    Unit introduction

You will look at different businesses that exist locally, regionally andnationally. You will need to understand the nature of these businessesand the business environment in which they operate.

The wealth of the nation is created through business activity.Businesses have a wide range of purposes such as supplying goods andservices and/or manufacturing goods. Some businesses want to make

profits, others do not. Businesses contribute to the national wellbeing.

Businesses are organised differently. The largest business operatesglobally. Others may wish to remain small and free from too muchlegal control. The smallest businesses, for example, may be run fromthe owners home. Businesses are classified in terms of their activitiesand often they are interdependent upon each other. You will need to

consider the relative importance of each by looking at the localeconomy.

Businesses do not operate in a vacuum! The government sets thebusiness context. Account has to be taken of the requirements of the

European Union in areas such as competition. The government wants tocreate a business framework in which businesses and people can

succeed. You will understand how the government affects businesssuch as the decision on interest rates. When interest rates fall,

businesses borrow cheaply to invest and produce more to sell in the UKand abroad, so they take on more employees who receive incomes

which they then spend on goods and services so stimulating demand forproducts from other businesses. Growth, income, exporting andemployment can all be examined through examples such as this.

You will look at the changing patterns in the business environment andthe reasons for these changes. Businesses need to be flexible andresponsive to the changes in the business environment if they are tosurvive and succeed.
