This was the name of the child born to James Jones and Ann Jane Walsh Jones at 78 Manchester St., Oldham, Lancashire, England on June 1, 1873. Her father ran an inn named The British Flag. There was nothing unusual about her - in fact, she was quite often described as rather homely. Little did anyone know how well- known this baby would become in adulthood and how her unique talents would win such a large following. The family moved to Philadelphia in 1879, her mother died soon after. Ada’s father remarried and her stepmother, Annie Douglas Maloney, was the one who encouraged Ada to make use of her singing talents by making stage appearances as early as 1883 as “Little Ada Jones”. She had no musical training and learned songs by ear as she was unable to read music or play an instrument. The fact that she refused to learn songs until she got into the studio, resulted in an impromptu, loose style making her sound like she was having fun with her singing. Her style was described as light and chipper. Her voice was said to be contralto with her singing style popular for sentimental ballads, hits from Broadway shows, British music hall material, ragtime and Irish songs. It was discovered that she had a great ability to mimic several different dialects and she made use of this ability in the variety of songs she performed and later in vaudeville sketches. She specialized in singing while colored slides were projected illustrating the song. Live performances proved to be difficult for her as she suffered from epilepsy for which, at that time, there was no known help. Because of this she welcomed the opportunity to make records out of the direct scrutiny of a live audience. On August 9, 1904, she married Eugene Hugh Flaherty (Hughie), an Irishman born in 1878 who was a vaudeville entertainer. They had one daughter, Sheliah, born in 1918, who died at a young age. Her recordings began to gain notice with over two hundred being recorded Submitted by Village of Richfield Springs Historian Harriett Geywits from 1904 to 1917. This was the era of wax records produced by the Edison Company and Ada was considered the “first lady of the phonograph”. Songs like “Shine on Harvest Moon” and “By the Light of the Silvery Moon” were among the most popular. Aside from solo recordings for Edison and Victor records, she teamed up with several partners to produce a variety of popular songs that were on the list of top ten hits. For several years beginning in 1913, Ada recorded steadily. She had had such meager formal schooling that her writing was most often illegible. Others signed autographs in her name for this reason. As the recording sessions became more infrequent by 1916 with the change in the type of music that was popular, Ada went on tour making personal appearances in smaller towns. She had lost most of her followers to the point that in 1918, she was reported as being dead. Her reply was that “Like Mark Twain, I object to being reported dead!” No doubt as a promotion for the record companies, the stores that carried her records and as a way to earn a living, the famous Ada Jones, as part of an Eastern tour, appeared in Richfield Springs in October 1921 at Shaul’s Theater for the benefit of the Richfield Springs Military Band. The event was advertised as follows: “Ada Jones, being the idol of millions on the phonograph, now seen for the first time in person. Thousands of people have heard the voice of America’s best known female singer, Ada Jones, on the phonograph and now they will have the opportunity and pleasure of hearing and seeing her in person on October 31st. As long as life lasts, we shall each of us who see and hear Ada Jones recall the thrills and delights of her records. Miss Jones, from the very start, holds her audience captive with the melodious beauty of her voice and wins the hearts and admiration of all who hear her and her delightful company consisting of Miss Beth Hamilton, violinist, Miss Mabel Loomis, pianist and Armstrong, the Man of Mystery. Enjoy the music, mirth and magic. Come and hear her and help the band to purchase new uniforms.” It wasn’t long after her appearance in Richfield that she was taken ill and died of kidney failure on May 2, 1922. She is buried at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Long Island, alongside her husband who died in 1969. Ada was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Otsego County Office for the Aging (OFA) has launched a new nutrition program for county residents age 60 and older. The Senior Restaurant Dining program is a partnership between Otsego County Office for the Aging and local restaurants that offers older adults a unique opportunity to enjoy a meal at a local restaurant in the community. • To participate, eligible residents must register with Otsego County Office for the

Aging to receive meal tickets for a suggested contribution of $3.50 per ticket.• Up to six meal tickets can be obtained per month.• Once registered, the participant can use the meal tickets at participating restaurants by presenting the ticket to

the wait staff prior to ordering.• The participant will then be provided with a menu offering meal selections that meet one third of the daily

recommended nutrition requirements.• Instead of paying at the end of the meal, the senior will sign and date the meal ticket which will be retained

by the restaurant and submitted to OFA for payment.• Gratuity is the responsibility of the participating senior.• Current participating restaurants include Jackie’s Restaurant in Milford, Southside Diner & Grill in Oneonta

and Red Door Dairy Store in West Winfield. OFA continues to seek participation from local restaurants toexpand the program.

For more information, please contact Office for the Aging at 607-547-4232, visit our department website at www.otsegocounty.com or email [email protected].

Richfield Deserves Better

2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019 - Supervisor Paul Palumbo hires Nick Palevsky to be his personal secretary/bookkeeper.

2020 & 2021 - Supervisor Nick Palevsky hires Paul Palumbo to be his personal secretary/bookkeeper. 2019 - Paul Palumbo and Nick Palevsky put forth a budget with 25.52% tax increase. The board worked it down to 8.9% increase.

2019 - Department of Health sends document to Paul Palumbo to be signed concerning Town ambulance service. Palumbo ignores it. 2020 - Town Attorney and Board urge Supervisor Palevsky to sign Department of Healthdocument to continue Town Ambulance service; the same document Palumbo chose to ignore. Nick refused to sign and service is still disrupted, this has cost residents $2630.00 in unnecessary attorney fees.

2021 - Paul while Supervisor in 2018-19 refused to work on updating local land use law. Nick then put him in charge of a committee to change the newly updated town law and together they have spent over $2900 tax dollars on attorneys so far.

2021 - After the September board meeting Paul Palumbo and Nick moved $49,869.51 illegally from a highwayaccount to a town account without board approval.

Don’t you think Richfield has hadenough of Paul Palumbo and Nick Palevsky?

Ten-Digit Dialing Required Starting October 24thDue to the fact that the planned National Suicide Prevention Hotline will use the three-digit number “988” (similar to “911” now being used for emergencies), any area codes in the United States containing local exchanges of 988 will now require ten-digit dialing as of October 24, 2021.

In New York State there are five Area Codes affected- 516, 607, 716, 845, 914. All calls, including local calls, within those areas will need to be dialed with the 3-digit Area Code.

Sales have been phenomenal this year- were they all in one place, there’d be a 3.5 by 1 mile piece gone from the market. Our inventories are 20% of normal -even at today’s high prices, still they call.

For instance, if you have a waterfall on your land, we have a list of 250 buyers for it. Many with the cash, too.

We badly need farms, dairies, acreage, country homes with land - in all sizes. If you fail to call, 2 parties are going to be disappointed: 1) our buyers & 2) you - for not taking advantage of this unprecedented real estate climate. You know it won’t last. Let’s “Make hay when the sun shines.”

We cover a surprisingly broad area. Call now to see how we make money for you. As a client, your interests become ours.
