Page 2: Truman Heartland Community Foundation Annual Report 2010

The mission of the Truman Heartland Community Foundation is to improve area communities by promoting and serving private giving for the public good.

Donors make the difference at THCF. The difference their dollars make, coupled with the foundation’s understanding of needs in the community, have combined to make that all-important difference we all seek to make.

The approach THCF takes in working in the community can be as varied as the needs to be served. The Community Foundation champions each cause, passion and charitable goal of our donor partners and ensures their dreams are realized through their charitable funds. Whether providing scholarships, establishing family funds, supporting faith communities, creating international programs, forming new charities, or raising support for existing charities, the Community’s Foundation has, or will, touch every life throughout our region.

As one of the region’s most respected community foundations, THCF helps donors turn charitable dollars into major investments, creating a lasting legacy for generations to come. ♥

While the Community Foundation has seen many successful years in its 28-year history, 2010 was a year filled with change, growth and vision casting as we looked at our future impact on Eastern Jackson County. It was my privilege to serve as Chairman of the Board during this exciting year of transition and growth.

At the beginning of the year, the Community Foundation welcomed new President and CEO Phil Hanson and Office Manager Cheryl Klotz. Phil quickly took the reins of his new position and became immersed in meeting board members, staff, donors and the many non-profit organizations that partner with Truman Heartland Community Foundation.

Thereafter, Phil led the Board of Directors in the creation of a New Five-Year Strategic Plan that focused on improving services to donors and positioning the Community Foundation to receive future gifts for the benefit of Eastern Jackson County. I am pleased to report that at the end of year one, the Community Foundation had accomplished all goals established for 2010.

To highlight some of our 2010 accomplishments, we celebrated a number of firsts for the Community Foundation. The Heartland Legacy Society was established to recognize the many donors who have named the Community Foundation in their wills or estate plans. The Friends of the Community Foundation Program celebrated a successful first year.

And the first inaugural presentation of the Dr. Paul M. Thomson Professional Advisor Award was presented to Bunk Farrington in September and was a highlight of the Toast to Our Towns Gala. The 2010 Gala was hosted in Eastern Jackson County at the new Independence Events Center. The enthusiasm in the community for the selection of this venue was displayed by the attendance. This marked the first black-tie event at the Events Center.

The previous two years have been financially challenging for many in our communities and around the world. The upturn in the financial markets was a welcome development in 2010. The Community Foundation saw a 13% increase in donations compared to 2009, and investments returned 13% overall. In addition, assets grew to $28 million as new donors and friends joined our charitable giving family.

All in all, 2010 was an exciting year for the Community Foundation. As the representative of the Board of the Foundation, I wish to thank the donors for their steadfast commitment to philanthropy in Eastern Jackson County. I also thank the excellent Community Foundation staff and the entire Board of Directors who give their time and talent to promote charitable giving in our communities. The strength and betterment of our region is reflected by the efforts of all the participants of the Truman Heartland Community Foundation.

Since 1998 your Community Foundation has engaged Eastern Jackson County student leaders in philanthropy through service on our Youth Advisory Council. Whether reviewing grants, raising funds, serving or giving of their time, talent and treasure, THCF is proud to be among the first to train and inform high school students on the importance of becoming active, young givers in Eastern Jackson County.

To date, 105 students are involved in service and represent 13 area high schools including Blue Springs, Blue Springs South, Fort Osage, Grain Valley, Lee’s Summit, Lee’s Summit North, Lee’s Summit West, Raytown, Raytown South, St. Mary’s, Truman, Van Horn, and William Chrisman.

When community leaders, corporations, donors and other key stakeholders come together, change is imminent. And through the years, the Community Foundation has been a regular convener and catalyst for change in Eastern Jackson County.

Opening its doors in April, 2000, the Jackson County Free Health Clinic began as a program of the Truman Heartland Community Foundation in response to needs assessments performed for the region. It was clear then that a significant gap existed for those who had expensive chronic illnesses but did not have access to traditional indigent care programs. During the planning stages, an effort was made to identify

only those services that were not available from other agencies. Services were targeted to low-income, uninsured adults living in Eastern Jackson County.

Today, the clinic is located in Independence and serves more than 350 patients. Initially staffed by 3 physicians and 20 volunteers, today’s clinic has grown to a volunteer staff of nearly 100 with a Clinic Coordinator and directed by the talented Dr. Bridget McCandless. The mission remains: to forge partnerships with patients, medical staff and the local community to provide quality health care and medications to uninsured adults allowing patients to live healthy, productive lives without the complications of chronic illness.

2010 marked a new chapter in the history of the Free Health Clinic with the establishment of its own 501C3 corporation, and a new name – Shared Care Free Clinic of Jackson County. The second annual Scopes for Hope fundraising event raised $98,671 and will ensure that medically uninsured adults continue to receive the quality care they need and deserve. The future is bright for our Free Clinic!

You can involve your family, support all your favorite charities, and learn about new ways to support your community. In 2010 at our annual Community Grants Luncheon, the Truman Heartland Community Foundation was pleased to announce the creation of the Heartland Legacy Society to honor those who have made provisions to include their Charitable Fund or another Charitable Fund at the Community Foundation in their estate plans.

The Heartland Legacy Society will recognize donors now for their gifts that will benefit Eastern Jackson County sometime in the future. 2011 will mark our inaugural year, with founding members being presented a special gift at the November Grants Luncheon.

Becoming a Founding Member of the Legacy Society is simple. If you have made plans to include your fund at the Community Foundation (or another THCF Fund) through a will, trust, life insurance policy, charitable gift annuity, or other planned gift, and notify the Community Foundation staff of your plans, you will be invited to join the Heartland Legacy Society.

We are grateful to those individuals who, through thoughtful planning, have made provisions to benefit charities in Eastern Jackson County and surrounding communities. On behalf of future generations, we thank those who have let us know of gifts planned to benefit their fund at the Community Foundation and those who are considering leaving a lasting legacy of philanthropy.
