THCF Annual Report 2011

Transcript of Truman Heartland Community Foundation Annual Report 2011

  • 2011 YEAR IN REVIEWJim Pryde, Bryan CaveWhen I think of Blueprints, I think of the plans made that lead to the construction of something good. I had the privilege of serving as Chairman of the Board for the Community Foundation last year. As I reflect on our work in 2011, it is evident that THCF is providing a great Blueprint for Philanthropy for donors throughout our region.

So what does it take to build philanthropy in Eastern Jackson County? Although the Community Foundation has been around for three decades, we continue to help facilitate the ever-increasing philanthropy in our communities. I would like to highlight a few of our accomplishments.

To best serve our family of 600 donor funds and continue growing philanthropy in Eastern Jackson County, the community must be able to have confidence in its Community Foundation. On August 5, 2011, we moved into a new facility on the third floor of the Blue Ridge Bank and Trust Building. A consolidated, professional office is important to the confidence our stakeholders place in the Community Foundation. Our new location has been a great, centrally-located facility positioning us to better serve our donors and our region. Then, on November 9, 2011, we became certified by the National Standards Board for meeting the National Standards of the US Community Foundations. This certification recognizes that your Community Foundation has met 41 of the most rigorous standards in philanthropy in the country. It also affirms our commitment to operational quality, donor service, honoring donor intent, and accountability a mark of confidence, and an important blueprint our donor family can be proud of.

Also, in November, the Community Foundation welcomed 85 Founding Members to the Heartland Legacy Society at our annual Community Grants Luncheon. This special society was created in 2011, another important blueprint, to honor and recognize those donors who designated the Community Foundation (or a Fund at the Community Foundation) as a beneficiary in their estate planning documents. Donors who make this type of commitment are ensuring their charitable interests will be supported for years to come. The Community Foundation is honored to steward these charitable plans.

Lastly, but far from least, the Community Foundation made and began implementing several other important plans last year. Consistent with the efforts in our metropolitan area, THCF established a local Community for All Ages Coalition in an effort to address the issues facing our community as the population continues maturing. Our Community for All Ages Coalition is bringing together over 50 people from all areas of Eastern Jackson County to create a plan of action for our community. In addition, we expanded our reach and opportunities to better serve our donors by having four Advisory Boards active and functioning in Blue Springs, Independence/Sugar Creek, Lees Summit, and Raytown. Our Youth Advisory Council has also been incredibly active and growing, with 105 members from 12 area high schools. They awarded $1,500 in grants at our Grants Luncheon from their own funds a new record.

A Blueprint sets forth the plans for building something special. At the Community Foundation, I believe our many accomplishments in 2011 truly provide a Blueprint for Philanthropy in Eastern Jackson County far into the future.

NATIONAL STANDARDS FOR U.S. COMMUNITY FOUNDATIONSHigher Standards

On November 9, 2011, Truman Heartland Community Foundation was pleased to learn that we met National Standards for operational quality, donor service and accountability in the community foundation sector.

The National Standards Seal by our name indicates official confirmation from the Community Foundations National Standards Board that we have met the most rigorous standards in philanthropy. It affirms our commitment to financial security, transparency, and accountability. It says our grantmaking includes an open, competitive process designed to address the changing needs of our community. The National Standards Seal also confirms our history of honoring donors wishesto support the arts, cultivate gardens, save endangered species, cure illness, expand literacy, feed childrenand support countless other important causes.

The National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations were created in 2000 in cooperation with the Council on Foundations. National Standards guide community foundations in establishing legal, ethical, and effective operational practices that serve as blueprints for internal development and benchmarks for external assessment. The 41 National Standards require Truman Heartland Community Foundation to document its policies in donor services, investment management, grantmaking, and administration. • Since our beginning in 1982, the Community Foundation has been helping donors achieve their charitable dreams through gifts from their estate plans. THE HEARTLAND LEGACY SOCIETY exists to honor donors (both those who are with us and those who have preceded us) who made provisions in their estate plans to include their Family Fund or another Charitable Fund at the Community Foundation. A special thank you to the 85 founding members for their thoughtful planning and vision for a better Eastern Jackson County!

COMMUNITY FOR ALL AGES COALITIONConvening Leaders to Address Aging PopulationToday, 1 in 8 Americans is 65 or older. By 2020, 1 in 6 Americans will be 65 or older, and by 2030 the numbers are expected to grow to 1 in 5. According to AARP, every day 8,000 boomers are turning 65. Assuming that the rate of aging is the same in Kansas City as it is nationally, approximately 50 people a day or 1,500 per month are reaching age 65 in our metropolitan community. By mid-century, for the first time in human history, the number of people over 60 will outnumber children under the age of 14.

This demographic wave of maturing boomers will have a dramatic impact on our Eastern Jackson County areas. Truman Heartland Community Foundations goal is to educate our communities of the impact of this phenomenon and address the issues together.

In 2011, the Community Foundation began by convening leadership from cross-sectors in our Eastern Jackson County community including government, private and non-profit organizations to form a Coalition, which now has 53 members. In the coming years, the Coalitions purpose is to develop a clear understanding of this demographic wave and to begin planning to ensure, together, we ride this wave and use it as a vehicle to strengthen our community and ensure we are Creating an Eastern Jackson County Community for All Ages.

2011 CHARITABLE FUNDSTruman Heartland Community Foundations mission is to improve area communities by promoting private giving for public good. We do this by growing charitable giving in Eastern Jackson County, connecting donors to causes important to them, and leading our region in addressing important community needs. The funds listed on the pages that follow were created to help many in our community accomplish their charitable goals.

Since 1982, our family of donors (an estimated 1,000 individuals) has granted more than $35.5 million to our Eastern Jackson County community and beyond. Donors have also given more than $66 million in charitable donations to the Community Foundation. Today you too can begin using the Community Foundation as an effective blueprint for your personal philanthropy.
