Match backgroundThe matchday two fixture between Juventus and Galatasaray AŞ is something of a rarity: they have not met in Europefor ten years but now both seek a first Group B victory.

• While Juve opened their group stage campaign with a 1-1 draw at FC København, Galatasaray were overwhelmed6-1 by Real Madrid CF in Istanbul – their joint heaviest home defeat in UEFA competition – and parted company withcoach Fatih Terim on 24 September.

Previous meetings• The sides have faced each other in two UEFA Champions League group stages, most recently in 2003/04 whenAlessandro Del Piero scored twice (5, 73) in Turin to give Juventus a 2-1 win after Hakan Şükür (19) had equalised.

• The teams at the Stadio Delle Alpi on 17 September 2003 were:Juventus: Buffon, Thuram, Ferrara, Montero, Zambrotta, Camoranesi (Tudor 65), Tacchinardi (Davids 45),Appiah, Nedvěd, Del Piero, Trezeguet (Di Vaio 78).Galatasaray: Mondragón, Bülent Korkmaz, F De Boer, César Prates, Hakan Ünsal (Tamaş 84), MertolKaratay, Hasan Şaş (Cihan Haspolatlı 66), Sabri Sarıoğlu, Ergün Penbe, Hakan Şükür, Fábio Pinto (Arif Erdem 80).

• In the Istanbul return, Hakan Şükür scored both goals in a 2-0 Galatasaray victory.

• The sides also met in the 1998/99 group stage with both games ending in draws, 2-2 in Italy 1-1 in Turkey.

• Juventus have played only one other Turkish opponent, winning home and away against Fenerbahçe SK in the1996/97 group stage. Defending champions, Juve advanced to another final but lost 3-1 to Borussia Dortmund inMunich.

• Galatasaray have not won in ten previous visits to Italy, drawing four and losing six. That September 2003 trip toTurin was their most recent outing; the prior fixture was a 1-1 draw at AS Roma in the second group stage in March2002.

Match background• Making their return to the competition last season after a three-year absence, Juventus reached the quarter-finalswhere they went down 2-0 home and away to FC Bayern München.

• The defeat spoiled Juve's record of six wins and five draws in 11 home European fixtures since Bayern won amatchday six encounter in December 2009.

• In the group stage the Bianconeri drew 1-1 with FC Shakhtar Donetsk in their first European game at the newJuventus Stadium. They followed up with home wins over FC Nordsjælland 4-0 and Chelsea FC 3-0 before a 2-0second-leg success against Celtic FC completed a 5-0 aggregate win in the last 16.

• Galatasaray also reached last season's quarter-finals for the first time since 2001, losing 5-3 on aggregate to RealMadrid who had also knocked them out at the same stage 12 years earlier. A 3-0 loss at the Santiago Bernabéu putthem on the back foot in 2012/13, with a measure of compensation gained in a 3-2 home victory.

• After losing away to Manchester United FC on matchday one they posted successive victories at CFR 1907 Cluj, SCBraga and FC Schalke 04, and have lost just three of their last 19 European away fixtures, winning ten.

Team ties• Juve coach Antonio Conte scored with an acrobatic overhead kick as Italy defeated Turkey 2-1 in Arnhem in theUEFA EURO 2000 group stage on 11 June 2000. Galatasaray assistant coach Ümit Davala played for Turkey.

• Roberto Mancini was confirmed as Terim's replacement as Galatasaray coach on 30 September. The 48-year-oldplayed for Bologna FC, UC Sampdoria and SS Lazio in his homeland and has had spells in charge of ACFFiorentina – where he replaced Terim in 2001 – Lazio (2002-2004) and FC Internazionale Milano (2004-2008) beforetaking charge of Manchester City FC from 2009 to 2013.

• Mancini oversaw two 1-1 draws against Juventus with City in the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League group stage. As acoach his overall record against Juve is W5 D8 L5; in Turin it is W3 D2 L2. He guided Lazio to victory against theBianconeri in the 2004 Coppa Italia final, winning 2-0 in Rome before a 2-2 away draw, and also knocked Juve out ofthe same competition in the 2007/08 quarter-finals with a 3-2 away win after a 2-2 home draw.

• Mancini's last cap for Italy came in a 2-1 friendly defeat against Germany on 23 March 1994; Conte had been calledup to the squad for the second time but did not play.

• Felipe Melo played for Juventus between 2009 and 2011, scoring four goals in 58 Serie A games. The previousseason he made 29 appearances for Fiorentina, scoring twice.

• Last season Chelsea FC became the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFAChampions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 thatfeatured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holdersand lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round to PFC CSKA Moskva.

Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and ManchesterUnited FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose.

• S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League havingfeatured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta isthe oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens FC in2006/07.

• Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 1-1draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011.

• Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSCAnderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute.

• Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently MarioGomez for FC Bayern München on matchday eight in 2011/12.

• Barcelona have finished as group winners on 14 occasions, one more than Manchester United.

• Barcelona hold the record for successive wins in the UEFA Champions League proper with nine, between 18September 2002 and 18 February 2003. RSC Anderlecht's 12 straight defeats (10 December 2003 to 23 November2005) is also a competition record.

• Five teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93),Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage) and RealMadrid (2011/12).

• Barcelona scored 20 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, equalling Manchester United's competition record from1998/99. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage, a tally matched by Real Madrid last season.

• Only RC Deportivo La Coruña (2004/05) and Maccabi Haifa FC (2009/10) have failed to score in a group stage.

• Dinamo Zagreb conceded 22 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, a new record that was equalled by FC Nordsjællandlast season. The previous highest total was 19, shared by MŠK Žilina (2010/11), Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FCDynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC (1995/96).
