Kids for EliminateA year ago, the

Kindergarten teachers, students, and parents ofthe Corral Drive Elem-entary School were thefirst school in the worldto receive a ZellerAward. This was

achieved through a Kindergarten project ofmaking "Little Big Mac" cookies whichresembled hamburgers for a school-wideproject.

When the Zeller was presented to theschool this year in a school-wide convocation, the NEW Kindergarten students wanted to knowif they could raise more money this year to savemore mothers and children. One of the teachersapproached the principal this month and heapproved a cookie pre-sale. From the pre-salethey should have expected about $360, but thesale actually netted $525 for the KiwanisEliminate Project.

The lessons learned by today’s currentKindergarten is best said in the words of Witten,"So I went to the gym and they gave myteacher(s) an award. Then I said to her, 'Hey! Iwanna save a mommy and her baby, too!' So wemade all those cookies and people bought themand now... I did it. I saved a mommy and herbabies." Not bad for 6 years-old.

Thanks to Kindergarten teachersMelinda, Shaina, and Kara for the valuablelessons taught to these Kindergartners whichwill start them on track to becoming "outwardlooking" adults.

Better Health:Eat Great & Lose Weight

Author Mallie Levine says “The key tostaying healthy and slim is to make sure you’reeating enough of these micronutrients whichplay an important part in your metabolism, appetite and energy.”

In previous newsletter health articles, wehave already talked about macronutrients likecarbohydrates, protein, and fat for example. Butmicronutrients, that is vitamins and minerals, aswell as probiotics and prebiotics are just as

crucial. “They help you burn calories, regulateyour appetite and blood sugar, and keep yourenergy levels up” says nutritionist Karen Ansel.

Calcium helps build bones and it is also afat burning mineral. Obese people who consum-ed 1,200 mg daily via foods, lost more weightthan those who consumed only 500 mg. Recommended dose (from food) for women upto 50 is 1,000 mg; ages 50-71 it is 1,500 mg. Ranking sources from good to best are 1 oz.cheese (feta, cheddar), kale (cooked, raw), 1 cuplow-fat yogurt. [I lost my Internet due to the storm so Icouldn’t get the recommended daily amounts for men.]

Magnesium helps to control and keepblood sugar levels even. Spikes and drops resultin overeating. Magnesium is also “crucial forenergy and keeping your metabolism humming.” Daily requirements are from 310-320 mg. Goodsources, from low to high, are ½ cup rawspinach, ½ cup black beans, ½ cup cookedspinach, and 1 oz. of almonds.

Vitamin C is needed to make carnitinewhich is required to burn body fat. Low levels ofvitamin C have been associated with higher bodyfat. The daily requirement is 75-90 mg. Thebiggest benefits are seen from amounts greaterthan 500 mg. and even up to 2,000 mg. VitaminC is not stored in the body so it must be consum-ed daily. Good sources, in ascending value, are½ cup cooked broccoli, medium orange, 3/4 cuporange juice, and red pepper.

Vitamin D, also known as the “sunshinevitamin” because your body makes it when it isexposed to sunlight. This vitamin helps youstore fat and stay energized. Your daily require-ment is 600 IU. Again, listing sources from goodto best, they are 1 large egg w/yolk, 1 cupfortified milk, 3 oz. cooked salmon.

Iron helps to transport oxygen in your redblood cells which is critical for the brain andmuscles. Torey Armul, R.D.N. says “about 12%of Caucasian and 20% of African-Americanwomen have iron-deficiency anemia, which canleave you feeling weak and sluggish.” Your dailyrequirement is 18 mg. for women 18-50 and 8mg. for 51+. Good sources are 3 oz. beef and 1cup of beans.

Folate, or vitamin B, helps to make redblood cells, keeping up your energy, as well askeeping your organs working well. Your dailyrequirement is 400 mcg. Good sources are

U.S. President John F. Kennedy said “If wewho have, cannot help those who have not, then we cannot help ourselves.” Kiwanianshave been helping themselves for ninedecades by helping others. Our motto, WeBuild, refers as much to ourselves as to ourcommunities. We become men and womenwhen we help others.

spinach (½ cup cooked, 1 cup raw), and ½ cupenriched spaghetti.

Probiotics & Prebiotics – Hellie Levinestates “even though they are not micronutrients,pro- and prebiotics deserve an honorablemention for their indispensable part in main-taining levels of good bacteria that may help youburn fat and keep blood sugar levels stable. Your daily requirement is one probiotic richfood daily. A good source is fermented foodslike sauerkraut, yogurt (live or active cultures). Prebiotics support probiotics by feeding thosehealthy bacteria. Good sources are leek, onion, banana, asparagus, and garlic.

Potassium, the final micronutrient, helpsto protect your muscles from fatigue during apower workout. [It doesn’t have to be in thegym; it can be strenuous yard project too.] Yourdaily requirement is 4,700 mg. with fruits andvegetables being the major sources. Ranked inorder some suggestions are 1 cup raw broccoli,1 cup low-fat milk, 1/4 cup dried apricots, 1 cupcantaloupe, one sweet potato, 1 cup cookedbroccoli, and 8 oz. yogurt.

Trivia: 12 vs.21Yet another reason dogs are man’s best friend, courtesyof new research from the Centers for Disease Control andPrevention.

After following more than 600 boys andgirls, ages 4 to 20, for a year and a half, startingin 2012 the center found that, of those who hada dog, only 12% showed signs of anxiety.Among the group that did not have a pooch,21% did. Dog owners already know the joys of

a four-legged family member, but the studyresearchers noted that having a pup around thehouse actually lowered levels of stress hormonecortisol.

Another interesting fact, this from theHenry Ford Health System. Twenty-eight per-cent of people said that knowing cigarette smokewas harmful to a pet’s health, made them moremotivated to quite.
