The suggested donation for an afternoon celebrating friendship, music and dessert is $15. The oml-ca.aauw.net website has more information. Download a reservation form and mark your calendar and join us for our second annual Valentine’s Party. What questions did the “War Jobs For Women” Program of WWII raise about ‘the place(s) of women’ in society? Come prepared to share your family’s own war stories. We’ll read wartime propaganda messages and discuss how our elders might have chosen to respond. DISTINGUISHED WOMANHappy New Year Everyone!

It was great to see so many of our members socializing together at the Holiday Tea & Coffee at Diane Bell-Rettger’s festively decorated home and again at Indigo and Poppy in downtown Lafayette. So nice to get to see some members that have only been able to attend our general meetings on a “hit or miss basis”. Thank you to those who donated books for Burckhalter School’s Library. Hoping that your celebrations with family and friends were as joyful as possible!

How much do you know about Rosie The Riveter? Pat Beckner has a treat for all of us at the coming General Meeting on Tuesday, January 20th! I won’t spoil the surprise. Come and see for yourself and bring a friend. You’ll be glad you did!

So far, our branch has three members on the Nominating Committee: Sandy Fox-Sohner, Laura Wittenberg and Mary-Leigh Miller. We need two more people for this committee. Please consider joining, there are only a few jobs that need filling. It shouldn’t take too much of anyone’s time. Call me if you are available to help. Thanks! Best Regards, Karen Mankowski

Distinguished Woman 2015:YOUR NOMINATIONS WILL DETERMINE HER NAME!

We need your help in finding this won-derful woman amongst our dedicated members. So far we have only received a few letters. We hope to hear from you!

So many members have contributed heartily to the success of our branch. We want to celebrate our hard workers, thank them for their commitment to our mission, and recognize their dedication.

Please send a brief – or lengthy – mes-sage with your nomination(s) to:

[email protected] by regular mail to: Sandy Fox-Sohner 27 Williams Drive, Moraga, CA 94556

January is the month to submit names of those members whom you recommend for Distinguished Woman 2015. We are ready to take on a flurry of praise-filled nominations. Thank you! The Distinguished Woman Committee

FOCUS ON ... GREAT DECISIONS 2015Great Decisions is America’s largest discussion program on world affairs. The name is shared by a national civic-education program, briefing book, teacher’s guide and PBS television series produced by the Foreign Policy Association. The Great Decisions program highlights eight critical foreign policy challenges facing Americans each year. In Great Decisions Discussion Groups across the country, participants discuss and debate each issue and complete a national opinion ballot to communicate their views to Congress and the White House. Supported by the Foreign Policy Association for over 50 years, Great Decisions involves citizens in the foreign policy making process.

TOPICS FOR THIS YEAR Russian and the Near Abroad,

Privacy in the Digital Age, Sectarianism in the Middle East,

India Changes Course, U.S. Policy Toward Africa,

Syria’s Refugee Crisis, Human Trafficking in the 21st Century

Brazil in Metamorphosis.

Books have arrived and the discussion group starts February 5, 2014. We meet in the conference room at the Hacienda on consecutive Wednesdays from 2 to 3:45 pm. There is room for one more member if someone is interested and willing to purchase a book from the Foreign Policy Association. Judy Helder, Great Decisions Coordinator

NOTE from BOBBIE DODSONIf you wondered why your check to Bobbie Dodson was not cashed, the envelope with them became mis-placed in my house. If you could re-write a check, that would be great. All the proceeds will go to Build Congo Schools. Please contact me at: [email protected]

Veteran facilitators Regan Murray and Morgan Matranga work with S2S trainer Jessi Burgess to plan the first session for middle school girls to be held on January 11 at the Orinda Community Church.

LEADERSHIP GIRLS PLAN S2S SUNDAY SESSIONS: Melissa Van Pell and Ciana Torres take charge of plan-ning the second Sunday session, February 8. All the high school girls are looking forward to being mentors to middle school girls.

LEADERS IN ACTION: Anaisa Lawson and Dani-elle Schumacher share their plan with all the facili-tators. Girl leadership is an important part of S2S, as girls find their ideas make a difference and others listen to them.

GETTING-TO-KNOW-YOU GAMES: The facilitator group tests games to be used with the middle school girls. This game, called “Hello, Hello” helps girls to feel comfort-able very quickly.
