If you're keen to influence the way ourenvironment is developed or conserved, ourprofessionally accredited Urban Planningdegree could be for you.

Are you interested in your surroundings? Curious about howplaces change? Newcastle provides the ultimate case studyfor planning students. The rise and decline of industry andthe recent cultural renaissance have turned the city into a‘living laboratory’ for exploration and study.

There is a fantastic range of live planning projects on yourdoorstep and you will have plenty of opportunities to get outand about in the city.

You study fascinating topics such as design awareness, environmental sustainability and housing policy, and enjoy arange of field trips and projects to see planning in action.

You can also take a field trip in second year to examineinternational planning issues.

Highlights of this degreeProfessional accreditation*This degree is professionally accredited by the Royal TownPlanning Institute (RTPI). This means it satisfies thestandards set by the planning profession.

Urban Planning and MPlan students will be automaticallyenrolled to free student membership of the RTPI at the startof their degree (individuals can opt out).

*All professional accreditations are reviewed regularly bytheir professional body.

What you will study

Study topicsOur three-year Urban Planning BA Honours degree offers arewarding insight into urban planning and environmentalissues.

You study topics including:

• the history of ideas for thinking about development oftowns and cities

• how social issues ranging from inequality to gender, migration and economic change influence our aspirationsfor designing and managing places

• the challenge of climate change and dilemmas aroundhow we respond

• the values and demands which drive housing policy andhow this effects our ability to provide housing for all

You will undertake projects that address real-life planningsituations and challenges, taking you out into the city andbeyond.

In the third year you will complete a dissertation on aplanning topic of your choice, developing high-level researchand presentation skills.

Field trips and study abroadYou will enjoy frequent field trips and projects, experiencingfirst-hand examples of planning in the region and furtherafield.

As a founder member of the Association of EuropeanSchools of Planning, we have strong European links, providing the chance to experience differences in planningapproaches beyond the UK, such as the international fieldtrip at Stage 2.

Flexible degree structureAt Newcastle, you have time to decide on your career path.

BA and MPlan students study the same programme for thefirst three years (Stages 1 to 3). This means transfer ispossible between the two degrees up to the end of the thirdyear.

This gives you time to decide whether you want to pursuechartered town planner status as your degree progresses.

Becoming a Chartered Town PlannerTo become a Chartered Town Planner you need to fulfil theRTPI educational requirements and then complete twoyears' experience in planning practice.

• Our four-year MPlan degree offers an RTPI-accreditedroute to Chartered Town Planner status

• Our three-year BA Honours degree provides thefoundation for this but requires an additional year ofMaster's level study

This three-year degree satisfies the core spatial planningrequirements for RTPI membership, but not the specialistteaching requirements to achieve Chartered Town Plannerstatus directly.

If you decide, during your BA degree, that you would like tobecome a Chartered Town Planner, you can apply totransfer onto our MPlan degree up until the end of your thirdyear.

Or you can study a specialist Master’s qualification, shouldyou decide to return to planning later in your career.

Boost your employability with a work placementApply to spend 9 to 12 months on an optional workplacement between Stages 2 and 3. You can apply tospend your placement year with any organisation and willreceive University support to do so.

You’ll gain first-hand experience of working in the sector, putting your learning into practice and developing yourprofessional expertise.

It will extend your degree by a year and is subject toavailability.
