"Oregon Is Magic" Mural

e Dalles Area Chamber is proud to be a part of an amazing community that, in only a few short months and with lots of help from many partners, managed to bring a little bit of exceptional art and that special Oregon Slightly Exaggerated magic to e Dalles.

Elizabeth Keenen, Regional Specialist for the Mt. Hood and the Columbia River Gorge, called our oce about a new Travel Oregon campaign titled ‘e Oregon Mural Trail’. Keenen made us aware that there were detailed criteria we had to meet to host the mural and we would be one of seven cities in Oregon to host a mural. Aer working with Travel Oregon for over several years we knew that a campaign like this one would be well supported nancially and widely marketed, so we said YES! We knew that the impact of a project such as this could have an extremely positive impact on our community.

rough the Forest’, a nonprot organization, contacted us to begin the process of rst locating a building. We worked with the newly formed Mural Society, Fort Dalles Displays and Mayor Stephen Lawrence, as to the location, size, and picture. Our rst two attempts to nd a building that matched the criteria were unsuccessful. But as they say, third time’s a charm! e Leeland Property Building, owned by Je and Lori Stiles, met all requirements! Each of the communities had a couple of scenes to choose from for their mural and worked with Travel Oregon, Fort Dalles Displays, and Mayor Lawrence to nd a scene that best represented our area. All the scenes were from the Travel Oregon Campaign “Oregon Slightly Exaggerated’ short video that went viral globally. Once a scene was agreed on then the work began!

Travel Oregon contracted with Blaine Fontana early on to be the artist for the mural in e Dalles. It

was perfect timing as Blaine was already in the area and was busy revealing his talent and artwork on the old Petty John building with the new mural ‘e Valley Gorge Hub’.

On Saturday, October 27, Travel Oregon, TDACC and our partners hosted a Community Celebration and Ribbon Cutting for the mural. Mayor Stephen Lawrence; Elizabeth Keenen; and Todd Davidson, CEO for Travel Oregon, all attended and presented at the celebration. e Dalles Lions volunteered to prepare a pancake breakfast for the crowd and DJ-E provided some dancing, toe-tapping, tunes to help the festivities. e festivities even included the release of a special limited-edition golden raer charm for our ‘Sunsational Charm Trail’. Todd Davidson said during his presentation to the audience “I want to call out a special thank you to e Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce and Lisa Farquharson. Your help, support and enthusiasm for this project has made this a truly special community project”. It was a wonderful day in which several agencies stood united in front of the mural and cut the ribbon with the giant scissors.

We cannot thank Travel Oregon enough for the nancial and market awareness that this campaign will bring to e Dalles and the surrounding area. e number of times e Dalles has already been mentioned by Travel Oregon’s campaign and other news agencies, since the press release from Travel Oregon has been o the charts!!!!!

e Dalles Area Chamber just wants to say THANK YOU to all those who helped make this happen!
