Match backgroundTottenham Hotspur FC staged a fine fightback to earn a first-leg draw at Juventus, and will look to finish the job as theteams reconvene at Wembley.

• Spurs' prospects looked bleak when the Italian champions, through Gonzalo Higuaín, raced into a 2-0 lead withinnine minutes at the Juventus Stadium. Harry Kane halved the deficit, however, and after Higuaín had smashed apenalty against the crossbar on the stroke of half-time, Christian Eriksen's second-half free-kick ensured the sideswould travel to London level at 2-2 – although with the English club having two potentially vital away goals.

• Tottenham have by far the less experience of the two – this is just their second last-16 tie – but will not want forconfidence having finished top of a section including holders Real Madrid CF and collected 16 points, more than anyother team in this season's competition, including wins in all three home matches.

• Juventus finished second behind FC Barcelona in Group D but are in the round of 16 for the ninth time and haveplenty of recent knockout pedigree, having reached the final in 2015 and 2017.

Match backgroundTottenham• Having struggled at Wembley in Europe last season, Tottenham won all three matches at the stadium in Group Hthis time round, prevailing 3-1 against both Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid before a 3-0 defeat of APOEL FC onmatchday six.

• Before beating Dortmund, Tottenham had won just one of their previous five European home fixtures. They took onlythree points from their three home group games in 2016/17, losing to AS Monaco FC (1-2) and Bayer 04 Leverkusen(0-1) before a 3-1 victory over PFC CSKA Moskva on matchday six.

• Tottenham are unbeaten in their seven home matches against Italian opponents (W4 D3). Overall, their 16 fixturesagainst Italian teams have ended W5 D7 L4.

• They boast a strong record in two-legged ties against Italian opponents: W4 L1. The sole defeat was a 3-1aggregate reverse against ACF Fiorentina in the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League round of 16 (1-1 home, 0-2 away);they beat the Viola in their most recent game against Italian opposition, winning 3-0 at home at the same stage of the2015/16 competition to complete a 4-1 aggregate success; Erik Lamela scored the second goal.

• Tottenham have won all six of the UEFA competition ties in which they drew the away first leg, most recently that2016 tie with Fiorentina (1-1 away, 3-0 home). They beat RSC Anderlecht on penalties in the 1984 UEFA Cup finalafter drawing 1-1 both away and in London.

• Spurs have never recorded a 2-2 draw in an away first leg before.

• Tottenham's record in three UEFA penalty shoot-outs is W1 L2:1-4 v FC Basel 1893, 2012/13 UEFA Europa League quarter-final5-6 v PSV Eindhoven, 2007/08 UEFA Cup round of 164-3 v RSC Anderlecht, 1983/84 UEFA Cup final

Juventus• The Italian side's record in the round of 16 is W5 L3. Twelve months ago they beat FC Porto 3-0 on aggregate at thisstage (2-0 away, 1-0 home) having lost to FC Bayern München at the same stage in 2015/16.

• Juve opened this season with a 3-0 loss at Barcelona but are unbeaten in their last six games (W3 D3), qualifying forthe knockout stages thanks to a 2-0 win at Olympiacos FC on matchday six.

• Juve collected four points on their travels in this season's group stage to finish second behind Barcelona in Group D,picking up a 1-1 draw at Sporting in between the defeat in Spain and win in Greece.

• The 0-0 draw at Barcelona in last season's quarter-final second leg was the only one of Juve's six away matches in2016/17 that they failed to win, with five clean sheets and just one goal conceded to 12 scored. Defeat at the CampNou on matchday one ended a six-game unbeaten away run in Europe.

• Juve are on a seven-match (W3 D4) unbeaten run against Premier League clubs, winning their last three fixturesbefore this tie – most recently a 1-0 home defeat of Manchester City FC in the 2015/16 group stage.

• The Bianconeri's record away to English clubs is W3 D6 L12. Their most recent trip brought a 2-1 win at City inSeptember 2015, extending their unbeaten away run against Premier League sides to three matches (W1 D2); Juvehad lost their previous seven games in England.

• Juve's record in two-legged knockout ties against English clubs is W5 L8. They have lost the last five ties, mostrecently to Fulham FC in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League round of 16 (3-1 home, 1-4 away).

Head coachMauricio PochettinoDate of birth: 2 March 1972Nationality: ArgentinianPlaying career: CA Newell's Old Boys, RCD Espanyol (three times), Paris Saint-Germain, FC Girondins de BordeauxCoaching career: RCD Espanyol, Southampton FC, Tottenham Hotspur FC

• A tough-tackling central defender, Pochettino was a product of Newell's Old Boys in Argentina where he played withthe legendary Diego Maradona during his five years in the senior squad.

• He moved to Europe in 1994 to join Spanish side Espanyol and won the Copa del Rey in 2000, before joining Parisin January 2001. After a stint at Bordeaux, returned to Espanyol, initially on loan, before hanging up his boots in 2006having won another Copa del Rey. Capped 20 times by Argentina, whom he represented in the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

• Switched to coaching with Espanyol in January 2009, with the club lying third from bottom in the Spanish Liga;guided them to a tenth-placed finish. Under Pochettino, three further mid-table finishes followed before a slow start to2012/13 prompted his departure.

• Surprisingly resurfaced in England at Southampton in January 2013, succeeding Nigel Adkins; introduced a high-pressing, attacking style which helped the club keep clear of relegation trouble. In his first full season in charge, tookSaints to eighth position with 56 points – a new club record.

• Appointed Tottenham manager on a five-year contract in May 2014, and led the side to the English League Cup finalin his debut campaign, only to lose out to Chelsea FC. The following season, 2015/16, Pochettino's side were incontention to win the club's first league title since 1961 until a draw at Chelsea with two games to go; neverthelessfinished third to book a UEFA Champions League return, and finished a place higher, as Premier League runners-up,in 2016/17.

Massimiliano AllegriDate of birth: 11 August 1967Nationality: ItalianPlaying career: UC Cuoiopelli, AS Livorno Calcio (twice), Pisa Calcio, AC Pavia, Pescara Calcio (twice), CagliariCalcio, AC Perugia, Calcio Padova, SSC Napoli, AC Pistoiese, Aglianese Calcio 1923Coaching career: Aglianese Calcio 1923, SPAL 1907, US Grosseto FC, US Sassuolo Calcio, Cagliari Calcio, ACMilan, Juventus

• A creative attacking midfielder, Allegri started out in his native Tuscany with Cuoiopelli and then Livorno, hishometown club. First appeared in Serie A for Pisa against Milan in 1988/89 but played only twice that seasonbefore heading back to Livorno.

• Returned to Serie A after helping Pescara win promotion in 1992. The following term he scored 12 goals underGiovanni Galeone, the coach Allegri still considers his mentor. After leaving Pescara in 1993, had spells at Cagliari,Perugia, Padova and Napoli before hanging up his boots back in Tuscany with fourth division Aglianese in 2003.

• Moved straight into coaching at Aglianese, prior to taking charge at SPAL and Grosseto. In November 2008 he wonthe Panchina d'Oro (golden bench) as the third division's best coach having led Sassuolo to promotion.

• Had earlier been appointed by Cagliari whom he led to ninth place in 2009, winning the Panchina d'Oro again, thistime as Serie A's best coach. A bad run of results the following season prompted Allegri's dismissal on 13 April 2010 –although he had already done enough to earn a two-year contract at Milan.

• Allegri's first season at San Siro ended with his new club winning the Scudetto for the first time since 2004.Dismissed in January 2014 with Milan 11th in Serie A, that summer he was appointed to succeed Antonio Conte atJuventus. Allegri won the Scudetto and the Coppa Italia with Juventus in his first season, also taking his side to thefinal of the UEFA Champions League, and added further domestic doubles in both 2015/16 and 2016/17, when theyagain reached the UEFA Champions League final.

Competition factsUEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?• Teams have overturned a first-leg deficit to go through 40 times, including FC Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund,Leicester City FC and AS Monaco FC in the 2016/17 round of 16. Only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FCin the 1995/96 semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's victory against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of16 – has a side progressed after a home first-leg loss.

• The biggest losing margin a side has overhauled was achieved by FC Barcelona against Paris Saint-Germain in the2016/17 last 16, when they lost 4-0 away but progressed thanks to a 6-1 home success. That eclipsed the previousrecord held by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals, when they went down 4-1 at AC Milan but won4-0 at home.

• Twenty-eight ties have been decided on away goals, including nine where the triumphant team lost the first leg.

• In all, 28 ties have required extra time. Twelve have been settled by extra time alone: five round of 16 encounters, five quarter-finals including Real Madrid CF-FC Bayern München in 2016/17, the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelseaand Liverpool FC, and the 2013/14 final.

• Sixteen ties have gone to penalties, including seven finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2016. The firsttwo-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 victory over Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005after a 2-2 aggregate draw, still the only quarter-final to go to penalties.

• The 2015/16 round of 16 tie between Club Atlético de Madrid and PSV was the first to finish goalless after two legs.Thirteen have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Real Madrid CF's defeat of Manchester City FC in the 2015/16semi-finals.

• Liverpool FC (versus FC Porto) and Bayern (versus Beşiktaş JK) both won 5-0 in the 2017/18 round of 16, equallingthe knockout phase record for the biggest first-leg lead – Real Madrid's 6-1 victory at FC Schalke 04 in 2013/14 andBayern's 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in 2008/09, both also in the round of 16. Bayern eventually beatSporting 12-1 after a 7-1 stroll in the home second leg; that tie also featured more goals (13) over its two legs thanany UEFA Champions League knockout tie.

• Bayern hold the record for the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match havingbeaten both FC Basel 1893 (2011/12) and FC Shakhtar Donetsk (2014/15) 7-0 in the round of 16 second leg.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to lift the European Cup with three clubs (Ajax 1995, Real Madrid 1998, Milan2003, 2007). Bob Paisley (Liverpool 1977, 1978, 1981) was the first coach to win three times, a feat Carlo Ancelotti(Milan 2003, 2007, Real Madrid 2014) replicated.

• In 2014 Ancelotti also became the fifth coach to win the trophy with two clubs; Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983), José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004,Internazionale 2010) and Jupp Heynckes (Real Madrid 1998, Bayern 2013) had previously achieved the feat.

• In 2016/17 Real Madrid became the first team to successfully defend the UEFA Champions League trophy, withMilan (1989, 1990) the previous club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996),Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League finalas holders only to lose.

• Only two sides have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) andJuventus (1996, final in Rome). Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern werebeaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know?• Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in FC Barcelona's 7-1 triumph against Bayer 04Leverkusen on 7 March 2012, a feat reproduced by FC Shakhtar Donetsk's Luiz Adriano at FC BATE Borisov on 21October 2014. Eleven more players, also including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently CristianoRonaldo for Real Madrid on matchday six in 2015/16.

• Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record for a UEFA Champions League group stage with 11 goals in 2015/16, eclipsinghis own mark of nine goals in 2013/14, which Luiz Adriano matched in 2014/15 and Ronaldo himself equalled in2017/18. Lionel Messi got ten goals in 2016/17; Zlatan Ibrahimović (2013/14), Ruud van Nistelrooy (2004/05), FilippoInzaghi and Hernán Crespo (both 2002/03) managed eight.

• Messi's hat-trick against Manchester City FC on matchday three of the 2016/17 competition was his seventh in thecompetition, a record Ronaldo matched against Club Atlético de Madrid in the 2016/17 semi-finals.
