28th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Christian author C.S. Lewis once wrote that Christianity is not so much about being nice people but in being “new men.” We see this contrast intoday’s Gospel. “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus #rst answers in the predictable way. Follow the commandments! ”Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth.” Perhaps for some of us it’s easy to answer this way. “I’m a good person!” he seems to reply. Does he truly follow all the commandments he professes to follow? Does hein work and deed check off all the boxes of the moral law? Perhaps. Whether he’s being honest or fudging the truth, Jesus accepts his answer at face value with compassion. “Jesus, looking at him, loved him.”

But he’s not done yet! Jesus wants to remind us that this attitude alone is not enough. “Go, sell what you have then come, follow me. “Jesus’ invitation to the young man is radical. Abandon everything that gives you any sense of security. Give it all up for an unknown future with a wandering preacher.

The Christian life is not easy. “How hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!” It’s easier, Jesus says, for a gigantic camel to squeeze itself through a tiny needle’s eye. But the God of the universe creates out of nothing, breaks the bars of hell, and raises the dead to life. Is a needle’s eye really such an obstacle? Jesus’ invitation is always bigger than our own limitations. This week, what do we need to offer up? How is Jesus inviting us to follow him?

Follow Him Matthew 16:24

“May you use the gifts that you have received and pass on the love that has been given to you.“ St. Teresa of Avila

Are we content and satised with the bare minimum and essentials of our faith, or do we desire excellence an prociency? The Ten Commandments represent the minimum and, if we are honest with ourselves, are pretty easy to keep. The fullness of the Gospel, however, is another story. Truly living as Jesus taught often comes with great selfsacrice, selfemptying, and possibly leaving the things of this world behind. Are we ready to pursue this kind of life? God wants us to live and love abundantly not supercially. Love asks that we extend ourselves beyond the status quo and the bare minimum and venture into that which is risky, countercultural, and even radical. What we possess can no longer be important. When Jesus laid this out before the rich young man, he went away sad because he had much. When Jesus lays it out before us, how do we react?

Recognize God in your ordinary moments

“Grant me the wisdom to see Your will for my life and courage to follow that will. “ It is a request for true discernment to see that God’s will is always more important and fruitful than my own will. It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking happiness and fulllment lie in doing what I want to do and following my own wants and desires. Our entire secular culture is lled with that message. However, that road has led to many to a place on emptiness and regret. I must pray to keep in the forefront of my mind that God created me on purpose and for a purpose. Being wise enough to see that purpose is the key to true satisfaction in this world.

Giving our gifts and talent in only ways we want to means that we become deaf and blind to the numerous times Jesus Christ calls us to give. We also easily avoid any form of real sacrice, which often leads us to give only from our excess. Wisdom allows us to see where we are being called, even if we are unsure what increase will result from our investment. Our trust is no longer in the gift given but instead in the One who is calling us to give. When our lives of generosity and compassion are ordered in this way, it is hard for anything to steal our joy away. Our purpose is found, our aim is true, and our desire is fullled.

October is Mental Health Awareness month:

An estimated 322 million people live with depression. Losing a loved one, getting red from a job, going through a divorce, and other difcult situations can lead a person to feel sad, lonely and scared. These reactions to life’s stressors most people feel low and sad at times. However, in the cases of individual who are diagnosed with depression as a psychiatric disorder, manifestations of low mood are much more severe and they persist.

Depression occurs, more often women. It tends to manifest as sadness, worthlessness, and guilt. In men it manifests as tiredness, irritability and anger. They may show more reckless behavior and abuse drugs and alcohol. In younger children depression is more likely to manifest as school refusal, anxiety when separated from parents, and worry about parents dying. Depressed teenagers tend to be irritable, sulky, and get into trouble in school. They also frequently have anxiety, eating disorders or substance abuse. [reference ADAA]

 From Jan….

Life has changed since 1950, 1976 and 2001. Besides not driving the same cars, we live in a much different culture today.

"The whole Church, especially the laity, at both the diocesan and national levels, needs to be engaged in maintaining safe environments in the Church for children and young people." Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, (USCCB)

To help achieve this, we follow the guidance of the Diocese of Great FallsBillings and the United States Council of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). Safe and Sacredis the name of the safe environment and child protection program of the Diocese of Great FallsBillings. Catechists, staff, and all volunteers 18 years or older, who minister to or work with minor children or vulnerable adults must meet all the requirements of this program. The Diocese requires thefollowing ministries to participate:

All Parish/School Staff Babysitters for any ministry Chaperones Youth Group Ministry Maintenance (school/parish) Catechists Children’s Lit. of the Word Ushers Cathedral Choir RCIA team(List is not exhaustive)

Also, because of insurance mandates, and the fact that St. Patrick CoCathedral is a downtown church faced with concerns stemming from homelessness, drugs and alcohol, we are asking ushers to not only take the Safe and Sacred training but also be able to confront security and emergency issues.

There will be one assigned usher at each Mass who will remain in the gathering area, occasionally walking through the social center to insure the safety of those who come to worship. Others in the hospitality ministry (including other ushers and greeters) will be helping with tasks during Mass.

More ushers and greeters are needed in order to insure that individuals aren’t scheduled more than once a month. Contact Jan Wood for more information.

We are asking that nurses, paramedics or doctors participating at Mass inform an usher of your presence in case of an emergency.

Thank you to those who are helping to make our parish a safe place for all.
