Our program boasts a dedicated team of attending staff and advanced practice providers, two hybrid endovascular operating rooms, dedicated vascular surgery operating rooms, an ICAVL-accredited non-invasive vascular laboratory and an IAC-accredited vein center. In addition, the integrated program is intended to produce leaders and innovators in the field of vascular disease who educate patients, train residents, direct important research, create new treatment algorithms and develop new treatment methodologies and devices designed to improve patient outcomes. Overall, the program is designed with graduated responsibility and supervision at each level of training, with the first-year fellow functioning primarily as the endovascular fellow and the second-year fellow running the inpatient vascular service and functioning primarily as the open surgery fellow. In addition to our Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program, we are proud to offer an ACGME-accredited, five year Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency Program which has been developed alongside and is fully supported by our ACGME-accredited General Surgery Residency Program. During the first three years of


the training program, trainees will be integrated into general surgery rotations which have been selected to provide the best operative experience in particular with open abdominal surgery. Residents will also spend extra time on the vascular surgery services at BIDMC, Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge Hospital, and Brockton Hospital, as well as the department’s vascular lab. Their final chief year will be spent entirely on the BIDMC vascular surgery service. Integrated vascular surgery residents will spend two years of T-32 funded research in either Basic Science or Outcomes Research between their third and fourth years of training. Our trainees are involved in the general care of vascular patients as well as the perioperative care of some of our most complex vascular patients. Our trainees develop a high level of skill in both endovascular therapeutic and open vascular surgery. Strong clinical exposure, vascular faculty dedicated to education, and carefully selected core rotations maximize the resident educational experience. Our vascular residency training at Cooper is unique in that the trainees currently spend 8 months on the cardiac surgery rotation, one that does not have cardiac fellows, where residents gain exposure to general cardiac techniques as well as participate in combined cardiac surgery-vascular


cases. Our graduates have been in the 90th percentile relative to their peers for both open and endovascular aortic, as well as carotid procedures. Our fellowship offers a rich history and perspective in the treatment of vascular disease states, a comprehensive exposure to a broad variety of complex vascular surgical conditions, and an extensive experience in both the open and endovascular management of vascular disease in urban and suburban settings. The clinical fellowship encompasses the full range of vascular disease conditions emphasizing the natural history, clinical diagnosis, medical care, interventions, and operative management to provide the most effective care of vascular patients. All graduates are expected to be proficient in the total care of the vascular patient through the rich clinical environment. Additionally, opportunity exists to participate in clinical and/or basic science research initiatives through the university. Our large faculty roster (>15) includes exemplary Emory vascular surgery graduates as well as vascular surgeons who have trained all over the United States. We boast multiple, previous program directors that have successfully led vascular surgery fellowships and integrated vascular residencies. Emory University itself gives our vascular surgery trainees access to the entire breadth of vascular surgery practices, ranging from vascular trauma to using endovascular technology that is only available to restricted trial sites like Emory. Our trainees are led and mentored by innovators in our specialty, many of whom are internationally recognized, and rotate through a diverse array of clinical settings, including university, VA, private, pediatric, and trauma hospitals.
