Harry Truman first took notice of Bess Wallace in Sunday school in 1890. He was six, she was five. “I thought she was the most beautiful and the sweetest person on earth.” It wasn’t until 1910 that the two began a nine-year courtship. On her wedding day, Bess Wallace wore a gown of ivory chiffon and this pair of off-white leather shoes. e Trinity Episcopal Church, 409 N. Liberty Street. Truman’s single-breasted, cream and black houndstooth wedding suit was tailored by an old army buddy, Ted Marks. “She’s the one for me...” “She had golden curls and has, to this day , the most beautiful blue eyes.” Harry Truman On June 28, 1919, Harry Truman and Bess Wallace were married at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Independence. “You’ve just never seen such a radiant, happy look on a man’s face,” remarked Harry’s cousin, Ethel Noland.
