Message from the 2011 Catwalk for a Cure Chairs

Message from the ASCF Board of Directors

We would like to welcome you today and express our gratitude to each of you for your support of the Amschwand Sarcoma Cancer Foundation. As an organization run entirely by volunteers, we are proud and honored to serve as this year’s Catwalk for a Cure chairs. Please know how much your support means to ASCF, to the families they serve and to each of us. We hope that you will be inspired today by the stories told and that your support of the ASCF mission will continue. Thank you,

Millette Sherman Susan Plank Sarah Simon

Since 2001 the Amschwand Sarcoma Cancer Foundation has worked to increase sarcoma specific research, to provide tangible support to families affected by the disease and to create a greater awareness of the needs of families affected by sarcoma cancers. Because of support from you, ASCF has provided more than 2500 nights of free short-term housing to out-of-town sarcoma patients and their families. We have established the Amschwand Sarcoma Cancer Foundation Pre-doctoral Sarcoma Fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center helping to ensure the best and brightest researchers enter the field. We have directly funded research into Ewing’s sarcoma, osteosarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, GIST, liposarcoma and other sarcoma subtypes. Just as important, we have helped to shed light on the challenges faced by sarcoma patients, their families and the doctors trying to save them. None of this work is possible without the success of our annual Catwalk for a Cure event. On behalf of the patients, families and researchers we serve, we thank this year’s Catwalk Chairs, our many volunteers, our donors and each of you for your past and continued support. With Gratitude,

Missy BellingerBoard Chair

2011 Survivor HonoreeShelby Robin

When asked what inspires her, twenty-three year old Shelby Robin will tell you “there is nothing like working with kids. Every day is filled with laughter.” While the children with whom she works are cancer patients, Shelby will tell you “they are kids first and foremost.” Miss Robin knows something about being a kid with cancer. This former cheerleader and gymnast, was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma at age twelve after being injured horseback riding. Fortunately, her horseback riding injury allowed doctors to detect the cancer sooner than they may have otherwise. Unfortunately, the treatment required would be gruelingly difficult. Six rounds of chemotherapy and a leg amputation would be necessary to ensure the young gymnast’s best chance of survival.

Still Shelby proceeded with her treatment and has not only survived, she has thrived. In June of 2000, Miss Robin was declared cancer free. She continued to pursue her passions and competed as a cheerleader with Woodlands High School and with Woodlands Elite Cheerleading. She would later be elected as Senior Class President followed by acceptance to the University of Texas at Austin where she would decide to pursue nursing. “I made the decision my freshman year of college. I feel like nursing is what I was made to do” Robin says. As if that were not impressive enough, Shelby continued to excel outside of the academic arena on campus. Her freshman year, she pledged TriDelta and would later become President of the sorority whose ironic philanthropic focus is on children’s cancer charities.

Shelby will tell you that it has been a long-term dream of hers to work for MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Center and like most of her other pursuits, the dynamic Shelby Robin made that dream a reality last year when she joined the hospital staff as a pediatric oncology nurse helping children who like her are full of potential. She’s making a difference and inspiring others.

Cheering for Shelby today are her Mom Barbara and her Dad Jon.

Anyone can tell you when you meet these two couples that their outer beauty is only matched by their compassion and commitment for charitable causes. Cancer charities are no exception and the Amschwand Sarcoma Cancer Foundation (ASCF) has been most fortunate to be on the receiving end of the Burk and Fields families’ generosity for the last five plus years. In 2005, Greggory Burk was introduced to the foundation and her dedication to charity was clear. The following year, she would chair the annual Catwalk for a Cure event helping to catapult ASCF to the next level in terms of research dollars and tangible support offered to sarcoma families. Since then, Greggory has remained a steadfast supporter of the event and has become a cherished friend to ASCF. In addition to her support of ASCF, she helps to advance the missions of other worthy Houston-based non profits serving on the Board of Directors for Family Services, the Houston Ballet and The Partnership for Baylor College of Medicine. Of course, Greggory’s husband Pat shares her excitement for philanthropy. In addition to his continued support of ASCF, Catwalk for a Cure and his wife’s many other charitable endeavors, Pat Burk’s personal commitment to the Houston community is evidenced through his own service on the Board of the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Men of Distinction Board and his role on the MD Anderson’s Advance Team. When he is not supporting his community through charitable service, Pat serves as Executive Vice President and President of Construction Projects for JD Fields & Company Inc. Together Greggory and Pat will chair the 2012 Houston Ballet Ball. Of course this power couple’s favorite role is that of being parents to their beautiful daughter.

Allie & Jay FieldsAllie Fields (then Allie Nachtigall) also became acquainted with ASCF in 2005 through her role on staff at PaperCity. With a background in public relations and a passion for the ASCF mission, Allie joined the ASCF Board of Directors in 2010. Losing a beloved aunt to breast cancer when Allie was just nine and years later a cousin to sarcoma, Allie’s dedication to help those affected by sarcoma and other cancers is in part fueled by such personal loss. Since then, Allie’s work in the war against cancer has become a calling of sorts. Evidenced through her involvement in many Houston-based charities aimed at serving those affected by the disease including serving as Chairman of the American Cancer Society’s Cattle Baron’s Ball Big Board as well as in the past serving as Publicity Chairman for Girls Night Out benefiting Bo’s Place. Allie currently sits on the Executive Board for Victory and this year she will continue her support of Cattle Baron’s by serving as raffle chairman. When Allie is not focusing her time on helping others, she contributes as a writer for publications such as CultureMap. Of course, any cause supported Allie is equally embraced by her supportive husband, Jay Fields. Jay’s own passion for cancer causes is also evident. In addition to lending his support to ASCF, Jay is an avid supporter of Cattle Baron’s Ball and the American Cancer Society. He is also an active alumni and supporter of his alma mater SMU. When Jay is not wearing his philanthropic hat, he serves as President of JD Fields & Company Inc.
