SurgicalScription: Vascular Surgery
Do you experience discomfort, swelling & varicose veins?
Varicose veins are caused by faulty valves in the vein, which over time can lead to skin problems, such as itching, redness and eczema. If left untreated some patients can even go onto develop leg ulcers as a result of this condition.
For over 100 years the traditional treatment for varicose veins was the painful process of vein stripping, which is normally carried out under general anaesthesia in operating theatres and sometimes involves an overnight stay in a hospital bed.
This treatment involves the complete removal of the vein and a groin incision, it has a prolonged recovery pro!le with long return to normal activities - especially driving and walking.
Now patients can be treated with the VNUS Closure® procedure, a highly e"ective alternative to painful vein stripping surgery.
The procedure is recognised by NICE (The National Institute of Clinical Excellence). A virtually pain free procedure on a walk-in, walk-out basis in around 40 minutes without a general anaesthetic, hospital admission or overnight stay.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Is the VNUS Closure® procedure painful?A: Patients report feeling little, if any pain during and after the procedure.
Q: How quickly after treatment can I return to normal activities?A: Patients are walking immediately after treatment and can resume normal activities within one day.
Q: Is there any scarring, bruising or swelling after the procedure?A: Patients report minimal to no scarring, bruising or swelling following the procedure.
Q: How effective is the VNUS Closure® procedure?A: Published data suggest that two years after treatment, 96.7% of the treated veins remain closed.
Q: Is the treatment covered by my health insurance?A: Most major health insurers cover the Closure® procedure in part or in full.
Q: Do I have to wear bandages or stockings after the procedure?A: We recommend that you wear support stockings for 3 to 10 days after your procedure.
What does the new treatment consist of?
The new treatment consists of a radio frequency “microwave” catheter, which is inserted into the vein through a tiny pinhole 2-3mm incision just below the knee using an ultrasound scanner. Once the catheter is correctly positioned and local anaesthetic injected, the microwave catheter gently heats the diseased vein sealing it from the inside, e"ectively closing it down.
Blood then !nds its way back to the heart through more healthy veins. A surgical stocking is applied and after a short rest the patient simply walks away treated.

When stripping surgery and the Closure® procedure are compared, results favour the Closure® procedure.
Patients who have the Closure® procedure:
• Experience less pain • Resume normal activities within one day • Return to work more than a week earlier than stripping patients • Have a better quality of life compared to vein-stripping patients
The Closure® procedure is highly e"ective with more than 96.7% of veins treated remaining closed after 2 years.
Since 1998, more than 350,000 VNUS Closure® procedures have been performed worldwide.
