Problems in Teaching on Spiritual Warfare

• Too controversial: Can Christians be possessed, oppressed, depressed?

• Uncertain Expectations: vomit up snakes and frogs, foaming at the mouth and other manifestations OR too quiet to be real!

• Semantics: demonization (not Demon-possession), possessed, oppressed, tormented, tempted,

• Spirit of fear, doubt, “formality” “overeating”

• Spirit of generosity, wisdom, restoration• Most of the time, the spirit of fear has to

do with the spirit of a human being, not of the outside world.

Ephesians 1: 1-3 (References are NIV unless stated otherwise.)

• 1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to the saints in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus:

• 2Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

• 3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms (world of spirits) with every spiritual blessing in Christ.m

Heavenly Realms

• Ephesians 2: 6• And God raised us up with Christ and

seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus…

• Ephesians 3:10• His intent was that now, through the

church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms...

Page 5: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

• Ephesians 6:12• For our struggle is not against

flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.

Heavenly Realms

Page 6: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

• I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.

Heavenly Realms Ephesians 1: 17-19

Page 7: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

• That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.

Heavenly Realms Ephesians 1: 19-21

Page 8: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

2 Corinthians 3: 13-15• We are not like Moses, who would put a

veil over his face to keep the Israelites from gazing at it while the radiance was fading away. But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.

• It’s not a battle of with the natural world, but of the spirit world. You can win the battle, but not the war

Page 9: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

• 2 Corinthians 4:4• The god of this

age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God

Heavenly Realms

•  John 3: 1-3• Now there was a man of the

Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him."  In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see or enter the kingdom of God unless he is born again.

3 Realms of Spirits:

The realms of God, Angels, and People (3 ranks)

Page 12: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

Only God occupies the highest realm

Page 13: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

Only God is OMNIPRESENT (satan is not

everywhere), OMNISCIENT(satan does not know

the future) and OMNIPOTENT(satan’s power is limited)

Page 14: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

Satan is Not:

*all-present

*all-knowing

*all-powerful

No where in Scripture is Satan depicted as an OPPOSITE-EQUAL of

God!

The Realm of Angels is Divided into:

Ministering

The Realm of Angels

WHEN WERE THE ANGELS CREATED?

Page 17: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

The Realm of Angels

• The Creation of the World• 1 In the beginning, God created the

(heavens) and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

Page 18: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

The Realm of Angels• The Creation of the World• Proverbs 8:22-29

“The LORD possessed me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of old. 23 Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth.24 When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water.

Page 19: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

The Realm of Angels• The Creation of the World25 Before the mountains had been shaped,    before the hills, I was brought forth,26 before he had made the earth with its fields, or the first of the dust of the world.27 When he established the heavens, I was there; when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, (Job 26:7 He stretches out the north (northern skies) over the void and hangs the earth on nothing.)

Page 20: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

The Realm of Angels

• The Creation of the World28 when he made firm the skies above,  when he established the fountains of the deep,29 when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth,

Page 21: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

The Realm of Angels

• The Creation of the WorldGenesis 1:31 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the (host) of them. Luke 2:13; Rev 19:19; Hebrews 12:12 Heavenly host

The Realm of Angels

• Job 38:4-7

• English Standard Version (ESV)

• 4 “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?

• Tell me, if you have understanding.

• 5 Who determined its measurements—surely you know!

• Or who stretched the line upon it?

• 6 On what were its bases sunk,

• or who laid its cornerstone,

• 7 when the morning stars sang together

• and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

The Realm of Angels

These are the different types of angels 1. Cherubim2. Seraphim3. Archangels4. Messengers

Page 24: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

The Realm of Angels

Cherubim

Page 25: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

The Realm of Angels

1. Cherubim The word cherub (cherubim is the Hebrew masculine plural) is a word borrowed from the Assyrian kirubu, from karâbu, "to be near", hence it means near ones, familiars, personal servants, bodyguards, courtiers. It was commonly used of those heavenly spirits, who closely surrounded the Majesty of God and paid Him intimate service (http://www.oration.com/~mm9n/articles/cherub/index.htm)The first mention of cherubs is in Gen. 3:24, where the figure is not described, but their office was, with a flaming sword, to keep or guard the way of the tree of life.

Page 26: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

The Realm of Angels

1. CherubimThe two cherubs which Moses was commanded to make at the ends of the Mercy seat, were to be of beaten work of gold; and their wings were to extend over the Mercy seat, their faces towards each other, and between them was the residence of the Deity. Ex. 15. The cherubs, in Ezekiel's vision, had each four heads or faces, the hands of a man and wings. The four faces were, the face of a bull, that of a man, that of a lion, and that of an eagle. They had the likeness of a man. Ezek. 4, and 10. In 2 Sam. 22:11, and Psalm 18. (http://av1611.com/kjbp/kjv-dictionary/cherub.html)

Seraphim

Page 29: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

Seraphim• Isaiah 6

• English Standard Version (ESV)

• Isaiah's Vision of the Lord

• 6 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called to another and said:

• “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;

• the whole earth is full of his glory!”

The Realm of Angels• MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

Page 32: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

The Realm of Angels

• Michael the Archangel • Michael means-Who is like God?• He and Gabriel are the only angels

mentioned by name. Michael is the only one mentioned as the Archangel which means chief or in charge in Greek. Gabriel means messenger. Michael is only mentioned twice as the Archangel in the Bible; 1 Thessalonians 4:16 and Jude 1:9. But he is mentioned by the name Michael in the old and NT. Daniel 12:1-3; Revelation 12:6-12

Page 33: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

The Realm of Angels

• Do guardian angels exist?

Page 34: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

The Realm of Angels

• Psalm 91:9-12• Because you have made

the LORD your dwelling place—the Most High, who is my refuge10 no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent.11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.12 On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.

Page 35: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

The Realm of Angels

• Paul in 1 Corinthians 4:9 We are being watched by the Angels.

• For I think that God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death, because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels, and to men.

Page 36: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

The Realm of Angels

Daniel 6:22 God sent his angel and shut the lions mouths, when Daniel was thrown in the lions den.

Act 5 19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said,20 “Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life.”

Page 37: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

The Realm of Angels

Two places in the Bible that it talks about there being a guardian angel.

1. Acts 12 14 Recognizing Peter's voice, in her joy she did not open the gate but ran in and reported that Peter was standing at the gate. 15 They said to her, “You are out of your mind.” But she kept insisting that it was so, and they kept saying, “It is his angel!”

Page 38: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

The Realm of Angels

2. Matthew 18:10 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.

Page 39: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

The Realm of Angels

Psalm 34:7

The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.

Page 40: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

The Realm of Angels

• (Jesus) far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. (ESV) Ephesians 1:21

Page 41: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

The Realm of Angels

• Angels are more powerful than humans because they are not confined to a physical body.

• They were created to serve God. • Hebrews 1:7: • In speaking of the angels he

says,    "He makes his angels winds,       his servants flames of fire.“

Page 42: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

• They are assigned to minister to believers.

• Hebrews 1: 14 • Are not all angels

ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

The Realm of Angels

Page 43: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

• All angels were created good because God creates no evil; however one-third of the angels followed Lucifer in his rebellion.

• Satan is a created being who chose to do evil and was cast from Heaven.

• Revelation 12: 3 • Then another sign appeared

in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on his heads. 4His tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth.

The Realm of Angels

Page 44: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

• Revelations 12:9 • The great dragon was hurled

down—that ancient ___________ called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the _________, and his ___________ with him.

The Realm of Angels

serpent

earthangels

Page 45: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

The Realm of the Human Spirit

• God created the human race “a little lower than the angels.”

• Psalm 8:4-6• What is man, that thou art mindful

of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet

Page 46: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

• The realm of human spirits is divided into the unregenerate and regenerate.

• Kingdom of Darkness and the Kingdom of Light

• The unregenerated are not under the protection of the Redeemer; whereas the regenerated can occupy a place of authority over demonic spirits.

The Realm of the Human Spirit

Page 47: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

• Ephesians 1: 17-19• I keep asking that the God of our Lord

Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.

The Realm of the Human Spirit

Page 48: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

• Ephesians 2: 1-2• As for you, you were dead in your

transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

The Realm of the Human Spirit

Page 49: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

• Ephesians 2: 3-5• All of us also lived among them

at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.

The Realm of the Human Spirit

Page 50: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

• Ephesians 2: 6• And God raised us up with Christ

and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus…

• No wonder Satan hates us!• Col. 1: 13• For he has rescued us from the

dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves

The Realm of the Human Spirit

Ministering Angels Serve God

• In worship and praise (148, Revelation 7:11).

• Psalm 103: 20• Praise the LORD, you his angels,

you mighty ones who do his bidding,      who obey his word.

• Rev. 7:11• All the angels were standing

around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshipped God

Page 52: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

Ministering Angels Serve Believers

• By protecting them:• Psalm 34:7 • God's angel sets up a circle

of protection around us while we pray. (The Message)

Page 53: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

Ministering Angels Serve Believers

• By providing guidance• Matthew 1: 20-21• But after he had considered this,

an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

Page 54: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

• Delivering from enemies • Acts 12: 6-7•   The night before Herod was to

bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. "Quick, get up!" he said, and

the chains fell off Peter's wrists. • Genesis 19:15

• Daniel 6: 22

Ministering Angels Serve Believers

Page 55: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

• Bearing souls to paradise• Luke 16: 22• The time came when the

beggar (Lazarus) died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried.

Ministering Angels Serve Believers

Page 56: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

• Serving as personal guardians • Matthew 18:10 • See that you do not look

down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.

Ministering Angels Serve Believers

Page 57: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

• Controlling the forces of nature • Matthew 28:2• There was a violent

earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.

Ministering Angels Serve Believers

Page 58: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

The Origin of Satan and Demons

• The history of Satan is not a major theme in Scripture, since the Bible is the story of God’s redemption of the human race (Missio Dei). However, insights into the origin of Satan and evil are given in such Scriptures as Isaiah 14:12-15 and Ezekiel 28: 12-15.

Page 59: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

Isaiah 14:12-15• 12 How you have fallen from heaven,

O morning star, son of the dawn!        You have been cast down to the earth,        you who once laid low the nations!

• 13 You said in your heart,        "I will ascend to heaven;        I will raise my throne        above the stars of God;        I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,        on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain.

• 14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;        I will make myself like the Most High."

• 15 But you are brought down to the grave,        to the depths of the pit.

O morning star means “lucifer.”

No one tempted Satan. God made free will for everyone. Satan choose to “ascend to heaven, raise my throne above the stars of God (above all the other angels)”

Page 60: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

Luke 10: 18-20

• He replied, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."

No spiritual gift of “casting our of demons.” It is a natural ability that everyone who has the spirit of Christ has. This means we can practice this natural ability. Jesus practiced this ability about 5% of his ministry.

Page 61: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

“I will’s” of Lucifer’s Pride

• 1. “I will ascend into heaven.”• 2. “I will raise my throne above

the stars (angels) of God.”• 3. “I will enthroned upon the

Mount of Assembly.”• 4. “I will ascend above the

heights of the clouds.”• 5. “I will make myself like the Most

High.”

Page 62: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

Ezekiel 28: 12-15 • 12 "Son of man, take up a lament concerning the

king of Tyre and say to him: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says:        " 'You were the model of perfection,        full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

• 13 You were in Eden,        the garden of God;        every precious stone adorned you:        ruby, topaz and emerald,        chrysolite, onyx and jasper,        sapphire, turquoise and beryl.        Your settings and mountings were made of gold;        on the day you were created they were prepared.

Page 63: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

• 14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub,        for so I ordained you.        You were on the holy mount of God;        you walked among the fiery stones.

• 15 You were blameless in your ways        from the day you were created        till wickedness was found in you.

• 16 Through your widespread trade        you were filled with violence,        and you sinned.        So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God,        and I expelled you, O guardian cherub,        from among the fiery stones.

Ezekiel 28:12-15

Page 64: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

Fruits of Rebellion & Jealousy

• He coveted what God has.• He hated God for having what he himself

could not have.• He attempted to rob God of what He has by

attacking the human race, especially through the tool of deceit.

• We should especially expect Satan to be angry and jealous of the saints since we are seated with Christ in the heavenlies and we are to rule with Christ and the angels (Ephesians 2:6 & I Corinthians 6:3).

Destiny of Satan and Demons

• __________________________ • The coming of the lawless one will be

in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.

Page 74: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

• According to II Thessalonians 2:9-11 and the general view of the book of Revelation, Satan will have one final fling, producing counterfeit miracles, and powerful delusion.

• His final judgment will be in the ____________. (Matthew 25:41; Revelation 20:10)

Destiny of Satan and Demons

Page 75: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

• The issue was settled at Calvary. (John 12:31, 16:11, 19:30; Colossians 2:15)

Present activity from the demonic realm

• Satan manipulates the unbeliever through __________(I John 5:19) and _________.

• We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.

Page 77: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

Present activity from the demonic realm

• He attacks the believer through ___________ (Matthew 4:1; I John 2:15-17) and __________ (I Peter 5:8). Although some would teach that demons cannot enter a believer’s life who is filled with the Spirit, it must be recognized that spirits do not occupy space. If we appeal to scientific logic, we must conclude that demons cannot be anywhere because God is ____________.

Page 78: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

What is the source of oppression?

• Entering _________ territory • Direct __________ from the Enemy • A spirit of infirmity• Permission from ________ –Job, Paul• Giving the Enemy a foothold or _________• Results of one’s own poor ___________—the

law of sowing and reaping• Results of __________________ decision to

impose their desire—sexual, physical and verbal abuse

• Nature’s laws of science

Page 79: Understanding the Spirit World Dr. Gary L. Royer.

The Gift of Discerning of Spirits

• ________________________• To one there is given through the

Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
