We are all very proud of our great banding program and wish all bands every success. A special thanks to band coordinator Mr David Goeldner, bandmasters Mr Michael Bell, Mrs Jo Cook and Ms Susan Philippa for our bands’ great preparation. Thank you to the band parent support group who also assisted with transport and equipment.

Congratulations Baton Twirlers: Rori Wood and Violet Turner competed at the Australian Baton Twirlers National Championships over the long weekend. They competed in a duo and two different team events. They finished 3rd in one team, 4th in the other team event and finished in the top 7 in the duo. The girls faced some tough competition, with many girls in their age group receiving their award celebrating their 5th year of twirling - yet Rori and Violet have only twirled for 6 months. This has spurred the girls on and both plan on competing in even more events next year and have their sights firmly set on Nationals 2015 in Rockhampton. Congratulations girls!

Congratulations Mia Doyle: Mia took part in the NSW Figure Skating Championships on Saturday 4th October @ Canterbury Ice Rink. This was her first time skating at the NSW Championship and was the youngest competitor at only 8 years of age competing over the 3 day competition. She won her division of Elementary Ladies and also had a PB with her score beating the second place competitor by more then 2 points! It was a fantastic result for all the hard work, training and dedication that takes place 5 days per week before and after school!

Building Program news: The covered walkway at the end of A block leading down to the Uniform shop and P&C room is now complete. This will provide all-weather access to these rooms for the comfort of all. We extend a huge thank you to our general assistant Terry who completed the assembly of the walkway during the school holidays. The Infants COLA has had artificial softfall surface applied during the vacation. This wonderful resource is now appropriately decorated with game court markings, a map of Australia and mushroom seats for the benefit of our students. Have a look at both of these P&C / school-funded projects which have further enhanced the school environment for our students, staff and parents. 2015 Student Enrolments: We are now being asked to provide anticipated enrolment numbers for 2015. We are particularly interested in securing our 2015 Kindergarten enrolments as the Kinder orientation meetings are organised for later in Term 3. All students who are 4 ½ to 6 years of age are entitled to start school in 2015 in our Kindergarten classes. If you have students who are in this age group, or know of families of students in this age group, or any neighbours who currently attend other schools and would like to attend Eleebana PS in Kinder to Year 6 in 2015, could you (and tell them to) please contact the school office for an application form for enrolment. Thank you everyone.

Spring Fair: The major P&C fundraiser, our Spring Fair is fast approaching (Saturday 18 October). Armbands for 4 hours of unlimited rides will be available for sale when school returns in Week 1 Term 4. Selective High Schools including Merewether HS: Are you already thinking about your child’s Year 7 placement in a selective school in 2016? Selective high schools are government high schools that cater for highly-achieving, academically talented students by offering an educationally enriched environment. Application for entry to a selective high school in Year 7 in 2016 will be online only, from 14 October, 2014. You’ll find more information about selective schools and dates for examinations here: http://bit.ly/selectiveHS

Tricks for encouraging kids to read: your child a reluctant reader? Why not try helping them find the book that goes with a movie or DVD they've enjoyed, or are about to see. Encouraging your child to read can help them to build their imagination as well as giving them a better vocabulary. Kids who read different types of books develop a wide range of language skills and are better placed to understand different types of texts as they progress into high school. School A to Z has lots of tips and ideas on encouraging your child to read, at http://bit.ly/HLPmB9

How much water does your child really need? Staying hydrated is even more important during the warmer months. Every part of your body needs water to work properly and dehydration can lead to painful kidney stones. Many people don't feel thirsty until they are already dehydrated, so packing a drink bottle with your child's school lunch is a good reminder for them to drink during the day. Sports drinks and juices are popular with kids, but they often contain a lot of sugar. To find out the recommended daily intake of water for your child’s age at http://bit.ly/ZjwUjo

Private tutoring: Are you thinking about a private tutor to complement your child’s education? School A to Z explores questions about what to look for in a tutor, what you would want your child to achieve and tips on what to ask a potential tutor. http://bit.ly/K5aczo

Team sports – more than health benefits: As well as helping kids stay fit and healthy, team sports help them learn that things don’t go their way all the time and that they need to respect their peers. Sports also help children and teens with resilience, how to respond to setbacks and loads more benefits discussed here: http://bit.ly/HlgxVO

Great things I saw Week 10 Term 3: A wonderful and enjoyable Stage 2 Colonial Day.

Great things I saw in the Term 3 Break: Our Monday and Tuesday General Assistant, Terry McGovern has done an outstanding job constructing the covered walkway to the P&C Room, saving the P&C $5000 as we were able to purchase the walkway in DYI kit form. Additionally the softfall purchased by the P&C for the Infants COLA is almost completed!

Have a great week. Dr Carl Leonard
