Intensive English Language Center (IELC) The mission of the Intensive English Language Center (IELC) is to provide quality English Language instruction and cultural orientation to international students and other non-native speakers of English in order to prepare them to become successful members of the academic and social community of the University of Nevada, Reno and of the United States.

Full-time English as a Second Language Program• Twenty class hours per week

• Five, eight, 10, and 16 week sessions

• Small class sizes with personal attention-12-15 students per class

• Academic skills emphasized classes in Reading/Writing, Listening/Speaking, and Integrated Skills (mini courses in a variety of content areas)

• Six levels of instruction (Beginning to Graduate)

• Certificate of completion after each level

• Experienced instructors, all with M.A. or Ph.D.

• Comprehensive orientation

Conditional AdmissionIf you are already academically qualified for university admission (undergraduate) but you do not have the required English proficiency score, you may receive conditional admission to a degree program at the University of Nevada, Reno. Your admission documents will state that you will begin academic coursework after completion of the English requirement.

Admission without TOEFL, IELTS or PearsonYou may enter Nevada universities at the undergraduate level after successfully completing the IELC program. IELC recommendation fulfills the English proficiency requirement for undergraduate admission.

Enrollment in Academic ClassesIn the High Advanced levels of the program, in addition to studying English full time, you may be eligible to enroll in a 3 credit academic class at the University.

With eight buildings and several room configurations, students can choose the living arrangement that best fits them and their needs. Lake Tahoe and the SierraThe Sierra Nevada, which stretches from California into Nevada, is one of the defining geologic and geographic landmarks of the region. Located only 38 miles from campus, Lake Tahoe is considered one of the most picturesque spots on the planet. Tahoe is approximately 22 miles long and 12 miles wide, with 72 miles of scenic shoreline. Tahoe’s famous sky-blue water is 99.7 percent pure, about the same as distilled water.

Recreation: Reno-Tahoe is home to a host of outdoor recreation activities, including: 50 championship golf courses, 18 world-class alpine and cross country ski resorts, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice climbing, sledding, ice skating, hiking, biking, camping, horseback riding, rock climbing, mountaineering, boating, sailing, kayaking, diving, water skiing, rafting and windsurfing. www.unr.edu/reno-tahoe
