MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THESE – INCREDIBLE COLLECTIBLES

6BOOTIFUL, BOOTIFUL BOOTY – Dan Carter Rugby Boot – signed

If you’re a rugby man and a fan of Dan, you’ll be kicking yourself if you miss out on this. One of Dan’s pre-World Cup boots. This is the stuff of legends. Dan the man, widely regarded as the greatest and most influential fly half in the history of rugby. How many memories could this one boot bring. Highest test point scorer of all time. World Cup matches (remember his right foot kick in the 2015 final). International test matches. Bledisloe Cup. Crusaders. Plus his happy willingness to work with young people to motivate, enthuse and help them achieve their goals.

Presented in association with Helping Hand.

7YOU MUST REMEMBER THIS – Roger Bannister – 1954 – 1st sub-4 minute mile

A totally rare auction item, personally signed by the man who made history. Just when the world thought all possible physical barriers had been conquered, the athletes of Oxford University conspired to prove otherwise. At the University’s Iffley Road cinder track on 6 May 1954, medical student Roger Bannister achieved “the impossible” – running the mile under 4 minutes. Later that year at the Vancouver Empire & Commonwealth Games he defeated Australian John Landy in the “Miracle Mile”. The live radio broadcast stopped nations world-wide. Even Sunday School teachers fell by the wayside that day to listen-in (after all it was a “miracle”). Capture this piece of history for your walls. Put it in a place of pride. Very few people in the world have a memento as incredible as this.

ART FOR HEART AND SOUL

10LIGHTNING ROD – Rod Emmerson

Rod Emmerson – His sharp-witted, provocative cartoons constantly amaze, delight and challenge. What a brilliant talent. Once again, he is generously making a personal gift of his time and his genius to create a caricature portrait of the purchaser – or some other nominated person. This man is a genius. A cynic. A comic. A cartoonist who will go down in NZ history as one of our finest (even if he started life as an Aussie)! As proud owner of an original Emmerson you will never be lost for a conversation starter at your place.

Sincerest thanks to “lightning” Rod Emmerson. Lightning fast superstar.

11JOHN EDGAR – “Crossing” A Touch Stone of Enchantment

White granite (Coromandel, NZ) Black granite (Shanxi, China)

One touch of this stone and its magic will enchant. John Edgar’s work is technically astounding, sensuously tactile and highly sought-after. In recent auctions, one patron has frustrated all others to acquire John Edgar’s works. His partner advises there is no space for more “so please please don’t let him out-bid you.”

The inspiration for “Crossing” – described by artist John Edgar ONZM “These works started about 20 years ago in my exhibition “Calculus” (which in Latin means ‘small stone used in counting’). The exhibition was of stones with insert of contrasting coloured stone representing numbers and operators – as in multiply, divide, add, subtract. This work is a multiply sign, but it is also a saltire cross, “X” marks the spot, and the sign for a kiss at the end of a letter … amongst many other meanings.”

Thank you John. We know this beautiful sculpture will live happily ever after in loving hands.

12DICK FRIZZELL – “Black Stump”

920mm x 690mm Edition 3 of 100 – framed screenprint on paper, signed and numbered

They say that every picture tells a story, and when the artist is the talented (and sometimes mischievous) Dick Frizzell, you can be sure there is a story. “Black Stump” has a story. It has more than one story. The phrase itself is part of Aussie colloquial conversation. If you’re beyond the black stump, you’re in the middle of nowhere... In the whop-whops. But Dick found his own black stump here in NZ. And this is a wonderfully stark portrayal of it. Put it on your wall and you know there are stories to tell. Bid, buy, enjoy.

Thank you Gow Langsford Gallery. We truly appreciate this donation.

16MEET THE MAKER – How to make a violin, viola, cello, double bass

A hugely popular auction item in previous years, so we persuaded “our maker” to do it again. It’s an unexpectedly intriguing experience. The fine art of making beautiful violins, violas, cellos, double basses – and bows - is not confined to Europe. Nor do the instruments have to be old to be bright and brilliant or mellow and moody or mysteriously enchanting. Here in Auckland, ”luthier” Richard Panting makes some truly beautiful – and highly-regarded – instruments which he sells worldwide. In his resin-scented, timber-stacked workshop he explains and demonstrates the fine art, the painstaking attention to detail, the endless search for perfection, the defining variants.

Thanks Richard for agreeing to do this again. You’re such a cherished part of the APO team.

17GET IN BEHIND THE TOWN HALL PIPE ORGAN

The recently restored and rebuilt Auckland Town Hall organ is a dream come true for our city. But … behind that grand stand of pipes seen out front there is an astonishing labyrinth of over 5,000 more pipes – wood, metal, glass – extending from the basement up to three storeys high. We are especially privileged to be able to offer an exclusive inside insight tour with specialist organ guide Kerry Stevens. The tour is restricted to four people (there’s not much space back there). We can guarantee a mind-wowing, pipe-blowing, computer-clever experience inside the biggest musical beast you’ll ever meet.

Special thanks to the Auckland Town Hall Organ Trust & APO friend Kerry Stevens.

18HAERE MAI – AUCKLAND MUSEUM – A GREAT “GO-TO” PLACE

Auckland Museum – when did YOU last go there? It isn’t a fusty old thing. It’s full of life. Ever-changing. Ever-challenging. It’s our place of pride, in pride of place atop the Auckland Domain. It’s a top spot to visit. And there’s a really fantastic gift shop on-site. You’ll be surprised and delighted with the lively atmosphere. The inter-active exhibits. The special sections for young people. The special one-off exhibitions. To get you started: Auckland Museum has given us a voucher for a surprise pack from the gift shop and four complimentary passes to one of the live and lively Maori cultural performances. It’s a wonderful learning experience – steeped in tradition and right up to date; with a definite WOW factor.

Grateful thanks to Auckland Museum – part of the rich fabric of the Auckland scene.

19WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DIAL “111” AND SCREAM “FIRE”

Find out. At one of Auckland’s busy fire stations (Avondale, Mt Roskill or Balmoral). This extraordinary offer from the NZ Fire Service is for four to be amazed at the inside workings of one of our most vital emergency services. If all’s quiet and there are no home fires burning, you’ll have an eye-opening tour of the station, the trucks, the equipment and maybe – just maybe – a ride on a fire-truck. If a call comes in you will see some impressive high-action team work. You’ll learn so much about fighting fires and fire safety, you’ll be going home to install more smoke alarms and extinguishers. Tour for four. At a chosen location and time by arrangement, dependent on rosters.

Special thanks to the NZ Fire Service and Senior Firefighter Maxwell – seriously committed to fire safety and community service.

20CRUISE CONTROL – Tag-along on a Tug

By very special arrangement, Ports of Auckland has agreed to allow three people to be on board one of their working tug boats while they are on the job in the harbour. Strict conditions will apply, but this is a truly exciting opportunity to experience the complex working and interaction of vessels in and out of Auckland harbour (how do you co-ordinate Waiheke ferries with cruise ships and container vessels, fishing boats and yacht races?)

APO is overwhelmingly grateful that the vital heartbeat that keeps Auckland’s port ticking over is happy to support the vital heartbeat of Auckland music.

21GO PADDLING… In a sensational Sea Kayak – at sunset

You won’t be up a creek without a paddle, you’ll be all at sea on the Hauraki Gulf, with a highly experienced guide from Auckland Sea Kayaks taking two of you to Rangitoto on a voyage of discovery. Climbing to the summit you watch the sun set in all its glory. Back to the shore where there’s a mouth-watering kiwi BBQ a-waiting. Then a dream-time night-time starlight paddle back to the city bright lights. Slowly, gently, night unfurls its splendour – and you are a star-struck “phantom of the night”. Truly … it’s that good. Buy it. Try it.

What temptation. Thank you Auckland Sea Kayaks.

22GO FISH… SERIOUSLY

APO’s principal Double Bass player is not only a seriously good musician, he’s also a seriously fanatical fisherman. In recent years Gordon Hill has combined his freshwater fly-fishing happiness with the absolute joy of salt-water fly-fishing close to Waiheke (if you have some hours to spend, he’ll show you some wowsome photos). He’s persuaded some of his best buddies to put together an irresistible package. First: a day at sea with experienced and personable fishing guide: Matthew von Sturmer, fly-fishing for kingfish, kahawai, snapper around Waiheke. Then – at a time that suits you – travel to Tongariro Lodge near Turangi for two nights and fish to your heart’s content in the Tongariro river.

So many people to thank: Doug Rankin, Matthew von Sturmer, Tongariro Lodge and Gordon Hill – the fanatic who has put it all together.

LIVE IT LIVE – ON STAGE

103AUCKLAND THEATRE COMPANY

An incredibly generous gift from one dynamic arts organisation (ATC) to another (APO). Between us we work enthusiastically to make Auckland a vibrantly diverse cultural scene. Auckland Theatre Company has happily and generously offered eight ATC vouchers for the 2017 season. Five fantastic events still to come (you’ll have to be quick to catch the Peer Gynt production – it’s already underway). This year the ATC programme has an exciting selection – all staged at the spectacular new ASB Waterfront Theatre. Live it live. Polished and professional. Theatre at its very best.

Thanks to our buddies at ATC – we value the mutual admiration that makes us rock.

104SHOWTIME SPECTACULAR – Westside Story

Sold out in Paris, Beijing, Tokyo, London, this slick new high-energy international production comes to Auckland in June for 14 performances only at the Civic Theatre. It’s the show that changed the face of Broadway and it’s better than ever. Guaranteed to be a sell-out in Auckland, you have to top the bidding sheet to claim the two premier seats Auckland Live is holding for you on one of the following dates: 28 June at 7:30pm; or 1 July at 2:30pm; or 2 July at 6:00pm. You will have to decide quickly because these are spectacularly good seats and the alternatives will have to be released. We promise a brilliant and spectacular event. The seats can’t be exchanged; this is a sell-out production with international cast, on tour for a limited season.

Our grateful thanks to Auckland Live for teaming up with APO.

Maestro Giordano Bellincampi – the APO’s fun-loving, inspiring Music Director – loves to cook (and chat). He’s offered to cook for four guests at the home of our CEO Barbara Glaser (at a time that fits with their demanding schedules). We have no idea what he will cook (it may not be Scampi – it just happened to rhyme rather well). But we can promise a marvellously light-hearted evening. Imagine dining with these sparky personalities, taking time out to relax. Imagine being able to ask all those crazy questions you’ve always wanted to ask about music, musicians and orchestras. They don’t mind how crazy your questions. They are both very fine international musicians. They are both very easy company. Get a party of four together and make this happen. Just keep bidding until you get it. You may never have another opportunity like this.

Giordano didn’t need much persuasion. He offered!
