a. CSG Election Director Arlyn Reedi. Arlyn – election is over, praise Him. Results certified by UEC and on

website. Rackham, 7 open, 5 won, 6 and 7th had 7 way tie, falls to assembly to determine filling two seats. Sharon Hu, gets degree from Rackham, up to Sharon to decide if Assembly on Rackham or SEAS student. Those were major things in terms of results. Second thing, recommendations. Already being worked on, new online voting system, currently terrible. Better labels, people to contact for help, IT people. Also recommending election director orientation, briefed on rules, new advisor should attend orientation as well, SGC should be required to have weekly meetings, no school of environment listed on ballot, 48 hours rather than 24 for unofficial results. Compiled code updated, issues with language. Write-in candidates, shouldn’t be allowed to vote for bowl of potato salad. Thank you Jim, great working with you guys.

b. Professor Victor Lieberman i. Professor Lieberman – thank you for inviting me to speak. Not

intention to revisit resolution. Just want to present views excluded from being presented fuller understanding of Mid-East context. Ways resolution should not have been judged in my view: personal anecdotes, stories of Palestinian suffering, IDF or vigilante violence, genuinely moving but no more deserving than Israeli victims. Wrong

that CSG should support because brown people against white oppression. Most Israeli Jews are from African and Asian Indian lands, indistinguishable from Palestinian Arabs. Not useful mode of analysis. Stories about relative victimization on campus, who’s more threatened. Don’t help explain problems. Only way to judge is analyze central claims bout Mideast conflict and behavior on both sides. Israel primarily responsible for violence? Violates international norms? Current Israeli policies current obstacle to peace. Settlements serve no purpose…antagonizes world opinion. Larger question, why have policies gained traction. Jews offered to recognize Palestinian sovereignty 5 occasions. Claimed at once must withdraw, capital, settlement end, return of refugees…all offered to meet. Every offer rejected. Every rejected accompanied by attacks with declared intention of destroying Jewish state. Why this recurrent report to violence? Key Palestinian leaders rejected 1947 decision of UN that both have historic rights in Palestine. Rejected any Jewish claims to land…PLO charter…Hamas official position [reads quote]. Hamas today most popular Palestinian political movement according to polls. I sympathize with Palestinian sense of historical injustice, displaced from ancestral lands by intruders. Denying Jewish claims, Palestinians believe exercising universal right to self defense. Israeli conviction backed by UN that Jewish and Palestinian both have right sto exist. Israel no more willing to commit suicide than any other state. Every time attacked prevents as any state would do. Palestinian initiated violence and demands counterproductive, weakened cause, which creates bitterness and more attacks which inspires new Israeli counter measures. Easily demonstrated by look at history…would have had own state 80 years ago said no…70 years ago…used west bank to start second intifada…separation wall wouldn’t have been built, biometric identification at borders, other security controls…Hamas used Gaza to start 3 wars with Israel…not to blame victims, to see Palestinians as helpless victims is to deny Palestinian agency, incapable of rational choice. Always had many options in front of them. Instead of recognizing Israel and ending conflict, chose maximum demands and violence to improve positioning ongoing conflict leading o ultimate victory. Prince of Saudi Arabia…[reads quote]. Arafat refused to accept offer and launched suicide bombing campaign. Recurrent pattern explains current impasse on west bank. 2005 Israel left Gaza strip. Hamas sees power in Gaza and converted into rocket launching platform against citizens. Fears that

Page 3: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view · 2018-01-08Second thing, recommendations. Already being worked on, new online voting system, currently terrible. Better labels, people

they will repeat behavior chief reason reluctant to leave west bank. Gaza far from heartland but west bank directly abuts. Hamas would have tens of thousands of rockets for main cities and could invite Iranian troops to invade Israel. Polls, 70-75% Jewish Israelis say would get rid of west bank if militants agreed to stop attacking, Palestinians because of historic sense of injustice don’t reciprocate. Say ultimate goal is Israel’s disappearance in polls. Belief Israel has no peace partner drives support for west bank. No doubt Israel overreacted at times brutally, Lebanon 1982, to blame Israel primarily let alone exclusive for violence and occupation, blockade, to ignore completely historic roots f the problem. Consider claim that actions unusually harsh and bloody. Last 10 years Israeli forces killed 3500 Palestinians according to UN statistics…other countries behavior compared to Israel? To suppress local revolt Russia killed 200,000 Chechyns, India...Turkey…Saudi Arabia…famine and cholera…most unspeakable in Syria, Iran and Hezbollah and Russia and Assad killed 400,000 people and 11 million homeless. Chemical weapons, bomb hospitals, torture centers, all meticulously documented in part from smuggling of photographs. Contrast, Israel has no capital punishment even for terrorists, security services subject to constant judicial review. Done more to save civilians in war than others in history…[reads quote]. Could give 50 other examples of violence far more hideous…why CSG not pass against India, turkey, Saudi Arabia, all receive American arms, Lebanon, Russia, Iran, Burma, morocco, china? Growing American political lobby against Israel but not other countries. Little to do with objective Israeli behavior. Quest for political advantage. Anti-Israel lobby distorts history to fit pre-determined agenda. Same used to criticize Israeli democracy. Apartheid analogy empty rhetoric. Wall divides not on basis of race but of citizenship. Arab citizens of Israeli enjoy same legal rights as Jews, sit in parliament, cabinet, supreme court, universities, vote, affirmative action, public institutions. No remote resemblance to south africa. “political prisoners” in jail not for saying something but trying to kill. Flawed democracy but treatment of minorities of Israel much better than majority of Asian and African lands…most authoritative survey of democracy and minority rights around the world, ranked 167 countries fro democratic practices and treatment of minorities, Norway to South Korea, Israel 34, US 20. No other Mideast better than 57, almost all above 110. Why Israel alone being sanctioned? Gratuitous military violence better than 97% of

Page 4: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view · 2018-01-08Second thing, recommendations. Already being worked on, new online voting system, currently terrible. Better labels, people

countries, some proponents say maybe it’s true but they still do bad things. CSG asked to act in semi-judicial capacity. Apply uniform standards…resolution tactic in political campaign. Whatever UMDivest claims relation to BDS may be. Uses same strategy, rhetoric, goal sto other movements of BDS, claimed as national victory for national BDS. [reads quote]. Clearly CSG leaders sought other than withdrawal of money – isolate, demonize Israel, singled out from all countries of the world worthy of boycott from CSG. Surrounded by enemies, refused to commit suicide. Acted more humanely than innumerable countries facing challenges.

1. Lauren – listed a lot, you have a lot of feelings, appreciate coming back, don’t see how all statistics relevant to resolution at hand, nothing to do with violence on either side to that capacity, not anything it touches on, miscommunication, mistaken to be something to attack Israeli students on campus, no one wrote with intention to offend Jewish students on campus, why come back and throw emotionally appealing arguments in student faces in our faces when not the point of the resolution? A- you’re saying to address feelings of marginality of student in student body, not my understanding of the resolution, to divest from Israeli companies…point of my talk is to prove violence not Israelis responsibility, acted in humane reasonable restrained fashion. Arguments should be singled out seems defiant of mountain of evidence.

a. Lauren – could come back to write resolution to look into all violations, this is a spearhead for a greater issue, so pressing for these certain students, why Israel came to mind in writing of resolution, unfair to say resolution attacking Israel

i. Didn’t say attacking, said singling out, uniquely liable to criticism.

ii. Alex - Let’s get to the question? A – (Lauren) - I need you to chill.

iii. Alex - I’m asking you to be respectful –A - (Lauren) - I got it, relax

iv. Alex - Do not tell me to - – (Lauren) Anywaysb. Lauren – would you be comfortable writing…? A – over

100 countries, to divest from whole world unrealistic. Why pick upon Israel, 161st, makes no sense unless prior

Page 5: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view · 2018-01-08Second thing, recommendations. Already being worked on, new online voting system, currently terrible. Better labels, people

agenda, central point. Understand sympathy for emotional position, feelings separate from historical analysis from root of the problem. Cant judge international events on personal emotions, what’s actually happening in the world.

2. Brittney – will you be remaining for community concerns? A – if you think it would be useful.

ii. Professor Lieberman – don’t see as personal issue, so happens founder of SAFE took my course thought even-handed, did senior honors paper with me, mutual respect, strong personal relationship, these issues have nothing to do with personalities or feelings.

1. Yara – you said divesting from all countriesa. Ask laterb. Lauren – girlc. Lauren 1st warning, 2nd warning, 2rd warning

c. Rachel Hersch, Ali Rosenblatt, Isabel Baer, Elle Shwer, Andrew Watkinsi. Ali – not trying to prolong any more, had some unanswered unresolved

concerns about last meeting, more than resolution, things that were said and inferred. Not just about resolution. Spoke last Tuesday, some experience in arena more than rep, last summer at advocacy group focused on religious discrimination in educational settings, anti-Semitism from my own experience and that research as well. Show sup today, manifests itself. In general things that look like – accusing Jews of having too much power, institutional power, age-old trope, double standards laced within BDS movement, authors have said isn’t BDS, looks like BDS, sounds like, same arguments, brings in self-proclaimed BDS activist, has to be connected. Concerns with inconsistencies with what we were actually voting on. First told authors wanted vote for divestment, meeting on diag, said BDS by accident, then divestment, then committee, company, country, elevate student voices. Then told for all oppressions, to vote no form of racism, way in which it changed, to gain reps traction, concerning to me. Disrespect with people here as soon as resolution arose. Members of student government for 2 years. Phrase expect respect in um community, feel that did not receive nor fellow reps or community members received same respect regarded by motto. MLB both years, felt voice not respected by peers concerning resolution. Disagreed with premise but did best to listen throughout the meeting, didn’t interrupt, ignore, whisper, snicker. Can’t say same when I get up there . last year and this year, same respect not afforded t

Page 6: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view · 2018-01-08Second thing, recommendations. Already being worked on, new online voting system, currently terrible. Better labels, people

me or other members in room. Nervous enough, looked up saw reps whispering, rolling eyes, signs saying don’t silence me. Intimidated into voting no in the past. Signs against you speaking concerns some form of intimidation. Have to believe wasn’t listening to what they had to say, if they did…don’t understand how they could do that in a way to silence my concerns. As Jewish student was speaking from own experience, don’t understand how they could keep signs up while speaking my experience. Expect respect…what inflicts students on campus. Micro aggressions…leave anti-Semitism out every time we talk about this. Slipped past reps in this room. Unanswered questions to authors, still never found out if they understand anti-Semitism today. We as a whole don’t understand what it looks like today. Does anybody in this room understand what anti-Semitism looks like today. When will people start listening to us as Jewish students with concerns about anti-Semitism?

ii. Izzy – last Friday unveiling of grandmother’s grave. Ruth Baer passed away last year…shared stories, thought about how her life impacted mine. Reminded me last year after divestment vote nothing more important than to defend Jewish state of Israel…hope everyone can understand why intimidating getting up to speak, hurtful while I shared story of my family in holocaust and reading signs held up that read stop silencing me. Disagreement does not mean silence. Grandfather made it out, understood could happen anywhere anytime. Country to call home, secure, today gives me same feeling. Anti-Semitism exists. Rapidly on the rise in us and around world. Subtle, hidden in every word and action, not extremely overt that my family experiences during holocaust. Not litmus test for anti-Semitism. 10 year old cousin in France walks past…constant fear for lives. 70% French Jews concerned about harassment because of ethnicity. Hate crime risen globally. Resolution tied to broader BDS movement that seeks destruction of state of Israel. Speaker they brought in was local BDS activist, accidently said by safe members. Huff post, 45% increase of anti Semitic incidents on college campuses following divestment. Language used to describe Lieberman. Jews have control of power…anti-Semitic. Have to listen to students and reps when they say anti-Semitic. Story met with such disrespect, implying my story not worth listening to. Why okay with ignoring my family history and fears of rising anti-Semitism on campus and around world?

Page 7: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view · 2018-01-08Second thing, recommendations. Already being worked on, new online voting system, currently terrible. Better labels, people

iii. Elle – part of recurring problem. I don’t wan tot speak. Feel have lost, don’t wan to give up don’t want to talk any longer. Frustrated and disappointed, feeling like I have failed. To express to every person in this world how important Israel is. High number of Nobel peace prizes, 6000 startups including Waze, cell phone, flash drive, instant messaging, invented modern irrigation, flu vaccine, so much more. Resolution seeks to demonize Jewish state, double standard no matter history or context, solely responsible in this conflict. Is not and cannot be only country to blame, that’s where double standard exist and where I feel attacked. Hearing people laughed at me for speaking out for first time in my life. Other hand, did not react hen other people spoke for resolution want to know why I was not treated with the same respect. Need to compromise, realize emotions should and will be channeled into driving positive dialogue on campus. Let us discuss if anyone open to doing so. Acknowledge victory not a victory for anyone. Let us all do better.

iv. Rachel – sure everyone has felt frustrated to some extent. Double standard most frustrating to me. One of many purposes recognizing Palestinian students marginalization…picks out Israel and flaws, identifying as greater veil. Toxic and one-sided argument. Hostile campus climate following resolution, scared to walk on campus as Jewish student, stomping on one minority group to give another a voice is not a solution. Being silenced…held up mute signs, silencing another community. Denying professor Lieberman to speak was silencing our community non-student BDS activist and vice president to speak on behalf of resolution seems like power gradient to me. Not time nor place to voice concerns. Representatives to formulate opinions and vote accordingly, and only then be passed to executives.

v. Andrew – I’m pro-Israel. Support right of state of Israel to exist, was told I should not tie my faith to state of Israel. Told by non-Jews how to experience my own Judaism. As a Jew connected to Israel, forced to defend state’s every action. No other race or religion held to same standards. Anti Semitism manifests itself differently than it used to. Experienced acts of anti-Semitism, conflict compared to holocaust, stereotypes met with laughter and smiles. Inserting clause of intention made it such. Swastika appearing in same building. Stories of holocaust met with stop silencing us signs. Willingness to confront self-proclaimed Nazis…Jewish Americans targets of minority related hate crimes, members of this assembly thank la casa and safe members and

Page 8: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view · 2018-01-08Second thing, recommendations. Already being worked on, new online voting system, currently terrible. Better labels, people

not Mariel Setton for sharing stories. Questions everyone how voted yes must grapple with. Anti-Semitic principles that underpin…impact versus intent. Oppressed to determine what is oppression, regardless s of intent, despite safe and authors open to dialogue, concerns met with signs when being voiced. Nothing short of offensive. Asserted they weren’t involved. Safe’s constitution has BDS chair. [ensuring attempt towards progress with respect to BDS being made]. Attempts to distance seem factually incorrect, looked in the eyes and told they have no connection to BDS. Given countless opportunities to stand against…cautioned authors and safe they should not pass If they didn’t want connection to bds. National BDS posted movement is growing. Actions have consequences, this assembly emboldened BDS movement. Why didn’t it call for every country with human rights abuses…disgusted, fake coughing and sneezing, shocked. Student came to Hillel and insinuated members of Hillel support blacklist. Public petition with 19 professors passed around by safe. Framed as companies, confused. Decision met with joyful screaming and cheering, brought me to tears. Seeing supporters singing an dancing pain I have never experiences. Fell victim to false dichotomy presented. Lack of understanding of conflict and BDS. Simple and innocent yes or no? nuances shoved aside to maintain narrative. If I hurt anyone’s feelings I apologize. Fundamental misunderstanding of anti-Semitism, how it’s unfolding I front of your eyes, share experiences and I and others have had. Thank you fro listening.

1. Matt – do you believe voting yes anti-Semitic? A – (Ali) - not inherently, main concern things said throughout meeting, micro aggressions came up throughout meeting and process had blind eye, other isms we try to be so aware, mistake to not be more aware of what it looks like in this assembly

2. Nadine – appreciate sharing, clear that I spoke during community concerns instead of executive communications, wasn’t intent to abuse power, a lot of you are younger, aware other executive members have vocally supported stance on politics? A – (Izzy) concern is doesn’t take away influence, answering of questions about resolutions when directed toward authors, all compliant with rules, impact on vote itself. (Ali) – wasn’t here in past last year my experience, reason brought up because people argued against Lieberman speaking, activist not part of university allowed to speak, academics allowed to speak

Page 9: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view · 2018-01-08Second thing, recommendations. Already being worked on, new online voting system, currently terrible. Better labels, people

in past, in that dichotomy, I think that was issue. (Andrew) admire courage and strength for sharing perspective

3. Marzia – thank you, views about secret ballot vote, I think that was as disrespectful as other things like signs? A – last year voted open ballot, accountability measure, a consideration when electing people. That’s where accountability comes in. understand concerns for secret ballot, I was referencing intimidation tactics in secret ballot. Double standard. Wasn’t addressed when taking about intimidation tactics.

a. Relationship between ballot and voting that was hurtful?b. Motion to extend by 5 minutes; seconded; approvedc. Marzia – I think secret ballot had impact on vote and

some things said in defense of or against secret ballot? A – (Ali) arguments against just demonize one side versus another, my point is intimidation on both sides. Wrote in op-ed which we can share, lack of time.

4. Haya – aware of Jewish groups or safe making an effort to create dialogue? A – (Izzy) yes have been talking to SAFE and others (Rachel) resolution passed here last year making dialogue

5. Zoha – any actionable items to decrease divisiveness in CSG since resolution? A – (Ali) personally besides dialogues, redefining what anti-Semitism looks like, not taught and recognize more being Jewish, other prejudices learn a lot of time and how to avoid offending anybody, same not given to that. redefining in this space.

6. Jay – appreciate speaking, on behalf of self as rep, what can we do? A –

7. Motion to extend by 5 minutes; seconded; approved8. Answer – Ali – maybe could meet afterwards instead of talking

at if anyone wants to have conversation – Elle – if anyone ants to work with me, happy to talk, reach out all of us are

9. Matt – wasn’t on assembly last year, brief recap of resolution Eli authored? A – Eli – after last divestment vote, set up dialogue group. Resolution got funding for infrastructure for brunches we were having. Talking about privilege, power dynamics, narratives, helped.

10. Caroline – resolution about dialogues just for Jewish and Palestinian students? A – yes

Page 10: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view · 2018-01-08Second thing, recommendations. Already being worked on, new online voting system, currently terrible. Better labels, people

a. Consider opening up? A – goal was to start with just reps from both groups, felt like good understanding I beginning and could open, and think something that could and should happen to open up to others.

VI. Community Concerns a. Brittney – professor Lieberman here, appreciate but as social worker…if did

not name harmful underlying’s contributed to Lieberman’s accepting request to come here. Believed here not to educate but put back in our place. To remind us who is boss who gets what he wants including a 6 figure salary…apparently not enough to send words through messenger rub our noses…spent time reading as resolution. Wrote op-ed about being silences quickly given platform. Likened setting of meeting to OSU/UM rivalry match, made sweeping assumptions and statements about effort of supporters, assumptions about reasons pro divestment faculty didn’t support to speak. Individual citizen black activist and community organize. Sounded a lot like affirmative action opposition…removed because inclusions would have created different outcomes. Experience as black student…required to accept defeat. Reacting in any easy outside lines seen as indicator of entire community about. Inherently anti black told to stop playing race card and how far country has come. 30 years of taking up space…circumstances require me to acquiesce.

b. Kate, Shandria, Yara, Miriam, Victori. Kate – with BAMN, asking for csg support in resolution opposing

Richard spencer speaking at um. Asking csg to stand with overwhelmingly vast number of students, faculty, community, opposing decision to start negotiating Richard spencer to come on campus. About whole community of Ann Arbor. A lot of campuses have denied him, banned from 26 countries, nothing to do with first amendments. Not just hate speech. Everywhere he and his supporters have gone, accompanied with physical violence, Charlottesville. Safe venue…cannot be a safe venue. Event will not be limited to the event. March before event in Charlottesville with violent confrontations. Armed with shields and knives. Following day heather murdered and run over. University of Florida, supporters after event shot into crowd. No matter what if allowed to come, invitation to racist violence. Can happen, emboldening people to think they can get away with it. A lot said about ignoring him…he wants a successful event to recruit more people. Berkeley, shut them down every time. UM is second to Berkeley other campus that kind of battleground for alt right. Defended affirmative action program and spent a lot of money doing that here.

Page 11: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view · 2018-01-08Second thing, recommendations. Already being worked on, new online voting system, currently terrible. Better labels, people

Ridiculous and dangerous to hide behind oh we’ll get sued. Regents and schlissel don’t want him here but feel pressured by wealthy donors or something, want us to give them a reason to say no. a bunch of protests, actions all this week. Pressure university to be able to justify saying no to him. Got to be prepared to shut him down if he does end up coming. I’m Jewish and never again hearing about the holocaust has meant standing against all oppression internationally against racism and learning from our history and mistakes. People saying same thing about Hitler in 1930s. ignore him…he himself said Nazi movement crushed never been able to grow. How could holocaust have happened? Don’t feel safe because land carved out for Jews, I think it’s used by powerful nations to use Jews as way to control Middle East. However you voted on UMDivest, you have to stand against Richard Spencer. The swastikas are not drawn by Palestinians, they are drawn by people emboldened by Trump and Spencer

ii. Mara –I’m Palestinian, and it’s great that you feel safe with Israel, but how do you think that makes me feel? How do you think it makes us feel when we have to fight guns with rocks. We are having a walkout this Thursday. I’m from Pioneer High School; we have a lot of minorities, undocumented DACA students.

iii. Shandria – I was part of the protest at the regents meeting, they increased minority enrollment for first time since 2005. Got charges sent to my house. 6 banned from campus to this day. At same time president of university allowing Richard Spencer, Nazi to speak on campus. BLM/BSU march, guy attacks march. He was a Nazi. Get emboldened before spencer. Cannot allow him to speak here.

iv. Victor – spencer trying sharpen blade of Trumps racist movement in America. Probably Muslim person attacked first how it’s been since trump elected. There are people in Dearborn and Detroit who don’t want Richard spencer to be here. We would give him Detroit welcome wherever he goes. People all over Michigan should feel they can come here. We want those people to feel welcome here and they can come here. To fight for equality. Guy next to our table outside espresso

v. Motion to extend time by 3 minutes; seconded; approvedvi. Victor – organizing, constant presence, guy rolls up, played song about

Donald trump and make America great again. Should make them feel in fear of doing more than that. people like that should

vii. If you care about your community, friends, oppose…

1. Haya – groups targeted, Jewish people mentioned? A – yes. Not only about minorities, about everyone. Heather was a white female…everyone at stake.

VII. Executive Communicationsa. Anushka – happy giving blueday. Fundraising for innovate, pitch competition

for innovative ideas in public service. January launching competition with thousands of dollars at disposal. Divestment – some clarity around statement last Tuesday. On website and Facebook and twitter. Signed resolution with discretion. Please read statement and happy to talk about it. In addition tor resolution will include statement to regents, elevation to call on board annual investigative committee any investment tied to violation of Palestinian human rights without mentioning companies or countries. Companies invested in change over tie, process every year…should create annual committee investigating investments without specification of companies. Also addresses concerns by Jewish students on specification of Israel. I think fair compromise to elevate marginalized community’s voices and bring attention to issue. Richard spencer. Resolution on docket…agree should not speak at university because of violence and unsafe atmosphere for students and community members. Talked with SGC Will, portions should we pass would be sued by Richard spencer’s lawyers submitted to university in evidence. Small changes to make. Ongoing projects – funding menstrual hygiene products, developing data gathering mechanism and laughing in January. Statement amendment resolution passed, will b going to committee to talk about feedback on amendments. Please solicit support and submissions for innovate, unique opportunity, reach more people.

b. Nadine – divestment, many might not know hours Anushka put into deliberating and thinking, want to thank her for all work she did and as being great leader. Deserves thank you. Wanted to point out…asked question to speakers, if anyone wants to meet one on one have reached out to some, would love to listen and hear perspective. Projects, sent out link to sign up for campus affordability guide edits. Cutting bill suggestions. Caroline designed pages, needs people to read, come in for 3 minutes. Please sign up tomorrow.

c. Sujay – working on project with interns, could use a lot of help. College affordability…project seeking to document price increases and things like that. biggest cost drivers, how well financial aid office keeping up with that. negotiating room and board rates within RHA…backpack tags.

XII. New Business a. A.R. 7-023 A Resolution to Oppose White Supremacist Richard Spencer

Speaking at the University of Michigan and to Defend Our Campus Community Against Racism, Sexism, Anti-Immigrant, Anti-Muslim, Anti-Semitic, Anti-LGBT and All Bigotry and Violence

i. First reads1. Jason – day before break Schlissel announced begin of

negotiations with Richard spencer to speak on campus. Fascist, racist…Unacceptable. Nothing peaceful about ethnic cleansing or genocide. Said if safe environment…no such thing as safe environment. He advocates violence, his hate speech is violence. Wherever spencer goes violence follows. Charlottesville. Ran over anti-racist protestors, killing one and injuring many others. Cannot allow ourselves to bring violence upon our own community.

a. Eli – personally against but are you willing to make changes so doesn’t help him? A – yes

b. Marzia – address main reasons why we should have him on campus that were brought up? A- written after email sent out. Did say he wanted to make as safe as possible. Inviting him unsafe…His goal is to have successful event, recruit more members. Free speech…not issue of free speech. Banned other people from premises for advocating for affirmative action.

c. Jesse – do you believe if denied then won in court and allowed space any power then? A – of course being allowed to speak would be his goal but I think as student body need to present with united voice against him speaking here.

d. Haya – first amendment professor said different consciousness with this, said would not go and give fuel to his fire. If we deny him, goes to court wins, put something in that says if circumstances arise something about not giving him attention he wants? A – would consider researching but protest against…

e. Jay – says standing in solidarity on campus but doesn’t say about CSG? (Anushka) I present at regents meetings, I’ll be speaking at 12/7 meeting to oppose spencer being here

Page 16: umcsg.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view · 2018-01-08Second thing, recommendations. Already being worked on, new online voting system, currently terrible. Better labels, people

f. Zoha – add written statement csg could publish? A – I think that would be good

ii. Comments on how to improve1. Anushka – reading what Will emailed – current form more harm

than god, rewrite to say would feel and be unsafe. Citing Charlottesville and Florida gives support for arguments. Should focus on safety aspects but good chance university ends up in court, winning in court is golden ticket…content under current law is protected. Would enter this resolution is protected. Based on content…meanwhile citing violence would not create evidence…strongly believe as passed would do more harm than good. If time and date set more than supportive of condemning everything he stands for but at this time counterproductive happy to meet with authors. [end of reading]. If we pass resolution rejecting him speaking because of content of speech they will use that in lawsuit, so that not helping his attorneys. Should focus on bringing about violence and unsafe and that is why university should reject.

2. A.J. – MSU, OSU…MSU case went to mediator. That’s a win. Want to quote safety part, we know that can win in court whereas content part cannot.

3. Anushka – people have been saying if lose lawsuit and allowed to speak, better way to win is for safety reasons, if we lose lawsuit based on content of speech have no control over where and when he speaks.

4. Sujay – page 1 footnote 2 change. Jason Zhang at end, college of engineering not school.

5. Brittney – safety piece, rewording strictly to make about safety, include citations around emotional and psychological safety of students,

6. Marzia – argument protecting free speech, way to address regents to say we support free speech.

7. Jesse – careful to avoid wording or diction could be taken as personal attacks on him, name calling, generalizations, we all know why white supremacy is bad, focus on safety and not let get anywhere else or emotional

8. Jay – adding final resolved to send to proper administrators and seek sponsors from csg reps. Authors don’t have to be from csg.

9. Ali – suggest editing title to make based on safety

10. Kevin – a lot of evidence as to why it’s unsafe, focus on those claims and check links a lot of them don’t work right now

11. Daniel PPP – if you have comments more productive to come to resolutions committee rather than hash out in second or third reads

iii. Referred to resolutions committeeXIII. Old Business

a. A.R. 7-022 A Resolution Urging Compensation for Social Work Placements i. Second reads

1. Brittney – Erica and Miranda couldn’t be here unfortunately, based on comments on how to improve added whereas about global field placements. Clarified weekly hours worked about 16 hours a week. Whereas added about institutional equity programs, university of Oklahoma, resolved for international students to not impede international students’ ability to work.

a. Jesse – conversations with people in SSD, CAPS about understaffed, SSW allow for hours to come within university? A – it can, student placed at CAPS, some of most difficult to get compensated within university.

i. Seems framed around expenses for commuting and living so in my mind something could be looked at

b. Rachel – clarify maybe misunderstood, some stipends for transportation but didn’t cover all? A – depending on what scholars program might get payment I think only gerontology only $100 for whole semester but required to work in Detroit

i. Main goal to cover all transportation or compensate for time? A – both, first whereas…either provide stipends and pay if organizations can’t

ii. Anticipate out of proportion in other majors for time in lecture hall for learning and field placements? A – I think response would be by virtue student experience on campus, going to be learning in this space with credit hours and in-class time. Certain courses of study moving beyond campus space.

d. Rachel – understand where coming from, I think big thing to ask for and implications on other schools, I think good start would be asking for compensation for transportation and here getting credits in research either paid or credits? A – third resolved…paying university to work for free…work with registrar to waive costs

ii. Proposed amendments1. Haya – per credit hour tuition costs
