The 61st Medical Battalion is located in the Cam Ranh Bay Aea and the98th Medical Detachment is at Nha TranZ, The mission of the 61stMedical Battalion is to:

(I) Provide area medical service to units without anassiQeod or organic modical support capability.

(2) Supervise professional medical services of sub-ordinate units.

(3) Exercise custody of medical records ard renderreports on patients treated as required by current dir•ectives.

(4) Provido for the security of personnels, equipment,facilities and billets of all elements assigned or attached.

(5) Provide eommandoootl wad planning for allelements assiged or attached.

(9) Provide land evacuation support within its area ofresponsibility, utilizing ambulances of 418th Ambulance Company.

Lieutenant Colonel Robert 14 HlalI, 070358, MLdical Corpsassumed eonand as acting commander on 26 July and served as groupccamander for the remainder of the reporting period,

4. (FOUO) Mission. A new Letter of Instruction to the 43dMadical Group was published by the 4th Medical Brigade on 12 June 1966.Following is an extract of the letter which defines the Ceographicalarea of responsibility: "The Commandin, Officer, 43d Medical Group insupport of United States Army, Vietnam (USARV) and other Free WorldMilitary Assistance Force (FW,@F) located in Corps Tactical ZoneIL-South (CTZ II-S) which includes the provinces of Darloc, Kbanh Hoa,

Ninh Tnma, Tuyon Due, Qu•ng Duo, Lam Dong, and Binh Thuon."

This headquarters experienced no major problems in coord-iating support requirements with the ft Trancg Sub-Area Command of theUited States Army Support Command Cam Rah Bay.

The 43d Mzdical Groupprovided back up support for the 55th during July and continued toprovide Acro Medical Evacuation for all units in II Corps Tactical Zone.AIdical regulating between groups was monitored by the 44th Medical

Brigade MRO. No major problecs were encountered.

d. The 6th Convalescent Centor became operational on 15May 1966 with a total of 180 operating beds. On 17 July 1966 theoperating bed capacity w:ns axpended to 250.

e. Oporating beds of assigned medical facilities totaled1015 on 31 July 1966. Included was the 12th USAF Hospital (200 beds)for which this headquarters has regulating responsibility.

(1) A letter from this headquarters, datod 23 May1966, was forwarded to 44th Medical Brivaed requesting on IOE of theHq and Hq Det, 43d Medical Group. The W03 was a request for an in-crease of eight (8) enlisted spaces. Of particular importance 1- thiscommand are the requostcd spaces, two (2) todical records SpOeCialists(MOS 710) ad six (6) radio operators (MOS C5B). Action on thisrequest is pending.
