f or the second time in a month I have now watched a devastated mother bury a son. These men were not old – they were at the point of full-stride in

their life. They were both once full of promise and had that room-filling energy and charisma that the very few are touched with, often so early in life. But they died very different men: alone and tormented – the victims of an insidious enemy that comes from the darkness within and drags them down from view. Their mothers were beyond words in their despair. I watched scenes of the ordinary tragedy of life, cast in extraordinary circumstances of unbearable pain.

These men were not soldiers, although we grieved for two more of them last week as well. The similarity is that the battles of these men were with enemies every bit as treacherous and fugitive as an unseen terrorist, and every bit as deadly.

Depression, anxiety and the self-harm or self-neglect that attends these conditions are still more prevalent among women than men. But the common experience of many Australian families, and the cold reality according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, is that men are increasingly prone to these conditions, with dangerous, often-fatal consequences. Men are much less likely to talk about their problems or to seek help, and in the past 30 years the suicide rate for males aged 15 to 24 years has tripled.

One of the most alarming conclusions is that a single man is at much higher risk of developing these conditions and of an early death. Both the men whose funerals I attended were no longer in a relationship.

There is something going on with our men, with our boys. The talk at schools, in the HR department at work, in the media is all “feelings this” and “Beyond Blue that”, but for so many men that’s just a lot of rarefied bullshit that can’t really be trusted, and that won’t be of any use to quell the rising wave of panic they feel.

When a man is drowning, the last thing he will do is tell you, and that’s a dangerous silence. Instead, again according to the ABS, a man will commonly take refuge in alcohol or drugs, and that self-medication will often lead to the conditions that end a man’s life prematurely.

The highly articulate nature of women is always such a help to the process of sorting through and coming to terms with life’s pitfalls and disappointments. But there also seems to be a resilience – is it chromosomal? – that allows so many of us to push on.

It is learnt early that a storm of emotions can flood through a woman at many stages of her life, and somehow we come to understand that this is normal and that it will pass and it will come again and we will

cope. But get a boy child beyond the tantrum years, and I fear that this “storm” somehow becomes gendered – that it’s what a girl feels, not a boy. The emotionally buffeted young bloke learns to ignore, suppress, fear

these experiences, and the techniques for learning to cope with it are simply never taught and

never learnt. We would be wise to learn all that we can

about male health, mental and physical, and to encourage in boys as early as we can an ability to identify and to articulate the storms that

might rage within. My family knows from bitter experience that

no one can be “saved” from themselves, or from that abyss if they are truly headed that way; but maybe the path that leads to such an end can be avoided if the state of quiet desperation that so many men feel isn’t simply their lot, is instead identified as a pain that they just don’t have to live with any more. \

Melinda Schneider is anked by two male dancers on a small stage, somewhere in the the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. e ACCA building may be known for its light layer of rust, but Schneider’s moves

are more like a well-oiled machine. Doris choreographer Andrew Hallsworth is

clapping the beat loudly and the trio is moving with military precision through a part of the show that seems to have Schneider’s character, Doris Day, fending o men with the kind of panache you’d expect from her famous character Calamity Jane. Slap goes a cheek, a chest gets shoved and then boom, boom, Schneider res o two pistols with the snap of her hips to the le and right. “Not enough snap, more hips!” shouts Hallsworth. ey repeat the routine. e hips may not lie, but Hallsworth is still unhappy with the way they’re talking.

“Like this, girl,” he says, taking her place on stage between the bu ed boys (Sam Ludeman, lead of Xanadu and Rohan Browne, who played Ri in West Side Story) and ring o his hips so sharply that you can practically hear the bullets ricocheting around the room. Schneider nods, begins again and imitates Hallsworth perfectly, nailing the move, to whoops of laughter and applause from cast and crew.

“How about them hips?” she says, her jaw thrust out. “I’m like a self-saucing pudding!” “Or a sticky date …” o ers Browne.

e title of Schneider’s tribute to Doris Day, Doris – So Much More an the Girl Next Door is appropriate then; this is a tribute show with a little extra Tabasco. Schneider is no stranger to dancing or to the sass witnessed today. She demonstrated both on Dancing With the Stars season 10 (last year) when, a er being eliminated, she declared: “It’s better if you did have an

attraction (to your dance partner) and did sleep with them. Keeping the sexual tension there can make you a better dancer.”

Created by Schneider, written by Schneider and David Mitchell (co-writer of Dusty and Shout!) and directed by Tom Healey, Doris dares to tell the “naughtier” and darker sides of Day.

“I think she was a little naughtier in her private life than she was on screen,” Schneider says. “She had the goodie two-shoes image, but I think Doris was a pretty ery, earthy kind of woman.

“We wanted to show the truth about her life, not just that perennial virgin, because she really hated that. She wanted people to know that she was a real person. at she’d had tragedies and poor marriages and been through the mill just like everybody has.”

Schneider’s idea to “do” Doris was born eight years ago in Melbourne at the Midsumma Festival.

“I was part of the tribute concert, Todd McKenney was the MC. A whole lot of musical-theatre people were in it and I was the token country act. So I did four songs, three from Calamity Jane. It was largely a gay audience, and gay audiences are louder and more into it than straight audiences, generally speaking.

“ e response from everybody was just huge,” Schneider recalls. “It was overwhelming, it was just, wow! It felt right, and I thought, one day I’m going to have to do something about this. But I was very early into my country music career and I knew that it wasn’t the right time.

“Last year, when I did Dancing With the Stars, I thought that I wanted to release a di erent album, something other than originals. I thought that it might be time to do Doris. I’ve always been very wary of concept albums but I think that I’ve chosen well in terms of people to pay homage to. Our vocal ability is similar, I sing in pretty much all the same keys as Doris does and there are parallels in our lives that only became more aligned when I began to research her.”

T he rst memory Schneider has of Doris Day is from the musical Calamity Jane. It was her favourite movie as a child, because Day was playing “a rootin’-tootin’, whip-crackin’,

sharp-shootin’ tomboy”. Day’s slapstick routines and her great comedic timing perfectly complemented, in Schneider’s shining eyes, how beautiful she sounded and looked. e parallels Schneider speaks of begin in this period when, at just three years old, she was on stage singing in her mother’s Wild West-in uenced club act.

“We probably are a bit like the Carter family of Australia, us Schneiders,” she says, referring to the American music group made famous again by the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line. “It was a family a air; my mum and my aunty had a double comedy act. ey were like a hillbilly comedy duo in the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s.

“My aunt Rita was the comedian and mum was the straight man, so Rita would go, ‘I just found grandpa hangin’ up in the hen house with a rope tied round his neck’. And mum would say, ‘Did you cut him down?’ And Rita would say, ‘No, he ain’t dead yet’. It’s that kind of thing, very, very country and quite American in uenced. And then at eight I recorded with my mum on an album called e Magic of Yodelling. I didn’t think about being a singer, it was just what my family did.”

Schneider’s ease on stage led to a role as Terry Donovan’s daughter on soap opera A Country Practice, a period that was soured by the “jealous” reaction of her schoolmates, who “kicked me out of the group” the day a er her rst appearance screened.

“ at devastated me,” Schneider says, her face set hard. “ at really, really devastated me. So I didn’t want to act any more. I didn’t want to be di erent, I

didn’t want to have a yodelling mum, I didn’t want to be anything like her. I just wanted to t in. So I went into fashion, started a label and became a fashion designer for a few years, specialising in evening wear and stage costumes. I was a little bit ahead of my time – I designed something that was very, very similar to that Halle Berry dress at the Oscars. It was completely see-through and sequined in all the right places. I wore that at one awards ceremony 10 years before she did.

“I was 21 and living with my parents in Sydney at this point, slaving over a hot sewing machine in a double garage, which was my workshop. I was singing at the top of my lungs to the American top 40 on the radio while I was sewing, and mum would come down and go, ‘Are you sure you don’t want to be a singer?’ en I got an idea for this yodelling/techno thing called Tighten Up Your Pants ( e Yodelling Song). I wrote part of it with mum. When Cotton-Eyed Joe (by Swedish eurodance band Rednex) came out in 2004, bluegrass and techno were being married, it was kind of happening.”

While conceding that she could “probably not” stand to listen to the unlikely and thoroughly unnerving combination of yodelling and techno for more than ve minutes, Schneider still believes the track, recorded under the name “Audio Murphy Featuring Melinda” “stands up”. “It was fun, it gave me my rst taste of success in my own right. So that whetted my appetite for more.

“I didn’t want my last name associated with the song because you never get away from it,”

Schneider says of her strategy that had her dodge the one-hit-wonder bullet.

“ e song landed me a deal with Festival Records, but I knew I didn’t know who I was as an artist, so I got out of it. You only get one bite of the cherry and I knew I wasn’t ready. Looking back, it was a brave move. So I went away and just started writing and writing and doing demos, just trying to nd my sound and style. at was a battle, the next four years of trying to nd myself musically. But I nally realised that country music was the thing I really identi ed with. I love bluegrass music and George Jones, Ricky Skaggs, the real traditional country music.”

Schneider’s patience and then her passion for the music “in her veins” paid o . She went on to become one of Australian country music’s most feted songwriters and performers. To date she has won six Golden Guitar awards, her latest one awarded for her touching and relaxed duet with Paul Kelly, Still Here in 2009.

T he song tells the story of a couple re ecting on their di erences and their tensions as being the reason they are “still here”. Schneider, who is in a happy relationship now, with Mark Gable of

Aussie pub-rock band the Choirboys, admits she’s not singing from experience: “Another parallel between me and Doris is that we have both deferred to the men in our lives. She had the power and she gave it away. I can relate to that. I’ve done that in a few relationships I’ve had. People don’t realise just how dark parts of Doris’ life were – she su ered some pretty serious abuse at the hands of her husbands.”

e topic leads Schneider to a philosophical place. She is otherwise a sunny and forthright person – aware of her talents and free to harness them for whatever she needs to do, daily. Fashion design, an album of original songs, writing a high-pro le theatre show … Her lack of self-questioning seems to result in things getting done well and getting done quickly.

But the question of how she and how Day have dealt with heartache is answered carefully as she contrasts herself to her hero: “She’s a fatalist. I have those beliefs too. I’ve always been that way. I believe we do make our own destiny, but that some things are pre-ordained. If I hadn’t gone through these terrible heartaches that I had in relationships – I’ve lost a baby, been through a divorce and had a couple of pretty dysfunctional relationships, but if I hadn’t have gone through that, I wouldn’t be in the happy place I am now.”

As for word from Doris Day herself, Schneider has come close. “We’ve had an email from her manager on behalf of her. We sent them the script because we want them to be happy with it. Doris has been ripped o so many times in her life and betrayed. We didn’t want to do that. ey think we’ve written a great story about her life,” Schneider says with satisfaction.

“I thought she might have wanted to take out more – some of the show’s pretty dark in places. e scene where a gun’s held to her belly and the scene where she’s beaten up by her husband are two, but she was ne with it. Sadly, the odds of her seeing the show are pretty slim because she doesn’t leave Carmel, California, very o en.

“I’d just like to meet her one day, that would be enough for me.” \

T he mind of a child is a fertile place for a film to seed ideas. Readers of a certain vintage will nod sagely, recalling decades of viewing the open sea or white noise on a television set with some

trepidation after watching Jaws or Poltergeist in their youth.

But while a good scare is fun for some, there are many other delights to be found at the Little Big Shots International Film Festival For Kids – larcenous livestock, curious curses, winsome wizards and a selection of sweet stories about love.

“We try to find films that have positive messages and that are very much about kids or are driven by a child,” says festival director Chloe Boulton.

“If a film is told from a child’s point of view, it gives kids in the audience a way to access the themes and ideas in the films.”

For the past seven years, the festival has screened some of the best adult- and child-made films from around the world. Boulton has been involved in various capacities since Little Big Shots’ inception, and has been directing it since 2008. Winnowing the 500 short films she watched down to 80 for the festival was fun, but Boulton was also looking for thematically rich content. The result is a festival chock full of wry, deft films, which can provide far more contemplation and entertainment than their scanty running times would suggest.

Re v ie w \ F iL M

Mini MoviesHARi RAJ doesn’t think he’ll ever grow up.

“The way we’ve structured the festival, we’re able to put in films with strong messages that children can access,” says Boulton.

“They probably won’t tune in and say, ‘Hang on, this one’s teaching me a lesson’, but they will extract those messages and, hopefully, talk to their parents or guardians after the screening and discuss some of those issues.”

Revealing too much about these films would be sacrilegious, but Germany’s The Little Boy and the Beast is definitely one such film – check out our sidebar of quick picks.

Handily, there’s also an education kit, with discussion questions and activities, available on the festival’s website, along with a full program of the various hour-long sessions.

“We make sure that within every session there’s at least one Australian film, and at least one film that’s been made by a child, as well as a mix of other films from around the world and documentaries and dramas and animation,” says Boulton.

“The idea is that in that hour those kids will have this journey around the world, and sort of a balanced diet.”

Besides the films of international origin, Little Big Shots also puts out a call to Australian filmmakers of any age. For adults, it means an audience and a potential entrance to the festival circuit; for children,

it’s a marvellous introduction to the magic of making movies.

“One of the nicest things to happen is when you get a film entry from a kid, and when you ask them where they heard about the festival they say they attended it the year before,” says Boulton.

“That’s a good outcome for us – one of the things we’re striving to do is encourage children to make their own films, and we also run a few workshops every year to give them those tools.”

There is also a film-reviewing competition for children under the age of 15. Among the prizes

to be won is a spot on the jury for the following year’s festival, which will watch all the child- and adult-made Australian films and pick the best of the fest.

“It gives kids a voice and a chance to think critically about the films they have seen, and to

discuss their idea and have their say about what’s on the screen,” Boulton says.

But for those who just want a good time at the movies, there is plenty to see – and there’s no shortage of creatures and critters, either. But these, in their various forms, can be terribly important. As the English writer G.K. Chesterton once wrote, fairytales are more than true – not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten. \

MILLION DOLLAR BABY

Je Rowley spent his rst year with plaster up to his waist and doctors told his mother he would be a cripple for life. PETER WILMOTH meets the man who grew up to surf 20-foot waves for charity.

WALKING through Je Rowley’s Torquay garage, with its 20 sur oards stacked high, the jet-ski, otation vests and various other paraphernalia used for big-wave sur ng, it’s not what you might imagine to be a

headquarters for the raising of $1 million to combat breast cancer.

Rowley, 32, has decided that you shouldn’t wait until you’re rich to give something back. And the big-wave surfer who runs a protein powder business called Mirrabooka isn’t rich – but he is brave. He has decided to pursue, ride and record a 20-foot (six-metre) wave to raise that million. It’s a mission about which he feels passionate. “A lot of people wait until they make a lot of money before they start giving back. I live an amazing life here on the coast. Why wait? Start giving back now.”

Rowley’s idea was inspired by the pregnancies last year of his sister – “She’s now had a beautiful little baby, Jack” – and of “four of my good girl friends”. “ ere was a period where I was thinking, ‘Women go through so much, I need to give something back to them’,” he says.

“I have business goals, personal goals, and contribution goals,” he says. “(A personal achievement) goal is to catch a 20-foot wave by hand, not using a jet-ski. Another goal was to raise money for charity; to do something, to give back. I didn’t know how to do that. I thought about going to work at a soup kitchen. en I decided to incorporate two goals into one, do something that I love and turn that into giving back. I’m trying to conquer my fears, because catching a 20-foot wave is a scary thing. But that’s nowhere near as scary as having cancer.”

So far, through word-of-mouth and posters put up in the town, he’s raised $7500. “It’s a big challenge and a big learning curve,” he says. “I think you’ve got to set your goals pretty high. Talking to other people who have raised $1 million for charity – when they said they were trying to raise $1 million they were told they were crazy and it was impossible. People in the street are saying it’s amazing what I’m doing. ey’ll tell me a story of how breast cancer has touched them.”

Every day Rowley scans weather websites searching for the massive swell that he needs. When it’s imminent, he and his girlfriend will drive – if it’s on Victoria’s ominous southern coast – or y if it’s in South Australia or o the south-west coast of Western Australia.

“You start hearing rumours. Someone will be talking about the huge swell coming in next week. And if I haven’t spotted it already I’ll go check the long-range forecast. As I see it getting closer I’ll use a di erent set of websites telling me exactly when it’s going to hit.”

With sur ng de antly staying with the old measurements, a wave of 20 foot smashes a psychological barrier. “People are very reluctant to say a wave is 20 foot,” Rowley says. “You can say a wave is 15 or 18 foot, but to call a wave 20 foot, ears prick up and take notice. It’s massive. Paddling into a wave like that is probably the most challenging thing in sur ng.”

Con rming the 20-foot mark is “up to me”, he says. “I know when I catch a wave and document it, it is going to be scrutinised by everyone everywhere. My girlfriend will video it and I’ll use a professional surf 10 The weekly review \ june 8, 2011

photographer.” Rowley will use the photo to raise awareness and attract money for what he’s calling Charge for Charity.

Rowley has surfed big waves many times, both paddling into the wave and using a jet-ski to be towed onto larger swells that are impossible to catch by hand. He is the jet-ski partner of Ross Clarke-Jones, one of the world’s pre-eminent tow-in surfers, also based in Torquay. Together they have faced massive, deadly swells, often just the two of them.

“One day in Victoria last year it was over 20 feet, no problem,” Rowley says. “It was the ugliest ocean you’ve ever seen in your life. The wind was blowing onshore and there were white caps as big as houses out the back. We both caught a couple of massive waves. There was nobody around. We were on our own half a mile out to sea.

“Ross has this amazing jet-ski, a giant turbocharged, the Lamborghini of jet-skis. I had to pick him up under a cliff. There were three- and four-metre waves breaking up against the cliff.

“Ross Clarke-Jones lives a life without limits. He’s fit, he’s focused and he’s not scared about what other people think. I get told all the time that I’m crazy and slow down but what you’re doing is putting the spotlight on the person who’s talking to you and making them reflect on themselves.”

Rowley’s daily training involves blending the disciplines of “free diving” with the rigours of big-wave surfing. “Everything about free diving is calm and slow and everything about surfing is extreme,” he says. “In free diving you want to slow down your heart, slow down your breathing, control every environment and you only have to go under water once. In surfing you’ve got waves crashing on your heads, boards hitting you in the head, water going down your throat and you’ve got multiple waves hitting you, so it’s the exact opposite.

“If you can control your breathing, get a lot of oxygen into your blood, your heart can pump slower and stronger, and then when your heart’s relaxed your nervous system stays relaxed. The problem for most people when they see a big wave is that they switch straight into fight or flight – they panic. When you’re in fight or flight you lose all your basic motor skills. You lose your coherence, your ability to think straight … Or if you happen to catch a wave you’ve lost your basic motor skills, so you’ll fall straight off.”

The challenge, he says, is to control emotions and fears to survive a wipeout in huge waves.

“The worst wipeout is 25 seconds (held under water). A two-wave hold-down could be 50 seconds. But it’s not like holding your breath in the pool – it’s like you’re getting beaten up by a football team while you’re trying to hold your breath.”

Rowley has had his own adversities to overcome. Born in 1979 with “underdeveloped” legs, he spent the first year of his life in plaster up to his waist. Doctors told his mother: “He will be a cripple for life and will never walk.” He grew up in Anglesea on the Surf Coast, where his family moved in the 1970s from Melbourne for a sea change. His father, Bill Rowley, was a surfboard shaper and ran a surf shop selling his Springer surfboards.

“My earliest memories were crawling around the floor of my dad’s shaping bay playing in the foam dust, or crawling around the wetsuits in their shop. Or opening the gates at the farm when dad went surfing – got to get through the farms to get to the beach. So my brother and sister and I did all the gates. We loved it.”

The doctors had underestimated him. At the age of two he was on body boards in the shorebreak, at eight standing up on a real board. It was a blissful beachside life until 1990, when the Pyramid Building Society collapsed. “It ruined the business,” Rowley says. “Mum and dad lost everything. We lost our home, lost the business, like so many other Victorians. Everything they’d worked for for 20 years.

“My parents decided to turn a negative into a positive.

We got a borrowed caravan and a borrowed car. They put us into correspondence school and we drove around Australia for a year. It ended up being one of the best years of our lives. A year of time with our parents, staying in caravan parks, we learnt how to bait hooks and tie knots, we saw crazy wildlife, snakes, goannas, sharks and turtles, caught barramundi, saw crocodiles.”

At the end of this odyssey they settled on the Gold Coast and lived at Burleigh Heads for five years. Each school holidays Rowley would return to his beloved Victoria. “Every time you surfed at the Gold Coast there were 100 people in the water at the major breaks. It was crazy. And it was really rough. We saw things at a young age in the street, people getting bashed. It wasn’t the lifestyle that I wanted.”

O n the last day of school, when all his mates went off to Schoolies Week, Rowley flew back to Victoria and never left. “The whole family followed me back down.”

He surfed in junior surf competitions until he was 20 but was not impressed with the “knee-high” waves in which the contests were held. He preferred big waves, but was in awe of their power and danger. “I’ve paddle surfed into 20-foot waves in Hawaii but I was really scared and I didn’t catch any big ones,” he says. “Now I’m a littler older I want to really have a good crack at it.

“Out there in big surf it’s amazing. It’s almost life-changing. So much water moving around. I remember sitting having a look over a couple of waves there and it felt I was looking down at the whole Hawaiian islands; that’s how far up you are and the view you have. I froze. I looked into a few and it was too much for me. I was 18 or 19 and I wasn’t ready for it.”

Later he did surf waves of up to 30 foot, but always using a jet-ski, which allows surfers to catch swells out at sea. “It’s really wild and stormy most of the time, very inhospitable, howling winds; it’s usually pretty ugly,” he says. “When you’re out there and it’s huge, there’s usually only a few people out in the water and they really want to be there.

“When you’re on a jet-ski you can cover an area as big as a couple of football fields. The jet-ski just drives over there and catches a wave. But when you’re paddling you’ve got to position yourself right where you can catch the wave by paddling. If you’re waiting for a 20-foot set and you see it coming, the whole horizon goes black. You see this black line on the horizon, like a tsunami coming. Every instinct in your body is telling you to go for the horizon, paddle fast now. But you know you’re in the (right) spot and you have to override all your instincts and not move.”

And if you’re wrong? “If it’s a 25-foot set or a 30-foot set you’re history. You come over the first one and if

it’s 25 foot you’re going to wear it straight on the head. That’s why it’s the ultimate challenge. It’s your judgment call against the ocean. It is the ultimate test – how calm can you stay?”

Rowley tells an extraordinary story about the wave that nearly killed him two years ago while tow-in surfing with Clarke-Jones and Jeff’s brother Chris. “The biggest wave of the day came through on the biggest swell I’d ever seen. (It was on Victoria’s wild south coast). It was in the middle of winter, one of those ugly, howling-wind days, only a couple of people in the water. We love those days.

“I was in position for where a 20-foot wave would come though. We were on the jet-ski, came over the top of the first wave in the set and knew the second wave was going to be the one. The wave was 30 foot. We were so out of position. My brother Chris was driving the jet-ski. He was struggling to get up and over the top of the wave without getting pitched. As I was holding on to the rope behind him I realised I was already on the wave so I let go of the rope and started to ride the wave.

“It was so much bigger than any wave I’d ever seen. I was deep in the wave with a huge wall a couple of hundred metres in front of me. I thought, ‘This wave is going to kill you, so give it everything you’ve got’. I committed to it and leaned forward. As I watched the thing unfold and barrel over me, I held my line in the barrel and … I had this beautiful view inside the barrel and then it spat, there was all this white mist and I could hardly see. The mist started to clear and I realised I’d come out of the barrel and I’d made it … An instant of elation passed through me. But what I didn’t see was the wave was closing out and I couldn’t see the lip coming down from three (building) storeys above me, and this slab of water as big as a pool was coming down straight on top of me. The wave landed on me. It crushed me flat, hit me into the water and my left shoulder ripped back so hard that my left arm went numb (instantly), knocked all the wind out of my lungs …

“People think you can curl up in a ball and hold your breath, but this thing hit me so hard and fast it was like a rag doll being hit by a Mack truck. You can’t pull your arms and legs in, you are flailing wildly. It held me down for 25 seconds, which when you’re winded and beaten is a long time. About three times I thought it was going to let me back up … but no.”

Rowley knew the next wave was arriving any second, and he probably wouldn’t be able to survive too much time under water. “I got to a point where I became really calm, thinking, ‘You’re probably not going to come up from this’. I thought I was history.”

He managed to get to the surface, coughing up blood, throwing up water. His brother picked him up on the jet-ski. “I learnt a lot from it. I thought, ‘If that’s the biggest wave I’ve ever seen and that’s what it’s going to do to me, I’ve got to go and train for that’. It didn’t scare me away. That wave was the benchmark.”

For 10 years Rowley worked at the surf company Quiksilver in Torquay until leaving two years ago to start his protein powder business. He invites corporates or individuals to sponsor him through his website. All money goes into a holding account for the charity without touching Rowley’s bank account and he is not charging any running costs.

He will not give up on this dream. “If I don’t get the $1 million I’ll keep going. I’ll use everything I’ve learnt this year from it and go again next year.”

After spending time with Rowley, you believe him. If he can stare down a 30-foot wave, there’s little doubt he’ll become the million-dollar baby. \

L IFEwithBIRD designers Nicholas Van Messner and Bridget McCall summed it up perfectly. ere used to be a time and place if you wanted to wear track pants, and that was the couch – but a lot has

happened to the sportswear classic since fashion got its hands on it.

“We’re all for them,” say Van Messner and McCall, who have created a special tracksuit to raise money for the annual Tracky Dack Day, which will be launched on June 9 at the Whitehouse Institute in Melbourne.

e public can also participate in the fund-raiser by wearing tracksuit pants on July 1 to promote awareness of kids battling illness and injuries in hospital.

All money raised from Tracky Dack Day will go to TLC for kids, a national charity that provides emergency distractions to nurture the emotional well-being of kids undergoing medical treatment within 48 hours of the request being made.

When you think of tracksuits, images of shopping malls (think Fountain Gate’s Kath and Kim), gangster rappers and their bling-inspired video clips and sessions at the gym may come to mind. But when well-known designers such as J’Aton, Aurelio Costarella, Carla Zampatti, Alpha60, Ellery, LIFEwithBIRD, Lui Hon, Dhini, Jenny Bannister and Extinct had a shot at revving the celebrity status of tracky dacks for the launch of this fund-raiser, they gave the suburban sportswear classic a run for its money.

“Designers all the world over have embraced the sportswear classic and made it a high-fashion regular, minus the synthetics and stripes,” say Van Messner and McCall.

e inspiration for their charity-designed track pant was all about conjuring innocence and purity. “It’s about feeling free and rejuvenated,” they say. “We wanted to create a piece that was sophisticated, but also true to the relaxed and understated nature of this iconic comfort garment.”

Jenny Bannister’s creation is as playful and fun as it gets. It’s all about channelling the wild child within and looking glamorous from every angle. “Tracky dacks are not for general exhibition,” says Bannister. “Surprisingly, Aussies have taken to them with a vengeance and made them a staple classic, not just for the gym or house wear. My tracky dack idea is to look hot, artistic, creative and on re at all times. We only live once and should look good at all times.”

Kym Ellery, from fashion house Ellery, wanted her track pants to inspire the wearer, tempting us with her own spin on bling. “We have hand-beaded some crystals and sequins on them, so that when you look down there is a glimmer shining back at you,” says Ellery.

Simon Foretti, from Extinct, says, “A good pair of trackies is like a timeless friend who is always there for me. ey make you feel like you’re at home. e rule is to nd a pair that suits you and this involves investing in one good pair rather than having three average ones. ey are as Australian as the Hill’s Hoist and will be so for many generations to come, so don’t ght it, embrace it.”

While Alpha60’s Alex and Georgie Cleary have taken their idea one step further and turned to their favourite designer, Josef Ho mann, for inspiration. “He believed that all objects should be designed with consideration. When he created a house, he designed every aspect, from the structure, through to the furniture and cutlery,” they say. “We took his theory a step further and designed these trackies to match his most famous building, the Palace Stoclet. Imagine trackies that matched your décor.”

e fund-raiser on June 9 will be hosted by Sarah Gale and the designers will show o their creations for a one-o bidding chance. \

FoghoRn Leghorn has a wife. She is at the table beside us at Union

Dining this Wednesday night – braying, boisterous and oblivious to the discomfort of her fellow diners.

“We often have two bottles of wine between us,” she bawls at a waitress as her friend’s eyes dart to the floor, perhaps hoping it will cleave open and swallow her. I’d prefer the floor swallowed her friend so we could all enjoy Swan Street’s new sensation in peace.

On a stay-at-home, shivery weekday evening, a fortnight after it opened, Union Dining is heaving with hungry types lured by the promise of Nicky Riemer’s restorative European fare.

Riemer, recently of the Melbourne Wine Room, and business partner Adam Cash (Cutler & Co) must be thrilled with the enthusiastic reception to their new business.

They’ve opened on a historic corner site made over in broadly French-brasserie style – walls of mirrors, banquette, Thonet chairs – with Mediterranean stone-tiled floors, so it feels sort of midway between bistro and trattoria.

This is the unloved end of Swan Street, beyond Church Street, where the neighbours are a petrol station and a car wash. Very unglamorous. But step beneath the iron-lace verandah into Union’s twinkling, bustling interior and the location becomes irrelevant – its confidence and polish seem destined to replicate the Cutler effect and eventually gentrify their surroundings.

Cash’s fastidious service standards are obvious in the vigilance with which tap water, wine and bread are refilled and the diligence with which black-aproned staff expound on the menu and wine list. Perhaps sometimes they’re even a little too diligent – a brief description, thanks, not a dissertation.

Riemer describes her cooking at Union as provincial European which, on the menu, mostly translates to subtly French and Italian-accented dishes.

We start with the piedmont tartare – it’s uncooked beef, yes, but instead of raw egg, this northern-Italian version is spliced with celery and horseradish and coated in pecorino cheese. In fact, it is so densely dredged in pecorino and parsley that the red meat is completely disguised. Perhaps that was the intention.

In the absence of eggy goo, the meat is light and fresh, its clean, slightly metallic flavours accentuated by the crispness of celery hearts and the snifter of horseradish. Tartare can be such a hardcore dish but Riemer has recalibrated it into a sophisticated entrée that will be difficult to resist on the next visit.

Our second entrée is ham hock, slow braised to fall-apart consistency and muddled with al dente fregola and cornichons. It’s a lovely ensemble dish where the various flavours and textures play nicely together and the smoked hock, surprisingly, doesn’t steal the show.

The spatchcock is a glutinous, rib-sticking casserole of braised bird in red wine with olives, shallots and kaiserfleisch (smoked pork belly) that is so suited to this bleak wintry night that, on the first bite, I can almost feel my eyes roll back into my head a little.

I’m less impressed with the goat abbacchio, slow-braised beast on the bone in a tomato-based ragu with olives and braised capsicum. The sauce is pleasant but every time I jab my fork into the oversized hunks of roasted ruminant I hit bone, not flesh. The meat-to-bone ratio is rather slim.

On the bright side, side dishes of hand-cut chips and portobello mushrooms are excellent.

Pity the poor sod out back who has to sliver the spuds, but these fries are awesome. They’re not that hot when they arrive, but that doesn’t matter; as they cool down their salty, crispy, stick-like goodness more and more resembles those Smith’s French Fries that used to come in chip packets. (They probably still do – I don’t get play-lunch any more, so wouldn’t know.)

The mushrooms, simmered with garlic, onion

and chilli, are voluptuous and slippery.Dessert is the definite highlight. Not so much the

dessert cup of raspberry sorbet sozzled in limoncello, which is light on the booze and, anyway, the lemon liqueur seems a dubious match with the super-sweet berry ice. But the croustade, mon dieu.

Its rustic, golden-brown pastry casing resembles the Bilbao Guggenheim in miniature. Cut inside and it explodes with the cooked caramel flavours of apple and intense, Armagnac-infused prunes, sweetened with melting pistachio sorbet.

It’s like an enormous man-hug, a sensation that pretty much sums up Union Dining. It’s comfort central, the perfect antidote to a long, cold Melbourne winter … and a noisy neighbour. \

DECANTER\ BEN THOMAS ON TASTINGS FIT FOR A QUEEN

The Queen’s Birthday weekend – the last long weekend until

November – always throws up a dilemma for me: cram a range of experiences into the three days; or relax and recharge for the half-year ahead. Both of these can easily incorporate a glass of wine, but I generally choose to get out and visit a wine region or two.

This year, no fewer than four wine regions around the state are hosting weekend-long events, so it looks like I’ll be racking up the kilometres in the car.

From wine barrel-rolling races down Rutherglen’s High Street to Dolce Fa Niente (“the sweetness of doing nothing”), at Politini in the King Valley, region-wide events are great for the grape lover in the family, but there’s always more than enough to keep designated drivers and, most importantly, children entertained.

A mate and I took our two-year-olds, Mim and Zef, for an overnight stay at Rutherglen a few weeks ago and were thrilled to find play equipment, toys and colouring books at all the cellar doors we visited, giving us much-needed breathing space to taste and chat through a few wines. One winemaker even let her chooks loose for the kids to chase as we enjoyed a glass with lunch.

Our wives will be pleased to know we did curtail our tastings to supervise the kids, so a good tip for tasting wines with little ones around is not to feel obliged to

taste all the wines on offer. If reds are your thing, skip the whites and get stuck into the shiraz straight away.

The King Valley and Rutherglen are both fair drives (three hours by car), though they can be done as day trips if you don’t have time to hang around.

Closer to home, the Mornington Peninsula is hosting its annual winter wine weekend. Its keynote event is at the Red Hill showgrounds on the Saturday of the Queen’s Birthday weekend, with more than 200 wines available for tasting under the one roof.

And there’s more to the celebrations than the main event. Leave the showgrounds and head to cellar doors to try back vintages and grab bargains.

I wrote about Heathcote being a favourite region of mine recently, and it looks like there are some interesting tastings over the weekend. Wineries with cellar doors are open each day, but what interests me are the smaller wineries, that have their wines available for tastings at Cellar & Store on the Heathcote main drag.

Heathcote is an hour and 40 minutes’ drive from Melbourne and there are a few ways to get there. Go through Lancefield and you’ll find yourself at Shelmerdine’s cellar door before you make it to town. \

taste this

Stonier Chardonnay 2009(Mornington Peninsula) $25; 13.5% ★★★★

With aromas of peach, toast, melon and struck match along with generous, fruit-driven stonefruit, grapefruit and honey flavours, this well-made, solid wine will appeal to a broad range of drinkers. It gets the balancing act between bright, chalky acidity and rich flavours just about right, and a creamy texture adds to the wine. It has good length with spice and honey flavours on the finish.

Food match \ Grilled scallops

Rutherglen Estates Savagnin 2010(Region) $16; 11.5% ★★★ ½

This would be a good option for parties or barbecues. It goes well with food and would make wine lovers and people who just want a glass of white happy. Low alcohol is a plus as it’s a wine that could easily be guzzled. It is, however, a rather serious wine and a good example of local savagnin. Flavours and aromas of pear, honeysuckle, lemon zest and a hint of tinned pineapple sit well with crisp, slightly chalky acidity and creamy texture.

Food match \ Antipasto

Brown Brothers Limited Release Shiraz 2009 (Heathcote) $29.90; 14.5% ★★★★ ½

These limited-release wines are a good reason to head to Brown Brothers’ cellar door at Milawa. Matured in mostly aged American oak, this is plush and powerful with aromas of blackberry, cherry, spice and cured meat. It’s got fresh acid on the palate, fine-grained tannin and medium-bodied flavours of blackberry, pepper, clove and oak sweetness that build and build on the finish. It’s a remarkably light and well-balanced wine given the high alcohol.

Food match \ Roast lamb

Holly’s Garden Ramato Pinot Gris 2010 (Whitlands) $17; 13.5% ★★★★

The Whitlands Plateau is at the southern end of the King Valley, and these grapes were grown at an altitude of 750 metres. Ramato means copper in Italian and is an old method of production in which the grapes are crushed and left on their skins to gain a copper-like colour, rich texture and crisp acidity. Texture and acidity are structural highlights, as are aromas and flavours of pear, golden delicious apple, red berries, citrus (juice and pith) and a varietal smokiness. I had to double-check the price. Food match \ Peking duck

Crittenden Estate The Zumma Pinot Noir 2009 (Mornington Peninsula) $49; 13.5% ★★★★ ½

Winemaker Rollo Crittenden has been on a roll lately, and it continues with this release. Elegant, lifted aromas of light and dark cherry, plum, mineral and loam lead to fresh, vivid flavours of cherry, rhubarb, raspberry and earth. Its structure – a silky texture with acid and tannins in balance – stands it in good stead as an ageing prospect and it was better drinking after being opened for a day. It has a persistent finish with layers of sweet and sour flavours.

And then along came ... Mandy

specialty

T ravelling north from Melbourne, just a er you pass the last of those infernal yellow arches that infect much of Victoria, there comes a moment when the neon turns to wood and the land just

opens up. e faraway mountains are mere suggestions, and the sky goes on forever.

So too do the vines you see immediately as you enter Rutherglen, parallel rows of potential stretching o into the distance. e town was built in the 1850s on an appetite for gold, but soon developed a commensurate taste for viticulture. Today the precious metals arouse much less urgency, but the earth still nourishes those who stayed.

e region is buttressed by its forti ed wines – as a sign in the centre of town proudly informs visitors, Sydney may have a nice harbour, but Rutherglen has a great port. But there are other delights for the inquisitive palate, such as bubbles and sparkles and a pantheon of titanic reds, of which durif is a local speciality.

e rst stop on our itinerary is Anderson Winery, run by father-and-daughter team Howard and Christobelle. Howard’s prized old MG is usually out the front, and you’re likely to be served by one of the pair in the same room where the bottling and other processes take place. Sparkling wines are a forte.

Next is the Jones Winery and Vineyard, where Mandy Jones dishes out delightful winks along with duck con t of conversation-halting deliciousness. I’m not sure what the collective noun is for wire emus (perhaps wiremus), but there are plenty to be found at Jones’, along with other ne food and handmade bric-a-brac in a setting that exudes equal amounts of class and country charm.

A er lunch we stop at Buller’s where Monica Neideregger is an excellent, ebullient host. Buller’s is rightfully proud of its Calliope series of tokay and muscat, which each received perfect scores from US wine critic Robert Parker – a taste leaves us musing about the treacly goodness.

Rutherglen’s main street is charming in that manner indigenous to country towns, with pubs showing o their gold-rush era façades and an extremely well stocked second-hand bookstore. Parker’s Pies is a local institution, but we decide to save our stomachs for dinner. We retire instead to Tuileries’ well-appointed rooms, where we sip local sparkling wine and watch the setting sun paint the sky over the vineyards with glorious pastels. Life is hard, sometimes.

For dinner, also at Tuileries, we leave the choice

of wine in the hands of our friendly waiter; his recommendations of a lighter red for our appetisers and one of those mighty durifs for the steak are perfect. ere is also a splendidly surreal touch when a cadre of bagpipers on their annual retreat, resplendent in tartan, march through the dining rooms.

“What do they wear under their kilts?” asks my companion. I say nothing, which just may be correct.

e next day dawns bright and frosty. We nimbly dodge the fresh paint of Tuileries’ just-completed wine bar and pop over to Rutherglen Estates, a cellar door just next to the restaurant and handily close to the main street. We’re informed that the selection here

is popular with the young ones, but there are plenty of options no matter how many years

you’ve spent in a cellar.Stanton & Killeen Wines is next on the agenda.

Simon Killeen is enthusiastic and informative as he leads us through the innards of his family’s winery, rattling o popular vintages and tales of the following that certain wines have garnered over the years. e cellar door is cosy, and it’s hard to tell who’s more friendly, Simon or the resident cat.

Wines. The assorted trophies at the cellar door bear mute, shiny testament to Morris’ pedigree, and Mick Morris himself is a repository of knowledge, just as happy to discuss techniques and subtle differences in vintage as he is to break into stories of Rutherglen’s past. (The Morris fortifieds, it must be mentioned, disappear with alarming alacrity when my mother and grandmother come to visit.)

Finally, after a quick reshuffle of the itinerary, we reach All Saints Estate, where we’re greeted by the intriguingly incongruous sight of a terracotta-coloured castle. Built in the 1880s, it’s a replica of the Castle of Mey in Scotland, and shelters a well-stocked cellar door and the nearby Indigo Cheese Company, which has nice nibbles. As we eat lunch, couples lounge by the pond with a bottle of wine and children play in the grass; it’s all very wholesome.

As we leave, under an avenue of trees in their first flirtations with autumnal glory, it’s hard not to think that the most impressive aspect of Rutherglen is its scalability. Main Street is sleepy enough, but it comfortably handles thousands of visitors during the Walkabout (see breakout). The same flexibility can be ascribed to the various personalities who inhabit the region’s cellar doors. They’re lively and honest, as happy to answer inane questions from interested beginners as they are to have serious discussions about yeasts and yields. If you do stop by, be sure and have a chat. You might just learn something. \

Go WalkaboutFor the past 37 years, Rutherglen has played host to people from all over the country during its annual Winery Walkabout. All Saints Estate puts on muscat masterclasses by winemaker Dan Crane and tours of the castle, while Anderson Winery is putting on dinners in honour of Howard Anderson’s 40th anniversary of making wine.

There’s live music to be found across the region; Jimmy Barnes is a fan of Buller’s produce, while this year their concert-ready grounds will play host to Taxiride lead singer Jason Singh.

Rutherglen Estates and Stanton & Killeen Wines have reserve tasting and live bands too, and at the latter you can win a barrel of wine if your golf skills are good enough.

At Jones Winery, there’s vertical tasting and sneak previews on offer, as well as a bazaar with more of its signature garden art, and Morris Wines has all manner of stalls and entertainment as well as award-winning wines to sample.

There’s too much going on to fit into this space, but wherever you visit you’re likely to find produce and craft stalls, and fine food to go along with the fine drink. Hop on the website for a full itinerary.

There is an abundance of regional tour operators from which to choose, and selections that show off the versatility of the region – from big reds to juicy flavours to spicy, peppery tastes. \

research is part-bush, part-suburbia and part of the Nillumbik’s green wedge. One minute you can be driving

down winding country roads with signs warning of horses crossing and

kangaroos, the next you among large houses on big blocks of land.

Just past Eltham, Research is quieter and with more of a village flavour. The appeal to families is obvious with its proximity to shops, bus routes and schools such as Research Primary School, Eltham College, Eltham High and Catholic Ladies’ College.

Marconi Court is in a prestige pocket of Research off Research-Warrandyte Road.

The house at No.3, set on 4013 square metres, offers the complete lifestyle. If you were talking hamburgers, this would be one “with the lot”.

It has four bedrooms, two bathrooms, including an en suite, formal living, a dining room/billiards room, a vast granite kitchen with informal living and dining, rumpus room, study, a spacious outdoor entertainment area, swimming pool and flood-lit mod grass tennis court.

From the kitchen, the children are visible in the pool or on the court – a bonus for parents who need to know where their youngsters are.

The phrase “the great entertainer” also comes to mind, as you would never be short of a room to kick up your heels. Whether it is formal or informal, inside or outside, this house offers great spaces, including a brick-paved terrace with a roof, which can be opened or closed according to the weather.

Set at the end of a sweeping driveway lined by well-tended shrubs, the house is imposing at first glance. A central flight of stairs leads to the entrance and the entry hall.

Recently renovated bathrooms in the popular mocha and white tones with square, above-bench basins and sleek cabinets and marble feature tiles add contemporary style.

Owned by the one family in its 18 years, the house is a testament to its owners’ quest for perfection. From the immaculately clipped shrubs lining the drive to the high-gloss granite in the kitchen and porcelain-tiled floors, everything is in perfect condition. A carpeted, sunken lounge has a marble-trimmed open fireplace that does not have to be switched on. In one corner a french-polished timber bar has a mirrored back wall for the rows of glass shelves holding top-shelf liquor.

Two steps up from the lounge is the formal dining room, but it is used as a billiards room and to house the family’s collection of sporting memorabilia.

The core of this house is the generous living zone that encompasses the kitchen/meals area and family room. The kitchen, with its black, glossy granite benches, including an island bench, is bright and sparkling, with

white cabinets below the benches. With a tiled floor, this informal eating and cooking zone leads through double doors to a very large rumpus room. At one end of the rumpus room, double doors open to the verandah; at the other end is a study with powder room next to it.

The back verandah effectively becomes a year-round outdoor room. The swimming pool and tennis court are in full view, but – because of the mature trees and hedges on the fence line and another tennis court in an adjoining property – the neighbours are not. Steps from the paved verandah lead up to the tennis court level. There is also enough garden and lawn for a trampoline just near the verandah.

Back inside, three large bedrooms, and the new bathroom that serves them, are grouped off the hall just past the family room. The main bedroom, which overlooks the front garden, is elevated and has great views across the front of the property to houses in the distance. Its mocha feature wall creates a point of interest in this large room and co-ordinates with the mocha-and-white en suite.

With its privacy, zoned living and resort-like facilities, this property is a great advertisement for why families are drawn to Research. \

Toorak has St Georges Road, Albert Park has St Vincent Place and Eaglemont has the stunning Summit Drive. This premier address – perched high in the Walter Burley Grif n-designed Mount Eagle Estate

– is home to some of Melbourne’s nest examples of interwar architecture.

Although built in 1932, the 1691-square-metre property at No.3 bears no scars from the Depression. It speaks only of good times and great style; from the sweeping lawns out front to the timber-clad foyer with domed ceiling and glistening chandelier inside. This house is grand without being ostentatious and elegant without losing its warmth. Both front reception rooms are tted with log res and are connected by multipane glass doors.

Views of the surrounding greenery spill through deco leadlight windows, but the garden is best enjoyed out on the covered front patio. Much of this house reminds of a colonial-era hotel. Even the main bedroom, with its stunning bay window, is not unlike a presidential suite.

The current owners, only the second since the 1950s, added a sunroom overlooking the resort-sized swimming pool out the back. With its high-pitched glass ceiling, this is their preferred place for dinner parties.

Everyday meals, however, are enjoyed in the good-sized kitchen, which is tted with new Bosch appliances. Not unlike St Vincent Place, the residents on Summit Drive share a beautifully maintained common garden that extends beyond the back fence. \ LIAM CARTER

Low maintenance is usually the rst thing that comes to mind when describing a unit. But here at No.3/26 Belmont Road, the word “luxury” is also tting. Take the kitchen, which has thick granite benches,

jarrah cabinets and elite European appliances, including a double La Germania oven. The vendor has hosted 23 people for lunch in the open-plan living hub, which has high ceilings, polished boards and garden views through a curved wall of north-facing windows. The quality is not surprising when you consider where we are. But not everyone will be lucky enough to nd is a position so close to the Darebin Creek, parklands and bike trail. The three units have been built in a style sympathetic to the area’s interwar architecture. They combine gables, a pretty brick trim and low garden walls. This property includes a double garage with internal access via the laundry, three double bedrooms and a study by the entrance. \ LIAM CARTER

In Eltham North, every block, big or small, feels like a private hideaway. The thick bush and hilly terrain make it hard to know that there are others around. This double-storey brown-brick residence is at the base

of a steep 878-square metre block. The thick border of gums, that reaches right up to the front balcony, make the property seem smaller than it actually is. Inside, there is more than enough space for a family to grow. The oor plan is split across three levels. Below, there are three street-facing bedrooms, including the main with its walk-in wardrobe and en suite. Up one ight of stairs is the fourth bedroom and rumpus, and up top is the family living hub with soaring timber-lined ceiling and exposed brick walls. Built in 1976 by the vendors, the house has many original features but has also been updated. The kitchen is only ve years old. Out the back, there is a large covered area and garage with plenty of storage. \ LIAM CARTER

May Street occupies a surprisingly sleepy pocket of Macleod. Running up the side of a hill, the street enjoys bushland views across to the Watsonia Barracks. You wouldn’t know that the bustling Greensborough

Highway is only a couple of bends away. What adds to this street’s quiet, almost comforting,

charm are the rows of 1950s weatherboard houses that remind of calmer, simpler times. No.12 is one such house. It sits back from the street behind a manicured front yard and a liquidambar with changing autumn leaves. Inside, you’ll nd the ideal blend of old and new.

The house has been renovated, but not to the point that it is unrecognisable from its former self. For example, there

The effect is to break up the living hub without isolating the rooms. Nearby there is an open-plan kitchen, recently tted with new coffee-toned cabinets and stainless steel appliances, including dishwasher. The accommodation is well zoned across the oor plan.

The third bedroom is near the back entry and is next to a bathroom that doubles as a laundry. Polished oorboards lead down to the main bedroom and nursery, perhaps, served by a second bathroom. The backyard is private and again well balanced, with a large deck, plenty of lawn and mature garden beds. \ LIAM CARTER

New for old a great way to go

raze or renovate is a dilemma faced by many owners of older houses. Old houses can end up costing owners a lot of money and renovations have the potential of blowing the budget when

unforeseen problems crop up. However, if the house has heritage or sentimental value, renovating is the only way to go.

Michael Krause, who has been in property development for 11 years, comes down squarely on the demolish-and-rebuild side of the argument. A carpenter, Krause knows the Melbourne building business inside-out and used to work mainly on renovation of older houses.

“I found the cost of renovating was getting so high. That was why I found G.J. Gardner so appealing. For $400,000, a client could get a brand-new home,” he said.

Krause is a franchisee of custom-home builder G.J. Gardner Homes, an award-winning independent building firm. Established in Queensland in 1983, G.J. Gardner now has 85 franchises in Australia, New Zealand and the US. Its premise is that each of its offices is owned and operated by a registered local builder who knows and understands local issues such as getting plans through council and whose local knowledge ensures that each new house is ideally suited to conditions in the area.

Krause builds about 30 new houses in Melbourne’s

eastern and south-eastern suburbs every year and works with a team of subcontractors he has used for the past five to 10 years and that he trusts to meet G.J. Gardner’s high standards.

“I recently had a couple who were the perfect example of why it is better to rebuild. They had an old home that they bought three years ago and they had two children. For $430,000 they could get a brand new home with everything exactly as they want it. That price included

the demolition, design and any permits needed,” he said.“In the eastern suburbs there are very few vacant

blocks if people want to build. If you want to live in these areas you are most likely going to buy a house that is up to 80 or 90 years old and you are buying other people’s renovations, which has the potential for all sorts of problems.

“When you build a new home you have the security of a seven-year standard warranty and a 10-year structural warranty. If you keep this home for five years and decide you want to sell it, the resale value is going to be much higher than that of a renovated old home,” Krause said.

While his main market is houses ranging from $450,000 to $750,000, G.J. Gardner is also building $1 million-plus homes at the top end of the market in Hawthorn and Prahran.

G.J. Gardner has a range of designs available to clients but Krause also builds for those who have had their own architect design a house. “First up we do engineer’s soil test and site assessment to ensure the house plans are suitable for the block of land. We then do a full costing, working drawings and at the same time get the necessary building permits,” he said. “We want to be sure they know exactly what they can and can’t do.” \

For 42 years, this Montmorency property has served the current owners well. The house is set well away from the main road and is at the crest of a steep driveway. It offers privacy and several entertainment

areas that the whole family will enjoy. The large lounge and meals area are at the front of the house and have views of the front garden. It is close to the retro-inspired kitchen, which has a tiled bench and follows a cream-and-pastel-lemon colour scheme. All three bedrooms are at the rear of the house. The main bedroom has built-in wardrobes and doors that open onto the undercover, elevated patio. Two more bedrooms are nearby. All the bedrooms share the blue-and-green family bathroom and separate toilet. There is also a spacious sunroom near the bedrooms, which overlooks the backyard. Other features include ducted heating, an oversized shed and ample off-street parking. This property is close to Montmorency shopping village, Montmorency station and schools. \ BIANCA VILLAROSA
