Research in Focus

Jaggery making is typically a rural and small-scale enterprise owned and manned by farmers.Studies clearly indicate that one of the areas thatneeds considerable improvement is the energyefficiency of the process. A research groupheaded by Prof. NG Shah of CTARA and ProfS.M. Mahajani of Chemical EngineeringDepartment, IIT Bombay set out to find out waysfor maximising energy efficiency of jaggery unitsand making them more cost effective, labourfriendly and environment friendly. The projectwas funded by Rajiv Gandhi Science andTechnology Commission, Maharashtra (India).Primary data was collected from 300+ jaggerymaking units in Kolhapur district and the entireprocess was evaluated so that an alternativeprocess solutions are developed.

The R and D work is in the stage of field level-testing and the various improved process-improvements are delinated as below:

Technology : Improvements in JaggeryProcessing and Product Improvements basedon the study

Jaggery Making: Process Improvements

Three alternatives in “Process Development& Tech-transfers” achieved :

Modified pan that converts from Batchto Continuous Mode : Installed at thecommercial unit (1Ton/day) at the siteof Jaggery unit holder in Warnanagar.

Benefits:- Labour friendliness- Cost of the modified pan : Rs 1 lakh/-

(The intervention pays back in oneseason (5 months) : cost saved throughlabour saving).

- Further dissemination is planned in nextjaggery making season

Demonstrated a process of EfficientCombustion saving Bagasse. Savedbaggase briquetted and sold

A Novel process pilot plant (100 Kg / 8hr) installed at TKEIT, Warnanagar.Patent is filed through IRCC. FurtherDissemination through: RegionalJaggery Research Centre, Kolhapur(ICAR-New Delhi) by conducting“Training Programmes” for Jaggery unitholders using the Novel Processdeveloped will be considered.

Presentations/participation inconferences/workshopsDr. Sanjeeva Srivastava, Department of Bioscienceand Bioengineering was the convener of the TargetedProteomics Workshop and International Symposium(TPWIS-2015) from December 10 – 14, 2015followed by GIAN proteomics course from December10 – 19, 2015. In total, 7 parallel events wereconducted at IIT Bombay during December 10 -19,2015 with over 700 participants. As a result, thisevent has been featured as a pioneer event in thearea of proteomics from all around the world and hasbeen highlighted as one of the highest forum forproteomics globally by the Human ProteomeOrganization (HUPO). This brings India at theforefront of Proteomics alongside other globalleaders in the world.

resonance imaging and hencecould potentially be used for bothcancer diagnosis and anticancertherapies. The folic-acid-conjugated magnetic nanoparticlespermeated the membranes ofcervical cancer cells moreefficiently than normal cells. Thenanoparticles released moredoxorubicin at low pH levels thanat the higher pH levels that prevailin physiological environments. This suggests that undesired drugrelease from the nanoparticles canbe restricted. Additionally, Thedoxorubicin-modified nanoparticlesgenerated heat under AC magneticfield, and killed cancer cellsalmost more than 90%. Thecombination of doxorubicin andheat shrank the nuclei anddamaged the DNA of the cancercells, triggering their controlleddeath.

“Besides enhancing therapeuticefficacy, the modifiednanoparticles could protectanticancer drugs from degradationby enzymes in the bloodstream,”says lead researcher DhirendraBahadur.

Targeted Proteomics Workshop and International Symposium

Prof. Bahadur D, Department ofMetallurgical Engineering andMaterials Science. Paper titled“A pH-responsive folateconjugated magnetic nanoparticlefor targeted chemo-thermaltherapy and MRI diagnosis’, hasbeen published on the cover ofDalton Transactions, AnInternational Journal of inorganicchemistry Published by.

The paper has also beenmentioned in an article titled“Nonoparticles ferry anticacadrug”, published in the NatureIndia Section of the NPG. Thearticle is reproduced below foryour convenience:

Nanoparticles ferry anticancerdrug

Researchers have synthesizedpH-sensitive, folic-acid-conjugated magneticnanoparticles that can efficientlydeliver the anticancer drugdoxorubicin to target cancercells. These nanoparticles arealso capable of killing cancercells by generating heat when anexternal magnetic field is applied.Furthermore, they are useful ascontrast agents for magnetic
