Every month the last thing I do before I put an issue to bed, is write this letter - and every month I wonder if that is such a good idea. It usually comes from a place of creative overload, delirium, exhaustion, frustration, and yes, some satisfaction. I often wonder if anyone really even reads this. Or could I put a bunch of gibberish (more so than it is) and no one would be the wiser? (There’s that exhaustion and frustration sneaking in.) After three and a half days of non-stop work (really, non stop. If you could see me now, at my dining room table, you would get it) I have completed the largest issue of TUSK to date. Not entirely alone, my husband Shane supports me the entire way. He actually rubs my shoulders while I’m working and makes sure I at least eat something at night. Not to mention he edits the entire issue when It’s completed. Of course, the last three 14 hour days are really just the icing on the cake; the time when I bring everything I have been working on over the last month to the table. Designing each page and making it all fit. I often wish I had additional time to focus more on my page design, but after coming up with feature ideas, interviewing folks, writing stories, and photographing everything, I am plum out of juice. Of course, I am really not complaining. I do this because I love it, well, I must love it, right? I do love producing TUSK each month, and more than anything I love the people that I meet because of it. I also love the opportunity it has afforded me. It has always been a dream of mine to own a company that gives back and supports people doing great things. In fact, I have decided to put together an event for TUSK this month; the “Lucky Number 7” party and fund-raiser. With a little prodding from some very special people in my life I am having a party to celebrate TUSK , my hard work, and all the incredible people that have been featured in the last seven issues. The cherry on top is that with the support of all kinds of outstanding Denver people, I will be raising money for The Delores Project via a raffle. Please come support TUSK on Friday July, 30th at 7 p.m. There will be music by DJ SKEEM, drinks, incredible prizes, a video with TUSK photography, art, event photography by the amazing Anna E. Chavez and lots of good people to spend an evening with.

I look forward to seeing you then!

Cheers!DeniseOwner of Faddis [email protected]

I love Japanese food, especially sushi, and there is no season I like it more than summertime. The perfect time of year, when you stay up a little later and seem to eat a little lighter. I love to go out for sushi, but have also enjoyed trying to make it home and eat in my own backyard. I have managed to make sushi rolls a time or two, but I still have lots to learn. Luckily, my friend Yasu just let me know about this very cool new class he is offering at Den Deli. I will most definitely be checking it out. It is being taught by one of Sushi Den’s sushi chefs. Here is more information if you can make it.

Sushi-making class at Den Deli given by one of Sushi Den’s sushi chefs! After the class, we will have a dinner with the sushi you prepared

in class. Your meal consists of 20 pieces of sushi, complimentary miso soup and green tea! In the class, you will learn the step by step process of how to make sushi at home. You can get party ideas from this class also! If you are interested, please contact our store manager.

TUSK: One of my favorite places to go for a night out is Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret, especially on the nights you host the burlesque show. Tell us about yourself and your show.I am from the Basque region of Europe; I am a Basquard. I traveled here to produce a knock-out show featuring performers from all over the world. Burlesque is the main feature each night (old fashioned teasers, no pole dancers), but there are all kinds of comedy mixed in. We have these amazingly sensual dances that never get dirty, and never get threatening, because it is all tongue-and-cheek, good old-fashioned fun, and I break the ice with my stories and puppets and silly songs. Some nights you see jugglers, some nights a magician, but never the same line up twice. You know, this show is a perfect date night. And Bachelorette parties, no kidding you, they come down a lot.

TUSK: What is the best part of hosting a burlesque show? What’s the best part of being on a stage, delivering my own material, in between acts where gorgeous ladies slowly tease their vintage costumes off? Hmm… I can’t think of one thing.

TUSK: What is your favorite thing about living in Denver? The nice thing about living in Denver is that you know you’re not living in Greeley. But seriously, I do very much enjoy the weather, the mountains so close, and a very lively nightlife if you know where to look.

TUSK: What’s something most people don’t know about you? They think I am wearing a fake mustache. But I am not. I am wearing eye-liner on my upper lip.

TUSK: Do you have any favorite restaurants or places you frequent in Denver?

You are most likely to spot me at Steuben’s for their food, or Cheeky Monkey for their Belgian beers. Belgian peoples may be fat, but they make good beers.

TUSK: Who or what is your biggest source of inspiration? If you have ever watched Lannie Garrett (headliner at the Clocktower) you will know that you are watching a truly gifted entertainer. She writes her own shows, produces and directs them, and then blows audiences away, week after week. This I find inspiring; makes me want to keep getting better.

TUSK: Is there anything that people often assume about you that is not true?I think peoples might believe me to be loud, joke telling, bravado ALL the time, not just during the show. This is not true. Sometimes I am quiet. Like when I’m asleep, say, or in prison.

TUSK: What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?“Don’t eat half-price sushi in Wyoming”

TUSK: Favorite late night treat?Oooo, it’s the worst. There can be nothing worse than the one thing I sometimes go eat at 2am on my way home. Chicken Fried Steak with gravy, at any all-night diner. Fatty McFatterson.

TUSK: How can TUSK readers find out more about you?I am on facebook and myspace, but to find out much more, you just come hang out with me at a show. You’ll hear more stories than you can schick a stake at. T

Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret has an abundance of talent and impressive shows on any given night, however, Naughty Pierre’s Burlesque show takes the tassel.

When most folks think of a taking a trip to spend some time tasting wine, they may fly to Tuscany or Napa Valley, but you may not know that all you have to do is head North from central Denver. A ten minute drive from Downtown and you have an opportunity to visit with one of the warmest, and most welcoming families I have ever met. As well as, taste some of the most unique, flavorful, and easy drinking wines I have sampled.

Balistreri Vineyards is a family-owned and operated winery that was established in 1998, however, they are far from transplants. John Balistreri’s family has been in the Denver area since the early 1900’s. They specialize in handcrafted wine that is produced one barrel at a time. And if you like natural, you could not choose a more appropriate winery. Balistreri wines are hand-picked, crushed and fermented with natural wild yeast. With numerous medals and awards under their belt they have successfully managed to put Colorado wines on the map. John Balistreri, his wife Birdie, and their daughter Julie run the show and have a way of making you feel like you have personally been invited to a family get together every time you visit.

I have had the opportunity to get to know Julie Balistreri a little bit over the last few months, and it has truly been

my pleasure. In fact, I have only met a handful of people like Julie in my lifetime. She has that rare and special personality, disarming charm, smarts, and a smile that makes you smile right back. Today I spent a few hours with Julie at Balistreri Vineyards, taking photos, trying wine, and

enjoying the company. A few weeks back she was nice enough to sit down and answer some questions for TUSK.

TUSK: How long has Balistreri Vineyards been around? Our Winery was started in 1998 and we produced our first 22 barrels of wine,

approximately 500 cases. We now produce over 5,000 cases of wine per year.

TUSK: I love that Balistreri Vineyards is so close to town, why did you all decide to choose your location in the heart of Denver? My dad’s family has been here since the early 1900’s. They used to farm much of the land around here. In 1965, my mom & dad started growing cut flowers, so we’ve always been here. We used to make homemade wine here. We like our centrally located location and we don’t see any reason to move. Our grapes come from the Western Slope of Colorado on refrigerated trucks so we do not have to be located where the grapes are grown.

Balistreri Vineyards is home-grown artistry at it’s best. Located in the heart of Denver, this award winning winery is something our community can be proud of. Julie Balistreri sits down with TUSK to share some wine wisdom.

TUSK: What’s your favorite part of running a Vineyard?I really enjoy sharing the wines that we love and drink with others.

TUSK: What makes Balistreri Vineyards unique? Our wines are made completely natural. Our grapes are hand-picked, crushed and fermented with the natural wild yeast. They are also unfined, unfiltered, unaltered by sulfites, and barrel-aged in American Oak. It is very difficult to find wines made as natural as ours.

TUSK: What percentage of your grapes are from Colorado?98% of our grapes are grown in Colorado.

TUSK: What makes Colorado grapes different or special? The Colorado red varietals tend to have intense, complex flavors that have a spiciness that shows through in the

wines from many of our vineyards.

TUSK: What is your favorite varietal? One of my favorite varietals is Syrah because Colorado Syrah’s tend to have such brilliant spice to them.

TUSK: What is the best glass of wine you have ever had?Totally unfair question. There are so many.

For more information on Balistreri Vineyards, got to www.balistrerivineyards.com or just stop by. The Winery is open for tasting and tours seven days a week from 12-5pm. T

TUSk • Health• Total Body Wellness

When you meet someone this passionate about what they do, it is contagious. When you work with them to better your-self, it is a commitment you will see and feel.

Story and Photography by Denise Faddis

TUSK: What does the term Total Body Wellness mean to you?Know that I do not have a rule set in stone about “Total Body Wellness”, the concept changes for me on a daily basis depending on what my needs are. Often “Total Body Wellness” is not entirely a physical state of being but a mental state as well. Physical and mental are interchangeable for me. Eat well, sleep well, choose happiness, play, exercise, breathe, listen, love, etc. all equal “Total Body Wellness” to me.

How do you help your clients achieve Total Body Wellness?I facilitate Total Body Wellness by using Therapeutic Massage Therapy and the Pilates method. I have been a massage therapist for 9 years and have always leaned toward medical massage and therapeutic massage in my practice. I regularly incorporate deep tissue, sports massage and injury rehabilitation techniques into my sessions but I have recently decided to add Neuromuscular massage, Cranio Sacral therapy and Pilates instruction to my repertoire.

Neuromuscular massage therapy is geared more toward chronic pain issues like constant jaw pain, restricted range of motion, chronic headaches and pain. It is very detailed and specific in nature. Though it sounds very serious please know that this type of work is all based on the clients level of tolerance. So if the client feels that the pressure is adequate then that’s the pressure we use. The client is in control of the level of intensity at all times. Its nice, you get exactly what you need, the hurts so good feeling. Its

Page 13: TUSK July 2010

13 TUSK faddiscreative.com July, 2010

extremely effective in relieving chronic pain issues in nearly every part of your body.

Cranio Sacral therapy is an in depth treatment to the bones of the head and tailbone with special attention focused to the cerebrospinal fluid that circulates through the system. It sounds like quite a mouth full. In short, I reset this system with tiny, almost unnoticeable movements that allow your body to function at its best possible level. Once the system is regulated you may feel more clearheaded, relaxed and peaceful. Almost as if you have just come out of a deep meditation. Anything from PTSD, migraines, TMJ disorder to anxiety, stress and sleep disorders show signs of improvement with regular treatments. Its really profound and I’m super excited to be adding these types of body work into my sessions.

Finally, I use Pilates to help my clients achieve Total Body Wellness. Pilates is a wonderful way to not only strengthen and stretch your body but also to create awareness of your entire body from head to toe. Its challenging, fun and anyone of any age or ability can do it. At Pilates Aligned I get to teach my clients with fun machines like the Reformer, the Pole system and the Chair. All of these machines utilize springs for resistance training and have parts and pieces that move to challenge you during all of your exercises. The best part is that there are literally hundreds of exercises to try. There is such a variety that you never get bored and can always find the right movements perfect to meet your level and goals. Pilates fits so nicely with massage therapy that I often combine the two. Its a lovely way to rehabilitate and strengthen a body.

TUSK: What do you love most about working in the wellness field?Exactly that, being surrounded by wellness. I get to work with the most amazing instructors and clients, all of which are looking to better themselves. I get to be a facilitator in my clients process of achieving wellness. Its so much fun to me to watch the person change and meet their goals. I am often inspired by my clients. I am truly happy to be in this line of work. TUSK: You recently taught a class at LuLu Lemon in Cherry Creek, are you going to be teaching more classes in the community this Summer?Yes! I really wanted to make myself available in the community this summer so what I decided to do was to create what we are calling the “ FREE community mat class”. This class is meant for the people in the Denver community who have never tried Pilates but have always wanted to. Its a mat class, but you do not have to bring a mat with you. Just wear comfortable clothing and show up 10 minutes early to fill out new client paper work. It’s a fun, upbeat class where we explore the mat exercises. Everyone

in class is welcome to ask questions and have fun. Its a great way to see if Pilates is right for you TUSK: I love the idea of combining Massage Therapy with Pilates, what are the benefits of combining them into one session?OOh, I love this combination. This is what I would call my ultimate specialty. The combination of massage and Pilates can make profound changes in your body. The way I like to begin is to do a thorough evaluation of the body, paying special attention to posture, strengths, weakness, tightness, movement patterns, etc. Then I like to talk to my clients about what their personal goals are. What would they like to see change? Together, we make a customized plan. Next we do a 55 minute Pilates session. Here I teach proper movement patterns, strengthening and stretching muscle tissue to improve posture and alignment. After that we move into the massage room to free up any restriction that may be hindering your body’s ability to reach its goals of better movement, decreased pain and increased strength.

After a number of these sessions (Usually 10) there is often a visibly noticeable change in your body. You feel stronger, more flexible, relaxed and free of pain. Plus you look amazing. Which is great, right? It’s a really unique way to change your body. I feel so lucky to be able to offer such a great service to my clients.

TUSK: Your home base is Pilates Aligned in Denver. Why did you choose them over other studios in Denver?Well, simply put, I thought this was the best Pilates studio in Denver. Cara Reeser, Owner of Pilates Aligned, is a 2nd generation Master Instructor. This means that her mentor (Kathy Stanford-Grant) was taught directly from Mr. Joseph Pilates himself! That is very rare these days. Cara’s Pilates instruction stays true to the source and comes from the heart. She teaches workshops all over the states and all over the world. Instructors from everywhere come to Pilates Aligned to learn what Cara has learned and she loves to pass her experience on to others. All of the instructors at Pilates Aligned are super smart and genuinely supportive of their clients and of each other. When I saw all of this in Pilates Aligned it attracted me. I knew I wanted to be at a studio with these standards. Plus, Pilates Aligned feels like a community. Everyone is very welcoming and fun. I just love to be around that kind of energy. When they asked me to join their staff I was like, “Wow, me? I can’t say no”. I was so excited. I’ve been there 3 years now.

TUSK: What do you love most about Pilates? And Massage?I love that both create a space for you to become aware of your body. So often, through injury or pain, we shut our ourselves off

“Total Body Wellness is not entirely a physical state of being but a mental state as

well. Physical and mental are interchangeable for me.”

Page 14: TUSK July 2010

14 TUSK faddiscreative.com July, 2010

to our body. We literally become numb or ignore those places. Through Pilates and Massage you gain a different perspective. You get a new view that you can actually feel your body and that it has the ability to feel good. It’s almost like you get the tools to treat your body better and what to do when your body isn’t feeling its best. Through Pilates and massage we are educated on how to support ourselves in a new way. If we put a little time and focus into our bodies they will reward us in endless ways. That’s a huge gift.

TUSK: Do you have a favorite client success story?I know this sounds cheesy but no, not one story stands out in my mind. Every client has a success story. Some are more dramatic than others but even the small successes count.

TUSK: What do you love to do when you are not working?I like to spend some good quality time with my husband. I like to kick back and relax with my friends, listen to good music, eat good food and have a nice glass of wine. It’s very important to me to stay active in the most fun way possible so I like to hike, ride bikes, hula hoop, swim, and get some fresh air. I also like to watch movies and read in my down time.

TUSK: What do you love about working in Denver? The people and being centrally located. Denver people are active. We like to get outdoors, move and play a lot. Since the people of Denver tend to have an explorative attitude and like to try new things, they are a lot of fun to work with. They also need a lot of work. And there are always fun events in Denver, its usually easy to find something to do.TUSK: What is something most people don’t know about you?I have a lot of really great and long time friends. Some have been friends for 20 years now; this includes my husband. I’m proud of that.

TUSK: How can TUSK readers learn more about you or schedule an appointment with you?You can check out my web site; it’s awesome. www.shannonbriese.com or you can e-mail me at [email protected]. I would love to hear from you. T

TUSk • Everyday VS. Sommelier

Summertime means hot weather, pools, and watching the sunset from our balcony. And with summer weather, brings a thirst for a cold glass of white wine. Here’s some of our favorites, all under $20. These are wines we feel are varietally correct, and offer great bang-for-the-buck. We’ll let you in on a little secret about white wines: most are served way too cold. If you serve the wine fresh from your fridge, you’ll notice the acidity is over-pronounced. Give the wine about 15 minutes to sit out, and you’ll notice enhanced flavors and aromas. We may be newlyweds, but we’ve been enjoying most of these wines for years together.

St. Innocent Pinot Blanc, Willamette Valley, Oregon $15Pinot Blanc is a genetic mutation of Pinot Noir. This wine is full bodied, bone dry, and bursting with aromas of pineapple, grapefruit, green pepper and slate. It’s oily texture is backed by a strong acidity, making this an excellent food wine. Pair it with seafood (especially shellfish like mussels), chicken and creamy sauces. Our favorite pairings are with raw oysters and sushi.

Clos LaChance “Hummingbird Series” Unoaked Chardonnay, Monterey County, California $13We don’t usually have Chardonnay in our glass, especially domestic Chardonnay. They’re typically too oaky, creamy and fruity for our taste. But this is a great example of a crisp, clean California Chardonnay. Since it sees no time in oak, you don’t get those heavy vanilla, butterscotch or dill flavors. This exhibits notes of stone fruits, apple and pineapple, with a nice citrus finish. The quality vs. price is so great, that we decided to pour this one at our wedding (and it was a big hit with our guests).

Bodegas Naia “Las Brisas,” Rueda, Spain $11This blend of Verdejo, Viura, and Sauvignon Blanc delivers a refreshing balance of fruit, minerality and acidity. The peachy, grapefruit nose follows through on the palate, with a nice herbaceous, citrusy finish. And the best part is this low price tag makes the wine great for cooking as well (we love using it when we make mussels). Pair it with seafood, lighter meats, and salads.

Tupun Viognier, Mendoza, Argentina $13Viognier is a grape originally cultivated in France’s Rhone Valley. But recently it’s been planted all over the world, including Australia, California and South America. Aromas of honeysuckle, peach and citrus are balanced with flavors of apricot, peach and a slight

hint of French Oak. This is a perfect match for grilled fish or chicken.

Il Follo Prosecco “Extra Dry,” Valdobbiadene, Italy $15Nothing makes a summer day like a glass of bubbles. While true Champagne can demand high prices, there are plenty of delicious sparkling wine alternatives that won’t hurt the pocketbook. Prosecco is Italy’s answer to sparkling wines, made from the Glera grape (which before 2009 was referred to as the Prosecco grape). The reason why this Prosecco stood out to us is it’s unique tangerine and orange flavors. While it is bone dry, it shows more fruity characteristics due to the yeast strain they use during fermentation. One of the beauties of sparkling wine is the ability to pair it with almost any food accept for chocolate. This wine holds a fond place in our hearts, as we served it for the toast after our wedding ceremony.

All of these wines are available at Joy Wine & Spirits, at 1302 E. 6th Ave in Denver. This local, family owned shop offers 10% off two or more bottles on Tuesdays, so do your shopping then. Like TUSK, we too feel strongly about supporting the locally owned businesses in our neighborhood.

TUSK: I love the idea of a husband and wife team when it comes to wedding photography. Tell us about yourselves and Fritschel Photography? We have been married for almost 8 years. My (Drew’s) passion for wedding photography started when we attended friends and families weddings and I would bring my camera along. I was intrigued by how much emotion and beauty can be captured on that special day. When I would give the couples my photographs, they would often tell me that they wished they would have hired me to take all of their pictures. My wife, Juliana, began to have an interest in learning photography after I was hired for my first wedding. Working together, we are able to provide two different perspectives of the same celebration. She stays with the bride to capture the moments of anticipation, while I portray the groom as cool, calm and collective (yeah right).

TUSK: What is the best and worst part of working together?(Drew) The best part is always shooting for that perfect picture, the one I wish we would have had at our wedding. The worst part is my wife teasing me about eating too fast at weddings so I can get back to photographing.

(Juliana) The best part is sharing our ideas and laughter with each other while at work. The worst part is deciding what music to

listen to in the car on the way to and from work.

TUSK: What is your favorite thing about living in Denver?(Drew) My favorite thing about living in Denver is the seasons. All four seasons happen here. My other favorite thing is the people.

(Juliana) My favorite thing about living in Denver is that when I go an hour to the west, I can be in the mountains, an hour to the east, I am in the plains, and if I am in the city, I can go to a museum, the theater, or a great place to eat.

TUSK: What’s something most people don’t know about (you?(Drew) I come from a line of huguenots. They were religiously persecuted French Protestants. And I really like rhubarb.

(Juliana) I am a first generation American. And I really like argyle socks.

TUSK: Do you have any favorite restaurants or places you frequent in Denver?(Drew) The mussels at The Cheeky Monk off Colfax, Tom’s Diner for late night breakfast, Denver Art Museum for inspiration, The Botanic Gardens for relaxation.

“The best part is always shooting for that perfect picture, the one I wish we would have had at our wedding.”

Page 18: TUSK July 2010

18 TUSK faddiscreative.com July, 2010

(Juliana) All of the above and Dumitri’s

TUSK: Who or what is your biggest source of inspiration?(Drew) The world around me. The relationship between man & nature is often over looked.

(Juliana) Positive energy from others, young to old, inspires me. These feelings are contagious and spark my own thoughts & ideas.

TUSK: Who is your favorite artist?(Drew) Some of my favorite artists are Maria Sena, Terry Richardson~ Roy Lichtenstein ~ Kathy Olivas ~ Beth Bojarski ~ Mark Traughber ~ Reina Mia Brill ~ and any photographer who hasn’t been inspired by Helmut Newton should stay home and play with paper plates.

(Juliana) My favorite painters are Vargas and Mark Ryden and my favorite photographer is Ellen Von Unwerth.

TUSK: Is there anything that people often assume about you that is not true?(Drew) People assume that photographers have huge egos. There is a difference between having a huge ego and a healthy ego. I’m one of the most down to earth, caring, compassionate people out there.

(Juliana) People assume that because I am petite, I am not very strong.

TUSK: What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?(Drew) Starting from an early age, my mom always told me “Be the best at what you do. Whether you want to be a doctor or a garbage collector, be the best one you can.” I try to take this into my photography. I try not to take a photo just to take a picture. I believe that it should have substance to it. If it can provoke a thought, a feeling, an emotion, then its all worth it.

(Juliana) “Believe in yourself.” If you follow that advice, doors will open and you will follow a path to what is right for you.

TUSK: Favorite late night treat?(Drew) Without a doubt, carrot cake!!!! You gotta love that frosting!!

(Juliana) Licorice. And not just any licorice, it has to be Twizzlers.

TUSK: You are one of the go-to make-up artists in Denver, tell us about yourself and FireLily Concepts.Well, FireLily Concepts actually covers a broad spectrum of my interests and things I do. From the makeup artistry, to creative direction, to event/party production. On the makeup artistry side of FireLily Concepts, I’ve been doing makeup for over 10 years and there’s so many things I enjoy as a makeup artist. I get to be creative and turn a face into a work of art. When I’m teaching, I get to empower women with new skills. At weddings the bride is counting on me to help her look her best.On the event side, I conceptualize, produce and promote events. I started doing this in 2005 out of a real desire to bring tastemakers, fashionistas and music feigns together. I saw so many groups of people doing amazing things, but they were really separate from each other, and was I like, “Do you know so and so? Well what if you did? What would happen then?” So I started throwing parties to bring these people together. Party slangin also became a way to create the type of event that I really wanted to go to and in this found other party people that had the same desire as me, so we started throwing some awesome events.Overall, I like coming up with ideas and executing them, wether it’s a party or a photo shoot, or a new project. And sometimes they overlap. I have thrown a party just to get a certain shot I was looking for.

TUSK: What is the most memorable project you have ever been a part of ?On the artistry side, doing makeup for Democracy Now! during the 2008 Democratic National Convention. While it didn’t push the boundaries in my artistry, I got to meet and do makeup on some really amazing people: Ralph Nader, Danny Glover and Daryl Hanna. And Amy Goodman, the host, is so incredibly sharp. Impressive is an understatement.I’ve got a little activist in me, so it was awesome to be on set and get to hear about all the issues. On the event side, whew, there’s been some great ones. First there was Refresh Fridays, a weekly that ran at Vinyl night club. We (Behanzin Event Group, Up Front Entertainment & DJs MU$A, LowKey and Sounds Supreme) got to host some amazing Hip Hop acts like Slick Rick, Pete Rock and Digable Planets. This was one of the top Hip Hop nights in the nation, so it was really cool to be a part of that. And Shoe Shine was one of my favorites to produce along with the creator Musa Bailey. It’s a sneaker art show and I really think this event did the most to bring different people in the community together. I could take up 2 pages speaking to the importance of this event, so to sum it up: Culture, Art, Sports, Fashion, Youth, Community, Inspiration. And most recently, bringing Electric Punanny to Denver. It’s a party out of NYC, that fuses dancehall, electro, hip hop and dance music. This event was so fun and working with the Electric Punanny crew was beyond a pleasure. The individual

talents of Jasmine Solano (MC & DJ), MeLo-X (MC, DJ & producer) and TONE (photographer & videographer) are already impressive, and together they embody the movement happening in the underground arts, culture and music scene.

TUSK: What is your favorite thing about living in Denver? The talent. The Creatives. Artists, musicians, photographers. The people who work behind the scenes to push the boundaries. We’ve got some great ones here. Big up yourself!

TUSK: What’s something most people don’t know about you?Oh, I don’t know. What do you not know about me folks? What do you want to know?

TUSK: Do you have any favorite restaurants or places you frequent in Denver?I lived in New Mexico before I lived here, so I always love to go to Jack-n-Grill. And I’m really excited about the new Beauty Bar that just opened.

TUSK: Who or what is your biggest source of inspiration?By far my son. And then people. All you creatives out there.

TUSK: Who is your favorite artist?Oh my, where do I start!? How are we defining “artist”? There’s so much amazing talent here! I’ve had the pleasure of getting to

know and work with a lot of artists here.

TUSK: Is there anything that people often assume about you that is not true?Hmmm, I think all I have to say to that is, “What people think of you is none of your business.”

TUSK: What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?Work hard and be nice. Although, I think I give myself and others that advice.

TUSK: Favorite late night treat?Cookie ice cream sandwiches and chili cheese fries, or a burrito from Pete’s.

TUSK: How can TUSK readers find out more about you?firelilyconcepts.com and firelilyconcepts.com/eventstressLastly, I like to add that it always take others to attain your goals. And without all the amazing talent around me I would be nothing. Throughout my endeavors there’s been so many amazing people I’ve gotten to create with and partner with, and I am so grateful. T

THE DELORES PROJECT

The Delores Project is named for Delores Big Boy, a Lakota woman who frequently lived on the streets of Denver. Her situation was complicated by health, developmental and substance abuse issues, as well as physical and sexual violence.

Although Delores sought aid from various Denver agencies, sadly, she fell through the cracks in the system. Delores died while living on the streets June 8, 1999. In forming the shelter in 2000, we chose to honor her memory so that we could always continue our work with a commitment to ensuring safe shelter for every woman and support for those in transition.

Did you know:

* In 2009 The Delores Project sheltered 515 individual women. * There are approximately 1,606 single women who are homeless in Denver on any given night.* * There are approximately 125 emergency shelter beds for single women in Denver. * The Delores Project sheltered an average of 54 women each night in 2009. * Over 31,000 meals were served at The Delores Project in 2009. * Each month 10–20% of the women working with our transitional advocate will move into a more permanent living situation. * On average women stay at The Delores Project for 101 nights. *Number determined by Metro Denver Homeless Initiative Point-in-Time survey in January 2009.

Alone

Edgar Allan Poe

From childhood’s hour I have not been As others were; I have not seen As others saw; I could not bring

My passions from a common spring. From the same source I have not taken

My sorrow; I could not awaken My heart to joy at the same tone;

And all I loved, I loved alone. Then- in my childhood, in the dawn Of a most stormy life- was drawn From every depth of good and ill The mystery which binds me still: From the torrent, or the fountain,

From the red cliff of the mountain, From the sun that round me rolled

In its autumn tint of gold, From the lightning in the sky

As it passed me flying by, From the thunder and the storm, And the cloud that took the form

(When the rest of Heaven was blue) Of a demon in my view.

A DreamEdgar Allan Poe

In visions of the dark night I have dreamed of joy departed-

But a waking dream of life and light Hath left me broken-hearted.

Ah! what is not a dream by day To him whose eyes are cast

On things around him with a ray Turned back upon the past?

That holy dream- that holy dream, While all the world were chiding, Hath cheered me as a lovely beam

A lonely spirit guiding.

What though that light, thro’ storm and night, So trembled from afar-

What could there be more purely bright In Truth’s day-star?
