Truck, SUV & Off-Road New ProductsThe light-truck industry was particularly hard hit by the recession that began about three years ago, but at last, the tide seems to be turning. The automakers are seeing definite and consistent sales increases, and while some sectors of the truck market remain tentative, fullsize pickups and crossover vehicles are clearly on the upswing. Of the 10 top-selling vehi-cles in January of 2011, according to Automotive News, the Ford F-Series pickup was number one (again), the Chevrolet Silverado was number two and the Honda CR-V was number six.

As evident by the registra-tion data taken from this year’s Showcase, five product categories dominated exhibi-tors’s submissions—winches, suspension accessories, trailer hitches, driving lights and bumpers. Much of the new product activity in the off-road segment centered around Jeep Wrangler applications, which commanded significant investment among manufacturers in the segment. The Jeep Wrangler was also the most frequently-seen display vehicle on the floor in the off-road segment, while the F-150 was the most- displayed truck.

Four out of five buyers (74%), visited the New Products Showcase, where truck, SUV and off-road manufacturers made a strong impact on attendees. Their entries were scanned 11,051 times by attending media and buyers using handheld remote scanners.

Typically, once buyers identify the prod-ucts they find most intriguing, they hit the SEMA Show floor and meet with exhibi-tors face-to-face. This year, active buyers in the truck, SUV and off-road market took advantage of the opportunity, introducing themselves and scanning their badges at booths in this section a total of 31,252 times.

The following are New Products Show-case entries dedicated to truck, SUV and off-road applications. Along with the products, we’ve interviewed industry executives to get their thoughts about the trends they perceive and some words of advice about what might lie ahead. You’ll see their comments and predictions as you page through the story.

n Forty Wranglers were on display in exhibitor booths, combined with another 54 on display throughout the Las Vegas Convention Center during the 2010 SEMA Show. Clearly dominating the floor, Jeep Wrangler was pre-sented with the 2010 SEMA Award for Hottest 4x4-SUV. This example was built by Warrior Products and features accessories from a host of manufacturers, including Airaid, HoodLift, ProComp USA and ScanGaugeII.

At the 2010 SEMA Show, exhibitors in the Truck, SUV & Off-Road section cre-ated a similar feeling of optimism about the year ahead. With booth registration up 9% from the previous Show, the upper level of the South Hall was a shrine to this market featuring more than 250 exhibitors. New product registrations also soared, with truck, SUV and off-road exhibitors placing 284 products in the New Products Showcase.

While their entries tend to run the gamut of applications, manufacturers in this market dedicated the bulk of their research and design money to five prod-

Ford is profitable, GM doesn’t need bailout money anymore and the OEs are getting leaner in their manu-facturing. That will eventually trickle down

to manufacturers, retailers and consum-ers. Confidence will grow, sales will trend upward and anyone who survives this economy will emerge leaner, stronger and positioned to be more profitable. How-ever, retailers in our industry have yet to fully embrace online marketing. A great website is vital. With a properly built site, retailers have the chance to come up on the first page of Google’s results when a consumer searches a term such as “Truck Caps Los Angeles.” Google knows where customers are located and can refer them to a retailer who has a highly optimized website. But you get what you pay for. Many businesses spend around $1,500 on a website, but a $5,000 site has a chance to be your top-performing salesperson. The same goes for things such as e-mail mar-keting and Facebook for business. Look at how many of the right customers you can put your company and products in front of, and the cost per customer. People are out there buying the products you sell. You just have to make sure they’re buying them from you.

A lot of the trends in the off-road mar-ket go hand-in-hand with those from the street, and many con-sumers are now trying to achieve a theme.

They want the entire project to be well-proportioned and to flow, with either color-matching, such as black on black or a couple of solid colors. The overall trend is shifting back to simpler but still aggressive styling, and people are spending their money on functionality and products that give them a certain look but also good qual-ity. Everybody is concerned now about getting a good solid product, and the clients for our warehouse distributor-ship want the best components they can get for their money. Consumers definitely want parts and products that bring good bang for the buck but also do exactly what they’re supposed to do. The higher-end components are actually starting to fare better with the general public, regardless of price. I think that the economy is definitely getting stronger. We’ve seen an increase in younger people coming in with newer vehicles, and the older crowd is still buy-ing new vehicles or good used vehicles and putting the best components on them. Overall, the economy is starting to turn around.

Gas prices are going to be a major hurdle for the light-truck industry in the com-ing years, which is why SUVs are mor-phing into more car-

like CUVs. Vehicle sales in general have been down due to the economy, and that has significantly affected the mar-ket. However, sales are now trending back up, indicating that the economy is recovering. We’ve seen drastic changes to truck chassis this year, with GM and Ford creating more aggressive trucks with larger axles, stronger frames and better towing and hauling capacities, but there are still a lot of opportuni-ties for companies such as Hellwig to upgrade suspensions. Another current trend is “ready-made” off-road race vehicles for the Baja environment. For instance, Ivan Stewart has a ready-made race vehicle, and Local Motors introduced its Rally Fighter this year at the SEMA Show. With off-road vehicles being sold as complete pack-ages, it would seem that packaging off-road upgrades would be a good strategy as well.

The most prevalent trend that we’ve seen over the last few years is the availability of suspension upgrades for the truck market and the exploitation of

these on the consumer end. Autocross events across the country are seeing an increasing number of truck entrants, and the feature trucks that we run monthly are upgraded with items such as tubular control arms and big disc brakes at a rate of nearly 100%. We have also seen a huge increase in popularity among the ’67–’72 Chevy C10 market. With the growing prices fetched by musclecars and hot rods, the truck market is one of the last bastions of affordable classic auto-mobiles. The market is much broader than retailers may suspect. We attend the obvious truck-related events, such as the F100 Supernationals, but we also cover more-traditional hot-rod events, such as the NSRA Nats and Goodguys Columbus. These are huge gatherings in the hot-rod community and have a great truck presence, but we see few truck retailers catering to these large events. Retailers should also join the SEMA Action Network to ensure that the gov-ernment does not run you out of business with tax increases and regulations.

People have had to find new and interest-ing products that are more enthusiast-based to spark the interest of the off-road market. Higher-end products

where there is more profit seem to be doing better. There is a general shift away from the day-to-day truck products and back to where our base came from, which is the truck enthusiast. People are willing to buy a leveling kit that gives them a high-end look without the high-end cost. The economy is responsible for a portion of that. People have less money to spend on commodity products, but the people who are serious about their trucks are spending money, and there are enough good-quality WDs supplying retailers quickly that they can keep the consumer happy. What the retailers don’t want to do is be so concerned about price that they forget about profit. Profit is what’s going to keep you in busi-ness. The retailer’s biggest problem is getting the consumer in the door. I would challenge the product manufac-turers to keep retailers in mind when they advertise in order to make it easier for them to draw customers. The con-sumer should be driven to the retailer by the manufacturer.

Technology and edu-cation are the keys. The next generation is going to always want to be connected to the Internet, their phones and their music, so features, such as Ford’s

SYNC, are important for the truck mar-ket. We have to emphasize education to keep up with the changes and the com-plexity of new vehicles. In the off-road market, that means gaining horsepower and adding aftermarket exhaust while maintaining ever-more-restrictive emis-sions codes. In pickups, it’s fuel economy and trucks that keep getting lighter. SUVs are featuring more rear-seat enter-tainment and smaller sizes yet with three rows of seats. For retailers, balance is crucial. You need product on the shelves to beat the Internet sellers by having it for the customer right now, but you can’t overbuy and get stuck with inven-tory because the vehicle changed or a product’s popularity faded. Perhaps the biggest opportunity is installing items that the DIYers do not want to do or can’t do, and the biggest threat is gas prices going north of $4 per gallon and how that might affect new-vehicle sales and the activities of weekend-warrior auto enthusiasts.

We are seeing a resur-gence in the older-truck market—both restoration of older trucks, such as ’88–’98 Chevy CKs, as well as rat-rod trucks. On the

SUV side, the market includes basic exterior add-ons, such as grilles and hitch covers, plus interior add-ons that include TV monitors, navigation and creature comforts. We’re not seeing the large lifts in suspension as much any-more, and lowered trucks are coming back. From a styling perspective, there is a lot of blackout—black wheels, black steps, black grilles and so on. People are also hanging on to their trucks much longer and wanting to make them look unique. For now, business is definitely back on the upswing. We are seeing sales increases across the entire product line, and I think consumers still want great quality and service even though they may not do a full truck build all in one ticket. However, the potential for gas to go over $5 per gallon could slow us down. It’s important to understand the consumer’s budget and keep him or her coming back for more.

The most exciting trend I see is that pickup sales are on the rise again. Sales were up in 2010 and were off to a stronger start in January of 2011.

Pickups are no longer the “bad guys” that the media tried to tag them as over the past few years. The Big Three have done a fantastic job of designing, building and marketing the current generation of pickups. That said, the compact and even midsize pickup market and offerings have been reduced dramati-cally, and the elimination of the Ford Ranger from the marketplace is still hard to believe. But, perhaps the biggest trend in both the street market and in off-road-ing is that pickup electronics are being tied into and monitoring every aspect of the vehicle, so retailers should embrace education more than ever before.

There seems to be more popularity with smaller SUVs because of the gas crunch. The percentage of sales in bigger SUVs and trucks, while they’re

still being accessorized, has been reduced. And though the whole market is getting healthier right now, retailers must face the advent of the Internet. Custom-ers are willing to pay slightly more at a local jobber, where they can see, touch and feel a product and get it installed, but the opportunities lie in the service side. Stores have the opportunity to put out new products and build inter-est, and that gives them an advantage. Consumers might find the best price and a lot of information about prod-ucts online, but a catalog or a walk through a store lets them see things they would never have known about if they depended on the Internet alone. That’s why retailers must be dedicated to their craft, must make sure that they’ve found the right products and the right prices and are offering the right kind of services to make money in this environ-ment. That’s why training and education are so important. Employees have to know what they’re talking about and be enthusiasts themselves.

The overall trend in the classic truck mar-ket is the restoration and/or “rodstoration” of early-model pick-ups, combining the classic early designs

with more modern and technologically advanced driveline and safety compo-nents to mechanically update early trucks while maintaining their exterior appear-ance. Another relatively new trend is the assembly of a class of trucks often referred to as “corner killers,” which are early pickups that have been updated with performance engines and drivelines as well as suspension systems that have been upgraded to near-road-racing handling characteristics. We’re also now seeing more Dodge, Studebaker and International badges represented in the custom street-truck hobby, which may be due to the fact that affordable and desirable Fords and Chevrolets are becoming rarer and more expensive. The availability of high-quality, affordable parts, components and accessories has made it much easier for home-shop truck enthusiasts to realize their desires. Many now tackle projects with a bit more con-fidence than would have been possible when their only recourse was junkyard shopping and hands-on fabrication of parts and components. The continua-tion of R&D and an ever-growing selec-tion of aftermarket goods will be the most important driving forces behind the tremendous growth in the classic truck segment.

I see a trend toward daily-use trucks that are fun and functional in both the street and off-road markets. When gas prices hit all-time highs, the off-road seg-

Retailers should diver-sify with “usable” products, such as tires, wipers and brakes, as well as generators and snow/ice equipment. Exhaust and LED

lighting are important to the street-truck market, along with lower-cost shackle kits rather than full-blown lowering kits. In the off-road market, 6-in. lift kits are on the rebound, and weekend warriors want economical winches. Bumpers for Jeeps are also doing well in every price range, as are fold-up and retractable tonneaus for pickups. Nerf bars are get-ting physically bigger, moving from the 3-in. round type to 5- and 6-in. versions that resemble what the automakers are bringing to the table. In the SUV/CUV market, suppliers are expanding to cover many more vehicle applications in floor mats, liners and cargo control, but we need to educate the owners that these great products are available! Less than 5% of them know what we sell or why they need it. Light-truck parts dealers should also get their local new-vehicle dealerships to put demo trucks in their showrooms. They sell quickly and tie extra parts into the financing. Proactive dealerships that have embraced this strat-egy are adding hundreds of thousands of gross dollars to their monthly sales.

Off-road retailers must stay ahead of the curve regarding the development of plat-forms equipped with NHTSA-mandated electronic stability con-

trol (ESC) and various other active vehicle safety systems. The introduction of these increasingly complex and integrated plat-form technologies is a major hurdle for all suspension companies when develop-ing new product. Whether it’s a leveling kit or a complete suspension system, a higher level of product development is required. This is not easy, nor is it cheap. Nevertheless, proper testing and docu-mentation is an absolute requirement. Superlift and other suspension compa-nies have been working with SEMA and a consortium of vehicle OEMs and automotive industry support compa-nies to address ESC compliance and related issues regarding lifted vehicles. The aftermarket will see more on this as progress continues, and any distributor or jobber can contact Superlift directly for more detailed information. Retailers must think about protecting them-selves by knowing what they’re sell-ing and installing. Support the brands you know and trust—brands that put the proper time and testing into the product development process. Ask the manufacturers what kind of testing they have done. Bottom line, sooner rather than later, you can’t be using your grand-daddy’s lift kit anymore.
