have been given the opportunity to be taughtthe art of origami by the master himself.Sipho Mabona, a Swiss origami artist, to-

gether withWoolworths has made this initi-ative possible. As part of the 2014 WooliesBack to School campaign, the retailer decid-ed to partnerwith internationally acclaimedorigami artist Sipho to create bespoke art-works for an ad campaign that centresaround safety features, and the unique inno-vations, that make their Back To Schoolrange different.Sipho has been creating paper airplanes

since the age of five and after 15 years of fold-ing paper planes, he ran out of designs andturned to origami for inspiration.

ShapesHe remembers when he was small their

landlord always use to tell his mom that ifhe doesn’t stop throwing airplanes out of thewindow, then he will have to evict them.Now aged 33, his styles include intricate

representational designs to abstract geomet-rical shapes. Sipho who’s actually a teacher,said while he was studying he was gettingreally bored in class. Most of the time hewould rather sit and make different kind ofshapes out of paper.“Origami is an art that relies heavily on

the imagination of the beholder. Childrenhave a wonderful imagination, so it’s beengreat to work on something for children,”said Sipho.

TherapeuticThiswas nothing new at all to the learners

from Wesbank Primary 1 School. KyokoMorgan teaches origami to the learnerstwice a week. She says: “It’s very therapeu-tic for the kids. While you are busy workingin class a child will start opening up abouttheir circumstances at home.Which usuallyaren’t such pleasant things to listen to.”Sipho says thathewants to spreadorigami

to other places especially to underprivilegedplaces where people can see that you can ac-tually make something out of nothing. “It is

a privilege for us to be able to bring such auniqueart form to learners inSouthAfrica.”“Origami is an interesting and specialised

skill that embraces something as basic as aflat piece of paper and turning it into some-thing spectacular, of high value. There arevery few people as skilled as Sipho so learn-ing from him is a great honour,” said FredBenistant, creative director at Woolworths.

Alcohol abuse is the main contributing fac-tor to road accidents.

Richard Coleman, media spokespersonfor traffic services for the City of CapeTown, says everydriverhasa responsibilityto be safe on the roads if they drink any alco-hol and they are planning to get on the road.

“If you have used any substance thatcould affect your driving ability then letsomeone who has not, drive your vehicle.If no one is available then call one of thecompanies that provides a lift service,” hesays.

In South Africa, the legal limit when driv-ing is a blood alcohol count of 0,05 gramsper100 ml.

In the case of a professional driver, it is0,02 grams per 100 ml of blood.

In literal terms this equals two thirds ofa beer or spirit cooler with 5 % alcohol con-tent; 75ml of red orwhitewine perhourwithan alcohol content of 12 % to 14 %; and upto one 25ml tot of alcohol per hour for whis-key or brandy drinkers. Two drinks in onehour will more than likely put you over thelegal limit.

Coleman adds that people should obey therules of the road and also, not use a cell-phone when driving.

“Watch out for pedestrians and cyclists.The rule is simple: Do not drink and drive,”he said.

According to Lieutenant Colonel AndrèTraut, spokesperson of the South AfricanPolice Service’s media office, the office isnot in a position to provide any informationon the subject of drunk driving due to themoratorium on the release of statistics aswell as the fact that culpable homicide casesare not categorised as being drunk drivingrelated.

Nevertheless, Warrant Officer WayneTheunis, spokesperson for the Goodwood

police station said people under the influ-ence of alcohol are arrested daily.

Assaults“We constantly have operations in the ar-

ea. Abusing alcohol often leads to seriouscrimes and is a huge problem in our city.

According to our records we have re-ceived complaints about assaults, robberiesand domestic violence originating from theabuse of alcohol,” Theunis said.

He added that even cases of suicide havebeen reported when the person was underthe influence.

“Oftenpeoplewhoareunder the influenceare easy targets and women are raped. Theyalso meet the wrong kinds of people at barsand clubs,” he added.

Theunis said that in the coming holidayseason the Goodwood police will take on ano-tolerance stand on the abuse of alcohol.

“We will bring in more forces to assist uswith this,” he said.

According to the Automobile Associationof South Africa (AA) the crisis on South Af-rica’s roads demands a tougher approach.

The AA continues to lobby for the bloodalcohol limit to be brought in line withworld standards.

“The AA has for some time proposed thatthe 0.05 % limit be reduced to 0.02 %,” saysAA spokesperson Graeme Scala.

“This allows some leeway formedicationsthat contain alcohol, but still emphasisesthat one alcoholic drink puts you over thelimit. A blood alcohol limit of 0.02 % meansthandrinking even one beer (4%alcohol pervolume) will put an individual over the lim-it.”

New Life Community Projects in Uitsig ison a mission of making children a positivepart of their community.

This initiative in the area is part ofgroundbreaking work of psychologist Pro-fessor Gerrie Smit, currently the executivedirector of the organisation.

He has worked with communities in needfor many years and his particular focus ison children at risk, drug abuse, out-of-school youth and street children.

Smit is also currently a member of an in-ternational research group investigatingfamily violence in impoverished communi-ties and also heads a project aimed at allevi-ating poverty in high-risk communities.

While he visited the site last week hepointed out that New Life CommunityProjects has been active since 1996.

“Our other project is in Beaufort Westand the focus of this programme is on vul-nerable families and children at risk for notgoing to school, those that dropped out ofschool or living on the streets,” he says.

“The project operates from communitybased container facilities and communitybased “home schools” for children that areout of school, identified through street out-reach work on the streets of these communi-ties.

“These home schools are run by trainedwomen from the community in their homesto provide educational and therapeutic sup-port for children and their families, to en-sure sustained school attendance and posi-tive family life.”

FamilySmit also explained that another focus

was on strengthening mother-child attach-ment via therapeutic interactive videoguidance, interactive involvement of fa-thers and other family members to preventchildren from leaving the family and drop-ping out of school.

“It is about giving vulnerable familiesand children access to therapeutic and edu-cational support on a 24-hour basis, run bycommunity members themselves.

“The project is based on principles ofgood practice that will ensure the activitiesare relevant and effective for the target pop-ulation.

“An essential element is the understand-ing that a positive and caring family andcommunity environment is essential in de-veloping self-esteem and a sense of belong-ing in children. KuilsRiverPrimaryhas opened their heartsto women who have been affected by breastcancer.They hosted a Pink Day to make learners,

educators and people in the community

aware of this illness.The whole initiative behind the event was

to help breast cancer patients to get trans-port to and from the hospital to receive ade-quate breast cancer treatment.They managed to raise R4 505 on the day

and learners each had to bring R5 as a dona-

tion.The proceedings will go towards the Ty-

gerberg Hospital Breast Clinic’s TransportFund.Prof Justus Apffelstaedt, head of the Ty-

gerberg Breast Clinic said: “Many of our pa-tients have to do with less than R500 permonth and transport to Tygerberg oftencosts R150 for a single visit. The choice be-tween having enough to eat for the family

and transport for therapy is stark.”Dr Karin Baatjes who works with Apffel-

staedt also visited the school and had a talkwith the staff members.BeaulaineNicolaai, a teacher atKuils Riv-

people were fined for illegally dis-charging fireworks. Three inju-rieswere recorded in this area, in-

cluding a four-year-old boy whosustained burn wounds to his lefthand as a result ofmalfunctioningfireworks. Officers also confiscat-ed several bottles of alcohol.“It is impossible for the city’s

I stay near Eikenfonteinstation. From my house I haveto take a close to one hourjourney, on foot, throughScottsville, one of the morenotorious suburbs in Kraaifon-tein. Yet my house is in a fiveminute, direct line from Eiken-fontein station. The bridge atEikenfontein station is com-pletely blocked off by fencing,which does not allow travellersaccess from one side of therailway line to the other, exceptvia Scottsville. A danger mosttry and avoid. Yes and the sadpart is that it’s the sickly, aged,infirm and children who utilisethe holes in the fences.

Simple solution, build bridgesand subways or redesignexisting bridges to make itsafer to cross lines.

I was involved inthat accident where the trucktransporting the newspapers hitmy car first, overturned andthen hit a few more vehicles infront of me.
