Twenty sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Served by the Discalced Carmelite Friars

Matthew 21:28-30

"My boy, you go and work in the vineyard today."

He answered, "I will not go", but afterwards thought

better of it and went. The man then went and

said the same thing to the second who answered,

“Certainly, sir”, but did not go.

26th Sunday of the Year Yes or No?

This Sunday’s readings speak about making choices – moral choices and the

consequences of those choices. The Parable of the Two Sons which is unique to the

Gospel of Matthew is probably one of the most easily understandable of all the

parables of Jesus. It describes a situation we can all identify with and one that we

surely all have experienced. It is a parable about obedience and disobedience. It is

about compliance and rebellion. It is about changing one’s mind in a positive way

and changing one’s mind in a negative way. It is fundamentally about the choices we

make in life. It is a parable of YES or NO.

Christian Parrots

Pope Francis speaks out against 'Christian Parrots' who talk about religion but don't

do good deeds! He says that forgiveness can be difficult but is necessary in all cases.

“If I say I am Catholic and go to mass, but then don’t speak with my parents, help

my grandparents or the poor, go and see those who are sick, this does not prove my

faith, there’s no point,” he told young residents of Guidonia, a village near Rome.

“Christian faith is expressed with three things: words, the heart, and the hands.”

St. Vincent de Paul and Vinnies

The Mandurah conference will celebrate the feast of St. Vincent de Paul on 27th Sept

Sunday at 6.00 pm Mass. We are very fortunate to have the presence of Vinnies in

our parish and I take this opportunity to thank the members of Vinnies for their

dedication and commitment to serve the needy and downtrodden people of our area.

We are having a special collection for Vinnies in this week end masses and you will

find the envelopes in the church. You may also find a special page on Vinnies

programme in our bulletin this week.

Online talks on St. Therese

We celebrate the feast of St. Therese on 1st October. She is a role model to thousands

of people around the world. Our Carmelite house in New Delhi is organizing a three

days Webinar in preparation for the feast of St. Therese of Lisieux on 28, 29, 30

September 2020 from 9.00 to 10 pm. The resource person for the classes is Dr. Fr.

Gabriel Maliakkal, OCD. He has visited our parish earlier. If you are interested,

kindly join with us on GOOGLE MEET using this link. https://meet.google.com/

Fraternal Charity” Day 03: “St. Therese’s experience of Prayer”.

October Rosary

October is the month of Rosary. It is good to see that our church has a filial devotion

to our Blessed Mother and we recite everyday our holy Rosary at 7.05 am before the

daily mass. We are planning to have a ten days evening special devotion of the holy

Rosary in our church from 22nd October onwards. You will be informed of the

details in the coming days. Have a beautiful weekend,

Fr. Johny Arattukulam, OCD

FIRST READING

A reading from the prophet Ezekiel 18:25–28

The word of the Lord was addressed to me as follows: ‘You object, “What the

Lord does is unjust.” Listen, you House of Israel: is what I do unjust? Is it not

what you do that is unjust? When the upright man renounces his integrity to

commit sin and dies because of this, he dies because of the evil that he himself

has committed. When the sinner renounces sin to become law- abiding and

honest, he deserves to live. He has chosen to renounce all his previous sins; he

shall certainly live; he shall not die.’

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps 24:4–9

R. Remember your mercies, O Lord.

Lord, make me know your ways.

Lord, teach me your paths.

Make me walk in your truth, and teach me:

for you are God my saviour. R.

Remember your mercy, Lord,

and the love you have shown from of old.

Do not remember the sins of my youth.

In your love remember me,

because of your goodness, O Lord. R.

The Lord is good and upright.

He shows the path to those who stray,

he guides the humble in the right path;

he teaches his way to the poor. R.

Guardians ROSTER will BE

Cancelled on Monday, 28 September,

due to public holiday.

SECOND READING

A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Philippians 2:1–11

If our life in Christ means anything to you, if love can persuade at all, or the Spirit

that we have in common, or any tenderness and sympathy, then be united in your

convictions and united in your love, with a common purpose and a common mind.

That is the one thing which would make me completely happy. There must be no

competition among you, no conceit; but everybody is to be self-effacing. Always

consider the other person to be better than yourself, so that nobody thinks of his

own interests first but everybody thinks of other people’s interests instead. In your

minds you must be the same as Christ Jesus:

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew 21:28–32

Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people, ‘What is your opinion?

A man had two sons. He went and said to the first, “My boy, you go and work in

the vineyard today.” He answered, “I will not go”, but afterwards thought better of

it and went. The man then went and said the same thing to the second who

answered, “Certainly, sir”, but did not go. Which of the two did the father’s will?’

‘The first’ they said. Jesus said to them, ‘I tell you solemnly, tax collectors and

prostitutes are making their way into the kingdom of God before you. For John

came to you, a pattern of true righteousness, but you did not believe him, and yet

the tax collectors and prostitutes did.

Even after seeing that, you refused to

think better of it and believe in him.’

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

SOLAR PANELS For over 12 months the Finance Committee have investigated the installation of solar panels for Our Lady’s Assumption Church in Mandurah.

The process involved 3 members selecting different installers for comparative purposes and a final selection. The process lead us to a

company called Regen Power based in Canning Vale.

Their offer of 36 panels from Canadian Solar matched to a 10kW 3 phase inverter from Fronius provided the best option. The power generated will cover that used in the Church, the Parish Centre and the Presbytery.

Canadian Solar is a global company founded in 2001 in Ontario Canada and has since spread across many countries. It employs over 13000 employees world wide. It has an Australian head office and service centre. Fronius was established by Gunter Fronius in 1945 as an electrical repair shop in Pettenbach Austria and entered the solar energy industry in 1991 and the first inverter in 1995. Since then the company exists in over 30 countries. As this decision to install solar is basically a financial one this project is expected to pay for itself in just over 3 years. During this time the performance will be monitored regularly to see if it is viable to install battery backup to cover night time use. - David Thompson (Parish Finance/Maintenance Committee)

Feast of St Vincent de Paul this Sunday Sept 27 2020

The Mandurah conference will celebrate the Feast of St Vincent de Paul this Sunday evening September 27 at the 6pm Mass. All are welcome. St Vincent de Paul is known throughout the world as the Patron Saint of the Poor.

The Youth group has agreed to Vincentians taking on the roles usually done by the young people just for this special occasion, except we will continue to enjoy their music ministry. We are incredibly grateful for their generous spirit. We will also be conducting the Vinnies Local Community Appeal that night.

Our Mission The St Vincent de Paul Society is a lay Catholic organisation that aspires to live the gospel message by serving Christ in the poor with love, respect, justice, hope and joy, and by working to shape a more just and compassionate society.

Our Vision The St Vincent de Paul Society aspires to be recognised as a caring Catholic charity offering

“a hand up” to people in need. We do this by respecting their dignity, sharing our hope, and

encouraging them to take control of their own destiny.

At this weekend’s Masses Vinnies will conduct our first Vinnies Local Community Appeal which will replace the annual Winter and Street Appeals for 2020, and our usual door collections after Mass. COVID 19 has impacted everyone including Vinnies. Our income has been significantly reduced through our Vinnies Shop closures, and we have not been able to collect money at the Church door. We have been fortunate to receive bequests this year, and the Church Poor Box has been well supported, but Mandurah Conference income will be well down on previous years. However, Vinnies WA continues to provide the Mandurah Conference with the funds it needs to make a difference in peoples’ lives. How to donate – donations over $2 are tax deductible Donate Points - Next weekend Vinnies volunteers will offer “Donate Points” at each door where you can tap your bank debit or credit card and a $4 donation will go directly to Vinnies by contactless donation.

Envelopes – These are available this weekend and next for you to please take home. You can either add cash, or complete the credit/debit card details, tear off the sheet and place inside. Seal the envelope and bring it back next week for volunteers to collect at the door. You can also leave envelopes at the Parish Office who will forward them to the Conference. The card details will remain secure as the unopened envelopes will go straight to Ozanam House for processing in the Finance Department.

By phone - call Vinnies 13 18 12 – be sure to say it is for Mandurah Local Community Appeal Donate Online - www.vinnies.org.au. Click on Donate at top right of screen, then scroll down to “Give to a local cause”, make sure WA is selected, then click on WA Local Community Appeal. Enter amount, select “Once” or “Monthly”, then “Next Step”. Enter your contact details, select whether you wish to receive updates from Vinnies, and enter “Mandurah” in comments box, then proceed to “Payment Options”.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY – Jim Mather, President of Mandurah Conference, St Vincent de Paul Society WA. 0427 956 794

Something to Think About

There are people in the world who promise to do something, but never get around to it. Then there are those who seem reluctant to get involved but later decide to join in fully! Can you think of some examples in your own life?

The Story In today's gospel, a father asks his two sons to go and work in his vineyard. The older son refuses, but later he changes his mind and goes out to work. The younger son tells his father he will go, but he doesn't. Jesus used this story to show the importance of following God with our actions. Like the younger son in the story, the Jewish leaders said they would obey God but did not. They refused to follow the Messiah! It was the outsiders - the tax collectors and others considered 'sinners' -who listened and followed. This is another example of the mystery and reversals evident in God's Kingdom.

Like Jesus Christ, forced to flee.

Welcoming, protecting, promoting and integrating internally displaced persons Father, you entrusted to Saint Joseph what you held most precious: the child Jesus and his Mother, in order to protect them from the dangers and threats of the wicked.

Grant that we may experience his protection and help. May he, who shared in the sufferings of those who flee from the hatred of the powerful, console and protect all our brothers and sisters driven by war, poverty and necessity to leave their homes and their lands to set out as refugees for safer places.

Help them, through the intercession of Saint Joseph, to find the strength to persevere, give them comfort in sorrows and courage amid their trials.

Grant to those who welcome them some of the tender love of this just and wise father, who loved Jesus as a true son and sustained Mary at every step of the way. May he, who earned his bread by the work of his hands, watch over those who have seen everything in life taken away and obtain for them the dignity of a job and the serenity of a home. We ask this through Jesus Christ, your Son, whom Saint Joseph saved by fleeing to Egypt, and trusting in the intercession of the Virgin Mary, whom he loved as a faithful husband in accordance with your will. Amen. Rome, Saint John Lateran, 13 May 2020, Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Fatima.

Prayer included in the Message of His Holiness Pope Francis for the 106th World Day of Migrants and Refugees 27 September 2020 (published St Columban’s Mission Society)

A LETTER TO THE FAITHFUL REGARDING DEVELOPMENT OF A COVID-19 VACCINE

Friends, I take this opportunity on the Feast of the Exultation of the Holy Cross to share the perspective of the Catholic Church in Australia to development of a vaccine for COVID-19. Many Catholics have sought advice from the bishops about the ethics of a vaccine, which has been discussed widely in Australia in recent weeks. Early in September I met with the Federal Health Minister to discuss vaccines for COVID-19, following a letter I wrote to the Prime Minister in July. It was an opportunity to thank the Minister for the Government’s decision to pursue a COVID-19 vaccine, and to affirm that the bishops urge the provision of ethically uncontroversial vaccines. This would encourage the best possible vaccine coverage in our population. The development of a vaccine is vital in order to save human lives and bring the pandemic to an end. Nevertheless we have to be mindful of how vaccines are developed and discourage research that fails to respect the dignity of unborn human life. That is why Catholic bishops around the world are advocating for ethical development of vaccines. Some vaccines have been and are being developed using cell lines of tissue derived from abortions, sometimes performed decades ago. As people of faith concerned for the common good, we cannot accept abortion, and we advocate for vaccines to be produced without reliance on human tissue derived from an abortion. Where there is a choice, we encourage people to use a vaccine that has not been developed using human foetal cells deriving from abortion. The bishops accept that the use of an ethically compromised vaccine is acceptable if no other option is available, in order to protect lives. A statement from the Pontifical Academy for Life in 2017 titled Note on Italian vaccine issue offers a summary of the ethical reasoning for this: http://www.academyforlife.va/content/pav/en/the-academy/activity-academy/note-vaccini.html The Federal Government has announced agreements with two groups working on a vaccine at this stage. These are the Oxford University AstraZeneca (AZD1222) and the University of Queensland/CSL Limited (V451) vaccine projects. The AZD1222 project is being developed using a cell line derived from kidney cells taken from a child aborted in 1972. People have asked whether it would be permissible to use such a vaccine. If no other vaccine becomes available, the morally serious objective of protecting lives makes such a vaccine permissible.

It is our understanding that the V451 project does not use cell lines taken from an aborted child but uses a human ovarian cell line. For this reason, it appears to be an ethically acceptable option.

A vaccine can take a long time to develop and make available. As we await what we ardently hope for, we commend the Government for all it has done to protect the community, and we pray that both scientific researchers and political leaders will favour the ethical development of a vaccine, respecting human life in every circumstance.

Yours sincerely in Christ Jesus,

Most Rev Peter A Comensoli, Archbishop of Melbourne Chair, Bishops Commission for Life, Family and Public Engagement

By Fr Anson Antony OCD

STS. MICHAEL, GABRIEL AND RAPHAEL Angels are messengers from God. Three of the special messengers mentioned in the Bible are the archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. The names of each of these archangels tell us about the work God gave them to do. Michael’s name means “who is like God.” God gave Michael the responsibility of protecting us as God protects us. Gabriel’s name means “God is my strength”. Gabriel is God’s hero because he communicates God’s message to people. We remember Gabriel best for being the angel who announced to Mary that she would be the mother of God’s only Son. Raphael’s name means “God has healed.” In the Bible, Raphael heals a blind. ST. JEROME Jerome was born in the country we now call Croatia sometime between 340 and 347. He was tutored at home and developed a love for education. When he was about 12, his parents sent him to Rome to study both Greek and Latin. Jerome was baptized a Christian in Rome. He then studied with some of the great Scripture scholars of his time. Jerome felt that God was calling him to use his education to serve the Church. Jerome was ordained a priest at Antioch and given permission to devote his life to study and writing rather than ministering to the people of a parish. He needed quiet for his studies, so he moved to the wilderness to live a life of silence and simplicity. In the wilderness, he began to study Hebrew, to copy books by hand, and to write letters defending and explaining the faith. Each of these tasks prepared Jerome for the great work he was yet to do. Pope Damasus called Jerome to Rome to be the papal secretary. In addition to those duties, Damasus asked Jerome to translate the Gospels from Greek into Latin, the language of the Church. Jerome’s translation of the Gospels was more accurate than any other version available at the time. After Damasus died, Jerome travelled throughout the Holy Land and eventually settled in Bethlehem, where he built and became the spiritual director of a monastery. His duties allowed him the freedom and silence he needed to translate most of the Old Testament from Hebrew (which he had learned in the wilderness) into Latin. He is said to have died around the year 420. ST. THERESE OF LISIEUX In 1873, Therese was born in the small French town of Alencon and was raised in a loving family with her four sisters. When Therese was four her mother died, and her father moved the family to Lisieux, a town about 50 miles away, so that he and his daughters could live with his brother. Therese’s older sister, Pauline, became like a second mother to her. At the age of 15, Therese became a Carmelite nun, following in the footsteps of her three older sisters, including Pauline. As a young nun, she saw a vision of the baby Jesus. She believed this was a sign from God. To her, it was a reminder that even though she was a small woman, she was great and strong through her love of God. Therese knew that she would never be able to perform great deeds, but she proved her love for God by doing little things that received no recognition. She smiled at people she did not like. She ate whatever was on her plate without complaining. She took the blame when she was not the one at fault. She called this "the little way." This "little way" has become a model for ordinary people who are seeking to live holy lives. Therese was also a very good writer. She wrote an autobiography that tells the story of her life and her love for God. She became ill in 1896 but did not tell anyone, suffering in silence. She died in 1897 when she was only 24.She was canonized in 1925, and in 1997 Pope John Paul II proclaimed her a Doctor of the Church. THE HOLY GUARDIAN ANGELS The doctrine of angels is part of the Church's tradition. The role of the guardian angel is both to guide us to good thoughts, works and words, and to preserve us from evil. Since the 17th century the Church has celebrated a feast honouring them on 2nd October. “No evil shall befall you, no scourge come near your tent for he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways” (Ps 91:10-11) designates the guardian angels. Our Lord says in the Gospel, “See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven(Mt.18:10)
