, then end our Bible Study time back in our rooms.

The preschool classes will continue to meet the needs of our little ones as the kiddos move on through the different rooms as they grow and develop.

CHILDREN’S MISSIONS GROUPSWednesdays 6:30–7:15 p.m.(August 20 through May 3)While Sunday morning Bible Study primarily engages us in the Biblical stories of our faith, on Wednesdays during the school year, children are engaged in the do-ing and living of the Christian faith. Our focus on mis-sions education includes the active care for others and Jesus’ example of humbly serving those around us.

During Missions, children participate in hands-on activi-ties, recognize a Biblical foundation for missions, and enjoy fellowship with one another. Families are invited to eat dinner in the Social Room before missions and participate in other Wednesday evening opportunities for the whole family. (See pages 2-4 for more details.)

Comfort Drive for South DakotaSeptember 15–October 12 We will again be traveling to South Dakota in October with blankets and coats for the Lakota people. We give the comfort items to several Lakota pastors of the Dakota Association who distribute the items as needed. We have found that gently used heavier winter coats and blankets are the best.

In addition to the blankets and coats, we will also collect new athletic socks which is a request from Arlys, the Bridger Community Health Worker. Many of the people, mainly the elderly, don’t go out as much during the long stretches of cold and often run out of propane for heat and wear socks to help keep warm in their homes. Black bins will be made available at the west, south and east doors for the items you bring.

The first Saturday in October is the annual Rebuilding Together Clay County work day. This year 33 homes were chosen for fixing, repairing or upgrading. Second Baptist will again join with other churches, organizations and businesses to help accomplish the work. All skill levels and abilities are welcome for this local one day mission project.

What is Stephen Ministry?Stephen Ministry is the one-to-one lay caring ministry that takes place at 2BC. Stephen Ministry congregations equip and empower lay caregivers—called Stephen Ministers—to provide high-quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are hurting.

Who are Stephen Leaders?Stephen Leaders are the pastors, other church staff, and lay leaders who direct Stephen Ministry in the congregation. They are equipped and inspired to serve in this role at a one-week Leader’s Training Course. Stephen Leaders have gifts and skills in areas such as leadership, teaching, and organizing people—along with a heart for caring ministry.

Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ

(Galatians 6:2, NRSV).
