Work placement or study abroad (optional)You can gain valuable industry experience by applying totake a 12-month work placement in a UK or overseasbusiness between Stages 2 and 3 of your degree.

Our current placement students are in roles such as:

• private markets analyst• student analyst• tax compliance intern• international CRM analytics intern• trade counter demand planner

They are working on the following projects:

• measuring the success of The Body Shop’s loyalty cardand analysing the impact of new product developmentlaunches

• managing the supply chain into and out of the tradecounters, reviewing sales rates, and forecasting stockrequirements at Screwfix

• sourcing due diligence on behalf of UBS’s private marketinvestments

• analysing government data, including the analysis ofOrganisation for Economic Co-operation andDevelopment (OECD) indicators, and comparing the UKto other OECD countries for the NHS

Alternatively, you might opt to gain work experience throughsummer internships.

You'll receive support from the Business School's dedicatedPlacement Officer and the University's Careers Service tohelp you find a placement that matches your skills andinterests.

Alternatively, you can study abroad between Stages 2 and3 through the ERASMUS+ scheme. You'll spend the yearstudying at one of our partner universities in Europe, and wealso have partners outside of Europe.

If you are eligible, you may spend Stage 2 studyingeconomics at the University of Groningen in theNetherlands for a year.

This is a fully integrated study abroad experience, taught inEnglish, which counts directly towards your final degreemark. Places are available on a competitive basis, andfollowing consultation with your Programme Director.

Economics and BusinessManagement careersEconomics graduates are highly employable. Apart from thespecific understanding of the subject, employers value theskills of numeracy and analysis, the ability to communicateand the capacity to grasp broad issues which our graduatesacquire. Graduate destinations vary widely in terms of therange of roles and employers, including regional, nationaland international organisations, across many sectors.

Whilst only a few economics graduates may be expected tobecome professional economists, many find it an excellentbase for entry into a rewarding career in finance – includingaccounting, insurance, tax and banking, or management.
