MArK 8:27-33 (rsv) 7And Jesus went on with his disciples, to the

villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do men say that I am?” 8 And they told him, “John the Baptist; and oth-ers say, Eli’jah; and others one of the prophets.” 9 And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.” 30 And he charged them to tell no one about him. 31 And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 3

And he said this plainly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter, and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not on the side of God, but of men.”

2 TIMOTHY 1:3-8, 13-14 (NLT) 3Timothy, I thank God for you—the God I serve

with a clear conscience, just as my ancestors did. Night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. 4I long to see you again, for I remember your tears as we parted. And I will be filled with joy when we are together again. 5I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you. 6 This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you. 7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear and

timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. 8

So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord. And don’t be ashamed of me, either, even though I’m in prison for him. With the strength God gives you, be ready to suffer with me for the sake of the Good News.

13 Hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me—a pattern shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus. 14 Through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you.

JOsHuA 6:1-16 (NIv) 1Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in. Then the LORD said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. 3 March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. 4Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. 5 When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have all the people give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the people will go up, every man straight in.” 6 So Joshua son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant of the LORD and have seven priests carry trumpets in front of it.” 7 And he ordered the people, “Advance! March around the city, with the armed guard going ahead of the

In the Darfur region of Sudan, government-backed militias continue to bomb and burn villages, destroy water and food stores, and

target civilian and ethnic populations in acts of genocide, including mass killings, rape, torture and ethnic cleansing. Over 400,000 civilians have lost their lives and over .5 million civilians have been displaced in the genocide.

The situation for humanitarian aid workers continues to worsen as well, as restricted areas expand and attacks become more frequent. It is also increasingly difficult for food and medical supplies to reach the 3.5 million civilians who are completely dependent upon international aid for survival. The victims of this violence have suffered under very limited protection through ill-equipped African Union forces since 003.

It has been almost two months since the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 1706 authorizing the deployment of 0,000 U.N. peacekeeping troops to take over for the African Union troops. However, the resolution “invites the consent” of the Sudanese government before troops are deployed – and the government has not consented.

It is time for President Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to increase U.S. pressure on Sudan through the United Nations Security Council; the Sudanese government must allow U.N. peacekeepers and humanitarian aid workers in Darfur. If the government does not take actions to protect its people, tough consequences should include: financial and travel sanctions on

ark of the LORD.” 8 When Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the LORD went forward, blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the LORD’s covenant followed them. 9 The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard followed the ark. All this time the trumpets were sounding. 10 But Joshua had commanded the people, “Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!” 11 So he had the ark of the LORD carried around the city, circling it once. Then the people returned to camp and spent the night there. 1

Joshua got up early the next morning and the priests took up the ark of the LORD. 13 The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marching before the ark of the LORD and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the LORD, while the trumpets kept sounding. 14 So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days. 15 On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times. 16The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the people, “Shout! For the LORD has given you the city!

JUST COME

The other day I was looking for a certain hymn. Turning to the hymnal’s index, I noticed that many hymns begin with the word, “Come.” “Come We That Love the Lord,” “Come Thou Long-Expected Jesus,” “Come Ye Thankful People, Come,” and dozens more.

That makes sense when you think about it. Throughout the Bible, God invites us to come to Him. During Sunday worship and private prayer, we in turn ask God to come to us.

“Coming” means leaving where we were. For Stewardship, it means getting out of bed Sunday mornings to go to church. It means leaving the dinner table to get to choir practice. It means walking away from the recliner to rake leaves for shut-ins. It means moving three pews up to welcome a visitor. It means driving bags of groceries to a food pantry. For some, it could mean driving hundreds of miles from home to help rebuild after a natural disaster.

“A body at rest tends to remain at rest, unless some force acts to move it.” That is Sir Isaac Newton’s first law of motion. For Christians, that force is God’s command to us to love our neighbor. Come!
