VALUING DIVERSITY Sylvester Neal, V.P. Kiwanis International
I believe we must work harder to make the Kiwanis experience more attractive to the
segments of our society that are under-represented in our clubs. If we are to effectively serve
the communities we represent, we must find ways to attract younger members, and members
from different cultures and backgrounds. We must be flexible and open to change, but at the
same time, maintain the high standard and ideals of our Objects and Core Values.
If Kiwanis is to truly become an organization of inclusion, we must demonstrate that we
value diversity. Our differences will make us a stronger organization. This is a modified
version of how a company defined it.
âValuing Diversityâ
This concept works at creating an environment in which every individual feels accepted,
respected, valued, and can contribute to the Kiwanis clubâs mission. It is more than
numbers. But rather, creating an organizational culture that supports the many differences
that exist in it and which allows full participation. Valuing Diversity is an attitude that
allows for differences in experiences, skills, pproaches, styles, and functions in the
organization. It is a concept that focuses on creating an environment of inclusion where
every memberâs needs/values are taken into account.
Wouldnât you like to be in this club?
***
You will find it easier to do a single, small piece of a large project than to start on the whole
job. -- Brian Tracy
When it comes to building clubs and recruiting members, letâs remember the old adage
about eating an elephantâŠour goals should be lofty, but do not need to be accomplished in a
single day. Keep your member recruitment goals front and center, and add a member at a
time.

KIWANISâŠ.. TOO GREAT TO BE GOOD By Governor Patricia Hansen
There are a lot of good things that we do as busy parents, grandparents, Kiwanians and
community membersâŠ.BUT do we do so many good things that we do not have time
for the GREAT things?
I believe that Kiwanis is a great organization. Through my membership in the
organization I have enjoyed association with some of the finest folks I have ever met,
experiencing first hand leadership and service opportunities that mark Kiwanis as a
great organization. In the midst of my Kiwanis service and participation I also enjoy
other volunteer experiences in church and civic related associations. Add to that job
and family obligation and pleasures (family) I am a busy girl. We are all busy people
and that is what makes us great Kiwanis members. They say âAsk a busy
personâŠand the job will get done!â
So, if I believe Kiwanis is a great organization, I must ask myself, â What makes
Kiwanis great and what am I doing to preserve that greatness?â
To quote Jim Collins author of, Good to Great âA great organization is one that
makes a distinctive impact and delivers superior performance over a long period of
time.â
Kiwanis can make a significant, distinctive impact on the communities in which we
are located. But do we ? Are we the organization that comes to mind first in the
community when someone thinks of a service organization? Do school administrators
speak highly of Kiwanis âSponsored Youth Programs as leadership development tools
in their school districts? Do we have waiting lists for prospective members? Do youth
leaders laud Kiwanis as a pivotal juncture in their lives? Are the things we do as
Kiwanis activities great or are we satisfied with good?
Ther are so many great Kiwanis clubs in the District. As great clubs you set the bar on
service to youth. You are making a difference in your communities and you are âthe
clubâ to be a part of. Maintaining your âgreatâ status requires constant diligence from
leaders and members alike. You doggedly preserve core values defined as Kiwanis
Objectives and yet you understand the critical importance of stimulating progress.
You take a look at âhow you do things, and never stop making changes to maintain
that greatness.
Is your club a great Kiwanis Club?
A great ClubâŠlives the Kiwanis Objectives.
A great ClubâŠput service to youth as its number one priority.
A great Club⊠continuously recruits great members.
A great Club⊠stimulates progress by making necessary changes to fit member
needs.
A great ClubâŠinvolves all members in Kiwanis Moment experiences.
I have said it before and I will say it again and again, we have enough members to do
the work that we do, but we do not have enough members to do the work that needs to
be done.
âIn 100 years, it won't matter what house you lived in, what car you drove, or even
what your clothes looked like. What will matter is that you made a difference in the life
of a childâ. - Dr. Forest E. Witcraft

UTAH-IDAHO DISTRICT FOUNDATION BOARD MEETING MINUTES Saturday March 20, 2009 at 2:00 PM
Marriott University Park Hotel Salt Lake City UT

Members present were Marvin Chamberlain, Bob Dempsay, Jim Terry and Gene Piland Others present were Past International President Dave Curry, Lowell Inkley, Pattie Hansen, Bill Mullins, Norman Taylor. Invocation by Bill Mullins Minutes of the August board meeting were not available so will be approved at the next board meeting. Marvin gave a report on the financial condition of the foundation. As per the times there was a substantial decrease in the mutual fund account. Motion to accept was unanimous. Because of a communication problem the Secretary was not present so the Secretary report was omitted. Pattie made a presentation on a possible fund raising appeal for the foundation. It was determined that we should follow the model she presented for use during this year. Final approval will be made at the August board meeting. All donations to the foundation will be reported and listed in the August Convention program and individual will recognized at that meeting. It was also discussed that we need a smaller award for contributions of $100 and that these contributions could count toward a Reed Culp medal. These will be brought before the board at the August Meeting for final approval. A short discussion was held on the Governor-elect for the next year and who the candidates might be. There being nothing else to come before the board the meeting was adjourned at 3:45 PM

THE HEART By Jim Terry, Human and Spiritual Values Chair
At our Mid-Year Conference in Salt Lake City our past International President of
Kiwanis Dave Curry was in attendance. He spoke to us about the Javet 7 heart. A
study had been done with those who had received one. One of the common things
mentioned by those who had the heart was that they didnât feel anything. Not
physically touching things feeling but feelings. That when a loved one came into the
room or a place of remembrance there was no feeling of love or peace, just the swoosh
of the value. So the question may be asked, âWhat is it about the heart that makes us
have feelings?â
Some recent research shows that when we experience heart-felt emotions like love,
care, appreciation and compassion, the heart produces a very different rhythm. In this
case it is a smooth pattern that looks like gently rolling hills. Harmonious heart
rhythms, which reflect positive emotions, are considered to be indicators of
cardiovascular efficiency and nervous system balance. This lets the brain know that
the heart feels good and often creates a gentle warm feeling in the area of the heart.
There are countless stories in the Bible, in literature and in songs that reference fear,
love, courage, anger, joy, sorrow, hatred that are ascribed to the heart. As the central
organ in the body, forming a focus for its vital action, it has come to stand for the
center of its moral, spiritual, intellectual life.
Some say spirituality and religion is basically the same thing. Others believe that they
are quite different. In any case, spirituality and religion can touch your being in a way
that little else can. In Proverbs it says a merry heart doeth good like a medicine and
Ecclesiastes say let thy heart cheer thee.
I think it is the heart that makes Kiwanians do the things we do. Many people today
have been conditioned not to give of themselves without asking, âWhatâs in it for
me?â indeed, people have an obligation to provide physical needs for themselves and
their families, and this requires them to barter and trade, either with physical goods or
with time and labor. But this makes the need to provide regular selfless service all the
more important. Opportunities abound in our communities; there is a great need for
playground equipment, books, reading to children, supporting our youth leadership
programs, safety programs and countless other projects.
Sometime we get too busy in life and opportunities by pass us when really all that is
needed is little more than an observant eye and a willing spirit. In addition to blessing
the lives of others, service blesses the lives of the one who is giving. By serving
others, people gain compassion and understanding. The benefits are enormous.
Service helps keep material goods and the things of lasting value in their proper order
and perspective. Material things will grow old, break and end up in a landfill.
Relationships, faith and love, all attributes strengthened through service, will last
forever.

KIWANIS RISK MANAGEMENT KORNER By Lori L. Bergsma, Utah â Idaho District Risk Manager
WHEN SHOULD A CLUB REQUEST A CERTIFICATE OF INSURANCE FROM
OTHERS?
Kiwanis Clubs need to request certificates of insurance FROM others when entering
into a contract with a vendor. This includes fundraising events involving outside
companies. This would include promoters, vendors and participants in unique events.
Certificates should include the liability coverage of not less than $1,000,000 and name
the club and Kiwanis International as additional insured. Certificates should be issued
on standard Acord form and evidence Workerâs compensation, auto, and liquor
liability coverage if appropriate.
Also, if your club does not have a Safety Coordinator, now is the time to appoint one!
For questions or more information about Kiwanis International insurance program,
please feel free to call Hylant Group Toll Free at 1-800-876-0361 or email me at
It is a pleasure to be of service to Kiwanis and I hope all your fundraisers are a safe
and prosperous success.

International Foundation's 2008-2009 annual club gift campaign is on the following
page.
Congratulations to Divisions 2 and 8 for having 100% of their clubs contributing to
the annual campaign this early in the campaign and Division 3 for having donated
more than $10 per member!
As of April 30th, our clubs had donated $9,295.00 to the 08-09 campaign; this equates
to $5.32 per capita and puts our district in first place on a per member contribution
basis among all Kiwanis Districts.
Per member contributions:
Utah-Idaho, $5.32; Southwest, $5.26; Kansas, $5.22; Malaysia, $4.94; Indiana, $4.81;
Capital, $4.47; Illinois-Eastern Iowa, $4.22; New Jersey, $4.16; Florida, $4.13; and
Alabama, $4.06 as of April 30th.
Utah-Idaho has already qualified for Five matching scholarships for both Circle K and
Key Clubs to be awarded next year.
If the remaining clubs send in their usual contributions, we will easily reach our
district goal of $6 per member in contributions and qualify for six scholarships again
next year.
With a couple large contributions that have been sent in this year, who knows but what
we might reach the $7 per member level and set a goal for other districts to match.
Will Lt. Governors copy the attached donation list to share with their respective clubs
and thank those clubs that have donated to this annual campaign.
Thanks for all your help!

INTERNATIONAL CANDIDATE BIOS, PROPOSED BYLAWS

and who you favor in the election.

KIWANISONE NAVIGATION LINKS CHANGING SOON
Resources for members on www.KiwanisOne.org are growing and being enhanced all
the time. Club Leader Tools and the Online EducationâCLE are great examples of
much-needed content and features. With a steady pace of introducing new features,
navigation can sometimes become overgrown and cluttered, especially on the
dashboard (home page).
Current navigation on the KiwanisOne dashboard needs a little housecleaning so that
we can add a few new, necessary items. Luckily, we have some duplication between
the main navigation on left (blue links) and the orange buttons on right that we can
pare down and not lose dashboard presence on anything.
The Web team will be implementing the following changes within about 30 days, and
we wanted to give members some notice and reasons for the changes.
In left (blue bar) navigation:
Convention 2009 link goes away in lieu of the Nashville button on right
Grow Your Club will change to Grow & Build Clubs so New Club Building
resources can be added
Online LearningâCLE link moves to the right as a new orange button
Partnerships link goes away and becomes a button on right side, too
International Foundation moves under About Kiwanis and becomes a permanent
bottom banner in rotation with the convention promotion.
This knocks our nav down from 13 links to 9 â much better!
For right-side orange buttons:
Convention and Login buttons will stay as they are
Learn, Grown and Lead buttons go awayâhowever, Learn becomes the CLE
button, Grow Your Club is already on the left side, as is Club Leader Tools.
Weâll create a new button: CLEâOnline education
Weâll also add a new button for Partnerships
That makes 4 buttons instead of 6âless clutter, plus magazine and Kiwanis-
family Store link moves up higher!
Thanks again to continued member feedback that helps us make improvement
decisions for online resources and information. Comments and suggestions to
HELP POTENTIAL NEW MEMBERS FIND YOUR CLUB
Once your club Web site is live on the Internet, please submit the URL (Web site
address) via e-mail ([email protected]) to our Web team for inclusion in the
Kiwanis International club locator (Find a Club). Include your club key number, club
name, city/state and contact info in case we have a question.
Upon review and approval, your club will appear in searches for Kiwanis clubs in your
area via the club locator on the public site. Your listing includes basic club meeting
information, your Club Web site link (if provided), an option for users to map your
club location in relation to the surrounding community and nearby clubs, and a link to
the membership interest form. This club locator is great for prospective members
wanting to find a Kiwanis club near their home or work, for analyzing club density in
certain areas for growth strategy, and for travel and interclub planning.

KIWANIS â A NAME ASSOCIATED
WITH DOWN SYNDROME FOUNDATION
Malaysian National News Agency
http://www.bernama.com/bernama/v5/newsfeatures.php?id=410180
PETALING JAYA, May 11 (Bernama) â In Malaysia, the mention of âKiwanisâ
would make people think of the center for Down Syndrome children.
Actually, the name Kiwanis originated from an American Indian expression, which
means, âwe tradeâ or âwe share our talents.â
Members of the Kiwanis Club are volunteers.
Among others, Kiwanis club members help shelter the homeless, feed the hungry,
mentor the disadvantaged and care for the sick.
They also build playgrounds and raise funds for research on children. The Kiwanis
Club of Kuala Lumpur (KCKL), in 1976, became the first Kiwanis club to be
established in Malaysia.
It was established by the then returning Ambassador to the United States, Tan Sri
Khir Johari who was affectionately called âBapa Kiwanis.â
PAGE 18
KIWANIS / DOWN SYNDROME FOUNDATION (Continued)
KDSF National Center Petaling Jaya
According to the administration director of the Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation
(KDSF) National Center in Petaling Jaya, Angie Heng, the establishment originated as
the KDSF Petaling Jaya Center on Sept 11, 1989 via the effort of the KCKL.
Located at No 59 on Jalan Gasing, the center started operations with two teachers and
15 children. It grew steadily over the years and in 1999, a next-door bungalow was
rented as the enrollment grew to 100 children and many more on the waiting list.
By the year 2003, the center had an enrollment of 160 children, 12 teachers and two
administrative staff. In 2004, the center moved to bigger premises, built totally on
public funding, at Sungai Kayu Ara in Petaling Jaya.
The new premises, located at Lot 1490, Jalan Jenjarum, off Jalan SS23/1, Taman Sea,
47400, Petaling Jaya , can accommodate classes for up to 300 Down Syndrome
children.
Its patron is Toh Puan Ena Ling, wife of former MCA president Tun Dr Ling Liong
Sik.
More centers set up across Malaysia
Heng said in 1991, a second Kiwanis Down Syndrome center was set up in Johor
Baharu (by the Kiwanis Club of Johor Baharu) with association to the KDSF.
More centers followed. The Klang center was set up in 1994, Seremban two years,
Melaka (1999) and Kota Kinabalu (2002) by the respective Kiwanis clubs.
Meeting the needs of children with Down Syndrome
According to Heng, the KDSF felt that the focus should be on children below six years
old to maintain the quality of education.
âChildren with disabilities should be exposed to the public as integration would allow
them to develop their potential better,â she said.
It is also to reduce prejudice and ignorance of the public towards people with
disabilities.
KDSF acknowledges the important role played by the families of Down Syndrome
children, said Heng.
âTheir participation is always encouraged. Each of the KDSF centers has established
its respective Parent Support Group,â she said.
She said, âParents are encouraged to continue teaching their children at home. Each
centre has an information and Resource Library which provides the necessary
materials that the parents can use at home,â she said.
Early intervention program
Heng said KDSF does not cater for all facets of Down Syndrome.
âKDSF only specializes on Early Intervention Program for children with Down
Syndrome up to six years old,â she said.
She said it is recognized that these children of age above six years old should continue
their education as provided by the Special Education classes provided by the
Education Ministry.
More information on the KDSF National Centre is available at www.kdsf.org.my.

This year's Small Business Person of The
Year Awards will have a new twist.
An award that usually goes to an
entrepreneur who has built a new business
from the ground up will instead go to an area
real estate agent who devotes his off hours to
helping his community.
Mark Bennett, an agent with Silver Hawk
Realty, divides his free time among his duties
as president of the local Kiwanis Club,
advising the Meridian Medical Arts Charter
High School Key Club on its fundraising and
organizing efforts, co-chairing the Meridian
Promise program, serving as vice president of
the Meridian
Leadership Class, and co-chairing the
Leadership Legacy project that raises money for the Meridian Historical Society.
Bennett admits to feeling "stretched thin" on occasions.
"People look at me and ask, 'Who are you today?' " Bennett said. "But I figure if
you're going to live in a community, you might as well be involved in it."
Meridian Chamber President Teri Sackman said community involvement is one of
the criteria involved in selecting the Small Business Person of the Year.
"For Mark, his overwhelming commitment was a big factor," Sackman said.
Other award winners include:
- Access Heating & Air Conditioning, for companies with one to 10 employees.
- Sterling Savings Bank, for businesses with 11 to 50 employees.
- Texas Roadhouse, for businesses with 51 or more employees.
The Friendship of Meridian Business Award will be presented to Meridian
Development Corp. for its work to revitalize the downtown area.
Other nominees included Bruce Altig of Biz Print, Trudy Dewey of Meridian
Wal-Mart, Countryside Mortgage, Port of Subs No. 127 and Meridian Red Robin.
Marvin Bodine, Meridian Veterinary Hospital, Sanitary Services Inc. and Idaho
Power will be honored for being chamber members since 1956.
