This degree offers a lively andthought-provoking introduction to importantideas about architecture and cities.

We place particular emphasis on the idea of ‘alternativepractice’, inspired by the work of innovative architects andplanners whose approach aims to encourage people toactively participate in the design of their environment.

You study topics such as:

• understanding sustainable development• researching local economies• understanding cities• architectural and urban design

We use design projects, historical examples, theoreticalideas and a live community project to support yourunderstanding of how architecture and cities can bedeveloped.

If you graduate from this degree with a 2:1 or above, youwill automatically receive an offer to study our MA UrbanDesign programme upon application. You may beconsidered with a 2:2 but an interview will be required.

What you will study

Diverse range of modulesYou will study a balance of architectural and planningtopics that provide you with an understanding of urbanarchitecture and alternative practice.

You'll also have the opportunity to explore diverse topicssuch as:

• architectural history• the current planning process• other modules relating to cities, space and people

Practical design experienceYou will learn about the design process through a series ofprojects. This will develop your architectural thinking,skills and ability.

You'll also gain an understanding of architecturaldesign through working with drawing and model-making,particularly in Stage 1 and Adobe Suite and CADsoftware in Stage 2.

Other opportunitiesYou'll have the opportunity to learn from leadingprofessionals, and hear from practitioners through our'Conversations with Practice' lecture series.

In Stage 3 you'll have the chance to participate in a livecommunity project, seeing theory put into practice.

Boost your employability with a work placementApply to spend 9 to 12 months on an optional workplacement between Stages 2 and 3. You can apply tospend your placement year with any organisation and willreceive University support to do so.

You’ll gain first-hand experience of working in the sector,putting your learning into practice and developing yourprofessional expertise.

It will extend your degree by a year and is subject toavailability.

Facilities

WorkshopOur purpose built workshop comprises of a fully equippedanalogue workshop and casting space as well as state ofthe art digital fabrication facilities, including:

• 3D printers• a CNC router• laser cutters

All students receive a safety induction in the use of theequipment and expert technical staff are on-hand to offerhelp and advice.

Design studiosOur design studios include CAD facilities and drawingboards. We have dedicated AUP Studio Space with limitedaccess however you will have access to studio space 24/7elsewhere in the School.

Other facilitiesYou will also benefit from:

• Archiprint facilities, 5x A0 Printers, 2 x A0 scanners, A3scanners available in studio rooms

• student-Run Kofi bar providing a social space for you tomeet with staff and fellow students

You will collaborate with artists and engineers to test designideas at 1:1 scale, and explore alternative forms of practicewith community projects.

Transfer opportunitiesWe know that you may not yet be sure exactly where yourarchitectural/planning interests lie. That's why we make iteasy for you to transfer to a similar degree within the Schoolif you find your interests change.

After completion of Stage 1, you can apply to transfer toStage 2 of one of the following degrees:

• Architecture BA Honours degree• Urban Planning BA Honours degree• Master of Planning MPlan degree

Entry to Stage 2 of Architecture BA Honours (K100) will beassessed on individual merit.

• It is based on a portfolio interview with the DegreeProgramme Director and/or associated staff in K100 toconsider eligibility for transfer

• It requires that you selected and passed the ARC1013and ARC1014 modules

Entry to Stage 2 of Urban Planning BA Honours (K421) orMaster of Planning MPlan Honours (K400) is assessed onindividual merit and requires that:

• you achieve a mark of 50% or more in the TCP1014module
