Tundra as a Biome
By: Jassim Al Thani
Introduction
A tundra is a barren mass of land that does not have any trees, but usually has some small plants and rocks.
They are located in very cold land in the artic.

Weather and Climate
Artic tundra's have very little rainfall and are very cold and dry.
The winters are very long and the temperatures can be as low as -50.
The summers are only a few weeks long and the day light lasts 24 hours per day.

Animals That Live in Tundra

Caribou
Lemmings
Artic hares
Foxes

How Animals Adapt to Living in Tundra
Some hibernate in winter
Some have their babies in the summer
They have thick fur for the cold
They survive on other animals in the food chain

Plants in Tundra
Lichens
Mosses
Small shrubs

How Plants Adapt to Tundra
They are short and very tight together to protect them from the cold and wind harsh environment
They manage to get their energy from the sun
They use small amounts of energy

Abiotic Factors That Affect Plants and
AnimalsAverage rainfall is only about 10 inches
each year.
Winters are 10 months long and the temperatures can reach 50 degrees below 0 Celsius.
Summers are only about 6 weeks long and the maximum temperature is 10 degrees.

How Abiotic Factors Affect Plants and
Animals Plants and animals have to make
adaptations to adjust to the harsh tundra environment
The low rainfall, cold temperatures and poor soil make the plants grow very small
Also it can be very difficult for animals to find food

Human Activities That Affect Tundra
Drilling for oil and gas
Mining for minerals
New towns and roads
These can be good because oil exploration and mining can create jobs for people

Negative Impact of Human Activities
Pollution The affect on the ecosystem of the
tundraIt can affect the feeling patterns of
the animalsIt can affect animal and bird migration

How to Reduce Negative Impact of
HumansCreate environmental awareness of
ecosystems and pollution
Have strict government regulations
Minimize disturbances on ecosystems
