• Standards were sent out to all Validus AWRD clients in March

• Food safety items added• Removal of the Weather section

– Clients did not want this information

• Questions are all numbered• If the dairy company manages several

facilities, management systems only need to be audited once

• = 88 milking cows• = 33 dry• = 55 calves

2016 Tool Changes


Management

• The policy is posted in worker's native language in a prominent location

• There is a documented record of the animal welfare policy/Cow Care Agreement signed and dated

• Written training records verify training, including date of training, training topic, trainer and signature of trainee

• Process to follow when introducing newly delivered animals into the dairy


Management (Cont.)

• Farm has a permanent animal identification plan in place to be able to track animals.

• Written emergency contact sheet that is posted and readily accessible by employees.

• Farm has an Emergency Action Plan and employees are trained


Herd Health

• Pain intervention is addressed in HHP in areas relevant to animal illness (acute metritis, mastitis, etc.), injury, surgery (teat amputation, DAs, etc.), or pain-inducing processes (addressing both calves and cows)

• Farm has a documented process for Veterinary Feed Directives (VFD) if applicable.

• Designated pen for chronic and severe lame cows (closest to parlor)


Herd Health-Continued

• Directive of expectations for the use of electric prods to move cattle by trained personnel in the hoof trimming area

• Animal health products require proper storage based on instructions– Stored in container with product name– Product(s) are not expired– Sharps container for needles– Use of detectable needles


Special Needs

• Personnel are trained (interview or record) to move non-ambulatory animals

• Care is provided to non-ambulatory animals (Pass/Fail)

• Record of medication use and treatment that includes animal identification, date of treatment, drug administered, dosage, route of administration, withdrawal time, and initials of individual treating animals


Nutrition/Water

• Feed ration meets the National Research Council (NRC) requirements for dairy cattle for each age and stage of animal (verify through contact with nutritionist)

• Water is positioned throughout the dairy• Water tanks are cleaned on a regular basis• Calves provided with water must have

access to drinkable water • Water is available to cows at parlor exit (in

return alley) (dry lots)


Facilities• Electric fences must be designed,

maintained and used so that contact with them does not cause injury

• Electric backing/crowd gates must be designed, maintained and used so that contact with them does not cause injury

• Pest control program (flies, birds, rodents, etc.) appear to be effective

• Where winter conditions dictate, shelter (e.g. windbreaks, mounding) is required

• Animals giving birth outdoors must have shelter and protection


Animal Observations

• Stalls are bedded (Proper bedding amount equates to leg lesion observations)

• If body conditioning scores, locomotion scores, and the Cow Comfort Index indicates that animals have quality resting time/area, then this area can be marked as "acceptable" if animals are not competing for feed, water, and places to lie down

• Cow Comfort Index (CCI) (Audit verification would equate to the number of cows using (lying down) stalls divided by the total number of animals in stalls


Transport/Calves

• Written animal handling protocol gives clear directives to NOT break tails or ear twisting when moving animals.

• Colostrum = 4 quarts or 10% body weight• Disbudding up to day 4 with no medication• No prods used on calves

Clients

• Dannon, A2, etc. will use the 2015 audit tool– Started with last year’s standards

• Existing Clients– Use the 2016 audit tool

• Karla and Matt will be responsible to make sure that you have the correct tool


Action Plans

• Action Plan (initiated in 2013)‒ An action plan is submitted by the producer to

correct this on-farm and needs to be accepted by Validus

‒ Parameter becomes Pass/Fail in subsequent year

• Action Plans from previous audit will be provided to the auditor

Continual Program Focus

• As the program continues and with critical videos in the media, diligence in verification needs to increase Crucial to credibility and defense of audit

• Stay true to the intent of the question If you have questions on the intent, let us know

• Notes: be brief, be clear, list verification method, justify NA

• Verification on protocols


Dairy Information

• We do request updated information from clients when we send letter out to them; don’t always get it

• Read request from us carefully before accepting assignment to allow adequate time and proper scheduling– Realize which audits are being asked to be

conducted– Make sure you know the allotted time

• Program is add-on to AWR-D• Not used extensively• Audit of biosecurity and systems• Best if completed with AWR-Dairy tool• No changes for 2016

Milk Separation Tool

• Use of tool limited to those using the Validus mark on end-product

• No longer using the USDA PVP shield• Only one client-AOD

– Up to 9 milk plants that are audited
