Master of Business Administration (MBA)

This Master of Business Administration (MBA) will accelerate your management career and teach you how to solve real problems in a global business environment.

It’s suited to recent graduates with a degree in any discipline but with typically less than four years’ work experience. The Business Mentoring Program offers you seminars with guest speakers, group work and case studies, individual mentoring and coaching and career preparation.

LocationMelbourne-based classes will be held at the Emily McPherson College Building, a magnificent heritage property on the corner of Russell and Victoria streets. Some classes may be held at the Swanston Academic Building.

This program is also offered through Open Universities Australia. www.rmit.edu.au/oua

Learning and TeachingThe MBA is delivered in three study periods—Semester 1, Semester 2 and a spring/summer study period. Full-time students will study four courses per study period and classes are typically held during the day. Part-time students will study two courses per study period and classes are typically held during the evening.

You will move through the program as a cohort, work in teams and benefit from the additional insights and understandings that come from interaction with classmates. Orientation and social activities encourage the development of study circles and instil the value of networking.

You will experience a variety of teaching and learning approaches during the program, including lectures, tutorials, seminars, simulations and site visits. Lectures deliver a comprehensive review of the latest thinking and world’s best practice, while tutorials provide opportunities for facilitated discussion. Factually based case studies, a key feature of successful quality MBA degrees worldwide, are important components of RMIT’s MBA courses and add further realism to the learning experience.

In addition, you will have access to the Learning Hub and other online and digital resources such as lecture notes, assessment tools, discussion boards and podcasts through the myRMIT student portal.

AssessmentOngoing assessment throughout the semester includes examinations, essays, reports, oral classes, presentations, group projects, research projects, laboratory projects and practical assignments.

While group assignments are an important component of every course, the focus of the assessment is weighted towards individual performance.

Program StructureYou must complete 192 credit points, which equals 16 courses (12 credit points each). The program is structured in stages to enable you to:

— gain a solid background in business

— undertake coursework that introduces core aspects of business practice

— combine core discipline knowledge with electives to consolidate the knowledge you have gained through your studies

— showcase your emerging business expertise through the final two compulsory courses Applied Industry Practice and Business Operations (Strategy and Application).

Applied Industry Practice is a compulsory work-integrated learning course studied in the final stage of the program. This course together with Business Operations (Strategy and Application), a compulsory capstone course, are undertaken at the end of the program because they bring focus to the range of activities and knowledge you have acquired, and allow you to showcase your emerging business expertise.

It is recommended that you follow the sequence of courses presented which is based on your accumulation of knowledge and skills. For example, courses in strategy development that require an understanding of business analysis, marketing and finance are scheduled after functional courses introducing these concepts so that you can draw upon these skills in creating strategic activities. Likewise, you will first learn about your own development, strengths and style as a manager or leader before moving to the critical issues involved in managing and leading others.

An outline of the current program structure is provided on this page. All courses are 12 credit points each unless otherwise indicated.

Juris Doctor

Designed for non-law graduates of any discipline, the Juris Doctor is a postgraduate law program focusing on business law, international law and the justice system and leads to entry into the legal profession. Equal emphasis is placed on gaining discipline knowledge, conducting legal research and engaging with professional practice.

Some students will seek admission to practise as lawyers at the completion of the program, while others will be looking to expand their career options through a wide range of roles within and outside the legal profession.

The Juris Doctor program offers you the opportunity to meet the academic requirements for entry into the legal profession while also gaining insights into key issues facing contemporary legal, justice and regulatory systems in Australia and internationally.

LocationYour classes will be held at the Emily McPherson College Building, a magnificent heritage property on the corner of Russell and Victoria streets.

Facilities include a student lounge, conference suite and high-tech lecture theatres and classrooms. Moots are conducted in the nearby Old Magistrates’ Court building.

This program is also offered through Open Universities Australia. www.rmit.edu.au/oua

Learning and TeachingClasses are held in the evening, including Friday evenings, and on weekends. The compulsory course Introduction to the Australian Legal System and Legal Methods will be taught intensively over three non-consecutive weekends.

RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches including lectures, seminars, studios, workshops, presentations, group discussions and syndicate work.

You will have access to the Learning Hub and other online and digital resources through the myRMIT student portal.

Moot CourtA moot is an activity where students take part in simulated court proceedings, which usually involves drafting briefs and presenting an oral (legal) argument.

The aim of the moot court is to consolidate the learning of substantive law and provide experience in legal advocacy, presentation and teamwork. It is a test of the students’ understanding of court etiquette, legal research and legal writing.

Each student generally has 15 minutes to make their oral submissions to the court, fielding questions from the bench in the process. This activity normally takes place in the second and third years of the Juris Doctor program.

AssessmentOngoing assessment throughout the semester may include examinations, essays, reports, oral class presentations, research projects, quizzes, reflective reports, in-class tests, case studies, practical legal training and mock Tribunal hearing group projects.

Program StructureYou must complete 288 credit points, which generally equals 24 courses (12 credit points each) consisting of 16 core law courses (including the ‘Priestley 11’, and the compulsory work-integrated learning course, Negotiation and Dispute Resolution) and eight electives.

You can select business law electives or a generalist legal elective stream to deepen your understanding in a specific discipline area and/or enhance your capabilities.

Students entering the Juris Doctor are required to have a high level of English proficiency. Legal study requires students to be able to research and analyse the law from primary resources, to apply the findings of such work to the solution of legal problems, and to be able to communicate the results of their learning, both orally and in writing.

Old Melbourne Magistrates’ Court

In 1842–3 a modest two-storey brick building was erected to house the Supreme Court of Victoria on the corner of Russell and La Trobe streets, Melbourne. In 1911, the foundation stone for the current courthouse was laid and the building was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, DV Hennessy, on 20 January 1914. Over the years rooms have been converted and the purpose for which the space has been used has changed.

Famous trials held in the Magistrates’ Court:

— thirteen prisoners taken at the Eureka Stockade, who were arraigned for high treason in 1855 but acquitted

— notorious bushranger Ned Kelly, who was tried in 1880, convicted of murder and hanged at the Old Melbourne Gaol next door

— infamous gangster Leslie ‘Squizzy’ Taylor, said to have regularly made social visits to police friends at the court, was tried in 1924 for negligent driving that caused the death of a pedestrian.

The Melbourne Magistrates’ Court relocated to the corner of William Street and Lonsdale Street in the early 1990s and the Russell Street building was closed until purchased by RMIT University in 1997. The Court is now used by postgraduate students for moot court presentations as part of the Juris Doctor program.

RMIT Centre for Innovative Justice

The Centre’s key areas of focus include therapeutic and restorative justice, non-adversarial dispute resolution, and access to justice.

For students, the Centre aims to provide practical exposure to the process of law reform and equip them to use their legal training to advocate for and achieve change.

Other activities of the Centre include:

— conducting research on contemporary law and justice issues

— contributing to public debate through publications and events

— collaborating with agencies and organisations involved in delivering innovative justice programs

— providing opportunities to collaborate on research projects and policy development

— assisting with work placement and internship opportunities for students and volunteers within public sector and community agencies, as well as the private legal profession.
