Theabilitytotakediversestacks,fromA4toA0sizemedia, inflat,collatedprintsimprovesproductivity:“Theintegratedoutputstackingtray,evenwhenotherteamsareprinting,hasmadeoutputclutterathingofthepast,”Mottexplains.

Secondly,performance.Kovacsaysthetrueprintpreviewreduceserrorsandeliminateswaste,andbeingabletoprintallfilesacrossarangeofmediaimprovesflexibility.Butitistheimagequalitythatistheessentialfactor.“Amongourpeers, thereisafineappreciationforqualitydraughtsmanship. TheHPDesignjetT1500ePrinterproducesaprintofsuch qualitythatitcatchestheireye–theyaresurprisedwhenweexplainitisnottheoriginal.

OnesignificantprojectthatservesasanexampleisTheMaribor’svisionforthefuture-MariborisSlovenia’ssecondlargestcity andtheEuropeanCapitalofCulturein2012.TheMaribor 100YCprojectisadesignvisionforthecity’s100yeardevelopment,envisagingtheworldof2112.Theprogramincludesonlinemoduleswithleadinginternationalarchitectureschools.Itutilizestheresourcesof23universitiescoveringits100-plusmultidisciplinaryprojects,harnessingthecollaborationandimaginationof450architecturalanddesignstudents.

Enabling productive collaboration

Thelogisticsofthecollaborationaredaunting.Speciallycreatedonlinecollaborationsoftware,DesignResearch(D-RES)helpsestablishdirectionsandagreeuponparameters.Togetthemaximumproductivityfromthesessions,thecollaboratorsdiscussanddefinethespecificationoftheoutput-printeddrawings,rendersanddetailedplans.Thesearethesharedspringboardforconvertingideasintopracticaldesign.

Ina12-weekperiodtensofthousandsofdrawingsand 2.1millionfilesareexchangedwiththeD-RESplatformfortheMaribor100YCproject.TheprecisionandqualitydemandedintheprintoutputofMaribor100YCplansanddrawingsisabsolute.

Theprintoutputmustmeetexhibitionpresentationstandards, asKovacexplains:“Achievingthedesiredoutputiscrucial. Theimagequalityissacrosanct.Weneedtoseetheresultintheprintedformexactlyasitwasdefined.Theresolution,thecoloringandthehighqualityofthelineworkisvital.

“Then,forinstance,wecanimmediatelydistinguishandreadbetweenthecomplexdifferentiationofthethickandthinoutlines.Thesearesooftenthecodethatunlocksthecriticaldimensionsofanarchitecturalplan.”

Havingdefinedthekeyparametersthataprinterneedstomeetinthehighlydemandingfieldofarchitecturaldesignimaging,Kovacdecidedtotestthe36-inch,tworollHPDesignjetT1500ePrinteratRMITUniversity.Kovacsaysthathisteam welcomedthethreekeyareasofinnovationwherebythe HPDesignjetT1500ePrinteriseliminatingwhathedescribesas“thehorrendouspatternofhitandmissprinting”thathadpreviouslybeenthenorm.

Firstly,theuserexperience.Kovac’scolleague,KatherineMott,theteam’sProjectManagersaystheHPDesignjetT1500ePrinterisbothintuitiveandergonomicallysatisfying,meaningthereisnoneedtosupervisestudentsinitsuse.“Itputstheuserinchargeoftheprintprocess.Theadjustabletouchscreenisaneattouch.”
