Academic 5+2 Fellowship Program: The overall goal of BIDMC's 5+2 Vascular Surgery Residency Program is to prepare residents to function as qualified practioners of vascular surgery at the high level of performance expected of a board-certified specialist by providing comprehensive clinical training in vascular surgery, basic science or clinical research experience for the resident, and excellent surgical and medical care. By accomplishing these goals, we hope to produce trainees who will be able to successfully pursue a career in academic surgery or enter private practice in Vascular Surgery. Overall, the program is designed with graduated responsibility and supervision at each level of training. 0+5 Residency Program: During the first four years of the BIDMC 0+5 training program, trainees will be integrated into the department’s ACGME-accredited General Surgery Residency Program. General surgery rotations are selected to provide the best operative experience in particular with open abdominal surgery. Residents will also spend extra time on the vascular surgery services at BIDMC, Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge Hospital, and Saint Vincent Hospital, as well as the department’s vascular lab. Their final chief year will be spent entirely on a vascular surgery service. Integrated vascular surgery residents will spend two years of T-32 funded research in either Basic Science or Outcomes Research between their third and fourth years of training. Academic The Vascular Surgery Fellowship Training Program is an Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) two year program and currently accepts one new resident per year (total of two residents at any one time). For over 30 years, the program has been providing trainees with a diverse and challenging clinical and surgical experience supported by innovative didactic and research opportunities. We are proud to maintain a healthy balance between open vascular surgery and endovascular therapy. This guarantees that our trainees, upon graduation, are competent open vascular surgeons. We have full access to state-of-the-art endovascular suites and have a robust endovascular practice. Due to our unique and close relationship with the sections of interventional cardiology and radiology, our trainees have the opportunity to learn technical endovascular skills not only from vascular surgeons but also from other interventionalists, thus broadening their endovascular skill-set. Since we are committed to the academic mission, we expect our trainees to participate in academic endeavors during the course of their training. At the beginning of the residency our trainees choose to pursue several clinical research projects and are expected to both present their results at vascular meetings and author several manuscripts. We believe that this experience serves our trainees extremely well regardless of whether or not they eventually choose a career in academic medicine. We have a robust multidisciplinary academic calendar which includes case conferences, journal clubs, didactic sessions on topics of controversy in vascular surgery and vascular laboratory conferences. Academic The overall goal of the Vascular Surgery training program at Cooper University Health Care is to provide a foundation for graduates of the program to develop into expert clinicians that are proficient in all aspects of the diagnosis, management, and treatment of vascular disease. These goals are fostered in an environment of progressively graded clinical, operative experience and responsibility. In doing so, the resident will ultimately exercise mature surgical judgment and operative skills which prepare him/her to provide independent care to patients with vascular disease. Our faculty is enthusiastic, committed to teaching and has over 30 years of fellowship teaching collectively. The case volume provides ample opportunity for residents to develop and master a large breadth of vascular interventions including both open and endovascular procedures. Recent graduates have been in the 90th percentile relative to their peers for both open and endovascular aortic procedures. During their training, residents have the opportunity to use devices only available through aortic and peripheral clinical trials in addition to newly FDA approved “next generation” devices such as fenestrated endografts for the treatment of complex aortic pathology.

Academic Dartmouth-Hitchcock's Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency program provides graduated, incremental training in both vascular and core surgery. Residents have the opportunity to spend an additional research year earning a master’s degree in public health at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice (TDI). We match one five-year position each year. Dartmouth-Hitchcock also offers a two-year Vascular Surgery Fellowship for residents who have completed general surgery training. The fellowship is organized so that interventional procedures, open surgery, inpatient and outpatient care, and vascular laboratory instruction are integrated throughout both years of the fellowship. In addition, fellows have one academic day per week to allow for clinical research. We match one two-year position each year. Nine board-certified vascular surgeons staff a dedicated vascular service at this 425-bed tertiary care facility. Academic Geisinger Medical Center is located in Danville in northeastern PA. The Vascular Surgery department in Danville has two dedicated endosuites. The fellows also spend two months at the Geisinger Wilkes-Barre (GWV) Medical Center where there is an additional endosuite. The Vascular Surgery department has a stable elderly population in PA which gives the fellows a broad exposure to open surgery. In addition, many complex endovascular procedures are being performed such as fenestrated EVARs and thoracic stent grafts for transections and aneurysmal disease. The Vascular surgery department has been an integral part of CREST performing many carotid stents. Geisinger has 5 helicopters which transport all major vascular emergencies to our facilities. Basic research is encouraged for interested fellow with a focus on AAA pathophysiology. Clinical research is ongoing at all times with staff and fellows. The department runs a large ICVAL accredited vascular lab and we have a vascular lab curriculum so fellows have no difficulty in passing the required RPVI exam.

Both Paradigms Offered: 5+2The Vascular Surgery Fellowship is an accredited program solely within Henry Ford Hospital offering a rich history and perspective in the treatment of vascular surgical disease states, a comprehensive exposure to a broad variety of complex vascular surgical conditions, and an extensive experience in both the open and endovascular management of vascular disease. The two-year ACGME-accredited clinical fellowship encompasses the full range of vascular disease conditions emphasizing the natural history, clinical diagnosis, endovascular options and interventions, and the operative management utilized in the treatment of patients with vascular disease. All graduates are expected to become proficient in the total care of the vascular patient and to learn and become involved with clinical research projects, thus warranting the title of vascular specialist. Academic Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Staten Island University Hospital is an ACGME accredited 2 years comprehensive training program in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. It is offered to those who have completed an ACGME approved General Surgery residency. One position is offered every year through the ERAS with a total of two fellows training at a given time. Established in 2001, Vascular Surgery fellowship provides a comprehensive exposure to patients with diseases of the arterial, venous, and lymphatic systems. Extensive exposure to complex vascular pathology at our vascular surgery program is second to none. We perform approximately, 1200 vascular cases annually. The entire faculty is fully trained, board certified, and are well recognized in the field of vascular surgery. Each fellow works closely with faculty members who review the fellow's progress and assist in meeting the fellow's career goals. The program director also meets with the fellows four times during the academic year to assess the fellow's academic progression. Due to high clinical volume, our fellows usually meet the defined category case requirement by the end of their first year or beginning of the second year. The Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency Program of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Houston Methodist is a six-year program (of which, one year is dedicated for research) designed to train vascular surgeons to provide personalized, high quality and comprehensive surgical care. This provides not only a comprehensive surgical experience, but enables residents and fellows to experience all types of vascular surgery practice. Six vascular surgeons are on staff and we currently have a full complement of residents and fellows. Research is encouraged, and recent trainees have presented at the SVS, SCVS, VESS, and Southern Vascular meetings. In addition, we are involved in multiple large clinical trials, allowing experiences in cutting-edge and current technologies. Academic 5+2 Fellowship Program – The UPMC Division of Vascular Surgery has had a successful two-year independent residency program (fellowship) in vascular surgery since 2001 and has been able to secure ongoing ACGME accreditation since. The two-year independent vascular surgery residency after general surgery training is an ACGME-approved program for two residents per year, offering clinical experience including the core service rotations, endovascular interventional experience, a venous rotation, a clinical noninvasive vascular laboratory education, and clinical research. In addition to their clinical training, the vascular surgery 5+2 residents are encouraged to participate in clinical research projects throughout their educational experience. Integrated 0+5 Residency Program – The five-year integrated residency program is designed to train a well-rounded vascular specialist with expertise in clinical and academic vascular care. The program is available to fourth-year medical students through the standard application and matching pathways (ERAS and NRMP). The program offers core surgical training in the residents’ first two years, during which time the residents complete general surgery rotations. The core years also include a body imaging radiology rotation and a cardiology rotation. The remaining three years are devoted exclusively to vascular surgery training and include core service rotations, endovascular interventional experience, a venous rotation, a clinical noninvasive vascular laboratory education, and clinical research. The program provides exposure to cutting edge evolving new technologies and research, and includes an additional mandatory two years of research under a T32 training grant. These mandatory research years start after the third clinical year and include basic science research, biomechanical engineering research, or clinical research with the possibility of obtaining an MSc degree in clinical research.
