WESBANK: HANDLING POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS

Continuous gang violence in Wesbankand the traumatising effect it is havingon children is a great concern. This

was outlined in a statement written by vol-unteers of the community-based organisa-tion, the Centre for Justice and Crime Pre-vention (CJCP).

CJCP support worker Erica van der Heev-er, shared the statement via email with Ty-gerBurger this week.

She says they are concerned that violencein Wesbank causes post-traumatic stressamong a number of children, and that theyoungsters are struggling to cope with theeffects of violence.

“Due to the constant shooting and vio-lence taking place in the area, there was aneed to intervene with our young childrenattending our weekly children’s club,” Vander Heever said.

Several children have also fallen victim torecent gang-related shootings. Two girls,aged 2 and 5 years old, were shot and wound-ed in the last two months. A boy (13) was alsoshot dead last month in a suspected gang-re-lated incident.

“The shootings in the area poses a greatconcern and often people are not aware ofthe traumaand the effect it has onone’s bodyand psychological wellbeing,” says van derHeever.

Assessing the effects“The children are put at risk because they

are not always able to make sense of whatis happening and it impacts on their abilityto function and cope,” she explained.

The children attending the club are be-tween the ages of 5 and 12 years old.

Van der Heever says their symptoms in-

clude having difficulty sleeping, an inabilityto concentrating, having nightmares and in-creased levels of anxiety.

“The CJCP made contact with The Trau-ma Centre in Observatory to assess the chil-drens’ emotional wellbeing.”

Within a controlled and supportive envi-ronment, the children were then free to ex-press themselves.

“The session gave the children an oppor-tunity to share their emotions and discussways to manage their safety better,” shesaid.

Building partnershipsAlbertFritz,WesternCapeminister for so-

cial development, says:“The Western Cape is affected by a violent

gang culture which not only terrorizes someof our communities, but also peddles drugsinto the area.

“This causes serious social problems,which has necessitated our response as theWesternCape local government to be coordi-nated in a whole-of-society approach.”

He said key to this approach is buildingpartnerships within all spheres of govern-ment,NGOs, civil society, the private sector,and individuals.

Ewald Botha, the spokesperson for DanPlato, provincial minister for communitysafety, said that the safety of the youth in theprovince is of great concern to the minister.

“The community of Wesbank has beengreatly affected by the deaths of young peo-ple or people from the community being ex-posed to violence.

“From a community safety point of view,minister Plato believes that a ‘whole-of-soci-ety’ approach is necessary to increase safetyin our province. This relies on meaningfulpartnerships being forged,” Botha said.

somakes childrenmore open to experimen-ting with drugs and alcohol, as a way to ‘de-al’ with the pain.“It is therefore vital that you seek profes-

sional help. Assistance could be obtainedfromyour local community health centre ortrauma centre,” Van der Heever suggested.Botha said: “Active parenthood has innu-

merable facets which no government canreplicate or even enforce.“A parents’ role is being a rolemodel for

Gang violence in Kleinvlei has escalatedsignificantly over the past few weeks, thepolice have warned.W/O Annacletta Mothoalo, spokesperson

for the Kleinvlei police says they want thecommunity to be aware of the increase ingang-related shootings in the area.“The hotspot is Spandau,”Mothoalo said.She said there have been fights between

rival gangs in the area, but could not con-firm which gangs are involved.“It’s been going for some time now. It was

quiet for a while, but then the violenceflared up again,” she said.In the most recent shooting incident, a

three-year-old boy was shot and wounded.The child suffered a graze to the head last

Thursday in Park Lane, Spandau.Four cartridges were found in the street,

with one also found inside the boy’s house.The childwas taken to theTygerbergHos-

pital for treatment, Mothoalo said and acase of attempted murder is being investi-gated.The police are also investigating a mur-

der case following the death of 19-year-oldAdrian Abrahams who was shot dead twodays earlier in the same street.“According to the residents, they heard

six to eight shots fired.They saw the victim fall to the ground. He

was shot in the lower back,” Mothoalo said.Adrian died at the scene.Earlier that day, a 30-year-oldmanwas al-

so shot at in Anemore Street, Kleinvlei.However, he survived the attack after be-

ing shot and wounded in the stomach.“He sustained one gunshot wound to his

left thighand two tohis stomach,”Mothoalosaid.A Congolese national was also fired at on

the same day at a barber shop in KeeromStreet, Kleinvlei.“The suspect pointed at the complainant

with the firearm, fired two shots butmissed,” Mothoalo explained.No arrests have yet been made.“We want the community members to

keep the children indoors when shots arebeing fired.”She warned people to not go out into the

streets when shooting incidents occur.“Residents must also try to help us with

information to bring these criminals tobook. With their help we can get more con-victions.”“The public must come out and assist us

with any information,” she urged.The police have also confiscated several

firearms over the past few weeks.To address crime in the area the police –

alongwith communityNGOs, churches, theCommunity Police Forum (CPF) and neigh-bourhood watches – have started a multi-sectorial task team.“We will focus on the youth who join

gangs. We have noticed that some of thelearners in the area take weapons withthem to school.“The gangs recruit these youngsters,”

Mothoalo said.

Kleinvlei police warns ofgang hotspot in Spandau

The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanita-tionDepartmentwill be conducting its annu-al water service quality survey for the nextthree months.The intention of the survey is to indicate

to the City the level of service satisfactionamong its communities, aswell as the respec-tive servicedisciplines that require improve-ment.Devnomics (Developmentnomics) (Pty)

Ltd. has been appointed to conduct the re-search survey in eight districts across thecity, namely: South Peninsula, Tygerberg/Bellville, Khayelitsha, Helderberg/KuilsRiver, Mitchells Plain, Kraaifontein/Blaau-wberg, Central Cape Town and Klipfontein,to be concluded in November 2014.The survey will be conducted in two ways

– either telephonically where participantswill be interviewed over the phone, or face-to-face by survey staff who will be visitingthe respective survey areas. The survey sam-ple will include 1 000 formal settlement resi-dents, 600 informal settlement residents and300 businesses. They will also assess theamount ofwater that is used on these premis-es.“The city fallswithin awater scarce region

and this exercisewill provideuswithabetterunderstanding of where we can continue to

improve on our services.Furthermore itwill equip theCitywith the

necessary information on water consump-tion patterns and behaviour,” said ErnestSonnenberg,maycomember for Utility Serv-ices.This survey forms part of the Water and

Sanitation Department’s customer servicecharter, ensuring that the City continues toprovide a top quality service and product toits residents.“We want to remain the best water service

provider in the country. This can only beachieved by working together with our resi-dents and through ongoing dialogue. Sur-veys such as this one assist us in continuallyimproving our services and in refining ourprocesses. Furthermore, it may assist us insaving more water and it puts the customers– our residents – at the centre of all our ac-tions,’ said Sonnenberg.The survey staff will wear the required

identification tag containing the City’s logo,a photo of the surveyor, and the project de-tails, in order for them to be granted accessto thepremiseswhich formpart of the surveysample.Sonnenberg requested the residents in the

survey areas to participate as it will assistthe City in providing a better service.

dood toe haar motorfiets op die hoek vanVoortrekkerweg en Bothastraat in Good-woodmet ’n bakkie gebots het. Sy het by diehospitaal aan haar wonde beswyk.Groot groepe mense van verskeie motor-

en motorfietsklubs het hul laaste eer kombetoon aan Marlize, wat in straatrenkringeas die Hoonigan bekend gestaan het.Die oorheersende sentiment was dat haar

dood ’n groot verlies is vir petrolkoppe, soosmotor-geesdriftiges ook bekend staan.Meeras 500 mense het die kerk volgepak, metsommiges wat moes staan omdat daar nieplek was nie.Die oggend van die diens het lede van die

motorklub waarvan sy ’n stigterslid was,die VWMKII Owners Club, ’n konvooi voorhaar ouerhuis gevorm.’n Marlize-kenteken, IB6UB9, was op die

The National Lotteries Board (NLB)would like to invite qualifying organisa-tions which support the development ofsports at grassroots level to apply for fund-ing, says Charlotte Thabang Mampane,CEO of the NLB.The scope of the funding programme is

in line with government policy to supportall sporting codes in South Africa.The NLB allocates a total close to R2 bil-

lion each financial year to various quali-fying organisations covering all three sec-tors including charities, arts and cultureorganisations and sporting entities.“We would like to take this opportunity

to encourage all interested schools andclubs to forward their application to the

NLB as early as possible,” saysMampane.“We would also like to reiterate the fact

that annually the NLB receives requestsfor funding amounting to more than R70billion, a figure that is well in excess ofthe funds available for distribution.”The NLB will give preference to sports

clubs and no-fee schools (Quintile 1,2 and3) in poor, previously disadvantaged andrural communities that support capacitybuilding (training of coaches and techni-cal officials), universal access to facilitiesandprovision orupgrading of access facil-ities for people with disabilities.Applications forms are available at the

The Athlone School of the Blind in Bel-lville South may soon be able to pro-vide some tasty fruit platters to the

community.This is because they hosted some Arbor

Week celebrations last weekwith help fromKirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.Roleen Ellman, Deputy Director: Biodi-

versity Education and Empowerment Di-rectorate of the SouthAfricanNational Bio-diversity Institute (SANBI) at Kirstenboschexplained that the project kicked off lastweek as part of their awareness-raising pro-gramme.“Having planted an indigenous garden at

the school for Mandela Day earlier thisyear, we extended our relationshipwith theschool to Arbor Week,” she said.“Every year, the Department of Agricul-

ture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) pro-vides trees to a large number of organisa-tions for Arbor Week.The trees planted yesterday were part of

the batch of trees we received from DAFF.“An earlier site visit to the school and dis-

cussions with the teachers led to 10 fruittrees and 10 indigenous trees being plant-ed.”Roleen also pointed out that the staff en-

joyed spending time with the learners.“The team from the Kirstenbosch Garden

included two staff members from our direc-torate as well as a number of staff memberswhowork directly in various sections of theGarden.”

While the latter staffmemberswork dailywith the propagation, planting and mainte-nance of plants within the garden, theyhave never previously had the opportunityto plant within a community context.“All of them thoroughly enjoyed the expe-

rience which was made exceptionally spe-cial by the fact that, although the learnersare sight-impaired, they succeeded in plant-ing the trees.”–She added that in all circumstances edu-

cation and empowerment is central to theirwork.“We always teach the participants how to

plant correctly.The learners and teachers enthusiastical-

ly helped the Kirstenbosch Garden staffmembers when the first set of trees wereplanted and they were shown the correctmethod to plant trees.They then stepped back as the learners

and teachers planted the second batch oftrees – only providing guidance as andwhen it was needed.“Each tree was labelled by one of the

teachers as belonging to the group of learn-ers who planted them.“This was the start of the process where-

by each group of learners will assume re-sponsibility for the care of their trees.“We are hoping that the 10 orange trees

will grow quite quickly and allow the learn-ers to literally enjoy the fruits of their la-bour. The species of indigenous trees plant-ed are well suited to the conditions of theCape Flats and should therefore grow welland eventually not only provide shade, butalso contribute to the school’s green envi-ronment.”

Emerging jazz singers are called upon to en-ter GrandWest’s sixth annual open mic jazzsinging competition.The top performer in this year’s contest

Laying the bricks of successViwe Matolweni of Dunoon is not only amaster builder, but also the only femalebricklayer apprentice in the City of CapeTown sharing her skills with at theWestla-ke Campus of the False Bay College.The City has a group of 23 apprentices

participating in a bricklaying apprentice-ship at the college and the only woman inthe group has outshone her colleagues.She was recently recognised as the best

student at the college’s annual awards anddiploma ceremony. Viwe is a wife, motherand a bricklayer of note.She says she always wanted to be in con-

struction somehow.“I often looked at buildings and other con-

structions. I wondered how they did it andI knew it was what I wanted to do,” says Vi-we. Although it’s hardwork, she enjoys eve-ry moment of her job in the Transport divi-sion forCapeTownDirectorate, holdingherown with her male colleagues.“It can be very tiring but I have a suppor-

tive husband. Some evenings he takes overthe cooking and sees to our four-year-oldson. When people hear what I do, they tell

me it’s not a job for a woman. I’m provingthem wrong,” she laughs.The City’s mayoral committee member

for corporate services, Xanthea Limberg,said the City was living up to its strategicintent ofmakingCape Town an opportunitycity and providing work and learning op-portunities.“The City works hard to provide opportu-

nities to women, including our targeted ap-prenticeship and bursary programmes. Inthis way, we are making progress possiblefor our residents – together,” says Limberg.The City has awarded 953 bursaries to fe-

A campaign to promote medical male cir-cumcisionhas been steppedup in theWes-tern Cape with the launch of two mobilesurgical theatres.Circumcision, which can be done in 30

minutes, can protect men against HIV in-fection as well as sexually transmitted in-fections.The mobile surgical theatres, about the

size of an average bread truck, will travelthrough the Winelands, Overberg andEden areas in the Western Cape, stoppingoff at towns, villages and communitiesalong the way. Theywere launched by theSACTWU Worker Health Programme(SWHP) at a community soccer event atStellenbosch recently. WHP has partne-red with theWestern Cape Health Depart-ment, as well as the Desmond Tutu TBCentre (DTTC) at Stellenbosch Universi-ty’s Parow campus in helping to roll outMMCat nine clinics in theWinelands andin and around Cape Town.Research trials in South Africa, Kenya

and Uganda have shown that MMC redu-ces the risk of contracting HIV by 60%.The government has set a target of medi-cally circumcising 4.3 million men in

SouthAfrica by 2016.Over 1.3millionmenhave been medically circumcised inSouth Africa since the government laun-ched its MMC campaign in 2010.MMC is potentially a life-saving proce-

dure for thousands of South Africans byreducing the risk ofHIV transmissionbet-ween heterosexuals.“We’re finding very fewmen are asking

for MMC at clinics. We need to think outof the box – so we’ll be launching radio ad-verts and putting branding on taxis andspaza shops to encouragemen to getmedi-cally circumcised through our ‘Get Wise,Circumcise’ campaign,” said Nikki So-boil, CEO of SWHP. A cartoon character,Clever Dick is the campaign’s ambassa-dor. At the launch,men andwomen gathe-red at the sports ground in Stellenboschto play five-a-side soccer.Men also poppedin to themobile surgical theatres to be cir-cumcised.“I’ve been wanting to do this for a long

is a slim young woman in hermid-20s with a young boy ofabout three.She tried to give mywife her details, but neither ofthem had a pen or paper andour main concern was gettingSally to the vet.Besides warning other

beach-goers, I want the ownerto know the consequence of herirresponsible action of bringingthis unleashed animal into apublic space.

wat huise beset – daar is eenwat in Delft-Suid meer as 30huise het. Waar is die regteeienaars? Gaan hulle weeraansoek doen op ander mensese name? As die polisie danregtig welslae wil behaal, moethulle saam met wetstoepassingaksie neem. Maar hulle wilalleen dinge doen en hul doendit nie so goed soos wat hullesê nie. Speedsters came under the spotlight whenmore than 1000 fines were issued duringoperations by provincial traffic authoritiesover the weekend.The highest speed recorded during a pro-

vincial traffic operation this weekend, wasrecorded in Brackenfell.Al-Ameen Kafaar, spokesperson for the

Western Cape Department of Transportand Public Works, says a driver travelling186 km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N1 inBrackenfell, was pulled over by provincialtraffic services during a weekend trafficoperation.“This was one of 1210 speeding offences

recorded province wide, during which 13112 vehicles were screened for speeding,”he says.Eight fatalities were reported overthe weekend, three of which were in thenorthern suburbs.In Bellville one person died in a vehicle

accident and in Milnerton two pedestrianswere killed,” says Kafaar.Furthermore, 24 alcohol blitz roadblocks

tive for Vodacom’s operations in theWesternCape, announced that aR600million upgrade for network invest-ment in the entireCapeMetro and ru-ral areas of the province will be im-plemented in the current financialyear.“The bulk of this amount will go to-

wards the network renewal and ex-panding our fibre optic network inthis region.“We’re also planning to increase

the number of 3G and LTE base sta-tions bymore than 50%, addingmorethan 280 new sites,” he said.“We’re also expanding our net-

work in the rural areas by adding 24new specialised 3G sites optimised tocover large areas. This means thatwe’re bringing faster data speeds totens of thousands of people who cur-rently only have Edge data services.”This upgrade will increase net-

work capacity and provide improvedvoice quality and enhanced mobiledata speeds across the city. With theexpansion of LTE sites in the city,smartphone users will also be able totake advantage of fast LTE downloadspeeds.“With LTE, video andmusic down-
