The TUSK Lucky Number 7 party and fundraiser is behind us, and I am so grateful for all the amazing support I received! I could not have done this on my own and it fills me up with pure joy to think of all the people that came out and supported me in my efforts. Trying to pull off an event like this truly reminds you of whom you can count on in your life. Do to the many contributors, I am happy to report that we were able to raise $1,215.00 for The Delores Project, as well as two very cool paintings completed by the great people that took the time to come out to the event. The paintings are now hanging at The Delores Project for all of the women to enjoy. You can see the first completed painting on page 12 and loads of great images taken by Anne E. Chavez from the event. Also, check out pages 24 and 25 to see the list of all the generous supporters that donated prizes for the raffle. If you are ever in need of any of the services they offer, please try to patronize them any way you can.

Look for a special story on pages 26 and 27 by a new contributing editor, Stacy Nelson. Her and her husband Sam spent a few days enjoying a couple Colorado day adventures and have all the information you need to plan your own.

TUSK has been a bit of a wild card from it’s conception and I have taken it as it has come. I have been enjoying all the lessons learned and people I have met along the way. TUSK will not be going away anytime soon, however, the monthly full issues will be. Rather than produce monthly issues, I have some other fun things in store for you all. The TUSK website will be updated weekly with new images, stories, and events. I’m guessing there will also be full issues in the future, however, they will be released as I have time and as I meet wonderful people on my journeys that deserve to be featured.

Cheers!DeniseOwner of Faddis [email protected]

On the cover:

Those very cool tusk sculptures on the cover were created by my talented mother. She made them for the TUSK party and they added so much to the decor. I now get to decorate my home office with them. I decided they would be the perfect cover for the final full issue of TUSK. Thanks Mom for all your support.

Below is just one of the many decorations my friend Stacy donated to the TUSK event. She is very creative and her additions to the party were perfect.

Good times had by all at the TUSK Lucky number 7 party, including me. Rock on, it’s been real.

[TUSK] What is the Lobbycast?[Sam] We are a weekly podcast that is sponsored by a website (pregamelobby.com) that caters to mature gamers. We talk about movies, TV shows, and video games. We have three regular hosts on the show; Geoff Olsen, Lou Adducci and Sam Nelson. [TUSK] How did you guys get started? [Geoff] All three of us are members of pregamelobby.com and we really enjoy the people there and the times we’ve spent with them gaming. Sam and I owned a movie and video game store here in Denver that just closed, and we were looking for a new challenge. We approached the owners of the website and they were very excited about the podcast idea, and they’ve been a tremendous help getting us started. [Tusk] What do you guys talk about, is it just video games?[Lou] While video games take up the bulk of the show, we start each episode off with TV and Movie news. One of our first segments in the podcast is what movies are coming to the theatre this week, what movies are coming out on DVD and Blu-Ray, and then we discuss some interesting TV and movie news. Last week we talked about the curious choice of who is playing the new Hulk in the upcoming Avengers movie.[Sam] And we don’t just talk about it. For each of our podcasts we post up show notes at pregamelobby.com/lobbycast; there you can go and watch trailers for all the movies coming out, as well as find links to all of the articles we talked about, and give us your take on what we talked about. [TUSK] What else is on your show?[Geoff] After movie news we move to video game releases and then video game news. Since our sponsor is a gaming community, we delve into trends in video games, rumors and speculation, previews, and some interesting stories. Last week we showed an incredible trailer for DC Universe Online, talked about the addition of space combat to the highly anticipated Star Wars: The Old Republic, and discussed the dutch gamers who broke the non-stop gaming record. [Sam] On of our favorite segments is the Weekly Whatcha’s, where

we talk about what we’ve been listening to, watching, and playing this last week. While we are recording our show, we have a chat room going were some of our followers watch and listen, and we get them to chime in with what they’ve been up to. It’s very cool to be interactive with your listeners.[Lou] That is something we just added to our show, a live video broadcast of us recording the show that can be found at ustream.com. Followers of the show keep an eye on our twitter feeds to learn when we are going to record, which are usually on Sunday nights. Then they can join us in the chat room and interact with us during the show. [TUSK] So what game is everyone going to be buying this

Christmas? [Geoff] Not a game, but an add-on to your system. Sony is coming out with the Playstation Move, an upcoming motion-sensing game controller for the PlayStation 3. Microsoft is coming out with Kinect, a controller-free gaming and entertainment experience that uses a camera and you are the controller. [TUSK] How long have you guys been doing this?[Sam] Our first episode was in March of 2009,

we did it a test but it turned out pretty good so we published it. We’ve done a show every week since then. [TUSK] Where can I find your podcast?[Geoff] Geez, where can’t you find us? You can subscribe to the podcast through iTunes or the Zune Marketplace (PGL Lobbycast), you can also go to the website (pregamelobby.com) and listen to our show through your PC and see all of our show notes. You can watch live streams of our show and join our chat room at ustream.com, as well as watch recordings of past episodes. You can join our Facebook page and you can follow us on Twitter for update on when we are recording (lobbycastgeoff and lobbycastsam). [TUSK] Anything big coming up in the future?[Sam] Absolutely! Geoff and I are headed to Seattle in early September for the Penny Arcade Expo, a semi-annual gamer festival where we are going to meet up with some friends from pregamelobby and try and snag some interviews while we are out there.

TUSK: James, you have spent years as part of Denver’s Hard Core music scene as the guitarist for Killing Kings, now you are the lead singer in All Set. How did All Set originate?

All Set got together shortly after Killing Kings had broken up. I was seriously contemplating giving up on playing in bands for a while after the bullshit with KK, But Nate and Mike, who also used to play in Killing Kings, wanted to keep playing . We hooked up with our pal, Coon, to play on the bass. We decided to try myself out on vocals. After some trial and error and a lot of PBR, we have found our groove....

TUSK: Now that you’re a singer, do you miss playing the guitar during shows?

Honestly, I am having a lot of fun on the vocals right now. I really do not miss lugging around a ton of guitar equipment all the time. There may be some songs in the future where Mike and I both play guitar and share the vocals, but for now Mike is exclusively the guitarist.

TUSK: What do you like best about being the singer in All Set?

I have a lifetime of frustrations and aggravation that I can vent through music with my brothers. I really enjoy playing with these guys. We’re all good friends. I also enjoy feeling the energy that comes with being a vocalist. It’s a rush.

TUSK: What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die...

TUSK: Who are the other members in the band?

Nathan on the drums, Mike on the guitar, and Sean on the bass. Other wise known as Nasty Nate, Blackie Chan, and Coon.Coon is the Denver native, The rest of us are from Massachusetts

TUSK: Who writes the lyrics for All Set?

I write 90% of the lyrics. Mike usually writes his verses and back-ups.We’ve all been know to chime in time to time. If someone has an idea we put it to use. It’s a group effort.

TUSK: My favorite part of your shows is being part of the energy you all bring to your sets. Is it cathartic for you to get on stage and kill it like that?

Absolutely. Nothing cleanses the soul like preforming music. We love getting the crowd involved. Hardcore is a high energy genre of music. People come to shows to sing along, pit, stage dive, whatever. We feed off that energy and throw it back at them through the music.

TUSK: What was your first ever live show? How old were you and what to you remember most about it?

I remember when I was 14yrs old way back in ‘94, Green Day decided to play a free show outside in Boston. We all hopped on

It doesn’t matter what kind of music you prefer, you can’t help but appreciate the stage presence and passion All Set brings to the table. TUSK Magazine sits down with the lead singer, James LeBel, to learn more.

the train and went down to check it out. Once word got out that it was free, the place got jammed and got out of control. A small riot broke out and Green Day grabbed their instruments and ran off stage like scared little kids.

TUSK: What’s the best advice you have ever been given?

Remember where you came from.

TUSK: What do you like most about Denver?

When I first landed here in CO, I was way blown away by the Mountains. I never get sick of looking at them even though I’m used to seeing them now. The people are cool too, and it seems like everyone is from somewhere else. This is my adoptive home town.

TUSK: What is your favorite artist/band?

I grew up on Underground bands like Sick Of It All, Madball, Biohazard. But I also like underground Hip Hop music as well.

TUSK: Favorite late night treat?

Late nite ice cream with the wifey. You can’t beat it!

TUSK: Do you play any other instruments?

Yeah, I’ve played bass and guitar in other bands for years. The vocal thing is new for me. Maybe someday I’ll jump behind a drum kit and go full circle with instruments. I also have a Didgeridoo, drum machines, and a sampler.

TUSK: What is the strangest thing that has ever happened to you?

Once I was driving up I-25 and someone pulling a trailer broke an axel. Their tire came rolling right at me and I had to dodge it doing about 60mph. Not even 30 seconds later, a mattress flew out of the back of someone’s truck and came right at me. I still don’t know how I missed that one. I took the hint, and got the hell off the highway.

TUSK Lucky Number 7 Party & Fundraiser

On July 30th, lots of incredible people came together to support TUSK and help in raising $1,215.00 for The Delores Project .The evening consisted of great drinks, food, an art station for guests to join in on a collective paint-ing, an opportunity to have your photo taken by the talented Anna E. Chavez, sounds by DJ SKEEM, and two raffles with all prizes donated by generous local companies. The majority of whom have been featured in previous issues of TUSK. The night turned out to be a great success and together we raised $1,215.00 for The Delores Project, as well as two paintings that include thoughts of love and hope for the women at The Delores Project.

TUSk • Outdoors• Colorado Day Trips

27 TUSK faddiscreative.com August, 2010

Denver locals certainly appreciate the beautiful views that the mountains provide but you don’t have to be an avid skier, snow boarder, hiker, or bicyclist to get enjoyment out of the mountains or the beautiful city of Colorado Springs to our south. It’s about enjoying our state and seeing new places that are not so far away, and anyone can do it. On a couple of different Saturday’s, my husband and I decided to have some adventures of our own. We chose Red Rocks and Morrison in the foothills for one escapade and Garden of the Gods and Seven Falls near Colorado Springs for the next. We didn’t have to travel for more than an hour or so out of Denver for either. When people ask why do they love Colorado, the first thing most people mention are the mountains. But how often do we really take advantage of them? Our goal is to experience more of our state since we have plenty to do just outside our front door. Sure, we camp in the summer, spend time at the local parks (we live near Wash Park) and have toyed with the idea to hike a 14er, but we wanted a new quest that was close to home and that would only take up the afternoon. On this particular, beautiful Saturday afternoon we decided to head to Red Rocks Amphitheater; not to see a concert, but just to hike around and enjoy the scenery, all for free. After our hike, we decided to visit the quaint town of Morrison and the Morrison Inn for a margarita, which sounded really appealing after a hike!If you’re not interested in buying lunch, keep your adventure cost efficient and consider packing a lunch for you and your loved ones. Keep it simple. Pack a light picnic for the family; sandwiches, snacks and water, etc. If you’re on a romantic adventure, consider packing some wine. Either way, don’t forget the blanket. This goes for just about any outdoor exploit you plan to tackle. Remember, it can be economical. After hiking around the amphitheater grounds and checking out the Red Rocks Museum, we headed to town which was only five minutes away, and took a seat on the patio at the Morrison Inn. There, we listened to live music and reflected on our day over their famous margaritas. As we ate, dreary gray clouds gathered overhead, and

were determined to share the day with us. The clouds decided to open ever so slightly and drizzle from the sky as if only to cool us off from our hiking expedition. Perfect timing, if you ask me. As with any weather in Colorado, if you don’t like it, wait five minutes and it will change. It did. The sun came back out we finished off our margaritas and headed home. Our other adventure was a bit unplanned. The night before, we had been thinking of things we could do that were new to us. We had a couple of ideas in mind and decided we would go with how we felt in the morning. We woke to a gorgeous summer day and decided to head to ”The Springs” to visit Seven Falls. It’s a place neither of us had been before, but had always heard wonderful things about, and we got in for under $10.00 dollars per adult.About an hour drive south of Denver, Seven Falls is easy to find until you reach the local high school and neighborhood; then you begin to wonder if you are still heading in the right direction. Don’t worry, you are. Watch out for the deer that cross in the middle of the busy road; they come out of nowhere and catch you off guard. You also might find deer just outside the park entrance gates grazing on the side of the road waiting to have their picture taken. The gate entrance gives the impression that you are about to enter an amusement park. If you think about, you are: your very own nature made amusement park for you to enjoy. A beautiful cascading waterfall, hiking, nature and a steep set of stairs await you within. Be prepared: the stairs are quite a climb and can be difficult to maneuver but are worth it to see a view of Colorado Springs like never before. We look forward to going back another day during the evening and/or holidays to observe the falls lit up at night. After a few hours at Seven Falls, we realized Garden of the Gods was right on the way home and so decided to take advantage of the opportunity. There are plenty of scenic areas to explore, pictures to take, and even get in a little hiking as well. While we didn’t get a chance to enjoy everything, we noticed that Garden of the Gods also offered guided tours via hiking, horseback, and even Segways. For those more adventurous types, you can also try your hand at rock climbing. So get out there and enjoy everything Colorado has to offer!

Every day is an adventure; it’s what you make of that day that counts. We are all aware that spending time with friends and family is important and in these difficult times it has forced many to get creative and find inexpensive ways to have fun. My suggestion? Just head west or south from Denver and enjoy. Story & Photography by Stacy Nelson

WOMEN’S BEAN PROJECT

Nourishing Lives

Since 1989 we have been helping women break the cycle of poverty and unemployment. We are a nonprofit organization that teaches job readi-ness and life skills for entry-level jobs through employment in our gour-met food production business. Women come with the goal of transform-ing their lives and moving toward self sufficiency.

Jossy Eyre founded the Women’s Bean Project in 1989 as a result of her volunteer work at a day shelter for homeless women. Eyre saw that while the shelter kept women safe, if could not help them make lasting changes in their lives. Eyre bought $500 worth of beans and put two homeless women to work - the first step in building the social enterprise we are today. Our training op-portunities have expanded dramatically over the years, and annual operating budget has grown from $6,100 to over $1.5 million.

In 1993, King Soopers became the first grocery store to carry our products.

In 1995, we purchased former Fire Station #10 from the City and County of Denver, and moved to our new home the following year, giving us permanent roots at 3201 Curtis Street.

Today our product offerings have expanded to salsa mixes, spice rubs, coffee beans, and jelly beans in addition to our soups and chili, along with gift bas-kets, baking mixes and much more.

Alone

Edgar Allan Poe

From childhood’s hour I have not been As others were; I have not seen As others saw; I could not bring

My passions from a common spring. From the same source I have not taken

My sorrow; I could not awaken My heart to joy at the same tone;

And all I loved, I loved alone. Then- in my childhood, in the dawn Of a most stormy life- was drawn From every depth of good and ill The mystery which binds me still: From the torrent, or the fountain,

From the red cliff of the mountain, From the sun that round me rolled

In its autumn tint of gold, From the lightning in the sky

As it passed me flying by, From the thunder and the storm, And the cloud that took the form

(When the rest of Heaven was blue) Of a demon in my view.

A DreamEdgar Allan Poe

In visions of the dark night I have dreamed of joy departed-

But a waking dream of life and light Hath left me broken-hearted.

Ah! what is not a dream by day To him whose eyes are cast

On things around him with a ray Turned back upon the past?

That holy dream- that holy dream, While all the world were chiding, Hath cheered me as a lovely beam

A lonely spirit guiding.

What though that light, thro’ storm and night, So trembled from afar-

What could there be more purely bright In Truth’s day-star?
