‘I ’ve loved every day of my placement at Channel 7. Every morning we find the stories, arrange interviews, head out of the o ce, meet people and come back and write. TV is timed to the second so you have to pick out the best grabs that are 8-1 seconds long, fill in sentences around that and make sure it all fits

I’ve been practising writing stories for all the jobs I’ve been out on and I’ve been out on such a range of stories, fun pieces and some serious ones. I really enjoy it and I love writing. It ’s definitely been a challenge but great practice in a safe environment.’

‘I’ve had one story go to air; I sat in front of the TV that night with my family and was like “this is my story!”’Emma

‘I really want to focus on independent work, especially Australian work, and giving them a leg to stand on.’ IndiaBachelor of Creative Arts

‘When I left school I wanted to be an actor, but after doing my first-year theatre production I knew acting wasn’t for me. I got a lot of compliments on my acting but it wasn’t satisfying because it wasn’t where I wanted to be.

I want to be at the initial stages of a production doing the logistical things, like budgeting and sourcing funding. I want to create productions and work behind the scenes to help people get up on their feet and get their ideas out there.’

‘I ’ve always been intrigued by how things work. The complexity and challenge of mechanical engineering appealed to me. Things move, nothing is ever stable and there’s always a very complex set of functions and analyses you need to do to figure it out.

Now I’ve taken a slightly different career path. I’m people and project managing, but I still work with big machines; I don’t think I’d be capable of fulfilling the role without my mechanical background. Managing people is challenging because it ’s so dynamic, so fluid and so fragile and yet, if you get it right, so effective.’

‘Engineers apply science and technology creatively for the betterment of society. But how

the student achieves this leadership is entirely up to them. It ’s crucial students are prepared

with transferrable skills for a multi-disciplinary world, where it is just as important in engineering

to crunch numbers, design and build structures, as it is to act with respect and integrity,

communicate and effectively liaise with people. Students also need to have entrepreneurial skills

to create new markets to help shape the world.

The way we teach these skills is through creating a safe, authentic environment in which to

succeed, where you learn and gain critical insight, considering problems that actually need solving.’

I’d lived and worked in Torres Strait and Mt Isa and I didn’t know it at the time, but that journey set the platform for my career in health. Despite being in two totally different areas to where I am now, I was confronted with the same issues in Indigenous health.

I want to help people, I want to give back to the wider community. For me, health is all about closing the gap between non-Indigenous and Indigenous peoples; so that is my drive, that is my goal. Will I have the power to do it alone? No. But I want to be a part of it.’

‘Journalism graduates should be able to go to an employer with a set of practical skills, ready to hit the ground running. However, there should still be enough room to adjust to new learnings and the pace of the industry.

Ultimately, the best journalists are the most curious people, even if they don’t start out as the best writers. Curiosity is king, and the way we learn how to create great stories is not necessarily a matter of intelligence, it ’s a matter of interest. You will learn how to break down complex information into content that is interesting, engaging and understandable, in order to inform and educate people about what’s happening in the world around them.’
